Science Fiction Yearbook #1

I found this on the way to looking up something else on the internet. I’d like to replace your image with it. What do you think? And forgive the typo. MLB 21:50, 11 February 2021 (EST)

I moved it over to replace my image & deleted the original. Please always use the upload option from the publication page as that will store it at the right location. Thanks for finding the better image. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:41, 12 February 2021 (EST)

Image templates help

Hello,

Can you come over here and help with the image templates? I rarely work with images not coming from the non-automatic uploads so it always takes me awhile to figure out these. My guess is "Author Image Data" but would prefer a second set of eyes. Thanks in advance! Annie 15:09, 7 March 2021 (EST)

Done. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:21, 7 March 2021 (EST)
Thanks! (and now I know what to do next time) :) Annie 15:25, 7 March 2021 (EST)

What Abigail Did That Summer

Thanks for doing the CHAPBOOK->NOVEL conversion on the rest of these! I knew they were outstanding, but I didn't want to do the remaining 3 until I knew that the first one I attacked was all OK. ErsatzCulture 14:38, 26 March 2021 (EDT)

No problem. I found them via the chapbooks without shortfiction cleanup report. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:47, 26 March 2021 (EDT)

Starlog

This magazine had work done recently after I submitted covers for most issues on here; you're still holding them, so I wonder if you're going to add them, reject them, or should I cancel them? --Username 09:56, 30 March 2021 (EDT)

Doh! Sorry, I forgot those submissions are what started the Community Portal discussion. As it is a not a speculative fiction magazine, we don't allow cover images per ISFDB rules. I have rejected those edits. Thanks for reminding me. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:52, 30 March 2021 (EDT)

Mîncătorii de ziduri serializations

Hello. I wrote some kind of answer to your message here: [1]. I'm not very familiar with these type of communication. Sorry if I did something wrong. Eraser25 15:22, 2 April 2021 (EDT)

No problem. I responded there. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:21, 2 April 2021 (EDT)

Tim Kask

So why did you add Tim Kask back? He has no other credits and I had just gone through the trouble of removing him. TAWeiss 21:34, 18 April 2021 (EDT)

Because the rules changed as I said on your talk page. You removal was prior to the rule change. It doesn't make sense to have all the other issues have an editor and his be the only "Editors of...". He is also not the only Dragon Magazine editor whose credits in the database are solely for the magazine. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:13, 19 April 2021 (EDT)

John Maclay

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?24069; the change was the publisher name which capitalized the L (MacLay) instead of Maclay, the author's name. --Username 18:13, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

Ah, sorry I missed that. Thanks for letting me know. I unrejected and approved. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:47, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

Duplicatation in Author / Editor Names

There is an anthology listed under my author / editpr credits, yet I did not edit it, nor did I have anything to do with it at all. The anthology is a collection of public domain stories, and I suspect the material was simply scraped from a public domain source like the Gutenberg Projet and a random name assigned to it as editor. According to the Amazon preview, it was published in India so I am dubious about the name of the editor. I am not interested in paying the $9.99 to read it just to find out anything else about it.

How do I go about correcting this? HoosierDragon 20:53, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

I believe you mean this publication? Seems like there are just two Terry O'Brien's. It happens. I have disambiguated the two records. Thanks for letting us know. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:07, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

The Voice

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1846358; https://picclick.com/THE-VOICE-by-Colm-Connolly-Hard-Cover-284041373858.html; it was first published in England in 1983 which is where the copyright came from. --Username 23:06, 3 May 2021 (EDT)

Your submission provided this as a source instead. That does not mention the 1983 publication. I have updated the entry based on the new source. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:35, 4 May 2021 (EDT)
I see your note about 1983 but the date still says 1986 so I'll fix that with an edit. --Username 05:33, 5 May 2021 (EDT)
D'oh! Thanks for catching that. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:03, 5 May 2021 (EDT)

™ symbol

Are we saying that all the titles with this symbol have been trademarked? I thought individual written works were not eligible for trademark protection. I'm not questioning your decisions, just asking a question. John Scifibones 13:44, 8 May 2021 (EDT)

No, those stories are not trademarked. They are ones where the author chose to use the trademark symbol as part of the title (usually with a fake product name). They are not an attempt to trademark something. The true trademarks (like the Aliens™ case) are the ones that can be removed. Basically, if it was the author's artistic decision, it should be kept and if it was a legal decision, it can be removed. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:33, 8 May 2021 (EDT)
Thanks, now I understand. I hope that posting that batch didn't cause too much aggravation. John Scifibones 16:03, 8 May 2021 (EDT)
Nope, no aggravation. The intent to clean up the database is appreciated. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:05, 8 May 2021 (EDT)

Thanks!

