The Arsenal Out of Time

Could you check your copy of The Arsenal Out of Time? I think I have the same edition, but on the backcover of my copy Kelly Freas is credited for the cover art. Thanks, --Willem H. 12:19, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

News from Elsewhere

The artist for [this] is Kelly Freas. Confirmed by email with Freas' agent who has the preliminary sketches but had no idea what book the artwork was used for. He's a happy camper! Cheers! --~ Bill, Bluesman 04:22, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

The Cingulum

Can you check the cover art credit as stated in this publication? I have a suspicion that "Norma" and "Segrelles" are two different credits: one for his art agent and one for him (he's often credited as his last name only.) Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 21:14, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Destiny Dice

Can you look at these entries?: Destiny Dice and The Destiny Dice. They appear to be the same item but with slightly different titles. The correct title is "The Destiny Dice" and I've uploaded a cover scan to that entry. In addition, the cover artist is credited as "Kraft" on one entry and "Craft" in the other. The correct attribution is "Kinuko Craft" according to the copyright page. I think a merge might be in order.SFJuggler 21:26, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

If the Stars Are Gods

Can you take a look at your copy of If the Stars Are Gods? My copy states that the Sterbach art is on page 94 and it actually is. The cover art is credited on the copyright page. The One-Eyed Man

Replaced the amazon image for [this], also added the Afterword and the short story. The latter presents the obvious: this is [technically] an omnibus. Also, I'm sure some enterprising editor will present the [novel ;-))] idea that the subtitle be included in the title record [I like them just fine in the notes, though this one is at least interesting ....]. The Ethos Effect

Please confirm that an ISBN-13 is present in this 2004 publication. The ISBN-13 wasn't implemented into 2005, but I suppose it's possible that a publisher may have jumped the gun. Make sure it's not the 13 digit EAN printed above the barcode which was the forerunner of the ISBN but isn't exactly the same thing. Thanks for looking. Mhhutchins 17:43, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Extremis

Hi. You've verified the hard cover edition of the book Extremis. I have a copy of the paperback edition. The artwork appears to be identical, but your copy credits Kurt Miller, while my copy credits David Seeley. Someone placed a note in the paperback notes, perhaps when the record was created, which indicated that the credit to David Seeley was not correct, but didn't give a source. I was trying to resolve this, and it was suggested that I contact you to begin with, and ask you to check your copy for the artist. I guess it's possible that it was wrong in the paperback edition, but on the other hand, since it's a later edition, it might reflect a correction, or maybe the artist is using a pseudonym. Thanks, Jack Sjmathis 18:26, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

The cover artist is Seeley but the dust cover credits Miller for illustrations. Have a look at the note I added. Thanks!Kraang 00:59, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Joel Shepherd's 23 Years on Fire

Hi,

re the publication you've primary verified here: I have a copy of this book & would like to make the following changes to the publication record:

- change the page count to 435 - this being the highest printed page number on my copy.
- add Stephan Martiniere as the cover artist (from back cover).
- add $18.00 as the price in Canada (in the Notes).
- change the publication date to just 2013-09-00 because Amazon now states 10th September (not 3rd) & the publisher's website here isn't more specific than September.

- replace "Data from Amazon.com as of 2013-07-18." with "Month from Amazon US."

Please advise if these changes are OK by you. --clarkmci / j_clark 22:50, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Alan Dean Foster's The Dig

Long ago, you verified a copy of Alan Dean Foster's The Dig . The image is an Amazon scan. I have a copy of the same publication, except the cover has printed a sticker-like seal stating "SPECIAL OFFER ON The Dig (tm) CD-ROM Game! See Last Page". And on what would be page 312 is a full page offer (after a blank page 311). If your copy matches the existing cover without the offer, I'll create a new entry, otherwise I'll upload my image to this pub. Thanks. Doug 16:45, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Sorry I missed this post. I'll be away till Sept 30, will check boxes when I get back.Kraang 03:47, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
The other verifier (PortForlorn) confirmed his copy had the special offer, so I have updated the image from the Amazon image to my scan. Doug 16:35, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Foundation and Earth / The Story Behind the Foundation

There are two title records for the essay "The Story Behind the Foundation": This one that appears in a pub record that you verified, and this one that appears in a pub record verified by SFJuggler. I believe the two title records refer to the same essay and should be merged. Would this be OK with you? I have invited SFJuggler to join this discussion. Thanks, Patrick -- Herzbube Talk 00:10, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

That should be fine. Thanks!Kraang 00:52, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

L.E. Modesitt, Jr.'s The Eternity Artifact

Can you verify the Canadian price for this pub of L.E. Modesitt, Jr.'s The Eternity Artifact? Armageddon 2419 A.D.

Hi. In your verified pub, does it have a foreword on p.7 by Robert A. W. Lowndes? If so, shouldn't that be entered as a separate content and the page number for the start of the novel be pushed to p.9? Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 21:57, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

My Del Rey/Ballantine hc of Darwin's Radio has the Afterword on p. 419, A Short Biological Primer on p.421 and Short Glossary of Scientific Terms on p.423. Default display of non-English translations

When you get a chance, could you please review this discussion? The proposal basically boils down to changing the behavior of the Summary Bibliography when the viewing user is not logged in. Currently only English translations are displayed for unauthenticated users. The proposal would change it to displaying all translations. The downside is that the Summary page could get longer and harder to navigate.

I am trying to get a sense of how widespread the support for this change is. TIA! Ahasuerus 01:03, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

Author's Note for Chalker's 'Quintara Marathon' trilogy

Letting you know I've merged the three "Author's Notes" that appeared in each separate publication of this Jack L. Chalker trilogy (in which we both have one or more verified publications) as they are all the same essay. I've given them the universal title Author's Note (The Quintara Marathon) and merged. A note has been added to this title regarding one very minor text difference, but they are essentially the same essay. Thanks. Prayers to Broken Stones interior art

There are seven substantial pieces of interior art in your verified Prayers to Broken Stones that illustrate individual stories, and for which we have no records. If it's OK with you as PV1 I'd like to add them (PV2 also notified). PeteYoung 19:41, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

That would be fine with me. Thanks!Kraang 02:22, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Done. I've had to add a note to the effect that the interior art appears on unnumbered pages that are not part of the book's pagination (which by using the bar method makes the contents listing look a little odd). Also, that the artist's signature is visible on the front cover. PeteYoung 19:11, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Vietnam and Other Alien Worlds

The cover credit for our verified Vietnam and Other Alien Worlds is given to "Thomas Kidd", the pseudonym, however does your copy have "Tom Kidd" on both the inside back cover and the copyright page, as mine does? Thanks for looking. PeteYoung 08:13, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

It's Tom Kidd will fix. Thanks!Kraang 22:23, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

Ballantine 1st paperback of Sturgeon's 'More Than Human'

There are 2 records for the 1st printing of Ballantine #46 'More Than Human'. I believe the one you (and Don Erikson) verified, http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?204081, should be deleted, but first wanted to check with you to see if there's a reason to keep both of the records. The one you verified credits publisher "Ballantine Books". The other record, http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?22862, credits "Farrar, Straus and Young with Ballantine Books" as shown on the title page (and front cover.) Is there a reason to keep record #204081 which does not credit Farrar Straus & Young? Thanks. (And, FYI, I'm checking with Don Erikson, also.) Markwood 05:24, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Amazing Stories, December 1947

Hi. Regarding your pv'd Amazing Stories, December 1947 "The Observatory is actually on p.6 instead of 9. On p.84 I was wondering why you have it credited to "unknown" and varianted when it is credited to "Alexander Blade" on the title page? On p.100, the actual title on the title page looks like it should be Space Ships Limited: VI. Life on Other Planets. I see that there are five others, (all with slightly different titling formats) leading off with "Space Ships Limited" - maybe that should have a series. Also, I see that the essay for "The Rain of Fish" never occurred (as you note) but shouldn't the full page artwork (uncredited as far as I can tell) be entered on p.180 (the back cover)? Thanks for any input, Doug / Vornoff 20:03, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Please make any changes you feel are necessary and someone overseeing magazines will deal with it. Thanks!Kraang 00:10, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
Will do. Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 00:22, 4 January 2016 (UTC) Submitted, except I see now that it looks like "unknown" is standard practice for use if author is a made-up name like "Alexander Blade" which has been used by many authors and the actual author is not known. I left it alone. Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 01:20, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

The Engineer Reconditioned

I have a copy of the mass-market paperback version of The Engineer Reconditioned and noticed a minor mistake. The story "Proctors" begins on p. 184, not 182 as currently stated in notes & contents. Is this true of your copy as well?

