Welcome!

Hello, Hifrommike65, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Stonecreek 11:28, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Miracle in Three Dimensions

I accepted your addition of Miracle in Three Dimensions, but made a couple of changes to conform with ISFDB standards:

  • Image: You linked to the Amazon page for the book. You need to link directly to the image. To do that, you right click on the image and select "Copy image address" (text will vary based on browser you use). You then paste that into the image field. However, you need to edit the URL before suibmitting. Instructions for that can be found at Template:PublicationFields:ImageURL.
  • Series: I changed the series from a title series (listed at the title level) to a publisher series (listed at the publication level). ISFDB differentiates publisher series (publisher level series like Ballantine Adult Fantasy) from title series (universe or groupings of books independent of publisher like Dune Universe).

I also had a question on the date. You entered it as 2008-00-00. However, in you moderator notes, you stated "Specific date of first issue is given as 28 February 2008". Do you have the first printing? If so, then that should be the date entered. If you don't, you need to add the printing number to the notes and we will create a new record for the first printing.

We do appreciate your submission. ISFDB has some conventions that need learning, but everything should be in the help links in the welcome message above. We hope you will continue to contribute. And please let us know if you have any questions (ISFDB:Help desk is a good resource for asking). -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:39, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

A Short History of the World

I've put your submission on hold, as some points need clarification: 1) The price needs to be specified, there's only one particular price to be added to that field (the other ones can be stated in the notes) 2) You notate that this is the 8th printing of the 2007 edition: it does seem a bit unlikely that 8 printings were published within the same year. Maybe there's some evidence for a later year? Thanks in advance, Stonecreek 07:38, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

The price for the US edition I have is $17.00.

I checked the copyright page again (which is scanned in on the "Look inside!" feature on Amazon.com) & it reads, "This edition first published in Penguin Classics in 2006." Under that a printing number appears, but without any reference to when the printing occurred. The scanned in copy has a "1" for printing number, presumably from 2006. My copy has "8" for printing number. Presumably there were eight printings from 2006 to 2015 when I bought my copy. However, the book is the same in each printing, so there is no reason to mention printing number. The publication date of 31 July 2007 must be erroneous. That is likely when copies happened to arrive to Amazon.com in the United States. Thanks for your help. Mike 08:33, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

I have accepted & corrected (price & cover image link) the entry to fit the ISFDB standards: as there is no hard evidence as to exactly in which year this printing was published, we assign it the date '0000-00-00' (unknown). If you do add an already existing title (as in this case), it's better to use the 'Add Publication to This Title' on the title level or 'Clone This Publication' functions: that way, the two titles have not to be merged in an additional step. Thanks, Stonecreek 19:12, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
Please take a look at the new entry. Stonecreek 19:14, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
One more thing: on the contrary, it is essential to mention the printing no., as we do record the different ones for a given edition. Also, any additional note that might be relevant to describe the book or determine its printing date and/or edition is most welcome, like in this example. Stonecreek 19:32, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Selected Stories of H. G. Wells

Hello, I've also put your submission on hold. If your copy has an ISBN-13 and a different price, it's a different publication than the one you tried to update, it warrants a new record (likely to be dated "0000-00-00"). Is there a number line on your copy? Note also that the cover is from this magazine and could be credited. Hauck 16:36, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for your input. I have compared the scanned copyright page of the second printing on Amazon's "Look Inside!" feature with my personal copy, which I bought in January 2013. I have also compared the contents and features of the book based on the Amazon feature. There is no difference in pagination or contents. The copyright page differs in the following ways. An acknowledgment for permission to reprint three stories in the 2004 edition is missing from my copy. The ISBN differs as I've indicated. The number line at the bottom of the copyright page of my copy reads thus: "6 8 9 7 5", which I believe indicates this is the sixth printing of the 2004 edition. The front cover has a blurb added by Rebecca West reading, "Everything one imagines in the way of genius and fun." I do not have a scan of this cover. If you want one, let me know. As for the cover art, thank you for digging up the original magazine cover, which is reversed and its color rendered in brighter tones. The copyright on the back cover says the following: "Cover art © Forrest J. Ackerman Collection/CORBIS." There is no artist mentioned. I believe this is all the relevant information, but let me know if I missed something. Mike 18:27, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
I've made the necessary adjustments (changed date to "0000-00-00", merged titles and credit cover), result is here. Note that your number line indicates in fact a fifth printing. Hauck 19:32, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Ballantine editions of LOTR

The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings: J.R.R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams

Hello, I've approved your submission but I advise you to ask your numerous questions on the Moderator Noticeboard. A few answers: "If this isn't sufficient to attribute cover art to Cheng" we do not credit jacket designers, the info can be put in the note field, "The Amazon page notes this title was chosen as "Book of the Year by the Conference on Christianity and Literature." Should that appear in the pub. note?" IMHO this should go in the notes at title level not publication level, "Amazon lists a Kindle edition--does that constitute eBook format?" yes it does. If you own the book, it would be interesting to becoming one of its Primary Verifiers. Hauck 07:42, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Changing of primary verified publications

