I've checked my book and confirmed the record currently in the database is correct, using the 'Title page trumps all others' general rule. However, If you put a note in the short story record, and also in both publications it appears in, documenting that we've done something different, and what we've done (namely dropped a complex subtitle) I'm okay with it. DAW Collectors publication series

I and a couple of other editors are trying to formalize the DAW Collectors Books publication series. The consensus is that we should include only those publications that explicitly list their DAW number, either on the cover, the spine, or the copyright page. This applies to, apparently, all first editions and to some reprint editions, but not to most of the reprints. You have verified several DAW reprint editions where the notes list the DAW number. However, I can't tell from the wording in the notes whether this number is listed because (i) it was actually stated on the book; or (ii) the number was inherited from other editions with the DAW number listed. If you have the time, I would appreciate it if you could check these reprints and when they have the number actually listed, update the notes to reflect that. For example, adding "(on cover)" or "(on copyright page)" to a phrase like "DAW Collectors No. 123". The publications you've verified that fall into this scenario are:

• Lackey and Dixon's The Black Gryphon , 8th printing
• Andre Norton's The Crystal Gryphon, 4th printing

Magazine list

Thanks for adding the appropriate links back to the database from the Wiki Magazine list. I'm wondering if perhaps it would look more organized if it were made into a table. At the moment, it's very cluttered. Lining up the various lists (wiki grid, db grid, db list, etc) into columns would help alot. It will take more effort, but would be easier to do while you're adding the missing links. Wiki Magazine tables

Just wanted you to know that I made a few minor changes to the Magazines page. I added a width attribute of 100% to make the tables consistent, and then changed the column widths from a fixed pixel width to a percentage. Those percentages can be adjusted if you feel any column should be wider than the figures I give. Using percentages instead of a fixed pixel width keeps the columns consistent from table to table regardless of the size of the user's monitor. I hope you don't mind my futzing with your work. You're doing the substantial work, and I'm just working on the aesthetics of the display. Feel free to revert the changes if they conflict with any future plans you may have in mind for the page. Oh... and I found the source of the error. An 'Editor's Note' appears on page 183. It begins with a reprint of a letter from Lin Carter to Donald Wolheim. The first sentence reads "Unless the post office has goofed again, you should find enclosed herewith a bundle of manuscript which I have entitled In the Green Star's Spell.", So it appears that Spell was the original working title of this book when it was submitted to DAW. I'm going to add a few more stories to your three verified listings for Robert Barr's The Face and the Mask. I'll be adding the stories that are detailed in Bleiler's The Guide to Supernatural Fiction. I'll also add the source to the notes where appropriate. I also wanted to inquire as to whether your primary verifications of the two earlier printings are from an actual book or from the Google and Internet Archive listings. I've been entering a bunch of books from those two sources and hadn't thought to do primary verifications. There was this discussion a while back which seems to indicate that those who chimed in would support primary verifications from such sources. If that's what you're doing I may as well do it too. And yes, when I can provide a link to a permanently accessible (i.e. Google and Archive.org) set of scanned pages, I've been treating this as a primary verification for years so long as I provide the link. Pain's Collected Tales: Volume One

In Collected Tales: Volume One, the 1916 Stokes edition, you had a note:

Bleiler (And the preface of the collection) indicate that this was originally published by Martin Secker out of London, though no online scans of that prior edition have been identified at this time (Kpulliam - Sept 2010)

SGale, however, found that edition for sale via BookFinder.com, describing binding, boards, etc., and added it and suggested removing your note in this edition. Falling Stars by Michael Flynn

I have a copy of this book from SFBC, but it is NOT their 'standard size', this one is 9.5 x 6.5 inches. It looks like a trade edition, except that it has a dust jacket with the book club ID#35609 printed in the lower right of the back, but no mention of it being a 'book club / SFBC edition and no pricing info. Copyright page looks to be a trade edition with ISBN, cataloging info and even a printing line. Also states First Edition: February 2001. According to my records I got this book from SFBC, but I don't have a date for when I got it. I was going to scan and upload the cover (Correct according to your note) to replace the linked Amazon scan, but the size has has thrown me off. I have gotten a few 'over sized' books from the club over the years, but not many, apparently this is one of them. Does any of this match your copy? George MacDonald's The Portant