I would also like to change the notes to add some information, so that they would end up like this:

  • Printing date from Locus1
  • The copyright page has no printing information nor is it contained anywhere else in the book.
  • The title page says “Cosmos Books” for the publisher.
  • Copyright page says “Published by Dorchester Publishing Co., Inc. . . . in collaboration with Wildside Press LLC.” Also “Copyright © 2006 by Neal Asher.” Copyright page and UPC label on back of book give both ISBN-13 and ISBN-10.
  • Each story begins with a brief (1-page or less) introduction by the author, with the exception of “Snairls.”
  • The contents page of this edition does not include "Proctors" page 184 and "The Gurnard" page 292.
  • The short story "Snairls" begins on page 114 with the sentence “The other passengers went to their cabins. . .” It is untitled and not included in the contents page.
  • On back cover: Art by Ian Field-Richards. Design by Gary Nurrish.
  • On back cover below UPC code: $6.99 US $8.99 CAN £5.99 UK $14.95 AUS
  • OCLC <a href="http://www.worldcat.org/title/engineer-reconditioned/oclc/213856887&referer=brief_results">213856887</a>

More on the contents of The Engineer Reconditioned

I just obtained (from my local library) a copy of the earlier trade-paperback version of The Engineer Reconditioned and have been able to compare it to the mass-market paperback version verified by yourself, Wjmvanruth and myself. This has revealed that the mass-market edition does include the stories of "Jable Sharks" and "The Thrake". Like the story "Snairls", in the mass-market version, they do not have any preceding introduction or even a story title. One story ends and the other one begins after a short gap on the page. They are not listed in the Table of Contents. (Plainly this version was not proof-read properly!!)

Details:

In the trade version, "Spatterjay" ends with the sentence "Her own blueness was hidden by the natural colour of her skin, though Ambel had told her she had a pretty blue-white circle in the middle of her back." "Jable Sharks" starts with the sentence "The ship: three masts stitched across the horizon, black against the lemon sky." See page 151 of the mass-market paperback, where one story ends and the other begins with no title or introduction, just a gap.
In the trade version, "Jable Sharks" ends with the sentence "He wonders what the Captain read that frightened him so badly, and if he ever read any more." "The Thrake" starts with the sentence "To Mark, the runcible was the altar to some cybernetic god of technology, and he felt like an acolyte come before it for the first time." In the mass-market version, "Jable Sharks" ends at the bottom of page 164, with a gap with three asterisks in it. "The Thrake" starts at the top of page 165 with no title or introduction.

I will be making changes to notes and contents of the mass-market paperback. Note also left with Wjmvanruth. BungalowBarbara 01:32, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

Unibook date 'codes'

A. McWilliams / Alden McWilliams

Hi. Alden McWiliams (Al McWilliams) is the same person as A. McWiliams, as seen here and other websites. I've pseudonymed A. McWilliams to Alden but that leaves a string of titles that normally would need to be varianted. So my question is: You have verified titles attributed to A. McWilliams on this list. If that was by actual credit, they should be varianted to Alden but if it was by a signature only, the name should be changed to Alden McWilliams, as I see it by our rules. Here are the ones you've verified, could you check them and make any changes? Sorry to burden you with this but I thought it was the right thing to do to. I'm sending this out to RTrace, Rkihara and MLB, who have different issues with the same situation.

A batch of nongenre stories - if you disagree please comment

Currently there are numerous non-genre horror stories that are in the database because it's natural to just enter a book of horror or "tales of terror" without figuring out which stories are supernatural. I don't intend to systematically hunt for them, but when I spot one, I like to mark it nongenre. (In the case of classic stories, marking is better than removing it from the database because it'll just get re-added with some new anthology.) At the moment, I've spotted the following stories that I think need such a change, and I'm consulting people who have them in their verified pubs.

Firstly, there's Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural (verified copies: (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7)), which contains "A Terribly Strange Bed," "The Three Strangers," "The Most Dangerous Game," "Leiningen Versus the Ants," "A Rose for Emily," "Taboo," and undoubtedly other non-supernatural ones that I'm not noticing at the moment. Here are verified publications for those and some other stories (yours is bolded):

Are there any of those stories you think ARE genre? Vasha 15:17, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Particle Theory

This is about your PV of Particle Theory. The last story is credited as "Afterword: To See" on 245, at the tops of the odd numbered pages in the story, and in the Contents. The publication had been verified as containing "To See". I went ahead with adding the VT.

I also updated the pub notes:

  • Change "First Timescape Books printing, October, 1981" to "First Timescape Books printing October, 1981" (the pub record had an extra comma) to match how it's formatted on the copyright page.
  • Added "Another Original publication of TIMESCAPE BOOKS" (on copyright page)
  • Change "Printed in the US" to "Printed in the U.S.A." to match how it's formatted on the copyright page.
  • Moved "OCLC <A href="http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/8131798">8131798</a>" to the external link thing.

--Marc Kupper|talk 17:40, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

ASFAIC, I tend to skip the "Introduction", "Prologue", "Afterwords" etc... parts of titles as it (IMHO) makes for an "heavy" presentation. In this specific case, I found the varianting a bit of an overkill. Hauck 17:54, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Changes are all correct. Thank, --Willem 19:07, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
@Hauck, if you chose to not record a title as stated then there should be a pub-note documenting the stated title. Please see Template:TitleFields:Title. --Marc Kupper|talk 05:56, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Sundiver

This is for Sundiver

  • I changed the pub-note "Cover artist is uncredited and signature not visible on cover." to:
The cover art is credited as "Cover art © 1980 by Bantam Books, Inc." Signature not visible on cover.
  • Added "bp" page number for Sundiver [2] interior artwork to fix the ordering.
  • Added notes to the title records for the interior drawings one and two describing them.

I'm not sure why there are separate records for the interior drawings as I suspect all Bantam printings have both drawings on adjacent pages. We don't list the page numbers for any of them other than being in the bp section of the publications. Our records for later printings (with the new cover) only have one of the drawings in their contents. I've left a notes with a couple of verifiers as I suspect those printing have both drawings. If that's the case I'd like to propose deleting the Sundiver [2] interior artwork title record and to have the record for Sundiver interior artwork be for both drawings. Another option is to change the titles to "The Sunship - Side View" and "The Sunship - Top View". --Marc Kupper|talk 07:55, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Words Without Borders

Hello,

Under which rule are this and this eligible for addition? The current rules for web-only publication are:

      • Speculative fiction webzines, which are defined as online periodicals with distinct issues (note: online periodicals without distinct issues are not considered webzines)
      • Special speculative fiction issues of non-genre webzines
      • One time speculative fiction anthologies published on the Web
      • Online publications available exclusively as a Web page, but only if:
        • published by a market which makes the author eligible for SFWA membership (listed here), OR
        • shortlisted for a major award

This is a non-genre webzine and these are single stories inside of non-genre issues (if we bend the second rule to mean "a story" inside of otherwise non-genre issues or just a story out there, we are literally allowing ANY story published online...) I generally am in favor of allowing these types of stories from non-genre webzines BUT we need a rule change for that. Or do you see it as eligible under one of the available categories above? Thanks! Annie 14:50, 27 September 2021 (EDT)

I see that this is one of those Rules changes (Rules and standards changelog 2018-07-05) that were implemented while Kraang was on hiatus. I would recommend reviewing them carefully because some of the language was very carefully crafted to allow certain types of publications while disallownig certain other types. It can be confusing at first :-) Ahasuerus 15:25, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
Well in my defense I looked at past updates for this webzine and figured it was included[2].Kraang 18:35, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
That one was a "International Science Fiction" issue which is indeed included as a "Special speculative fiction issues of non-genre webzines".
Webzines were not allowed at all and this specific issue was one of the reasons we added that specific subclause. As I said, I am in favor of actually allowing these non-genre webzines in the same way we would allow them if they were ebooks or on paper. If I start a Rules discussion, would you support it the rule change? :) Annie 18:49, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
No. I'll delete the non genre editions. Mostly stayed away from mags and especially web mags in the past. Now I remember why.Kraang 19:02, 27 September 2021 (EDT)
They can be a pain... I still think of reopening the discussion - way too many story do not make it to anything but webzines lately... Oh, and welcome back :) Annie 19:04, 27 September 2021 (EDT)

For now I'll stick with what I know, plus mags and webzines that are all ready established here, the questionable submissions I'll leave in the queue.Kraang 19:13, 27 September 2021 (EDT)

And yet: it happened again (one of the authors pinged on a report). So shall we start a discussion in R&S that will allow these? :) Annie 12:49, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
Which author and what story is the problem? "pinged on a report"?Kraang 16:48, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
I fixed the author who pinged (it had a non a-zA-Z letter in the directory name - that last letter is not a straight i). The problem is that this magazine is still not eligible except for their speculative issues (and children literature issue is not that). :) Annie 17:02, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
Should I leave it as is or remove some or all. I've had lots of practice in the past, thousands of pubs and titles.(non genre and early reader books(you read they look at the big pictures)) :)Kraang 17:13, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
That's the question. :) If we want to reopen the discussion on non-genre webzines and see where it leads us, we may as well leave it for now and we can delete it if it is decided against. If not, it is technically not supposed to be here. I am all for opening the discussion - the current state of the policy was supposed to be just phase 1 of an expansion allowing us to catalog web-only material... So I think we should leave it for now (just let's keep any new ones on hold) and I will restart the discussion later this week. What do you think? And yeah, deleting is part of life - especially with some of the stuff added early on - that and the novel -> chapbook conversions... :) Annie 17:20, 6 October 2021 (EDT)