I finally rejected your submission to delete a Ballantine printing of The Return of the King after waiting some time for the discussion with the primary verifier. It is our etiquette to ask primary verifiers before any severe change. This printing may have been mistakenly dated and so only a change of the publication date would have been necessary. Thanks, Stonecreek 13:28, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

The primary verifier indicated his book collection was boxed and he would not be able to check on this edition for some time. I will let it go. I believe the entry is spurious, but without his verification cannot confirm it. Thanks. Mike 12:22, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Well, the one you submitted for was PVed by Don Erikson; and their seems to be some riddle to be solved, see here. Stonecreek 13:59, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

'Artists'

Hi (from me): I have approved of your submission for a new edition of Woman on the Edge of Time, thank you very much for it. However, as you can see here, it automatically induced two new 'artists' that have somewhat unusual names. And ISFBD would credit only one of the normalized names. It's up to you to decide if the photo is the main feature of the cover art or the design that uses the photo. Stonecreek 09:34, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

I think the creative element on the cover is due to the designer, Marietta Anastassatos. I would call it "found art" that takes a stock image and make something artistic of it. Let me know if you want me to submit the change. Thanks. Mike 12:19, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

I've made the change you decided for: and, in fact, Anastassatos already had some works to her credit. Stonecreek 13:55, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Woman on the Edge of Time

There are also two NOVELs featured in the publication, likely because an entry for NOVEL was added, which is unnecessary for any usual booklength publication like NOVEL, COLLECTION or NONFICTION: they are automatically generated. I'll drop the surplus title. Thanks, Stonecreek 09:39, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

You only have to add any special items to NOVEL & NONFICTION.
A special case is CHAPBOOK that is reserved for publications of a single piece of SHORTFICTION or POEM: here it is mandatory to add the SHORTFICTION / POEM content (it's best to view this title type as a special case of COLLECTION). Stonecreek 13:54, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

The Horror from the Hills ISBN

Hi. The ISBN on your The Horror from the Hills submission -- 978-0-9729258-8 -- came up with an error (a digit is missing). The image you linked to on Amazon has 978-0-9729258-0-8, which is a valid ISBN, so I changed it to that. Please double-check against your copy. Thanks. --MartyD 11:18, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Your correction on the ISBN is correct. Thanks for posting. Mike 12:11, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Hello, when entering ESSAYs titled "Preface" or "Foreword" or "Bibliography" (any generic title), you have to disambiguate them by adding the title of the publication after the regular title. I've done this for your last submission and this gives this kind of result. Hauck 20:09, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

This goes also for "Afterword" ;-). Hauck 14:51, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
But conversely when the title is unique enough, there's no need to disambiguate. Hauck 15:26, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

The Shape of Things to Come

Hello, you intend to give an ISBN-13 to a 2005 book. There's a problem with this as ISBN-13 was put into in effect in January 2007. Two solutions: 1) the book is a post-2007 printing or 2) there's no ISBN-13 on the book (perhaps an EAN-13). What are your thoughts on the matter? Hauck 14:00, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for catching this snag. My trade paperback copy, purchased in May 2015, reads "009" on the copyright page. Perhaps the book should be listed as a reprint? Also, I just caught the title page has a subtitle for this edition: "The Ultimate Revolution"--which I have not seen on ISFDB records. The price on the back cover for UK in this printing is 9.99 pounds.
Your is clearly a later printing (price + ISBN-13). In such case it's not pertinent to try modify an existing publication that "doesn't fit" your data. I've rejected your submission, use the "Clone This Publication" at this level. Hauck 14:15, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
In this case, you should set the date to "0000-00-00" (we do not know the pub date with certainty), I've done this for you. Hauck 14:29, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

H. G. Wells: Another Kind of Life

Hello, I've approved your submission but I've made some changes to it: 1) changed to flag "nongenre" to "No" (it's a book about the genre), 2) corrected ISBN (you've got one digit wrong), 3) deleted the extraneous ESSAY (with a NONFICTION record there's no use to add a similarly titled ESSAY except if there's really an essay in the book titled and authored exactly like the whole book), 4) deleted the COVERART record (I transfered the info in the notes). Hauck 14:28, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

300

Hello, I've rejected your submission as we're IMHO quite far from speculative fiction here and more in the comics territory which is NOT what ISFDB is about (IMHO, we should delete any comic or graphic novel present in the db). I may be in error, so don't hesitate to bring your case on the Moderator's Noticeboard. Hauck 17:41, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

I'm not surprised, given the fame of this particular work, that it has come up previously. I think the book (& the film as well) feels like a dark fantasy. But I will not press the issue. I thought I would try. Mike 18:06, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Title Series and Pub Series

Hi. I accepted your changes to The Digital Plague, but I removed the identification of "Avery Cates" as a publication series (and this as #1). Avery Cates is a Title Series (the books would belong to the same series no matter who published them), and the title is already in that series. Note that it's #2 (after The Electric Church), which seems to be correct from what I can tell. See Help:Screen:PublicationSeries and Help:How to work with series for more details about publication series. --MartyD 01:10, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