You've verified the Gutenberg copy of George Macdonald's The Portent: A Story of the Inner Vision of the Highlanders, Commonly Called the Second Sight and you've helpfully provided a link to the Gutenberg file. Looking at the HTML version, I think the title of the collection should probably be The Portent and Other Stories and should probably be merged with this title. The extended title appears to be the title of the stand-alone novel which we incorrectly have listed as a collection. Happily, there is a copy on the internet archive, so I've been able verify that novel was first published alone. Hi. Regarding your verified pub, if you go by the ISFDB page standards, shouldn't the total pages of the pub be 202+[1] and the page number of the content "About Frederik Pohl" be [203]? When you imported the contents from a 2009 publication into this 1956 publication, the dates of the content records should have been changed to reflect the earlier of the two dates. It certainly wasn't intentional. I admit though, I don't see the (obvious) way to fix the problem. I deleted the second artist record, however I don't see the correct way to remove the second cover record frmo the publication so I can delete it. Removing the cover artist credit in an update of the publication record automatically deletes the cover art record. (This is a relatively recent function.) Mhhutchins 23:19, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

The Year After Tomorrow

Publication Series Winston Science Fiction - Bibliography does not include The Year After Tomorrow: An Anthology of Science Fiction Stories. I wonder whether that is a mistake. You are the only verifier of the only publication of that title Publ 50678, thus probably the author of the last Note on that page, which implies this volume should be included in the series list. I own The Notebooks of Lazarus Long just as you do, however apparently your copy of the "sixth impression" is priced at $5.95 while my copy of the "sixth impression" is priced at $7.95. I've contacted Mhhutchins and they said "Clone the record for Kpulliam's primary verified copy, and proceed to make the necessary changes to make the record match the copy you have in your hand. (This message would have better been posted on the talk page for Kevin Pulliam, so that you two could determine whether his record may be in error.)" Changes needed to Assassin's Quest?

Hi, I recently verified the 7th printing of Assassin's Quest and noticed that the 14th printing you verified seems to need some updates.

1) You used the generic Amazon link for the cover, [here], and this has now changed to the new Alejandro Colucci cover which was released in mid-2014. It looks like yours had the older Steven Youll cover, so the link needs to be updated. The image that was on Amazon at the time you verified this was [this one]. The cover seems to have remained pretty much the same over the years, except for the part just under the author's name where it says "Author of xxxx." If you need another image, I will be glad to look through the Internet Archive for a link to one.

2) Does your version also include a map and an excerpt of Ship of Magic, like the 7th printing? If it does, may I add them to your version?

Question about "The Mysterious Stranger"

In an anthology you verified, Vampires ed. Alan Ryan, there's a story called "The Mysterious Stranger" which has the date in the database of 1823. Now, the editor of Dracula's Precursors says that this story was "originally published in German in 1823 and translated into English soon after" and Michael Sims, editor of Dracula's Guest, says it was first published in English in 1860. If this is true, then the story should have the date of 1860 in the database (and should be merged with this record). By the way, according to Douglas A. Anderson, this story is a translation of Karl von Wachsmann's "Der Fremde", whose earliest known publication date is 1844, but that doesn't affect the question of its earliest publication in English.

Anyhow, my point is, could you take a look at your book and see if it gives any reason to think this story was published in English earlier than 1860? After I collect replies from other verifiers, I'll either merge these records or not. Thanks! --Vasha 19:10, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Found more info: Here's Mike Ashley in Vampires: Classic Tales (2011). "When this story first appeared in translation in England, in Chambers's Repository for February 1854, it bore no author credit and has remained anonymous until now. [Footnote: I am indebted to Douglas A. Anderson and Thomas Honegger for tracing the identity of the author of this story and for providing background details.] Its original source was unknown and when Montague Summers included it in his anthology Victorian Ghost Stories in 1934, he wrongly dated it 1860. As a consequence, the story has been robbed of its true importance. It first appeared in Germany in 1844 and is therefore the earliest known vampire story to be est in the Carpathian mountains, the setting for Dracula's castle." --Vasha 00:31, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

The artist credit for [this] may be wrong. I have a copy, for now, that is cropped differently from the image in the record [from M. Hauck] and there is a portion of a signature in the bottom right corner. What's visible is 'BOB', exactly as that by Bob Larkin. You're PV is transient, but if you still have a copy can you look? A quick note re: your verified What Not, A Prophetic Comedy. Your note reads, in part:

• Apparently there was a legal problem with some part of the text due to the end of the war, and some information had to be tipped or pasted in elsewhere in the book and the distribution of the book was delayed until well into 1919.

According to SFE3:

• Although a few copies of the 1918 version exist [...], this first printing was withdrawn after an offended newspaper magnate (possibly Lord Beaverbrook) threatened to sue for libel: the two passages in question portray a newspaper proprietor attempting political blackmail. With some (rather mild) paragraphs rewritten, the novel was republished the next year, and bibliographies usually date the book 1919.