I changed it to a non genre webzine and added some warnings. If I had of seen the 2009 webzine labeled non genre I would have passed on the submission. /:Kraang 17:37, 6 October 2021 (EDT)

If you see "Editors of" as the author, it is most likely non-genre. We recently changed the rules so we do not enforce the "Editors of" anymore for all non-genre ones but all the older ones will have it if they were not changed and virtually no genre one will. I suspect you may already know that but it had been awhile so... sharing my shortcut :) Annie 17:53, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
Although, ironically enough, the 2009 issue is actually a genre one - so included here and in full... Always fun with those. Annie 17:55, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
Ok 2009 is genre but 2020 is not, how does one determines what content is in since the 2020 content looked like it was genre to me? I'd like to understand where I've gone wrong so I can make decisions about what webzines to approve and what to leave for others. Is there are page or discussion that I can read to get up to speed?Kraang 18:10, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
The stories that were added ARE genre, the problem is that non-genre webzines can only have issues added when the issues fall under "Special speculative fiction issues of non-genre webzines". So the 2009 one being a a Speculative Fiction special issue falls under that rule. The 2020 one is a Children Literature one - it has some genre fiction but as it is not a special genre issue (most of the fiction is not genre), it is out. See the top of this thread for the part of the policy I copied that applies to webzines (web-only - once they have an ebook or a paper version, those are back to the normal rule where we can add any issue but the non-genre ones get only genre contents). I will track down the old discussion where the rule was decided and post a link here - although I remember it being the usual meandering mess. Annie 18:26, 6 October 2021 (EDT)
This was the outcome that actually made this 2009 issue eligible (before that, even it was out). The actual discussion linked there is now here. Have fun! :) Annie 18:30, 6 October 2021 (EDT)

Ok. This helps explain things better. I'll read the thread and be much more careful in the future. Thanks!Kraang 19:13, 6 October 2021 (EDT)

Anytime. You will also see that we called it Phase/Part 1 of the changes. We never revisited because... reasons. I am still considering actually reopening the discussion to at least equalize fiction webzines with e-zines and paper-zines (aka open for non-genre fiction ones at least) - we want these stories, we were just being careful as this was the first time webzines (outside of awards winners and SFWA markets) became eligible and as you can imagine, there are thousands of them. At one point I was tracking 100 crime/mystery webzines (not for here) - allowing non-genre webzines looked like opening the gates too fast; same with the non-issues based blogs/webzines... thus the decision to restrict that way. Let me know if I can assist in any way. And thanks for working the queue on the last weeks! :) Annie 19:25, 6 October 2021 (EDT)

Reviews of non-eligible works

Hello,

We had changed the policy/practice on that a bit - we convert the review to an essay instead of leaving it as a review and with an empty title. We even have a report to clean the non-fiction non-genre that had been added under the old practice... :) So I deleted "The Birthday Ball" after fixing the review here. New Editors and policies

Hello,

Just a gentle reminder to keep an eye on common mistakes from new editors (and not so new - but new are critical before they learn bad practices = easier to teach them now than correct for the next 10 years). Things like Introduction/Afterword essays without the book name attached on them), Cover designers added as cover artists, pb vs tp (very common problem with new people), not using Notes templates (especially Tr, Narrator, A and Publisher), ISBN10 as ASIN, wrong formatted or outright wrong external IDs, links where we have an external ID, lack of notes on sources, not ordering contents when the order is clear (the piped pages numbers) - stuff like that. I know that some of these are new to you as well - thus me dropping a note. :) Annie 17:47, 11 October 2021 (EDT)

(the piped pages numbers)? that's new to me and Notes templates also new, the rest I watch out for as best as possible. You'll note I leave in the queue anything that's really messed up.Kraang 18:00, 11 October 2021 (EDT)
Yeah - I try to process the hairy ones when I see them...
The piped numbers are useful because they will keep the contents in the correct order - we did an aborted attempt to change the default order to alphabetical and it was a disaster... So whenever we know the order, we set it in stone with the piped numbers. See how I did it here. That way the order in the book resembles what the PV/editor meant it to show no matter what the default sorting is or what happens to any title (now it is essentially by internal IDs).
For the notes templates, here is the list. Publisher is usually used on PublisherEdit submissions (to link to one's parent or something like that; people often forget that one). In regular notes - Tr on titles and Narrator on audio are probably the most common. And Incomplete - that needs to be added to any book which has partial contents only and which needs more contents (we can find the empty ones but if you have 4 stories, how do you know it is just a small collection or we are missing titles? Thus the template was born. :) It is not to be used for non-genre works where we won't be added the rest of the stories (and to empty collections where we have a special report for them already).
Don't take that in a negative way - I am just trying to help - the site had changed a lot on the last few years. And new editors learning bad practices is never a good thing. :) Annie 18:10, 11 October 2021 (EDT)
Used some of those Templates in the past and I saw how the stories were keep in order without displaying a number, didn't know it had a name.Kraang 18:27, 11 October 2021 (EDT)
The help page. It's the symbol/character name of | - so piped numbers/pipe method/pipes - you will see it every which way. Sorry for not being clearer initially. :) Annie 18:37, 11 October 2021 (EDT)

The Amazon images warnings

Ah, you missed that fun as well :)

The warning is because it is a /S/ and not an /I/ image. /I/ images are stable - they get linked from various places but once you have an /images/I/ link from Amazon, that one stays stable.

For books: /P/ images are bad (they are ISBN based - when the cover changes for the ISBN on Amazon, the image changes. Not good for us for covers. Behind the scenes, Amazon shifts their /P/ pointer to a new /I/ images.
For authors: The /S/ images behaviour is an unknown one at this point - it is unclear if they stay stable or if when Amazon changes the image of the author they will create a new /P/ image or change this one (linking it to a new /I/ image behind the scenes - the way /P/ images work). But as it will be the image of our author anyway, you can ignore that specific warning for author images - it is just hard to code it to differentiate. Hope that explains the situation with the weird warnings.

And I really need to write that up for the help page. On my list it goes. Annie 19:04, 11 October 2021 (EDT)

Tocchan

Hello,

When moderating Tocchan's submissions, they always require a heavy edit after they are approved:

  • For ebooks, we need ASIN, ISBN when available, price, source notes (they never add notes) and often page numbers need to be moved to the notes.
  • For paper books, we need format change (very often), price, page numbers and source notes.

They also never record exact dates and that means someone later usually spends the time to fix them (they are a good information to have). Every moderator had tried to work with them multiple times, we are just ignored and the quality does not approve. So if you approve their submissions, you are on the hook to fix them after that - see the edits I did here and here for example. :) Thanks! Annie 20:21, 12 October 2021 (EDT)

OK. Figured something was better than nothing and since not verified, then no issues when updated. A quick scan of their Talk page indicated no replies. Will try to fix the print books but may ignore the ebooks for now until I become more familiar with them. If I can't hold it I don't own it.Kraang 20:55, 12 October 2021 (EDT)
Part of the problem is that they are adding future books - which are not properly identified (the lack of ASINs for example makes it impossible for Fixer to know that we already have the book so I get a duplicate and need to deal with it). Plus future books tend to shift and change a lot. So some books end up with 10+ edits in the following months. Thus the attempt to make sure we at least have minimal information when adding.
And even if nothing else is fixed, we should never allow a non-verified book without at least one source listed in the notes (that's why we have that weird Yellow " - No Note data" at the bottom of the approval screen like here - if nothing else, that needs to be fixed upon approval by adding whatever place the moderator checked that the book does exist and the data is correct (and the editors need to be advised - unless it is one of the known ones who never listen). And if you are fixing that anyway, adding the price and a few other pieces usually does not take much longer. A lot easier to track problems when we know the sources. Thanks for the understanding. :) Annie 21:06, 12 October 2021 (EDT)
Figured out how to add the ASIN, but while working on publishers I find a lot of them don't link to anything especially the older ones(ebooks). I was wondering about the "No Note data" now it makes sense. If I don't break something I will never learn how to fix it.Kraang 21:29, 12 October 2021 (EDT)
Re: older ASINs. Amazon started removing old unavailable records a few years ago due to marketing reasons (before that they kept everything). However - other sites (Goodreads for example) and other bibliographies and author sites use them as de-facto identifiers so we keep them on record. If an inactive one is found, a note can be added in the publication saying "The ASIN does not work on Amazon.com/UK/whatever anymore as of date" or something like that. Also - sometimes they work on other Amazons (that's why we have 16 on that line). Please note that for most paper books, the ASIN is ISBN10 so we do not record it separately; we want an ISBN only for ebooks, audiobooks, non-ISBN records and for ISBNs starting with 979 (because these do not have ISBN10 - and without the ASIN for these, we do not have direct link to the record anymore - as the Amazon link on the left uses ISBN10 based links - so now it sends us into the "search for ISBN" instead of the source record). And as of a year or so ago, Amazon stopped reporting ISBNs for ebooks - so without the ASINs in play, dots cannot be connected (and Fixer suffers - although this is less important). Amazon can be fun sometimes. :)
The warning is only yellow because if we force the editors to add notes programmatically, they will start clicking "from the publisher site" (which adds automatic text) which defeats the purpose... So yellow warning and education it is :)
If something does look weird, feel free to ping me :) Annie 21:47, 12 October 2021 (EDT)