Thanks for working on the queue and answering editors' questions the last few days! Annie has been mostly unavailable the last week (but hopes to be back soon) and I was busy doing an emergency rewrite of a big chunk of Fixer after a third party tool had become effectively defunct. Always something ;-) Ahasuerus 18:14, 9 May 2021 (EDT)

No problem. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:00, 10 May 2021 (EDT)

Middlemore

So there's a problem with this now, http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?277099, because Moderator Bob rejected my deletion of Maria Middlemore's story with a simple "Why?"; search of Google Books copy of this book showed that it was an ancient tale already on ISFDB, even though the intro by Hugh Lamb seemed to think it had never been reprinted. I wrote Bob a note about why it should have been deleted, so y'all will have to decide whether to unreject and get rid of the now unnecessary Maria record; also, the Lamb intro is only for her story, not for the book as a whole; also also, a couple of my later edits were for another volume in the Darkness Rising series with another old story (G. R. Sims' Ha Ha) and another Lamb intro for the story only and not for the book, where I changed the title to the way it is at the head of the story, and later made an edit because ISFDB thinks there's 2 G. R. Sims when actually they're both the same guy; I'm not sure if I remembered to change the date because it's from his collection The Ring O'Bells (1894). So it's really confusing but no one ever seemed to notice any of this since those books were entered here in 2008 so I'm happy to be the first. You seem to be 1 of the moderators here who knows more about these kinds of complications than some others so I trust you'll know what to do. --Username 19:39, 13 May 2021 (EDT)

I fixed Secrets of Shadows - removed the extraneous record and updated the Lamb essay. As the Google Book images stopped before the essay, I modeled the title on the one in Evil Smiles (which does show the essay page). I also changed the numbers to words in both volumes' titles since the Google Book images show the title pages have the words. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:03, 14 May 2021 (EDT)

Dowsing

Just letting you know that I wrote a note on the Community Portal that the Kenneth Roberts name was wrongly attached to Kenneth Lewis Roberts' record when in fact it was used once as a house name for an old Doc Savage work by Lester Dent. Moderator removed it, but when my added cover for Kenneth Lewis Roberts' earlier dowsing rod book was approved under the name Kenneth Roberts, as it is written on title page, the name went right back to being linked to the Doc Savage. Water Unlimited was also published as by Kenneth Roberts, and I see your name is attached to my edit, so if you do accept my edit the Kenneth Roberts name needs to be separated from the Doc Savage house name again, or maybe as I mentioned in my earlier note these fake science non-fiction books don't really belong on ISFDB and should just be deleted. --Username 09:28, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

I deleted both of Kenneth Lewis Roberts' nonfiction pubs as nongenre. This caused your edit to have to be rejected (since it no longer exists). Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:21, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

Cohen Book

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?703177; After I fixed the odd situation here where editor wrote a note saying 1996 but made the date 1967, I see now that date is 1996 but all contents still say 1967. What's the process for changing those dates? There must be a way to change them en masse rather than one by one; is it possible for editors or something only mods can do? --Username 09:45, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

When the contents are only in a single pub, they can be changed by editing the pub (like here). It still requires changing every date, but can be done in a single edit. If the contents are in multiple pubs, the only way is to edit each title record separately. There are no shortcuts. It would be a nice feature to have bulk edits, but there would be complications and we have a small development team with a large list of requested features. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:27, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

Serpentarius

PV of http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?372030 is long gone, but PDF is available on the ISFDB record under Notes. Essay with changed title is at bottom of PDF. --Username 14:25, 19 June 2021 (EDT)

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:37, 19 June 2021 (EDT)

2 Are Not New

Appreciate you entering contents for Read Your Fears, but 2 of the stories, the Wilson and Lansdale, are from this, http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?35138, and are not original to the anthology. --Username 21:43, 20 July 2021 (EDT)

Variants created. I couldn't find a better source to see if the web page contents were accurate or not. Your searching seems to be better so if you find one and determine that there should be adjustments, please make them. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:42, 21 July 2021 (EDT)

All Hallow's Eve

I saw you rejected my submission to merge "All Hallow's Eve with "All Hallows' Eve", using the later title. Your reason was that it came from a verified pub. I saw that and I agree that's how the editors of "The Crimson Tome" published it. The later is how the author and his editor published it. The problem is that the punctuation changes the meaning of the title. Do we want the same work to have titles with different meanings. That's why I chose merge vs variant. Are you sure I'm incorrect? John Scifibones 12:47, 25 July 2021 (EDT)

