When the Waker Sleeps

A quick check would suggest that the variant created is backwards(see authors page[1]). If you like I can fix it or I can give you directions on how to break a variant and you can resubmit. Thank!Kraang 13:09, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Non-English editions

Currently, as described in Help:How to enter foreign editions these don't get separate bibliography pages (title records) but are instead simply entered as publications under the main title. Even when there is no change of language, a title is often dictated by an editor or publisher, and may be actively disliked by the author. A well-known example is Poul Anderson's War of the Wing-Men: the author's preferred title is The Man Who Counts. Another is Isaac' Asimov's "Green Patches" which was originally published as "Misbegotten Missionary", a title Asimov strongly disliked, according to his discussion of the story in Nightfall and Other Stories. So users need to know that any title may not be the title favored by the author, and may not even have been discussed with the author.

All that said, we haven't done all that much with non-English-language publications yet, and we could always discuss how they should be handled. In my view, such a discussion would be best held on the Rules and standards discussions page -- just start a new topic (section) there when and if you want to raise the issue for general discussion. -DES Talk 16:15, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Your edit to this title would remove the note explaining that it was published without the ! at the end. We actually have three title records for this at the moment. i am going to merge two and make one a variant. I'm not sure I really got what you did; did you merge the record with a "!" and the one without ? When I do the search as I did yesterday I now find only two records : the one with the note (I didn't get the note was important, as it mostly says there is a variant and this information is already contained in the list of Asimov's works); and the one with the "!".

So that would mean you can merge records whose titles show some difference in some cases? So then, what happens to "Hell-Fire"?

I merged the two that had identical punctuation, and made the one without the ! a variant of the one with the ! mark. Part of the reason why the note is important is that it indicates the specific work the editor said was checked. Another part is that we have different publications of The Complete Stories, Volume 1 with this story entered differently. In fact I will ask for a general re-check of this volume. "Super-Neutron" by Asimov

Do you know if this story was ever actually published as "Superneutron"? I understand that Asimov used that title in writing about it, but if it was actually published with that title, we will want to create a variant title record. I've checked the two bibliographies of Asimov's writings I have, they both refer to this story as "Super-neutron". I don't have "The Early Asimov" so I couldn't check that, but I assume it has already been done at one point or another, for there are several references to copies of it on the ISFDB.
There may have been a recent publication under the title "Superneutron", as the more recent of my bibliographies goes only until the begining of the 90'. But I don't have any information on that. The only thing I'm sure of (and which is confirmed independently on the website) is that in Opus 100 Asimov refers to it as "Superneutron" (that's why I've been most careful in my phrasing).
I've actually just checked the Opus, in case it is published in full there (it is sometimes the case), and the excerpt is only two paragraphs long... Not much !

I used to have a copy of The Early Asimov I will check there. If i can't confirm I will post a query on ISFDB:Verification requests, which is the standard page for asking people at large to check things against publications.
Our locval convention for discussion pages (borrowed and simplified from wikipedia) is to indente each response relative to the previous post in the thread, coming back to the left with the note "(unindent)" if the indent gets too large. See Help:Editing and Help:Wikitext examples (and the other pages in Category:Wiki Help) for more on wiki editing tricks, tips, and conventions.

Thanks for notifying me. I've put your page on my watchlist as you told to do on it, so I should know when you answer me there.
I won't be able to do much in the coming weeks, for I've finished my bibliographic search and I've got a lot to do otherwise, but I'll try to enter a few more informations I've got on first publications during that time. And then at one point I'll have more time and be able to begin to enter the books I have. I've taken so much useful information on the ISFDB that I feel I owe it a lot!
So you won't hear much from me for a while, but I'll be back!