The Dim Reflection of Philip K. Dick

Hello, I've changed the type of this publication (and its assorted title) from CHAPBOOK to NONFICTION, the former being to use only for fiction (and the later being indepandent of the length) which seems not to be the case here. I've also switched the ISBN-10 to ISBN-13. Hauck 08:17, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

The Nine Billion Names of God

Hello, I've put your submission on hold as your copy may be this already present one. What are your thoughts on the matter? Hauck 15:58, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

You are correct. I missed it. Thanks for your help. Mike 16:00, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
Same question for Tales of Ten Worlds that looks a lot like this other one. Hauck 16:00, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
Agreed, but you might add the publisher's code W8328. Thanks again. Mike 16:04, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
Done. Note that if, there's an ISBN it should go in the designated place, not the publisher's number. Hauck 16:14, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

Dawn

Hello, I've put your submission on hold. What is the source of the publication date? Hauck 19:41, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

I am taking the info from a trade paperback reprint of the pb issued June 1988. Copyright page notes: Reissued, April 1997. It has a number line 20-12, & no price on cover. Amazon (where I bought it Feb. 2013) names publisher's price as $19.99. Should this be listed as a clone?
If yours is not the 17th printing (as per the existing notes), you should clone the publication instead of changing a listed 17th into a 12th one. Hauck 20:33, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

The Mystery of Marr's Hill

Martian.jpg

Hello, please avoid to upload images 1) without the corresponding license and 2) outside the "standard" procedure (via "Upload new cover scan" link). The resulting image is not "protected" by the fair use concept and is not linked to a precise book. I've deleted it. Hauck 17:36, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

The Martian Chronicles

Hello, I've corrected this pub by adding a "#" before the catalog number and correctly uploaded your image. The result is here, note that the essay Prefatory Note (The Martian Chronicles) is present twice (you added one in your submission). Can you confirm? Hauck 17:54, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

I re-edited to delete the 1954 prefatory note. It wasn't dated in the edition, & I didn't double check on Fadiman's ISFDB page. Next time I will. Thanks for your help. Mike 17:56, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

SFBC A Game of Thrones

Hi. I have your proposed changes to A Game of Thrones on hold while I consult one of our SFBC experts about the 54-4410 vs. 1001048. But beyond that, the submission has a couple of problems that you should be aware of (I will correct them):

  • First, you have again attempted to use a title series as a publication series. See my earlier comment, above. "A Song of Ice and Fire" is a title series (the story would be in the same series no matter who published it), and we already have that series here, with the "A Game of Thrones" title already in it.
  • Second, recording information about SFBC editions is tricky and goes against some of the usual data entry standards. In particular, the SFBC usually reproduces the ISBN used by the original publisher on the trade edition. So unless it is an SFBC-specific ISBN, we do not record it in the ISBN field, but rather just put it in the publication notes. See Help:How to enter a SFBC publication for details, explanations, and other helpful hints about working with SFBC editions.

If you have questions about any of this, just ask. I am (and everyone else is) happy to help. Thanks. --MartyD 11:18, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Modifying data and notifying PVs

Hello, about your submission to alter data of this pub, it's considered quite bad manners to modify a publication to such extant without discussing the matter with the primary verifier (in this case me). Apart from this breach of etiquette, you should in this case, clone the existing tp instead of trying to force modifications to an existing record. I've rejected your submission. Hauck 16:09, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

I've also put on hold you submission for The Andromeda Strain, please notify the PV here of the changes that you intend to make. As you own the book (and visibly others) it may be interesting that you become on of its Primary Verifiers which will add some weigh to the data. Hauck 16:12, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
User:Animebill is the only primary verifier for the BOMC edition of The Andromeda Strain so I have left the request on his page as instructed, even though he will not see it. Please check my notice on his talk page and let me know what my next step should be to submit the changes to the record.--Hifrommike65 17:45, 06 June 2017
You can proceed with the changes.Hauck 05:48, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Changes to The Map of Time

Hi, I have made some changes to your verified copy of The Map of Time. I changed the publication date from 2016-06-28 to 2016-06-00 per standard ISFDB procedure, and put information about the exact publication date in the Notes. I also added some information to Notes, including Canada price, LCCN, and more details about what is on copyright page, cover, etc. BungalowBarbara 23:54, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

Alyx Gotfryd vs Alex Gotfryd

Hi, in your verfied copy of Don't Look Now you credit Alyx Gotfryd as cover artist. Can that be a typo for Alex Gotfryd? All the more so because Alex Gotfryd was responsible for a lot of Doubleday covers in his days.--Dirk P Broer 14:53, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

The Man Who Called Himself Poe

Hello, I've approved your submission but made a few changes :

  • regularized publisher to "Gollancz".
  • corrected price to "£1.60".
  • added missing ISBN digit.
  • merged with already existing title (you should have use the "Add Publication to This Title" link instead of creating a new one).