We enter titles as per the publication with some limited normalization for case, disambiguation for common titles, and a couple of other cases (none of with apply here). If a publisher or editor makes a "mistake" (whether it be an actual mistake like spelling or incorrect editorial decision), we still enter as it appeared in the pub. Given the second form is the author's version, I switched that to be the parent, but we use a variant for these cases. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:18, 25 July 2021 (EDT)
Thanks for taking a second look. John Scifibones 13:21, 25 July 2021 (EDT)

The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 2007: Twentieth Annual Collection

I have added the month of publication to two titles contained in one of you verified publications Persephone and the Prince Meet Over Drinks & Becoming the Villainess. John Scifibones 17:22, 5 August 2021 (EDT)

Change from merge to variant

I see you rejected these two merges [2] & [3]. I merged the titles vs variating because the difference was generated by the hand typed TOC in the respective publications. Your reason for variating was because the title was listed in several look insides? Where? The Look inside for each pub used the Kindle TOC whether you were looking at kindle or tp. I understand this is a fine point. Just asking. P.S. thanks for processing my queue. John Scifibones 11:51, 7 August 2021 (EDT)

I based it on the poem titles and not the ToC. For Hysteria, if you scroll through the Look Inside, you can see the Bathory poem and it does not have quotes on the title. For Sheet Music to My Acoustic Nightmare, while What It Takes to Sing the Blues is not visible in the Look Inside, there are a number of poems that are and their titles are all without quotes as well. It seems reasonable to assume all the poems are given with quotes. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:12, 7 August 2021 (EDT)
Good point. I now agree. John Scifibones 12:21, 7 August 2021 (EDT)

Caravans Awry

You entered the content titles for Caravans Awry. Is is possible that The Side Unshown - A Tale of Carnival Horror is poetry. A poem by the same title was published here. I need to know whether to merge or add a note that they are two different works. Thanks John Scifibones 14:39, 12 August 2021 (EDT)

It's quite possible. The contents were entered from Amazon Look Inside. As the anthology had other poetry, I suggest merging. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:23, 12 August 2021 (EDT)

Eternal Haunted Summer, Spring Equinox 2015

Thanks for processing some of my submissions. When you processed [4], you immediately submitted merges for the two Shannon Connor Winward reprints. Was this because you don't trust me to take care of it? John Scifibones 13:12, 29 August 2021 (EDT)

Habit. I check duplicates for any new pub submission I process. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:56, 29 August 2021 (EDT)
So I should go back to merging in any existing titles and then submitting separate edits to correct the publications dates? Of course, this will increase the total number of edits per pub. I just recently starting trying this way to see if I could help reduce the length of the submission queue. What about the editors who don't know they are creating duplicate titles? If you just handle them, how do they learn? I think the same thing happens with variants and other moderators. Wouldn't it be better to explain to someone and have them take care of their own? Not criticizing you or anyone else, just tossing it out there. John Scifibones 22:21, 29 August 2021 (EDT)
I'm not sure what you are asking in the first question. Not sure how whether I did the merges or left them for you changes anything. As for the second part, if it is a new user, I would explain it. But you are getting to be an experienced user and seem to have a knack for the database so didn't seem like you needed it explained to you. When there is a clear second step, moderators sometimes just take care of it. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:22, 31 August 2021 (EDT)
No worries. I'm big on self-reliance, it comes from years of cave diving.
On a different note, I think it is time to accept this submission. Hkauderer still hasn't been seen. The Look inside for The 2015 Rhysling Anthology shows the title as "Eventually, You Become Immune" in both the TOC and the Acknowledgments. John Scifibones 14:30, 1 September 2021 (EDT)
Done. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:41, 1 September 2021 (EDT)

The Man Who Made the World / The Scandalized Martians

Hi, I encountered something strange, did you do this on purpose? The Man Who Made the World.--Dirk P Broer 21:38, 16 September 2021 (EDT)

Nope, copy and paste error. Fixed. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:24, 16 September 2021 (EDT)

Elizabeth Davis

The author who wrote three novels under the pseudonym "Elizabeth Davis" in the early seventies isn't the same as the short story writer who wrote a few stories nearly 50 years later; by cancelling my edits the 2 Davises are still together. I also suspect those stories and the 1 story under Elizabeth Davis (I) belong together. --Username 09:27, 19 September 2021 (EDT)

There are at least three Elizabeth Davis's. I have separated them out. Each publication has an associated title record. The publication author and the title record author need to match. It is the title record that determines under which author the publication is listed. Changing the publication author without changing the title record author doesn't work. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:10, 19 September 2021 (EDT)