Borrowed Hearts

Hello,

Please see this - a few things to keep in mind when approving deletion of books - the pub that got deleted. :) Thanks! Annie 19:47, 19 October 2021 (EDT)

Use to leave them in the past like this[4], a title only and no publication attached. Do we turn the review into an essay and note why it was switched??Kraang 21:51, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
Yup, the rules were changed some years ago. The new rules are as described in the Help section that Annie linked below. Ahasuerus 22:13, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
I'll hunt down the collection and add it back in with that one story and leave a note.Kraang 22:00, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
(after conflict) Because it is not eligible for addition (having a review does not make it eligible) so we follow our own ROA and we do not add books and titles just because a genre publication happens to review it. We had been cleaning the non fiction that was added that way as we have a ton of them - there is a report for that. See also: the help page for NewPub - the reviews section of the what to include where we spell it out that reviews of non eligible books are to be added as essays. The list of what is not eligible is just for an illustration of what types of books are ineligible - it really applies to any ineligible book.
Although in this case, the pub should not have been deleted at all to start with as it is eligible as a non-genre book with genre content (so partial contents only to be added). Use the OCLC link I linked in the post I left to get you started with tracking it down. :) Annie 22:06, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
Already added the ebook will add original HC 1999 next.Kraang 22:22, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
The last sentence was based on your note that you will hunt it down (which sent me in edit conflict) - was just trying to help as I did some digging and no reason to redo all the work from scratch - oclc have ISBNs, then finding a book is easier. And thanks! :) Annie 22:27, 19 October 2021 (EDT)

OCLC mentions copyright 1999 on at least a few of the 2000 copies (and has them as 1999) so probably at least some of the confusion came from that. Biblio says 1999 as well and this isbn pings as 1999 on a lot of selling sites (among later dates). Kirkus claims a pub date in 1999 as well. Goodreads also claims 1999 publication but they do not have an entry for it. So it feels like there is a 1999 book. I will do some more digging tomorrow morning. :)Annie 22:54, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
We can also pull the deleted record from the latest site archive and see what was inside and if it gives us anything about the 1999 edition. On a separate note - do you mind if I rewrite your note a bit? We don’t know if the review reviewed just the one story; we include the one as the only known speculative contents basically - not because it got reviewed (which is how your note sounds). Thanks. Annie 23:04, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
Change the note to something better and add back the missing bits. Found the 1999 and it appears that it was reprinted in 2003, no idea on the 1999 price.Kraang 23:09, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
Changing the notes to "Only the short fiction that is known to be speculative is included; the rest of the collection is believed to be non-genre.". You may want to add some notes about the source of that first edition though. BTW - you do not need to close a li tag :) Annie 23:30, 19 October 2021 (EDT)
All of them need a source actually: unless a pub is verified, we should always have a source listed from where the book was added/checked, with a date attached preferably if the source is online. I fixed the ebook source (As it was obviously Amazon so that was an easy one). I also moved the page number in the notes - for ebooks we never use the Pages field as per the help page: "For ebooks, do not enter in this field the number of pages. The estimated number given by the publisher or some sites may be specified in the "Notes" field.". Thanks! Annie 23:35, 19 October 2021 (EDT)

Serialized essays

Hello,

We cannot have serialized essays due to how we define serials:

  • SERIAL. Use for a title that would otherwise be either SHORTFICTION or NOVEL, but which is being serialized in a magazine, a fanzine or a series of chapbooks.

If you would like to propose that we allow essays or other formats (poems?) to be serialized, we need a rules change discussion. :) But as it is now, they need to be treated as separate essays when published in parts. Annie 01:22, 23 October 2021 (EDT)

Seemed a logical solution, never was one to read the owners manual, just pushed all the buttons and learned the hard way. Serials mostly only found in magazines and this was never a strong area for me so learning as I go.Kraang 11:48, 23 October 2021 (EDT)
While I understand that, I've found that when I am supposed to explain the rules to someone else, it is a good idea to actually check the rules and not assume what they might be. Easier to teach a new editor how to do things than to unteach them in a few weeks/months when someone notices that they are doing something weird because they had been taught so. :)
Magazines can be... challenging. I wish the site had not drifted into two separate patterns and rules books - one for magazines and one for books but we are where we are. :) Annie 00:00, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

HTMLs

Hello,

Li tags do not require their closing /li but you need a ul around them - otherwise it messes up how the site shows the contents. I fixed a few you edited today where you forgot the opening and the closing ul. Thanks! :) Annie 02:21, 23 October 2021 (EDT)

Only notice one warning, would have fixed it but forgot(cleanup report helps me find them). lots of messy submissions to clean up. Would help if some of these new? submitters would respond.Kraang 11:36, 23 October 2021 (EDT)
A couple looked like your own edits - that’s why I stopped by to mention it just in case you have a bad template somewhere or something. It would, wouldn’t it? :) Annie 17:37, 23 October 2021 (EDT)

Publisher change

While approving my submission of the tp The Killing Pledge, you changed my publisher attribution. I entered just the publisher. You decided to change it to imprint / publisher. The standards state that my entry was perfectly acceptable. You might have at least asked my opinion. Yes, the publication is not verified, you were under no obligation to notify me, but, a little consideration. What do you think? John Scifibones 22:21, 23 October 2021 (EDT) P.S. I have no problem with using imprint / publisher, only not being pinged.

Amazon look inside provided a better publisher name so I added it. Since there was no Primary, Transient or Secondary Verifications a minor improvement was justified. If I notify every submitter for minor changes on this type of submission much few approvals would get done.Kraang 23:49, 23 October 2021 (EDT)
On the other hand when we have a newish editor who is eager to learn and is actually paying attention, not notifying them in such cases so they learn how to do things better does not help them grow on the site and moderators will keep needing to change things for them in perpetuity. Just a thought. Annie 23:57, 23 October 2021 (EDT)
Coincidentally, I am trying to start a discussion on publisher attribution in Rules and standards, interested in contributing? John Scifibones 08:51, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

A Curse So Dark and Lonely: The Complete Cursebreaker Collection(Box Set)

Hello,

Can you point me to the rule based in which you added (Box Set) to this title? We will have that in the title if it is printed on the title page (or cover if there is no unified title page for paper box sets) but I do not see it anywhere on this one and it is not a practice to add such things to our titles thus making the ebook title different by necessity and requiring us to to additional variants - as they have actual title pages. PS: And if we add it, it will need a space before that (".

Or did I miss a source showing that as part of the title? Annie 19:45, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

Not ebooks, three pb/tp in a box according to the image and submitters notes.Kraang 19:53, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
Did not say it is - I am explaining what will happen if we are changing the paper box sets titles like that - you are forcing a separate variant for the ebook just so we have something in the title that is not printed anywhere. But a paper box containing other books means no title page so we cannot use the usual method to determine a title. Which means we title based on the cover - the only title we have for these sets. We do not make up a name for these out of whole cloth. The "Box Set" part goes into the notes unless it is actually printed on that cover. Unless I missed a rule saying otherwise - so I am asking based on what rule that was added. Thanks! Annie 19:59, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
Back to the original Amazon cover. Found this title[5] and added more info from the one I own. The original title I found was "The Expanse Box Set" not my words but no where on the box are the words "Box Set" and the data base is full of these.Kraang 20:14, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
Plus this[6]Kraang 20:22, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
Having older titles or titles added under older rules in the DB is not a good reason to keep making the same type of entries. We did not even allow ebooks until relatively late in the project's life or non-Latin characters in title or author names (not to mention web-only publications) so a lot of things made sense back then. Things keep changing and the DB sometimes get a bit... not uptodate. Is the DB full of weird cases that needs fixing? Yes - just look at the Cleanup reports page and that's the tip of the iceberg. But for newer stuff, the closer we keep to reality and what is printed, the better. Except for the few cases we do regularize (publisher names/pub series names, author names with initials and suffixes and capitalization of titles) :) Just saying. Annie 20:27, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
PS: IF anything, that Adams should be called "L!fe, the Un!verse and Everyth!ng" if we want to be exact or just "Life, the Universe and Everything" (considering the ! to be inverted i's so falling under the same rules under which we do not record html in titles) because it is the only visible title... What we have now is a description of the book, not a title of it... Although this may be the wrong cover for that ISBN considering the Amazon record's state. Annie 20:35, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
Not my work. If the words "Box Set" are not on the box having (box set) in title in brackets indicates to me its not printed but if someone is searching titles you can still find all the box sets. Good luck finding them without it. Based on what I see at the book stores there are a lot more to come.Kraang 20:45, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
And "Pub Notes contain "Box Set" is as easy to search for as is (box set) in a title. We can even add a template that puts that in a way that is even easier to search. Will people use it? Same answer as with will they add (box set) to a title - we can keep an eye for them. The difference being that one is actually "title as used" (so if it says "Boxset", "Box Set", "Boxed Set" you do not need to look for all 3 or repeat the "prefered one" in brackets), the other requires us to have a separate record for the box set from its corresponding ebook title record (which can be box set or ebundle or anything like that - and which have proper title pages usually so we have a real title). Annie 20:51, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
This is the same[7] as the the one I was messing around with.Kraang 22:52, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
And it has a note on where the title is coming from: "Title based on Amazon's listing; no cover page or box set cover available.". When it was added, I was not sure this is the cover of the boxset - only Amazon showed that one (pre-release) - they tend to shift when the publisher does not have them. I review these usually when the rest of the formats show up (or when I do the monthly reviews for newly added books). Yours not only did not have a note explaining where the title came from but effectively kinda contradicted the note the editor left explaining why they had the longer title. Let me see if the cover of this box set finally stabilized now that it is out. Annie 22:57, 24 October 2021 (EDT)
Yep, Bloosmbury added the same cover finally so title and note updated. Annie 23:06, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