The result is here, to add the scan use the "Upload cover scan" link and follow the procedure detailed in the help pages. You'll also have to enter the contents. Hauck 19:57, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

I submitted the scan but it has not been posted in the last two days. I may have submitted it incorrectly. I have not been on this site for a year and am just getting back into things. Hifrommike65 7:10, 1 June 2017
Yes, you did but you didn't (or so it seems) update the publication record with the resulting URL. I've done this for you. Hauck 06:33, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

One Hundred Years of Solitude

I have a 9th printing of a Bard Avon paperback edition of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude, that dates the 1st paperback printing as May 1971. It does not date the other printings. This 9th printing entered my collection in 1974. There is no verification of the 1971 first printing. Is this copy's information enough to verify the month as May? And how would I submit this information for consideration by a moderator? Or please let me know where the info is posted on how to do it. I can also submit this 9th printing, but cannot date it other than that I had it in 1974. Thanks! --Hifrommike65 6:28 p.m., 03 June 2017

Yes, it's usually enough. Just update the 1st printing with something in the notes along the lines of "precise pub month from 9th printing". Hauck 08:30, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Farmer Giles of Ham

I got an error message on the thumbnail of a new cover scan I did for the 1999 Houghton Mifflin Company hardcover issue of J. R. R. Tolkien, Farmer Giles of Ham, 50th Anniversary Edition. Can anyone help me with this? --Hifrommike65 17:14, 06 June 2017

The Furies

Hello, I've approved your submission but had to transfer the sources you provided from the "Notes to Moderator" (as they disappear after approval) to the Note field of the publication, can you check that it's what you meant? Note that our etiquette requires you to notify the PVs of such changes (as they are likely avid bibliographers, such data may interest them). Hauck 07:55, 21 June 2017 (EDT)

The Dial Press edition of Galápagos

Hi, as this seems the only publication as from Dial Press Trade Paperbacks (and, as in other publications, the copyright for the edition is likely assigned to The Dial Press) it seems that this last should better be inserted into the publisher's slot. Do you agree? Stonecreek 06:12, 24 June 2017 (EDT)

I am taking the information directly from the book. On the title page, the publisher listing is "Dial Press Trade Paperbacks" printed below the colophon. On the copyright page, the copyright is "2009 Dial Trade Paperback Edition." Under that, it reads: "Published in the United States by Dial Press Trade Paperbacks, an imprint of Random House Publishing Group, a division of Random House Inc., New York." Under that, it reads: "Dial Press and Dial Press Trade Paperbacks are registered trademarks of Random House Inc., and the colophon is a trademark of Random House Inc."

On the cover, the spine at the bottom has the colophon & reads "Dial Press." The back cover states, "A Dial Press Trade Paperback."

I recommend that we list the book as published by Dial Press, and in the details below that, that we note the imprint is Dial Press Trade Paperbacks. Hifrommike65 11:15, 25 June 2017 (CDT)

Okay, but it seems the date of publication should be set to unknown / 0000-00-00 as only the first printing is known to have been published in 2009 (according to amazon. Stonecreek 12:31, 25 June 2017 (EDT)
My copy is noted as 20th printing, and I got it in January 2012. Hifrommike65 12:01, 25 June 2017 (CDT)
OK, I'll change the date and add a note. Stonecreek 14:29, 25 June 2017 (EDT)

2069 Trilogy

I need help on the title I just submitted. I mistyped the title as 2019 Trilogy, by Larry Townsend. It should be titled 2069 Trilogy. Also, I have scanned the cover but the submission only has a place for a URL for the cover from a different source. How can I submit the cover I scanned? Hifrommike65 12:08, 8 July 2017 (CDT)

I've approved your submission and changed title as per your message, I've also changed the title series to the existing "2069", chnaged the type to (logically) OMNIBUS and deleted note at title level (they were publication-specific). The result is here. To upload a scan, you'll have to use the "Upload cover scan" link and follow the instructions given here. Note that you'll also have to enter the contents of the omnibus (the three novels, I suppose). Hauck 13:24, 8 July 2017 (EDT)
I submitted the scanned cover jpeg but got this message on Links: "There are no pages that link to this file." I then clicked on "follow the instructions given," but feel like Dr. Heywood Floyd in 2001, looking at the lengthy instructions on how to use the toilet in weightless conditions. I'm sure I'm doing it wrong, but am not sure how. Hifrommike65 12:37, 8 July 2017 (CDT)
After uploading, click on the URL just below the image, this will lead you to a new page (here http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/9/9e/TRLGVDLVVW1995.jpg), it's the URL of this page that should be entered in the publication record, giving this. I've also added the contents and merged them. All is left for you to enter are the page numbers of the novels.Hauck 13:47, 8 July 2017 (EDT)
The omnibus edition is continuously paged. The first novel runs pages 9-243; the second novel runs pages 247-464; the third novel runs pages 467-656. Should I enter that information with the edit feature on the page for this edition? Thanks for you help. Hifrommike65 12:55, 8 July 2017 (CDT)
Yes, just enter the starting pages of each novel. Hauck 05:55, 9 July 2017 (EDT)
Done. Hifrommike65 14:55, 9 July 2017 (CDT)

