Andromeda Gun by John Boyd

I've placed a cover art link to your verified copy of this title. Also, it looks very much like the work of Paul Lehr (who was doing covers for Berkley/Putnam around this time). Is he credited anywhere in the book? Thanks. MHHutchins 02:52, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Just looked up the listing for this pub in Locus (#180, October 27, 1975) which credits Lehr as the artist. MHHutchins 02:55, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Cover is correct, I'll also dig it out and check for a name.Kraang 03:02, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Century Rain

Can you check this this pub again please? It appears to match mine for ISBN and printing number, but mine is too deep to be pb so I made it tp, and the edition is 2005 (see just above number-line) although it also mentions the 2004 Gollancz hardback. BLongley 19:04, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Your right it's 2005 but I would still make it a pb. It measures 7 X 5 and a tp would be more like 8 X 5.5 and up. The GB tp editions seem to vary greatly in size and so do the pb's. The depth of this pb is a bit above normal.Kraang 23:36, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, help says "tp - Trade paperback. Used for anything significantly larger than a paperback. 7.5" x 5" is a common size" and I'd agree that's more common for current British trade paperbacks. I'm leaving mine as tp as its outsize enough to make me prefer a 'normal' edition, although it's not tall enough to cause me normal shelving worries. It messes up my double-stacked book-cases though. Fortunately it's only Alistair Reynolds that seems to have this particular format. BLongley 09:44, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

McDevitt

BKTG11018 , verified by you, is missing the month of publication. I have a 5th printing which gives it as Dec. '96. Was this missing from the 1st printing? Did not edit the pub. record.--Bluesman 20:47, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Will check, thanks!Kraang 02:12, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

A Talent For War

91In the notes section of TLNTFRWR2004 you say that the "1 in the number line is in error " but I don't think so. I think ACE started a new number line for it's official re-issue of the book. I have a sixth printing of this edition which I bought just a few months ago and with the popularity of his last few novels, six printings in 4+ years seems reasonable, but six in nearly 20 does not. Just a thought.--Bluesman 23:58, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I'll have a second look at this.Kraang 02:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Hell-Bound Train: The or That

Please take a look at ISFDB:Verification requests#"That Hell-Bound Train" when you have a chance. You verified The Hugo Winners, one of the titles that included the story in question. Your input would be helpful. Thank you. -DES Talk 17:43, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Dying Inside

I have added "LCCN 72-1231" to your verified 1973 Ballantine edition of Dying Inside, but mine is a US printing and I suppose there is a chance that the Canadian printing doesn't have the LCCN number. Ahasuerus 01:49, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Time Dissolver

May have found a signature (initials) on THTMDSSLVR1957 but my copy seems to cut off the last little bit (right above the left 'hip' of the woman at the edge of the cover). Then again perhaps my magnifying glass and a couple of Kilkenny's deceive me... --Bluesman 03:58, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

What's It Like Out There? and Other Stories

This. [2] . My copy has Dreamer's Worlds on page 144 and on copyright page for story. ToC has Dreamer's World. Also my copy has a Kent 'spine buster' between page 192-193, it ends with FTC report Mar '74. Thanks, Harry. --Dragoondelight 14:38, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Circus World

User:Dragoondelight has added a new printing to Barry B. Longyear's Circus World. It looks exactly the same as the January 1981 printing that you verified in 2007, but the ISBN is different. I suspect that there is something not quite right with this picture, but I figured you would be in a better position to sort it out since you have the verified pub. All I have is the hardcover edition... Ahasuerus 01:16, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Both ISBN #'s return the same book. I'll add this book to the others I have to check(have 6 now and will dig them out on the weekend). Thanks!Kraang 03:38, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Invasion From Mars

Was about to do a transient on your verified pub ANCL00315. Just two things: should the title have "Interplanetary Stories" added to it as it is on both the cover and title page; the story "Castaway" is credited to Nelson Bond (no 'S.') in the table of contents, the acknowledgements and under the story title in the book. Love these old map backs, recently picked up 15 of them for a song, unfortunately only one was Sf, all the rest mysteries. Cheers! ~Bill, --Bluesman 15:36, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks I'll have a look at mine.Kraang 03:20, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
This one's getting a goodly layer of dust on it, or are you having to navigate moats and castle walls to get to books as mister Longley does? And he has a flying cat, too! ;-) ~Bill, --Bluesman 03:39, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Dancer From Atlantis

The Eternal Savage

A question about your copy of the Ace edition of this title. Do the two stories have individual title pages, and is it clear that this is a collection, maybe having a TOC? Tuck gives it as a novelization of the two stories, "The Eternal Lover" and "Sweetheart Primeval". Thanks. MHHutchins 19:12, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Artifact by Benford