Bad ISBNs

You were right to not approve it here - that's a somewhat ongoing issue with the French books. We use the correct value in the ISBN field if we can find it and add a note showing the actually printed one and explaining the change (with a source if possible). If the Catalog ID is empty otherwise, we can add it there (helps visualization) - that also maps to the old practice to add # in front of it (which got abolished when we split the ISBN field into ISBN and Catalog ID fields so now ISBN must be numerically correct). Hope that helps. Annie 13:31, 25 October 2021 (EDT)

Remembered adding the # sign. I'll fix and leave message(into the fire).Kraang 13:39, 25 October 2021 (EDT)
Figured you might - that's why I mentioned it and what happened to it. :) Annie 13:45, 25 October 2021 (EDT)
Corrected and left note in pub and on original submitters page, all should be well. :/Kraang 13:53, 25 October 2021 (EDT)

Birthplaces

When birthplaces are entered, they must include the country. See Template:AuthorFields:BirthPlace for specifics. We have a cleanup report that catches invalid ones. I just cleaned up a bunch that were approved by you so thought I'd drop you a note. Seems like they all came from one particular user who is known not to follow our standards and so their edits need fixing when approved. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:08, 31 October 2021 (EDT)

Vintage (UK)

Still work in progress or time to clean this note? :) Annie 15:18, 1 November 2021 (EDT)

Fixed a few "Vintage Books" to "Vintage (UK)". Most "Vintage Books" in C$ are probably "Vintage (UK)" but without look inside hard to be 100% certain. Most "Vintage Books" in Pound Sterling are Vintage Books / London the other 99% are New York. I think splitting them out might be useful.Kraang 16:55, 1 November 2021 (EDT)
I pinged you mainly because of the note. :) Yeah - one of the things I do occasionally is to look at our "same named across borders" publishers and shift books to where they belong - despite all the warnings and explanations, people enter them where they feel like - some are easier to clear, some can give you a headache tracing. The whole publishers system is a mess in places (thus this and we will see where that leads. Annie 17:01, 1 November 2021 (EDT)

Autumn Nights: 10 Sinister Stories to Skitter Up Your Spine

Hello Kraang,

A few things about a book you moderated:

  • A few of our frequent flyers use "pb" for all paperbacks. Most books these days are "tp". So always check the size when pb is used.
  • If the book is not verified source notes are MANDATORY. If the submitter did you add them, add the source you checked the book in. Adding a date of when the data was checked when the source is online also allows us tracing changes if needed.
  • "979-" ISBNs need ASINs - the ISBN based link leads to this which is all editions and not the direct edition; adding ASIN gives us a direct link. For 978 ISBNs the ASIN is ISBN10 so the direct link works.
  • Capitalization rules: "To" has to be "to".
  • This is not the complete contents of the book so the incomplete template is needed so we do not lose track of it.
  • The paperback has page numbers in Look Inside (but at least order should have been added when the titles/authors were checked if they were not there)
  • You changed the date on the book but not on all the titles inside of it.
  • Fay Lane's credit is for Cover Design. Which means that she does not get coverart but just a note.
  • Frank L. Tybush V should be Frank L. Tybush, V

All sorted now. I also fixed the ebook. Let me know if something above needs clarification. Annie 17:07, 2 November 2021 (EDT)

Let me just chime in to add a few things. First, this submission was created by Tocchan, who doesn't communicate via the Wiki, perhaps due to language issues. His submissions tend to have a lot problems and require finding his (usually unstated) sources and then a careful review of the data.
The second thing to note is that the ISFDB software and our data entry standards have evolved since you were last active. We have a lot more "yellow warnings" like the one about "No Note data" which you can see on Tocchan's original submission. We have also spent a great deal of time cleaning up the database -- fixing bad data, adding missing contents, implementing and adding External IDs, implementing and adding transliterated names, adding new templates, adding Edit History, adding more robust support for 979 ISBNs and ASINs, and so on and so forth.
All of the above means that the moderation process has changed. In some ways it's easier due to things like Edit History and better yellow warnings, but in other ways it's more involved and more time-consuming since we check more things. If most of the issues that Annie fixed above are new to you, you may want to consider staying away from working on other editors' submissions until you internalize the new processes. If you want to concentrate on adding data on your own for a few days and then ask other moderators to review the results, I am sure we'll be happy to provide feedback and help identify any areas that you are not familiar with. What do you think? Ahasuerus 17:33, 2 November 2021 (EDT)
US/THEM also needed some help (see the moderator note on my first edit for what I changed but as this editor is usually somewhat responsive, I posted on their page the details as well (combining your and my edit changes in the description) so the link is to it. The images thing is important - we can get in trouble for deep-linking where we are not allowed to or not following the required formats (as was the case here) so if you see the yellow warning for an image for a cover, it (almost) always needs solving even if that means leaving the book with no cover - the exception are some non /I/ amazon images but for non-Amazon images, it always means problems. Plus having these described on the editor's pages makes it easy for the next moderator who works with the editor to see the common problems with their submissions - and to watch out for them :)Annie 20:39, 2 November 2021 (EDT)

I've started to do a check list of things to keep in mind plus a template for notes, was not aware of the ISBN 979 thing. If something is outside the norm I'll ping someone to look it over. Decided not to deal with any magazine submissions by editors like the above mentioned only ones that provide detailed data. Thanks!Kraang 14:30, 3 November 2021 (EDT)

I am around most days so feel free to ping me if you see that I am handling stuff in Recent Edits. Always happy to help. And yes - the 979 is one of those newish things that had become a norm - the main seller for self-signed ISBNs in USA ran out of 978 ones last year so we have a LOT more 979 ones (and Amazon is being annoying with them because their design was around ISBN10 which does not exist for them). So we adjust :) Annie 14:37, 3 November 2021 (EDT)

Cassandra Kresnov series publisher change

Would you be ok with me changing [8] and [9] publisher from Pyr to Pyr / Prometheus Books? See discussion at [10]. Thanks. --GlennMcG 14:33, 8 November 2021 (EST)

It probably will make no difference since this imprint will be merged into just "Pyr". But yes feel free to change it. Thanks.Kraang 20:48, 8 November 2021 (EST)

One of yours

Just heads up that I reversed one of your rejections based on this request. It sounds borderline indeed but with the other copy in - we can as easily delete one as two and it gets marked as genre so... it can as well stay for awhile or until someone reads it and we know for sure. The title has a note explaining that it may be too borderline already so we are all good. Thanks! Annie 20:32, 9 November 2021 (EST)

Nonfiction and essays

Just a gentle reminder to keep an eye for nonfiction inside of fiction books and magazines when approving - a lot of editors forget that these need to be added as essays. I fixed 4 of these here. :) Annie 21:01, 21 November 2021 (EST)

Never occurred to me to look for that, just assumed they where stories. Used the look inside and I see the break down, but with out that I would have to accept what is submitted. Thanks for the heads up.Kraang 22:17, 21 November 2021 (EST)
They were NONFICTION and not "SHORT FICTION" in the submitted record though - I would not have noticed a problem if an essay was added as a short story unless the title was very very likely to be an essay (Introduction for example) :) It's one of the things that trip people that only add books occasionally (that and the pb vs tp - so I always look for both). Sorry for not making it clearer that I meant the "NONFICTION" as ISFDB type and not just the non-fiction pieces themselves. Annie 22:29, 21 November 2021 (EST)

While preparing to PV What Distant Deeps, I noticed the page count was missing the unnumbered pages and the "Author's Note" on pg. ix isn't included in the regular titles. Any problem with me adding the regular title and changing the page count to x+370? Phil 10:25, 14 December 2021 (EST)

Please add it. Thanks.Kraang 21:22, 14 December 2021 (EST)

Kraang: thank you for your welcome note. I have used the ISFDb in "read only" mode for some time and found it extremely useful so now intend to contribute. At first, my submissions may be infrequent and sporadic as I am finding the process quite complex. I appreciate that it needs to be complex because the ISFDb is an extensive and comprehensive system but I hope that I will speed up once I become familiar with it. In particular, I find the Wiki to be quite a minefield so thanks for all those links to pages appropriate to a novice. I had come across quite a few of those pages, but not all. Regards. 2 Rejects

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?5180803; editors can't change publishers, only mods can; I wrote the note specifically so that whichever mod saw it would change the name. also, I left a message on the mod board about your other rejected edit of mine, the Heaven cover, which is actually the same, so you might want to look at that. --Username 23:19, 24 December 2021 (EST)

Khare - Cityport of Traps cover

Hi, I saw on the recent edits page that you'd added an Amazon cover image to this pub added and PVed by another editor. Obviously it'd be down to them to confirm whether that image matches the copy they have, but I had an earlier edition of that title as I kid, and I was pretty sure that design of the Fighting Fantasy covers didn't come in until after the 1984-1985 ranges listed for that pub. A bit of digging around uncovered this page, which indicates that cover from Amazon is from 1987. (I think the copy I had is the one listed as from 1985, but I'm sure that will have long disappeared off to a charity shop, car boot sale or trash heap.)