Hello, I've approved your submission but changed its type to COLLLECTION (a CHAPBOOK contains only one story) and changed to publishet to the author (as per our current usage). I've also uploaded a scan (the link given was not functionnal). The result is here. Hauck 03:31, 26 July 2017 (EDT)

The Children of Llyr

Hello, I've deleted the publication that you've updated, as it's likely to be this one (there are only two days f difference between the pub dates. Hauck 14:20, 5 August 2017 (EDT)

Selected Stories

Hello, I've put your submission on hold. I don't know what you're trying to achieve. As Robert Wasler is clearly below the threshold, we're only interested by his "genre" texts. So in this case, the collection should be entered only if it contains such texts (and they must be entered). If the collection doesn't contain any genre material, it's out (to this day the works present in the db are not in the collection). Can you confirm that there are indeed genre texts included? (and then you'll have to enter them). Thanks. Hauck 03:26, 7 August 2017 (EDT)

I didn't see your inquiry soon enough to reply before you cancelled the submission. (I have been at my local hospital for much of the last 48 hours.) Walser writes surrealistic sketches, somewhat similar to Franz Kafka. I would call him a magic realist by current standards. He did not publish in genre sources, but rather literary ones. Since his work was picked up by ISFDB, I thought it was suitable to submit. However, I have not read all of the book and cannot vouch for the speculative nature of everything in it. Hifrommike65 16:43, 9 August 2017 (CDT)
Hope you're getting well. For your submission, it's better to stay on the safe side and enter texts that we're sure are of spec-fic nature. Hauck 02:53, 10 August 2017 (EDT)

The Blazing World and Other Writings

Hello, can you confirm that the two short stories are genre? After this, there will be other issues to be adressed. Thanks. Hauck 03:28, 7 August 2017 (EDT)

The two short stories are not genre. They are romances only insofar as having love plots. Hifrommike65 14:25, 9 August 2017 (CDT)
I've approved your submission but had to make a few changes to conform to our standards:
  • changed type to OMNIBUS (as the book contains one NOVEL).
  • deleted the two non-genre texts.
  • disambiguated the introduction.
  • merged the NOVEL record.
  • corrected "Bruegel" to "Brueghel" as per your notes (note that this avoided to create a new author).
The result is here.Hauck 03:07, 10 August 2017 (EDT)
I believe I submitted a cover scan for this book, and have done so for several other books in the last few weeks, none of which have been posted yet. Is there a backup in the pipeline for posting covers? Hifrommike65 12:48, 31 August 2017 (CDT)

Ursus of Ultima Thule

I just submitted an update for the Wildside Press edition of this book by Avram Davidson. There was an error in the paging I submitted. It should be vi + 236, not xi + 236. Hifrommike65 1:17 16 August 2017 (CDT)

Done. For the POD bit, IMHO if it's the same book, there's no use to create a new record everytime a copy is printed. Hauck 02:52, 16 August 2017 (EDT)

Future Shock

I have had to reject your edit to Future Shock. You were replacing one edition (21st printing) with another (70th printing). Instead, you should clone the 21st printing to make a new 70th printing. You can do this by going to the publication page and clicking the "Clone This Pub" link. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:36, 26 August 2017 (EDT)

Future Shock ISBN

Hi. I accepted your Future Shock clone, but the ISBN was flagged as bad. I checked Amazon and found the ISBN-13 there to be listed as 978-0-553-27737-1 instead of 978-0-553-27737-5 (the -5 is on the ISBN-10), so I changed it on the record. BUT.... Does the book have an ISBN-13 printed on it? Anything earlier than 2005 would only have an ISBN-10. If it does have an ISBN-13, then that would help confirm it's much later than 1990. Thanks. --MartyD 12:06, 26 August 2017 (EDT)

Thank you for your careful work on this item. You are correct on my typing error on the ISBN. I will be more careful. The back cover lists the 10-digit ISBN, but the copyright page lists the 13-digit ISBN. Bantam evidently makes changes between printings. This paperback still has the original computerized lettering on title & author that the Random House hardback had. I will submit the scan of the cover. Thanks. --Hifrommike65 17:07, 26 August 2017 (CDT)

The Possession of Immanuel Wolf and Other Improbable Tales

Just approved your edits to The Possession of Immanuel Wolf and Other Improbable Tales; I made a change to the title of the Foreword based on the instructions listed under the "Standard Titles" guidelines. I also explicitly added the LCCN as an External Identifier, which is a rather new feature. Thanks, Albinoflea 23:44, 29 August 2017 (EDT)

UFO books

Are UFO nonfiction books within the domain of speculative fiction as ISFDB defines it? I just checked John G. Fuller's page, and one of his nonfiction UFO books appears, but I have two others he did. One I have both in hardback and paperback: Incident at Exeter (1966). Should I submit it or not? Thanks. Hifrommike65 12:53, 31 August 2017 (CDT)