I think you should recheck this verified pub. I just entered my first printing which is different from yours. Price: mine is $3.95 - ISBN: mine has 0-812050060-1 - Number line? mine reads 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. Locus1 has a first and third printing. Could yours be the second? Thanks Willem H. 18:59, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Just checked my copy and everything is correct. Mines a 1st, just with a different price and ISBN#. Some of the Tor books sold in Canada had different cover prices, this is just a more extreme example of one.Kraang 01:04, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Lord Tedric

Can you see if both Eklund and Smith are credited on the title page of this pub? The cover hedges by giving Eklund authorship, but that it was "conceived" by Smith. Thanks. MHHutchins 18:29, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Eklund is the only author on the title page and the spine, the copyright is "Copyright 1979 by Baronet Publishing Company and Verna Smith Trestrail". The blurb at the front of the book creates Smith as the developer of the outline and plot before he died. Do you think he should be dropped as a co-author?Kraang 01:58, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
The whole series is a tangled mess. I believe the British editions only credited Smith, even though Eklund did all of the writing. It's been awhile since I asked the question that I've forgotten what my point was! In any case, I just want to make sure that each record reflects how each of the pubs were credited. Thanks. MHHutchins 02:28, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I added routine notes to your verified Lord Tedric, then I noticed that although Doc Smith is mentioned on the cover as the creator of Lord Tedric, the only person credited as the author (on the title page, spine, and both covers) is Gordon Eklund. Then I found this discussion.
I also think if we probably want to change the authorship of this pub and title to Eklund alone and then set up a VT. As Michael said, the book was published as by Doc Smith alone in the UK, so we already have one VT on file. (Gotta love publishers' tricks! :-) Ahasuerus 01:58, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Green Mars cover question

Hi. While hunting for a cover image of my 19th printing of Green Mars, I noticed there are two Bantam covers, apparently differing in only the presence or absence of "1994" in the Hugo award notice. Does the cover of your verified GREENMRS1995 1st printing look like either of this (no 1994) or this (1994)? If so, I'll put the matching one on it while I'm at it. Thanks. --MartyD 10:50, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Mine has the year(1994) on it. I'll upload a scan of it tonight. Thanks!Kraang 12:30, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

The Light-years Beneath My Feet -- date, etc.

Hi. In working with my copy of the 1st printing of The Light-Years Beneath My Feet, I came across your verified THLGHTRSBB2005 and also the unverified THLGHTRSBN2006. Mine matches the latter, and only has "2006 Del Rey Books Mass Market Edition" and "Copyright © 2005 by Thranx, Inc." for dating. The excerpt from The Candle of Distant Earth is © 2006. Locus1 has the pub date as Jun 2006. Your verified copy has a date of 2005-00-00. Could the date be a mistake? If so, I can change it, add other notes + cover, and delete the other entry. If it's right, I'll just add the info from my copy into the other entry and verify that. Thanks. --MartyD 10:14, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Your correct about the date, adjust the unverified copy, it has a better tag and cover image and I'll delete my entry.Kraang 12:24, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I added some notes and page numbers. --MartyD 00:30, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Out of the Sun

Locus has an interesting comment that [this] re-write has a non-fiction book "The Amazing Lazar" bound with it? Sort of makes sense as it would be an extensive revision to turn an 88 page book into a 233 page one. No mention in the notes. ~Bill, --Bluesman 03:40, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Editor credit for a collection

I noticed that you questioned a new editor about a submission changing the author credit for this Robert Sheckley collection to the editor, Robert Conquest. Perhaps you were experiencing a momentary breakup in the time-flux continuum, but we currently credit the writer of the collection as the author, and the editor is only credited in the pub/title notes. :) Till our time streams cross again... MHHutchins 04:02, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Paths to Otherwhere -- price question

Hi. I was looking at your verified Paths to Otherwhere, and I noticed BKTGA0535, which looks like a less-detailed duplicate. Your version's price is listed at $6.99, while the other's is $5.99. But upon investigation, both Locus1 and the Baen site (all the way at the bottom) list the Feb 1997 printing at $5.99. Any chance the $6.99 is a mistake? --MartyD 01:20, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

I had the wrong price thanks. I've also updated the notes.Kraang 03:00, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Frank Kelley Frease

Weird, but if that's how it is, that's how it is. Do you think a note on the pub would be justified? I'm assuming this is actually F. K. Freas; the style supports that? -DES Talk 02:29, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
With this he has 7 variants to the main name. I'd would suggest making it a variant since it's verified.Kraang 02:34, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