Hi! Sorry for answering late. You are right. I have now uploaded a scan of my own copy. PortOfHamburg 04:16, 20 February 2022 (EST)
Thanks - nice to have some confirmation that my memory hasn't degraded as much as it sometimes feels like ;-) ErsatzCulture 10:45, 20 February 2022 (EST)

I'll ping the editor who PVed to this conversation for them to give the definitive word - I assume that it'd be preferred to have no cover image rather than the wrong one, especially on a PVed pub? Thanks ErsatzCulture 13:49, 17 January 2022 (EST)

Original submission had no image and all I found was the current one, but as you say its for a later edition, I'll remove the current image. Thanks! Also this submitter only has one edit and you may not hear back. Again thanks.18:13, 17 January 2022 (EST)
No worries - I really should get round to filling in the gaps in these gamebook series, although I think all of my copies of them are long gone. They do at least seem to be reasonably well documented online and in reference works. ErsatzCulture 11:59, 18 January 2022 (EST)

Kinuko (Y.) Craft

I recently cloned Taltos and have had some difficulty with the cover artist, who is credited as Kinuko Craft in the book but this is an alternate name for Kinuko Y. Craft. So far I have made 3 submissions: [11] and [12] and [13], all of which have been moderated by you, but it still doesn't look quite right. I think I now need to merge 676737 and 2990607. Is this correct? It seems to have taken a lot of edits to get the desired result. Could I have done this more efficiently? Teallach 12:32, 20 February 2022 (EST)

Yes they need to be merged. If you look at the main title for Taltos(covers)[14] you will see the two identical variant cover records you have links to. To merge go to Advanced Search and click titles and search Taltos. You want Coverart results in this case the 2nd & 4th result(Parent Title & Parent Authors) match. Select and merge. This will fix things. Check Duplicates will not find this & it takes awhile to find and use Advance search for this sort of thing.Kraang 14:01, 20 February 2022 (EST)
Merge submitted. Thanks for your help. Teallach 15:46, 20 February 2022 (EST)

The welcome templateq

Hello Kraang,

When posting the welcome template, we should be using {{subst:Welcome}} and not just {{welcome}} :) The first posts a copy of the template so if someone edits/responds, it stays on the editor's page. The Children of Anthi and The Omcri Matrix

Would you please look at the changes I'm proposing with these submissions for The Children of Anthi and The Omcri Matrix. In particular, please see if your copy shows a "Stated 1st printing" line on the copyright page of each one. My copies do not. Thanks! Phil 17:33, 25 February 2022 (EST)

I used "Stated 1st printing" in the past when there was less detail in the notes. Mine are as yours. I'll approve now. Thanks.Kraang 19:10, 25 February 2022 (EST)
I would also drop the "Stated 1st printing" line as it's no longer relevant.Kraang 22:06, 25 February 2022 (EST)

Books without sources

Hello,

Just a reminder that when you approve a non-verified book with no sources, a note on the sources needs to be added (usually the one where you checked the data in - if the editor cannot be bothered to tell us what they meant, all we can do is to verify where we know to look). I fixed this one, this one, this one, this one, this one and this one. All of them also needed the number of pages to be removed from the Pages field and the ASIN added. Thanks! Annie 00:07, 6 March 2022 (EST)

Had them on my list of books to get back to. Figured I just approve them & return later and fix them but have been busy approving submissions. Might take a day or a week but I'll always return to finish things. P.S. thanks for doing them, that list is checked off.Kraang 15:09, 6 March 2022 (EST)
Will go back & see if there are hc, tp, or ebooks to add. The submitter of these doesn't include everything that's available.Kraang 15:14, 6 March 2022 (EST)
Fixer finds most of the missing ones and I add them when he does - the different formats get loaded on a different schedule to Amazon though so they come in in different batches. :) Which is how I caught these - as the ASIN was missing, Fixer submitted a few of these again so I just untangled all of them so I don’t get more duplicates. For Quest for the Well of Souls, would you mind if I change the page count to xii+302+[1], add title "About the Author (Quest for the Well of Souls) on page [303], and import the following missing titles?
The Wars of the Well, Part II (Quest for the Well of Souls) on pg ix
Section of Southern Hemisphere (map) (Quest for the Well of Souls) on pg x

Charon: A Dragon at the Gate

For Charon: A Dragon at the Gate, change the page count to [8]+289 and import the uncredited interior art title The Warden Diamond on page [viii]. Would that be OK? Thanks! Phil 12:34, 18 March 2022 (EDT)

The change is fine with me, if you have similar updates for other PV of mine just submit them. My original submissions had only the basic info and only later was the more detailed info being added.Kraang 23:40, 18 March 2022 (EDT)

Sit Down Shut Up and Pull the Trigger

Hello,

About this one. Just a reminder that we record books with the authors as credited and when moderating we are supposed to make sure of that. In this case, the cover has "Michael Todd and Michael Anderle" and the title page of the ebook has the same combination. "L. A. Starkey" is not credited anywhere (and if any of the previous books is an indication, it won't be on the paperbook title page either). This editor has issues understanding how we handle variants and credits in this situation - so he tends to submit the books not as credited but with the actual names of the authors, especially when using AddPub. I've fixed it here so just heads up to please keep an eye for that. Thanks! Annie 17:12, 23 March 2022 (EDT)

PS: They also had the cover of the ebook and not the paperback - in this case they are different. Annie 17:14, 23 March 2022 (EDT)
Let me add an extra heads-up about Michael Anderle. He is a "packager" these days and his name appears on (literally) dozens of books every month. He is usually co-credited with another person, but sometimes the way he does credits inside "his" books is odd. It pays to check the title pages of any new books with his name on them to see how the ostensible authors are credited. Ahasuerus 18:05, 23 March 2022 (EDT)

Oops, needing Help

Hi. Moments ago you approved two of multiple Publisher Update Submission for Readers Union, with different mis-format links to an ISFDB.org target. After 21 months away I am reviewing in Help space some points either forgotten or easily missed by typo, and I wrote a note to familiar moderator Chris J, known to be currently at work. (I thought I would have quite the remainder of the hour, at least, given the length of the cue, where I have another Publisher Update.)
Now I recall Moderator noticeboard which may be for such as this User talk:Chris J#"Help!" from Pwendt.

(minutes later, twice) Fix one matter just above. And sign.

P.S. Chris J has approved the older submission, thus I strikeout abvove. And CJ may fix the other ahead of you or me. --Pwendt|talk 23:01, 25 March 2022 (EDT)

Palm Sunday: An Autobiographical Collage

Hi. You just approved my creation of title/publication:
http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?896101
I didn't mean to create another title, I was planning to use this one, already existing:
http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1277638

I do not know how to proceed now. --Spacecow 07:18, 25 April 2022 (EDT)

Just use the "Delete this pub" and submit, a short note about why and the after its deleted go back & delete the Title Record[15], you will see it is then empty.Kraang 11:34, 25 April 2022 (EDT)
I meant to create the publication, but not a new title. Can i delete the title, leaving the publication without a single title for some time, and then import the correct existing title? --Spacecow 15:54, 25 April 2022 (EDT)
In "advanced search" you can merge the titles records. In "Advanced Search" click on titles & search "Palm Sunday: An Autobiographical Collage". You will get four results. Select the first 1981 that has the parent record & the third which is the one you created 1982 and merge the records. This will get your publication under the correct variant at the same time.Kraang 16:17, 25 April 2022 (EDT)
Thank you for your help :). I have 3 pending title merges now. I hope I did it right. --Spacecow 19:02, 25 April 2022 (EDT)

Publishers project you list

Hi. Does the publishers project you list for yourself refer to relocation of valuable info from Wiki pages to database publishers, and elimination of the Wiki pages? Or something else?

Occasionally 2-6 years ago I added info to one of those Wiki pages. Generally, I don't look at them and may not notice that they exist. I suppose they are much reduced in number, now in the 2020s.