Samovar magazine

I see you have approved some of my initial edits on issues of Samovar. Then you start making the second stage edits yourself. If you want to update and correct these issues yourself, let me know and I will stop wasting my time. John Scifibones 09:42, 26 September 2021 (EDT)

Pardon? The only follow-on edit I made was making Ji Yun an alternate name to 纪昀 which is not something that you could have done until the variant was approved (as the new author did not exist). How in the world is that wasting your time? I saved you time by not making you do two extra edits. And why should the database remain in a "broken" state (after the variant was approved Ji Yun was an empty page with no linkage to the Chinese name or the titles for anyone landing on it) until you and only you make the follow-on edits? -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:07, 26 September 2021 (EDT)
Clearly I know that the alternate name relationship could not be established until the variant was processed. As far as the database being broken, are you kidding me? For the time it takes me to submit an edit and then have it processed? Go back and look at the sorry state this publication sat in for two whole years. I suspect it would have sat there quite a while longer. In my humble opinion, that is a bigger problem than having Ji Yun sit empty , for the time it takes a submission to be processed. John Scifibones 10:29, 26 September 2021 (EDT)
The existence of bad records is a poor excuse for arguing that we should allow more issues. A moderator has no idea when (or even if) an editor is going to come back to a record. My edit in no way wasted your time. This is a collaborative database with multiple users. People's editing areas will overlap. No user owns a record or the right to edit certain records. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:43, 26 September 2021 (EDT)
I don't claim to own this record or any other. I don't believe you will find an instance where I haven't followed through in a timely manner. Hopefully, the remaining submissions for this pub will be processed soon and I expect to never look at it again. Thanks for your time and your input. John Scifibones 10:59, 26 September 2021 (EDT)

Two questions

Thanks for helping yesterday, I appreciate it.

  1. Variant submission. When I submitted this edit, I knew the title was still a poem. However, I knew there was an edit changing to interiorart before this submission would be processed. Is the governing factor the state at the time of submission, not at the time of processing? (For future reference.)
  2. I see that Tales From the Moonlit Path, Halloween 2021 was created this morning, how come it doesn't show on my recent edits list? John Scifibones 10:26, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
  1. The new parent is based on time of submission. Whatever is entered in the make variant screen is what will be created. If you need to change the variant, you can submit the change and the parent separately, but you need to ensure you set the new parent to whatever the corresponding change to the variant will be. Hopefully that makes sense. I've edited that a couple of times and still not certain I'm saying it the best way.
  2. Weird. The pub has no edit history. I will ping Ahasuerus.
Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:42, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
It gets weirder. The last ten content titles are missing. I just found the complete submission here, in 'In Progress or Errored Out New Publication Submission'. It is Halloween after all. Is there a way to save it, or should I manually add the missing title?. John Scifibones 11:17, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
Yeah, something happened when it was processed. We will need Ahasuerus to look at it. I'm guessing you will need to re-enter, but he may have some magic he can work. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:28, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
I am afraid you are today's lucky recipient of our bi-monthly "Submission processing error" award :-( Out of the hundreds of thousands of submissions created in 2020 and 2021, only 12 suffered this ignoble fate and 3 of them were yours. Given your batting average and the fact that today is Halloween, you may want to stay away from lightning rods and self-propelled vehicles until midnight.
Unfortunately, there is nothing that I can do programmatically. If I were to change the submission status back to "New", re-approving it would create duplicate title records for the 16 titles that made it the first time around. Luckily, there are only 10 titles that need to be copy-pasted into this publication record.
Sorry about the hassle! Ahasuerus 15:20, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
Haha, no problem. Thanks for checking. John Scifibones 15:28, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
If you are going to be working on that magazine, you may want to fix that "from" in the title - it needs to be in small letters everywhere. I can fix the issues you are not touching but if you are updating that one anyway, can you please fix that? I understand that the old issues were not added properly to start with but that's not a reason to make even more errors in the DB. :) Annie 16:09, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
I'll take care of all of them John Scifibones 17:25, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
Perfect. Just as a reminder - there are also introductions and other titles inside of the publications that will also need a minor surgery. Thanks for taking care of them! Annie 17:30, 31 October 2021 (EDT)
I think I got them all, but , I'll check after they are processed. If you read this thread, you know this is not my lucky day! John Scifibones 17:49, 31 October 2021 (EDT)

J. Elle

Hi,

Can you point me to a place in the sources that show that this author is born in Louisiana. I see "her Texas and Louisiana roots" on Amazon but that is far from "born in Louisiana". This specific editor tends to put in "Birth Place" any state/city/country which the authors seems to live in now (or had ever lived in)... but I may be missing something so asking before I wipe it out. Thanks! Annie 03:26, 1 November 2021 (EDT)