The Interrupted Journey: Two Lost Hours "Aboard a Flying Saucer"

Hello, I've rejected your submission because we usually do not list books about UFO (even if you may find a few of them scattered in the db).Hauck 11:12, 4 September 2017 (EDT)

I consider such books speculative nonfiction, but can understand it falls outside the purview of the site. Thanks for letting me know. Hifrommike65 12:24, 5 September 2017 (CDT)

Selecting a Ghost

You have "Selecting a Ghost" in your verified publication The Best Supernatural Tales of Arthur Conan Doyle as a novelette; if it is the same as this online text, it is a short story. In that case, please correct it. Thanks Vasha 18:20, 9 September 2017 (EDT)

The "edit" feature grays out the section on length of story for the collection selections, so I cannot edit it. Can a moderator? Thanks. Hifrommike65 22:40 p.m., 9 September 2017 (CDT)
Here's why the story records are grey when you edit the collection: because they are also used by other publications. But you can still edit the story record itself. --Vasha 10:45, 10 September 2017 (EDT)

The Sword of Rhiannon

Hi. I have a comment and a question about your two The Sword of Rhiannon-releated submissions, one of which I have on hold. The edit to the title record (the submission I have on hold) adds notes about an ACE cover statement and gives a cover credit. Did you mean to add that to a publication record instead of to the title record? I think it should go with a publication. But then I also think it would be a good idea to add some of the information you provided in the note to the moderator to that title record -- you can state that a comparison of the TWS original and the appearance in whichever ACE edition you compared with reveals the text to be identical, drawing Locus' description of "an expansion" into question. That is very good, and important, information to record permanently. Remember that Note to the Moderator is only on the submission and is not saved.

I have left the other submission to any of the moderators who are primary verifiers, but I will mention: In that publication record, you should cite the source of the date (not in the note to the moderator) -- someone with the book will wonder where it came from -- and because it is primary-verified, you should notify the primary verifiers of the proposed change. Thanks. --MartyD 06:54, 10 September 2017 (EDT)

I asked Hauck whether Corrick's book is sufficient for submitting month dating for the Ace Doubles, and he agreed it is. Corrick had access to Ace publishing records. Hauck primary verified a number of Ace Doubles records, and encouraged me to go ahead and submit date changes. Not all primary verifiers are still active on ISFDB, so I may not get replies. Hifrommike65 8:34, 10 September 2017 (CDT)
Do you want me to cancel the submission and resubmit it? Hifrommike65 1:06, 10 September 2017 (CDT)
Yes, I think should should. This additional note: Cover states 'An ACE Original by Leigh Brackett'. First version in book form.

Cover: Schulz. does not belong on the title record; it should be a note in whichever publication it is referring to. And a portion of this note to the moderator: I took the month of issue from James A. Corrick's Double Your Pleasure: The Ace SF Double (1989), page 15. I do not own a copy of this book, although I do have a copy of the issue of TWS it first appeared in. I could find no textual differences between the two versions, so I believe Locus's description of "an expansion" is in error. should be added to this title record (instead of the information about the cover). The information about Corrick as the source of the month belongs in the publication record, but the fact that you've been able to compare two texts and found them identical is very important for refuting Locus and corroborating the other three sources. You would just need to tweak the wording a bit to identify the two texts you compared (one is the TWS original, but the other is ??? -- seems to be whatever publication you have). Does that make sense? --MartyD 07:09, 11 September 2017 (EDT)

I cancelled the submission and am dropping further edits of Ace Doubles. It's too complicated, with a record that is primary verified. I can't go through this every time I submit a change. Hifrommike65 3:40, 12 September 2017 (CDT)

Joanna Russ's On Strike Against God

I've added the Author's Note to the 1980 edition of On Strike Against God. If your later verified edition has it too, feel free to import it. Cheers. PeteYoung 03:18, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

I added the author's note myself; thanks for bringing it to my attention. I added further information on the 1985 edition as well. Hifrommike65 6:12, 10 October 2017 (CDT)
As you added a second record for the Author's Note, the two records had to be merged. A simple way to do this is to use the Duplicate Finder (under Editing Tools). An even quicker way to do it would be to import the first record by going to Import Content from your pub's page, and simply entering the record number. Presto! Ignore me if you already know this. I did not know. Thanks for the heads up! Hifrommike65 3:25, 12 October 2017 (CDT)

The Moment of Eclipse

I accepted your edit to The Moment of Eclipse. Your publication note states 'Author given as "Brian Aldiss" on cover and title page'. If that is so, then the pub should also be updated to be credited to Brian Aldiss as we credit per the pub. Can you please confirm?

Also, per your moderator note, yes, we would want contents entered. However, since there are prior versions of this pub, it would be better to import the contents from one of them vs. re-entering all the stories. See Help:Screen:ImportContent.