The Reality Dysfunction: Part 1: Emergence

I updated the title of your verified pub The Reality Dysfunction: Part 1: Emergence to the correct subtitle mark. Your title had been "The Reality Dysfunction, Part 1: Emergence" and I changed the "," to a ":". Assumed to be a data entry typo that didn't get caught at verification. Simpson H. Ritter

I suspect that "Simpson H. Ritter" http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?135529 is actually "Simpson M. Ritter". Note, both wrote quizes for Super Science Stories. Could you check if this is a typo or a "pseudonym"? Cheers Jonschaper 06:02, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Protostars

Harry has added a US printing of your verified pub, but has different roman-numeraled pages and gives a different name for the Pg Wyal story. Can you re-check your copy and see if they should match before we go to the trouble of creating a variant? Thanks. Also I wonder if we should add a C before the price of your copy. Otherwise someone might come along and try to delete one or the other record, because they match exactly on the title record page. MHHutchins 23:48, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Harry's printing is identical to my Canadian printing, except for the extra story on page "1057" of a 271 page book. Harry should've just updated my copy and added the note about the two versions of printings. On most all Ballantines there are a CDN and US version only after mid 1978 does it matter when you see a price difference. Having two copies listed in the data base is from my point of view useless. One listing and a mention in notes would be sufficient. As for "Side Effects" I'll have to find the book and see if the extra subtitle is on the contents page or the title page. Thanks!Kraang 00:21, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
I feel the same way about Canadian printings, but there are those who insist that these are different editions (and I've given up the fight to argue any further about it.) I caught the error of the starting page for that story and have already asked Harry to correct it. MHHutchins 01:16, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Zahn's Night Train to Rigel

Anderson's The Van Rijn Method

Are the introductions to the short stories here truly fiction? Thanks. MHHutchins 05:29, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

From the intro to the ebook version:
"A word about the introductions to the stories and novel: all were written by Poul Anderson and accompanied the stories when they appeared in such collections as Trader to the Stars, The Trouble Twisters, and The Earth Book of Stormgate. The Stormgate introductions were written as if by a Ythrian historian. (You'll meet the Ythrians in the second and third stories in this book.) In the case of The Man Who Counts, there was an embarrassment of riches: an introduction "by" Hloch the Ythrian plus a second introduction which Poul Anderson wrote for another publication of the novel. I've placed the latter as an afterword."
In the ebook version at least (which I am about to enter) all the introductions are written in an in-universe style, and attributed to named persons who are fictional. (They mostly aren't really "stories"; if we had a "fictional essay" or "in-universe essay" type, they would fit it.) However, the "afterword" to The Man Who Counts is a classic author's note, describing how the work came to be written, what the inspirations were, etc, signed by Anderson. I would change this to an essay, assuming that the version in the printed book is the same. -DES Talk 15:11, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
Also, why does the entry for "Introduction to The Man Who Counts" not follow the pattern for the other intros, which are all "Introduction: Title". In the ebook version this intro is in exactly the same form as the others, with INTRODUCTION on one line and the story title in initial caps on the next line. I am not creating a variant until I hear from you, however-DES Talk 15:42, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Four Lords of the Diamond

Entering links into the SFBC pages and came across [this] pub with a confusing note that Currey has this as a first SFBC edition. Currey stops at the end of 1977 and Jack L. Chalker isn't even one of the authors he covers (that may have changed with the updated CD-ROM he has, but it still stops at the end of '77). Was the note there before you verified the pub? ~Bill, --Bluesman 22:21, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

I found a copy of Haze, which you verified, at my local library. Everything matches your pub, except for the cover image, which is clearly different, but looks to be by the same artist -- at least it is in a similar style. I scanned the library book, and the image is here. Does this match your copy, or does your copy match the amazon image used in the db currently? BTW, OCLC uses the same image as Amazon does. I wonder if Tor changed images at the last minute. -DES Talk 20:54, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Gary Ruddell's artist signature

Hi. I have cloned a publication that you verified (the clone is still in the approval queue). On my publication, the cover artist's signature is only partially visible on the back cover - I think I can decipher the letters "RUDDE". Since I am not an expert on cover artists, I have no idea who this could be. The only clue I have is the original pub record that you verified: It references Gary Ruddell as the cover artist, and a statement in the notes says that the cover has the artist's signature. Unfortunately, I don't know how to get at an image of Gary Ruddell's signature; I have looked around in Category:Artist_Signature_Images on this wiki, but he's not in there. Do you have another source where I could have a look at the signature? Herzbube 03:09, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

I have the hc & pb, the pb does not credit the artist only his signature is present, but the dust jacket of the hc does credit him. This pattern has turned up in the last few years for some publishers. If my copy has a clear image I'll scan it and upload the image. Thanks!Kraang 00:26, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

"Out of Time" multi-title problem?