I missed the birthplace change as I would have added the country to bring it up to standards if I was to have accepted it. Yeah, that editor is problematic and I normally check what they add. I just missed that one. On this page, the author has "something true to her Louisiana roots" without Texas, but that is still ambiguous as where you spend the majority of your childhood is not always where you were born. I have removed it. Thanks for pointing it out. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:02, 1 November 2021 (EDT)
Thanks. I was making sure I did not miss something somewhere - two pair of eyes and so on :) Annie 16:45, 1 November 2021 (EDT)

The Last Robot

Why did you feel the need to clone the tp for the Last Robot when I was working on this publication? I was waiting for the import to be processed and then I would clone. Your edit has numerous errors. The format is wrong. The publication date is known. I would have supplied documentation to show this (as usual), but, since you are now working on it, I'll leave it to you. John Scifibones 10:04, 7 November 2021 (EST)

What is with your possessiveness about entering data? How was I supposed to know you were going to enter the print version? You summitted the webpage edit to the ebook publication which implies you thought it was for the ebook only. You then went off working another author. If you really feel the need to have your name on the NewPub credit so strongly, let me know and I will delete the entry and you can create a new one. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:29, 7 November 2021 (EST)
What is it? I took the time to investigate so I would have the correct information. Entering the book implies I thought it was for the ebook only, are you kidding? If it implies anything, it implies the ebook was published prior to the tp. If I entered the tp first, I would have had to manually date the contents and go back and edit the title record. You took the easy route and have it wrong. I'm mad because investigating turned to be a waste of my time.
PS The format is tp and the publication date is 2021-02-11. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Scifibones (talkcontribs) .
You misread. I said "You summitted the webpage edit to the ebook publication", not that you entered the ebook. You complaints about wasting your time are a bogus argument. Making a pub edit and editing two fields is less work than cloning a pub and having to edit more fields.
  • What is your source that it is tp when the publisher calls it a booklet?
  • What is your source for the printing date since the publisher's website does not list a date?
If you provide those two, I will make the necessary updates. After that, I will do you a favor and avoid moderating your submissions since it is clear you have a problem with me. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:15, 7 November 2021 (EST)
The source for both is the book launch. The date is self evident. You have to watch the the video, the format is demonstrated at minute 3.00.
I have no problem with you personally, I don't know you. The only problem I have, with your moderating style, is your assumption that I can't or won't follow something through to completion. Whether you moderate any of my future submissions is up to you. John Scifibones 11:44, 7 November 2021 (EST)
Thank you. I have made the edits. I cannot read your mind. I don't know what you have planned and what is completion for any given project you are working on. I have enough lists of things I'm working on that I'm not going to keep note of what you are doing and go back and check whether the scope of your project was small or large. I will focus on my stuff and let you do yours. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:56, 7 November 2021 (EST)

I see you also didn't approve of the US Kindle edition. What was the problem there? John Scifibones 10:14, 7 November 2021 (EST)

There is no such thing as a US Kindle edition. There is a Kindle edition that is sold in various countries. Shoreline of Infinity is a UK publisher and sets their prices in pounds. When known, we use the publisher's price. If that is not available, we use the price from the Amazon in the same country of the publisher. This is the same whether print or ebook. -- JLaTondre (talk) 10:29, 7 November 2021 (EST)

Bundle of Nerves

I saw in Recent Edits you'd done work on an edition of Aiken's book so I checked other eds. and there were several problems; I entered all info from latest edition and had to change/add a lot of stuff, but when I entered it it didn't look right at all. Turns out you'd entered it yourself, so I just rejected my broken edit. Maybe you should double-check your edit to make sure anything you entered wasn't messed up by my simultaneous edit, plus I fixed some stuff for another edition in case you noticed that, too, and don't want to waste time doing your own edit for that. --Username 14:31, 5 December 2021 (EST)

Thanks for the heads up. Everything looks fine. I accepted your edits for the other edition. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:36, 5 December 2021 (EST)

Weird Wild West (move review)

Hi! I deleted a pub[5] but the attached review is for a magazine with a different name, unsure how to best move it. Had problems with magazines and reviews before. Is this area more familiar to you? Thanks.Kraang 17:23, 20 December 2021 (EST)

So the review is of the magazine and not a separate anthology? If so, you can use "Link Review to Title" to link it to the magazine title record (normally, there are issues with doing that since a magazine title record can be for more than one issue, but that is not the case here). You will probably want to update the title to match the magazine also. You can then delete the anthology title record. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:01, 20 December 2021 (EST)