Thanks for your attention as moderator. --Pwendt|talk 11:21, 5 May 2022 (EDT)

Sometimes added to the Wiki page but 99% was on the ISFDB publishers page. I've done a lot on the updates[16] and merging[17]. I'm still actively interested in this area and I'm always interested in finding things to fix. Need to update the project page now that I'm back from three year break.. External IDs approval

Hello,

Just heads up and a reminder: when approving external IDs and web links, please check that they belong to the edition they are added to. That's part of why we have moderation - second set of eyes and all that :) See this one for example. Thanks! Annie 14:43, 15 June 2022 (EDT)

I do random checks on most submitters(left one problem child for others to play with) but after a while if I find no issues I only do spot checks. All new submitters I check everything. If every link has to be checked my approvals would drop to 10 percent or less and the moderator board is getting rather long.Kraang 16:17, 15 June 2022 (EDT)
May be a good idea to at least make sure you check them when approving changes to PVed books - not all PVs are always around to spot and fix the incorrect change and adding incorrect data to verified books is kinda making the whole verification process meaningless. Annie 22:06, 15 June 2022 (EDT)
Yeah, Special K, see the problem was that you ran through dozens of edits in a few minutes so it was clear that you weren't taking the time to look at edits closely and were just fulfilling a quota, and on the very rare (2 times) occasions when you rejected an edit you were wrong on both of them and they had to be un-rejected. If that's being a problem, hey, I got 99 problems but a Kraang ain't one. --Username 22:50, 15 June 2022 (EDT)

The Shadow Eater

Hello Kraang. I wanted to ask you about this publication. As you can see the UK edition I have is by A. A. Attanasio not Adam Lee. I know the contents part shows that fact but the publication metadata has it as Adam Lee. Should it not be Attanasio ? --Mavmaramis 15:57, 2 July 2022 (EDT)

I'll sort it out. It needs to be unmerged. renamed and then merged back with the parent title under A. A. Attanasio. Will do it now. ThanksKraang 16:24, 2 July 2022 (EDT)

Sandkings

Sorry to bug you with another question. It's about this edition of Sandkings.Copyright & title page has "Futura Publications". Copyright page mentions it being a division of Macdonald & Co. Oribt doesn't appear anywhere on the title page or copyright page - the Oribit logo is only on the cover & spine - note does state back cover has "Futura Publications (over) An Orbit Book" - do you think this enough evidence to change publisher to just Futura ? --Mavmaramis 17:09, 2 July 2022 (EDT)

Multi User Write Access Problem

Take a deep breath.
Recently, I made a pub update submission on Larry Niven's The Integral Trees, which you approved. Shortly afterward, Mavmaramis also made a pub update submission, which you approved. This was flagged up in My Recently Changed Primary Verifications so I looked to see what had changed and discovered that a comment I had added to the pub notes was no longer there. The comment was:
"Novel ends on page 235. Dramatis Personae on pages 236-237. Glossary on pages 238-240"
Hereafter, I shall refer to this as the Glossary Comment.
I immediately leapt to the obvious conclusion: Mavmaramis had deleted my comment and you had approved the deletion. (Blood starts to boil.... :-) )
However, after further investigation and inspection of the edit history, I don't think that is the case at all. I think the actual explanation is considerably more alarming: we have a multi user write access problem.
In chronological order, the sequence of events is as follows:
1) 2022-06-27 07:22:39 Teallach makes submission 5350157: PubUpdate
2) 2022-07-01 12:53:14 Mavmaramis PVs pub record
3) 2022-07-01 12:56:58 Mavmaramis makes submission 5353339: PubUpdate
4) 2022-07-01 14:32:43 Kraang approves Teallach's submission
5) 2022-07-02 13:15:00 (approx) Teallach visually inspects the pub record to check it has been updated as expected. All looks good. The Glossary Comment is present in the pub notes.
6) 2022-07-02 13:16:37 Teallach PVs pub record
7) 2022-07-02 16:40:16 Kraang approves Mavmaramis' submission
8) 2022-07-02 18:00:00 (approx) Teallach sees that The Integral Trees has been flagged up in My Recently Changed Primary Verifications, visually inspects the pub record, sees Mavmaramis' additional remarks and discovers that his Glossary Comment is missing from the pub notes.
So I guess what has happened is that during stage 3), Mavmaramis' submission took a copy of the Pub Notes field which, at that time, did not contain the Glossary Comment and added his own remarks. This was then held until stage 7) when it overwrote the Pub Notes field which, in the meantime, had been updated with the Glossary Comment. Therefore the Glossary Comment vanished.
Teallach's submission also changed other fields, such as the number of Pages. These changes have been retained. It is only the pub notes field that has been affected and I guess this is because that is the only field that was changed in both submissions.
Can you please advise whether you think my deductions are correct.
If not, can you please explain what you think has happened.
If I am correct then I have to say that I am extremely surprised that the ISFDb software permits this sort of thing to happen. Multi user write access is a well known, age old problem with computer databases. Prior to this experience, I had assumed that when an editor makes a submission, the ISFDb software would lock affected records, make them read-only and forbid another editor from making a submission on the affected records until the first editor's submission had been processed. I also find it very hard to believe that this is the first time this scenario has ever happened and that I am the first person to notice it. Teallach 14:07, 3 July 2022 (EDT)

Just wanted to add my tuppence worth. I cannot recall if the Glossary Comment was present or not when I added two items to the notes. I'm not in the habit of deliberately deleting meaningful or worthwhile notes and if it did happen it was entirely accidental. --Mavmaramis 15:07, 3 July 2022 (EDT)
I've never run into this problem before(as far as I can remember, been here since 2007 so who can remember everything) and I've always been aware of the issue you are describing, but never realized it was a problem in databases, my back ground is not computer oriented. You may want to approach Ahasuerus since he deals with software updates. When I've noticed this type of deletion in the past on PV pubs I usually Hold and inquire or just replace the deleted info. With processing a 1200 to 1500 submissions a week a few mistakes happen, but all can be made well. I can see in history what is missing so I will add it back. Hope this sorts everything out. Thanks!Kraang 16:01, 3 July 2022 (EDT)
Mavmaramis: The Glossary Comment would not have been present at the time you made your edit. Teallach 18:36, 3 July 2022 (EDT)
Kraang: That's fine. I certainly wasn't expecting you to fix the write access problem. I just wanted to sound you out first to make sure I wasn't jumping to any daft conclusions. I will now draw Ahasuerus' attention to this situation. You did not make a mistake. The Glossary Comment would not have been flagged as a deletion in the warnings column of Mavmaramis' submission. This is a perfect example of why it is so dangerous to allow multiple users to have simultaneous write access. I have seen that you have restored the Glossary Comment today. Many thanks. Teallach 18:38, 3 July 2022 (EDT)

(unindent) Let me clarify a couple of things. First, re:

I had assumed that when an editor makes a submission, the ISFDb software would lock affected records, make them read-only and forbid another editor from making a submission on the affected records until the first editor's submission had been processed.

I am afraid there is nothing in the software that locks records upon submission creation. A single publication record affected by a PubUpdate submission can be associated with multiple author records; multiple (sometimes dozens or even hundreds of) title records; a publisher record; and a publication series record. In addition, a PubUpdate submission can change certain Contents titles' authors, dates and "length values". That's a lot of different records that we would potentially need to lock. Like most other software issues, it would be doable if we threw enough man-hours at it, but it would require a lot of work.

Re:

It is only the pub notes field that has been affected and I guess this is because that is the only field that was changed in both submissions.

This is correct. When a submission is created, only changed field values are added to the submission "payload". This helps alleviate the kind of problem that you ran into.

As far as resolving conflicts between what's already in the database and what's in the submission goes, we have certain tools which alert the reviewing moderator to potential problems. In this case, let's take a look at submission 5353339. The "Note" row has three columns. The leftmost one contains the value of the Note field as it currently exists in the database. The center column contains the value in the body of the submission. The rightmost column, "Warnings", displays any differences between them. In this case it's telling us that if this submission were re-approved, the Note line which currently says:

-<li>Novel ends on page 235. Dramatis Personae on pages 236-237. Glossary on pages 238-240

would be deleted. Similarly, a line starting with the "+" sign would indicate an about-to-added line. They are very useful when a submission changes something minor in a long list of notes.

We have additional safeguards in the software, e.g. any submission which references a deleted record cannot be approved, but for the most part we rely on the "Warnings" system to identify anything unusual. We can always tweak Warnings, e.g. in this case we could color-code "about-to-be-deleted" and "about-to-be-added" lines to make it easier for moderators to see what's going on. Ahasuerus 21:43, 3 July 2022 (EDT)

Couple of points:
A) I wasn't aware that a submission could potentially affect so many records. I have a background in computer databases so I appreciate what you're saying about locking affected records: "it would be doable if we threw enough man-hours at it, but it would require a lot of work.". I accept that we just have to be aware of this situation and learn to live with it.
B) As you suggested, I took a look at submission 5353339 and could not believe my eyes. When I was first investigating this problem, I looked at the relevant submissions in the edit history and I will swear blind that this sub now looks different. Previously, it did not show the deletion:
-<li>Novel ends on page 235. Dramatis Personae on pages 236-237. Glossary on pages 238-240
in the Warnings column. Having thought about it, I think what has happened is that the current view of this sub has been changed by the subsequent submission 5355423 which Kraang made to restore this comment. So this means that at the time Kraang approved Mavmaramis' submission 5353339, the warning would not have been there. Is this deduction correct? Teallach 18:10, 4 July 2022 (EDT)
The Warnings column does a simple "diff" between what's currently (emphasis on "currently") in the Note field in the database and what's in the submission payload. Every time the Note value stored in the database changes, what the Warnings column displays changes. It's not particularly useful post-approval, but it helps the reviewing moderator determine the nature of the proposed change.
It saves a lot of time when the existing Note consists of a dozen+ lines and the change affects a single word or just a couple of characters. Prior to the implementation of the "diff" functionality, the reviewing moderator had to examine ever word, which was both time consuming and tiring. Ahasuerus 18:44, 4 July 2022 (EDT)
I have run into these types of issue many times. Usually with my own submissions being moderated out of submission order (it seems to be fairly common here to moderate in reverse order; I am sure that is some function of how the queue is displayed to moderators or some such). For example: I change a pub note fix some comments and then I make another change to the pub to update several fields including adding some information the pub note. Later they get moderated in reverse order and as a result the additions to the pub note are gone (but earlier comments are fixed) but the other additions to the pub record are still there. This is why I am always careful how I make submissions and wait for moderation before there are too many changes stacked upon one another. —Uzume (talk) 02:22, 7 September 2022 (EDT)

A Requiem for Homo Sapiens series.