Chapterbooks make my brain hurt, so there may be nothing wrong, but: Out of Time, the shortfiction novella, and Out of Time, the chapterbook, both appear in your verified Out of Time chapterbook pub (although its contents shows just the shortfiction novella title. The shortfiction novella title also appears in your verified Rockets, Redheads & Revolution. I don't know if the proper treatment is to have one of the titles a variant of the other or what, but I figure you'll know, and since you're conveniently primary verifier on both pubs involved.... ;-) --MartyD 15:51, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

The chapterbook Out of Time is exactly correct. All chapterbook publications should have both a shortfiction title and a chapterbook title, just as all collections should have both a collection title and (usually several) shortfiction titles. Think of a chapterbook as a 1-item collection. A shortfiction title may appear in both a chapterbook and a collection, just as it might appear in both a collection and an anthology, or in two or more different collections. No variants are needed here, unless the story is actually different in the two publications (which is possible but I think unlikely). See Help:How to convert a novel to a "chapterbook". -DES Talk 16:46, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Makes no sense to me, but I understand what you are saying. That it's ok is all that matters. --MartyD 17:27, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

The Futurological Congress

I added the cover artist (Stanislaw Fernandes) and a note to this verified pub. Thanks, Willem H. 20:50, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Fracas Factor

Saw this on your "Verifications" page and thought you might see it sooner here. ~Bill, --Bluesman 04:25, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Expanded the Note in The Fracas Factor to read "Cover art not credited, but the artist's signature is on the cover. Catalog ID "602 DK". Publication year not stated, but the copyright year is 1978, which is assumed to be the publication year." Also, you note that it is the first Leisure Books printing, but my copy doesn't have a statement of printing. Could you please check yours? If it's a stated first printing and mine is not, then mine is probably a later printing. Thanks! Ahasuerus 20:54, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

I'll change the "First printing" statement to "No statement of printing but assumed to be first". Thanks!Kraang 01:23, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Submitting cover art

Recently you approved a cover submission of mine for nebula Science Fiction for October, 1957. It came from the Visco web site and I do not know how to give them credit or where to verify it. Also there are a few more covers from 57-58 that are missing. Can you help me so I can submit them properly. The cover is below. Thanks Sfbooks52 00:34, 17 November 2009 (UTC) NEBULASOCT1957.jpg

We have explicit permission to link image from Visco, just click on the image look under properties and copy the URL. If you look at this page[7] and scroll down to "Image URL" you'll find the sites we can link to. The credit to Visco is automatic. Hope this helps, if not let me know. :-)Kraang 03:22, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

I edited this submission again by changing the URL to the actual URL from the Visco site. I had been copying the pics to my hard drive and adding them from there. If I did it right, which I hope I did, it will make adding the missing covers MUCH easier. Please let me know.

Thanks, Sfbooks52 04:02, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Just approved and here it is[8].Kraang 04:31, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, again. I got a bit confused when I got the rejection message from Bluesman. However, I now understand his point. Now on to filling in some gaps. Sfbooks52 11:04, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

I began to upload more of the magazine covers from Visco, however the upload button will not work. Am I locked out or is uploading capabilty not working right now. Thanks Sfbooks52 19:49, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm not a computer teck(only know how to use them not how they work) but I don't think you can do a direct upload from their site. Just copy the URL under properties and submit as a publication update.Kraang 01:35, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

That was it! I'm on my way, again. Sfbooks52 01:43, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

If I can be of help in the future let me know or leave a message on the Help Desk and whoever is avaliable or knows more about the subject while get back to you. :-)Kraang 01:49, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Andromeda Gun

Added the cover artist (Paul Lehr) and a note to your verified Andromeda Gun after this. Thanks, Willem H. 07:27, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Beyond the Barrier

In the lower right corner of this pub, there is a vague signature, which I believe to be from Jack Faragasso. Can you confirm this? Thanks, Willem H. 11:08, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

The signature is very faint on my copy , but it does appear to be Faragasso. Thanks!Kraang 00:15, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Damon Knight scans

I added this cover scan to The Rithian Terror and this cover scan to Beyond the Barrier. Thanks, Willem H. 19:21, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

"Beyond the Barrier" is correct but the other one must be for a later edition. The cover price is $0.95 and the cat # AN1253, where mine is $0.75 and the cat # is AS1008. You may want to submit the info on your pub and move the image. Thanks!Kraang 01:36, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
You're right. I missed the clues completely. Thanks for noticing, I cloned your pub, removed my verification and added this scan to your pub. Not as clear as mine, but it has the right numbers. Thanks, Willem H. 11:33, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