Hello Kraang. I want to ask you about this series. Title pages on the trade paperback copies I bought recently have the "A Requiem for Homo Sapiens" as a subtitle on the title page - I made notes about that on the two publications from the series I own - so should the titles not be edited to relect this. I note that only one book in the sequence - and one specific edition - this one has it but in brackets. What do you think ? --Mavmaramis 15:00, 3 July 2022 (EDT)

We use to add these in the past, but no, series names in the title are not added, best to just leave a note about the title page.Kraang 16:04, 3 July 2022 (EDT)

Two unanswered question from Moderator noticeboard

Hello Kraang. Sorry to bug you but two items I posted on the Mderator noticeboard have gone (as yet) unanswered.

1. I found an advert in the back of The Glass Teat refering to this book with blub, size (210 x 140mm) and giving the ISBN as 0 86130 005 X. No evidence this publication from Savoy ever appeared - it doesn't appear on Savoy's website listing of publications - nor does the ISBN appear to exist so should it not be listed as "unpublished" under Savoy's publisher page ?

I think it should be entered. Re Help page "8888-00-00 - The publication was announced (to be released in the past) but was not published." Just use the date in the example and it will appear as unpublished.

2. In reference to this map. It is signed "Arthur Conliffe" so should not not be his true name and "Artie" a variant ?

Best to check with the other PV's and see what their books say. It looks like they both imported the Artie name so maybe a variant needs to be created.Kraang 23:25, 8 July 2022 (EDT)

Edmund Cooper / Tomorrow's Gift

Posted on the talk pages of: Kraang, Willem H, Dirk P Broer, GlennMcG, Spacecow
I will be editing and PVing Tomorrow's Gift
1) the pub record has a contents entry "Brain Child". This matches the TOC but the title of the story on page 63 is "The Brain Child"
2) the pub record has a contents entry "M81-Ursa Major". This matches the TOC but the title of the story on page 95 is "M81: Ursa Major"
I will make the appropriate corrections and add pub notes regarding the discrepancies with the TOC Teallach 17:53, 16 August 2022 (EDT)

Ok by me, remember Brain Child is a variant and after the change it needs to be unmerged and remerged with the parent title.Kraang 22:39, 16 August 2022 (EDT)
My intention is to import the parent "The Brain Child" and then remove the variant "Brain Child". I believe that will avoid the need to unmerge / remerge. I need to make a further tweak to the Ursa Major story though. See this discussion on Spacecow's talk page about the space. Teallach 17:45, 17 August 2022 (EDT)
It can be done several ways, just remember to delete the empty title record it will generate.Kraang 22:19, 17 August 2022 (EDT)
Just remove the faulty titles (both are variants) and import the (existing) 'new' title records. The Brain Child is the canonical in this case. It will auto-merge. Just saw you opened a new can of worms with M81: Ursa Major...--Dirk P Broer 09:18, 18 August 2022 (EDT)
I have just submitted the first edit. You say "remember to delete the empty title record". I presume you are referring to "Brain Child". However, I won't be able to do this because it won't actually be empty. It will still be contained in one publication: the Canadian printing. It seems very likely that this pub record has corresponding errors but it has been PVd by an editor who is no longer active (Bluesman) so I cannot ask him. So I will just have to leave it alone. Teallach 18:32, 18 August 2022 (EDT)
I have numerous books of this era & later that are US & CDN printings & the contents are always the same. This was done as a trick to get around content rules involving duties & taxes on printed material. Change the other to match unless there is strong objection.Kraang 22:49, 18 August 2022 (EDT)
I have long suspected that US and Canadian printings of that era and later had identical contents but as I don't have the Canadian printing of Tomorrow's Gift, I can't PV it and another editor has PVd it so I was very reluctant to alter it. Nevertheless, based on your recommendation, I will now do so. These two pub records both require multiple edits so to assist myself in keeping track of where I am I will:
1) first make all the edits to the US printing
2) then make all the edits to the Canadian printing
3) then the title record for the variant "Brain Child" will be empty so I can delete it.

Roger Robinson / Hale & Gresham Hardback Science(-)Fiction

Regarding my recent approved submission 5403728, I am now not sure how to create a title record with the hyphenated version of the title. Do I go to the title record for "Hale & Gresham Hardback Science Fiction" (ie the unhyphenated version) and use the "Add a Variant to this Title" tool? The associated help page states "avoid using this screen if possible". Can you please advise. Thank you. Teallach 19:12, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

The 1993 pamphlet is already hyphenated so just unmerge it and then make it a variant of the 1988 tp.Kraang 22:48, 26 August 2022 (EDT)
Thanks, I'm with it. Unmerge submitted. Teallach 08:06, 28 August 2022 (EDT)

Macmillan-era imprint Aladdin (Books)

Hi, Kraang. I have several Atheneum, Aladdin, Argo publisher updates in the queue from this week. One was approved by Anniemod two hours ago, Aladdin. In fact that new annotation fits only about 1% of 2000 publications. What do you think of this plan?

  • by 15 or so publication updates, change the name of the Macmillan-era children's imprint, about 1984-1994 (which my Note covers), from Aladdin to Aladdin / Macmillan. That will leave about 2000 "Aladdin" records as broadly contemporaneous with >200 as "Aladdin Paperbacks / Simon & Schuster" and >30 as "Aladdin Paperbacks" representing the Simon & Schuster era, 1994 to date.
  • annotate Aladdin / Macmillan, instead of Aladdin, by cut-and-paste with appropriate modification.
  • annotate the three later Aladdin publisher/imprint records, perhaps only slightly as cross-reference to the predecessor.

--Pwendt|talk 16:53, 16 September 2022 (EDT)

I think we should proceed. If it helps, I can merge a publisher into one or the other name. As a moderator I have more leeway with publisher records.Kraang (talk) 21:14, 18 September 2022 (EDT)
I have started work toward such a change, by improving some publication records without yet change in publisher name. Just now two genuine Macmillan-era Aladdins thus (submissions 5431216 5431222).
For one, all of 0-671- ISBN may be mis-attributions to Aladdin during this era, because Simon & Schuster later reissued those as Aladdins. Anniemod may be approving that batch this hour.
Don't know if/when I'll be back to that today Friday. --Pwendt|talk 14:14, 23 September 2022 (EDT)
One small improvement is to rename the 1950s publisher Aladdin Books as Aladdin Books / American Book Company. The short name is an "attractive nuisance"; we should not expect to handle such nuisances adequately by publisher notes such as --in this case, at publisher Aladdin-- "The Atheneum lineage is not related to the older publisher Aladdin Books."
I suppose that you, as a moderator, can execute such a rename at https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/publisher.cgi?31303 --which will preserve the publisher ID 31303 and its current Webpages, Notes.
I will be able immediately to follow-up and complete such a rename. There is only one use of template link {publisher|Aladdin Books} and a few text references; and one is needed at American Book Company. --Pwendt|talk 14:37, 6 October 2022 (EDT)

{outdent} Are you active this month? I expect to begin use of Aladdin Books / Macmillan (although Aladdin Books itself is now vacant). At least this weekend, all will be updates publications with LC catalog records as Aladdin Books, etc. --Pwendt|talk 12:15, 12 November 2022 (EST)

Initially two: submission 5485515 and 5485518. When approved I will re-write and re-link as appropriate at publishers Aladdin / Atheneum; Aladdin; Aladdin Paperbacks / Simon & Schuster. --Pwendt|talk 13:27, 12 November 2022 (EST)

Dick ~ Tubb / The Man Who Japed ~ The Space-Born

Posted on the talk pages of active PVs.
I am editing and PVing The Man Who Japed ~ The Space-Born and propose to change the date from 1956-00-00 to 1956-12-00 and add a pub note stating the source: Galactic Central Bibliography. I will also add the month to the associated records (title and coverart). I will be adding the month to several other PKD books in the near future. Teallach (talk) 16:45, 27 October 2022 (EDT)

That's fine with me. Thanks!Kraang (talk) 11:57, 29 October 2022 (EDT)