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:49, 16 December 2017 (EST)

Thank you for your help. I have imported the story titles and submitted them. One title adds more to the original title, and I will follow that up. House of Stratus reprints of Aldiss are all as by "Brian Aldiss" (that is visible on the scanned covers), but several of them, including this one, still show "Brian W. Aldiss" in ISFDB. Someone needs to go through all House of Stratus reprints of Aldiss and correct them. --Hifrommike65 3:02 17 December 2017 (CST)
I fixed yours. I will look into the others. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:18, 17 December 2017 (EST)

Year's Best Hardcore Horror: Volume 2

Just to let you know, I added the ebook version of Year's Best Hardcore Horror: Volume 2, and its contents. If you’d like to, you can import the contents from my entry into your verified submission, and then list the proper page number. I can do the stories (from Amazon's "Look Inside" feature), but the author's notes' page numbers aren't listed. MLB 19:37, 9 February 2018 (EST)

I imported the story listings. You missed one story: Andrew Darlington, Coming of the Darkula, following the story by Wytovich. Three stories did not have an Author's Story Note, so I caught that as well. Thanks for your heads up.Hifrommike65 10:06, 14 February 2018 (CST)

Murray Leinster Collection(s)

Hello, I've approved your submission but changed a few things as per your notes to moderator:

  • set publisher to "Eternal Sun Books".
  • changed type to "OMNIBUS" as they contain separately published NOVEL records.
  • uploaded a scan (the link you gave wasn't working).
  • merged contents with existing titles, next time you may wish to go the "import content" route that will save you and the moderator a lot of time.
  • changed type for The Pirates of Ersatz from SERIAL (in a magazine) to NOVEL (in a book).

The results are here and there. Hauck 03:15, 26 February 2018 (EST)

I think I have the same edition as [this] but the cover is totally different from the one in the record and since it's an amazon one no idea who put it there. Just want to make sure before I add a couple of notes and the essay by Crossley to the contents. If it is I'll add a correct image as well. Thanks. --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:02, 10 April 2018 (EDT)

If you have a Beacon trade paper edition, it is probably a different printing that added contents that earlier editions did not have. You might want to clone it and list it as a later printing, if that info is noted on the copyright page. --Hifrommike65 22:40, 15 April 2018 (CST)
Your notes list the Crossley essay, Reader's Guide and the 25th Anniversary sticker, all of which the edition I have does possess, just the cover isn't the same. Same date/price/ISBN/etc. Is the existing record's image correct for the edition you have? --~ Bill, Bluesman 14:48, 16 April 2018 (EDT)

Of Other Worlds: Essays and Stories

Hi. You verified one copy of the first Harvest Books ed., evidently the 1st printing, P627735. There are four printings in the database; three verified, the other two by contributors who are no longer active. I think we should add to all publication records the subtitle that you report, as most library records of the collection do for this and other eds., and thus make the full title of the 1st ed. the COLLECTION title.

1. Concerning the last three contents as listed in the database (all three verified records, which match):

  • 127 After Ten Years (excerpt)

Is that an excerpt from what Lewis completed, or all of an unfinished work?

  • 146 Notes to "After Ten Years"
  • 147 Notes to After Ten Years

Does the book use quotation marks in the title of the notes section? There is a "Look inside" the 2002 Harvest Books issue of the collection ISBN-0156027674, perhaps with identical interior or all but front/back pages at Amazon. Today the "Look inside" includes pp. 146-47, and shows this heading:

NOTES ON AFTER TEN YEARS [or, NOTE TO AFTER TEN YEARS] --Pwendt 2018-04-24

Does that match your book?

2. Concerning the cover, one other verified record of the ed., in its 11th printing at $10.00, shows a cover image P270473. If that matches the cover of your book, it can be added. It's the cover design Amazon US now shows for the ed. as 1975 but that is unreliable at Amazon US

--Pwendt|talk 15:48, 18 April 2018 (EDT)

Thank you for notifying me. 1. My copy uses the last title you list, all caps, with NOTES ON in regular type, and AFTER TEN YEARS in italics. There are no quotation marks. The table of contents page follows that listing (AFTER TEN YEARS, in small italics) with this statement: "With Notes by Roger Lancelyn Green and Alistair Fowler" 2. The cover is bright green with yellow lettering, and with no design other than black and yellow bars separating the author, title, and the statement, "Edited, with a Preface, by Walter Hooper" and then lettered at the bottom of the front cover: "A Harvest Book HB 317 $2.75" I just scanned the cover and submitted it for use by ISFDB. I hope this helps.Hifrommike65 4:47, 21 April 2018 (CST)
Thanks. You should add to the publication record a link to the cover image, wherever it is at ISFDB.
I wrote a title Note for the "Notes" by Green, concerning the different ways the Notes are represented, at least in library records if not in the publications. And a cross-reference from the second "Notes", by Fowler T119113 (both now in the queue). Beside quotation marks, library records also differ as "Notes to" vs "Notes on", as my submitted title Note notes.
When these are approved I will submit merge of the Notes titled with and without q-marks. --Pwendt|talk 15:56, 24 April 2018 (EDT)
Merge submitted, altho the other is still in the queue as I depart. --Pwendt|talk 18:11, 24 April 2018 (EDT)

Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange

Hello, thanks for this publication. However, when the book is not paginated, we count the pages nevertheless and give them in [], like here. The ISBN seems to be faulty, could you check it, or is it more a catalogue no.? I've put your submission on hold, while waiting for your answers. Thanks, Stonecreek 11:26, 8 May 2018 (EDT)

Thank you for your help on this item. The republication listed appears to be identical. I did a page count & it came out the same as the one already listed, 340 unnumbered pages, so that would make it [340] in the ISFDB record, right? The copyright page has this number, labeled SBN: 345-02696-9-395. This number is also on the spine of the book below the title. I don't know how standard book numbers evolved, but the 395 corresponds to the price of the book, $3.95. I checked Worldcat & this edition is not listed. On the front cover at the top left, this information is provided: "Ballantine Book 02696-9-395". You should be aware that the cover and spine use a dot where the hyphen would otherwise be, rather than a hyphen. The copyright page, however, uses the hyphen. I hope this is enough to help you on processing this submission, but let me know if I can provide anything else. Hifrommike65 6:17 9 May 2018 (CDT)
Thanks for the information! The standard book numbers were internationalized & (even more) standardized in the early 1970s, though the possibility was installed as early as 1967. As there's actually no ISBN stated, we do leave it at that: I transposed the SBN to the field of the catalogue ID, and added a further note. Stonecreek 09:54, 9 May 2018 (EDT)

Year's Best Hardcore Horror Volume 3

Hello, what went wrong is that you mistyped Author's Story Note (Bernadette) as an EDITOR record instead of an ESSAY, thus wreaking a terible havoc on the db. I've approved the submission and made the changes and merged what should be (in order to save some time, you could have taken the "Import" route for the texts already in the db). Hauck 11:42, 14 June 2018 (EDT)

Thank you for your assistance. If you could direct me to instructions for importing texts of individual titles, I would appreciate it. I spent nearly two hours on this entry, and tried to double check everything, and did catch several errors, but obviously not everything. Hifrommike65 11:52, 14 June 2018 (CDT)
I don't know if such instructions exist. Let's improvise... Suppose that you want to import this text into this publication in order to avoid to retype (and for a moderator to merge). First go at the target (the one where you want to import content into) publication level, in his case here. Then use the "Import Content" link on the left. A new window will open. Use the "Option 2" part of the screen (the bottom) and enter the TitleId of the text that you want to import, in this case the TitleId is "2200905" and can be found on the top right of the text's record. If you want to enter multiple texts in just one go, click on the "+" button and repeat the procedure. You'll then just have to submit ("import Title" button on the bottom) and wait for approval. Hauck 14:01, 14 June 2018 (EDT)

Five Weeks in a Balloon

You are the only primary verifier of this publication of Five Weeks in a Balloon. I am trying to organize the Jules Verne books and take better account of the various translations and abridgements. This is the 8th (known) English translation of the Cinq semaines en ballon. You have nicely set up the title as separate and identified the translator. Would it be possible to get the first part of translation included in the title record as I have done here, here, here and here? Note that the phrase "Translated by xxx" should be included using a Tr template as in {{Tr|xxx}} to enable future upgrades that identify translators like regular authors. In your case I'd suggest "{{Tr|Frederick Paul Walter}} with notes. Edited by Arthur B. Evans." Thanks. ../Doug H 17:18, 6 July 2018 (EDT)

I just submitted the requested information, and tried to do it in the way you requested. I have a minimal knowledge of Wiki MarkUp, so I hope I did it correctly. Sorry for the delay. Gothic Tales of Terror, Volume One

I've made several changes to your verified copy of Haining's Gothic Tales of Terror, Volume One. First off, I changed the date to 1974 per the note about the reprint on the copyright page. I also change the author and title credits to several of the stories where they differed from the title pages. I was working from an Internet Archive scan of the 1973 printing which presumably used the same plates as yours. Please let me know if you see any discrepancies. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 10:44, 10 March 2019 (EDT)

The only discrepancy I noticed was the dating of William Mudford's "The Iron Shroud" as 1972. It was noted as published in Autumn 1832 in Blackwood's in the introduction to the story, but the page for the story in this database dates it to August 1830. Hifrommike65 4:16, 25 March 2019 (CDT)
That's actually correct. 1972 is the first time that that story appeared with the author credit as "Anonymous". The original magazine appearance can be seen here. Mudford was credited there as 'The Author of "First and Last"'. The earliest evidence of his being credited as "Anonymous" is the 1972 printing of this publication, thus the 1972 date. I'll add the magazine appearance (I hadn't looked it up until you asked). Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 07:13, 25 March 2019 (EDT)

H. G. Wells: Another Kind of Life (2)

Hi. You verified our only previous publication of this biography P576975 as 2010, ISBN-978-0-7206-1391-9, hardcover. Is the book a hardcover that states that ISBN primarily?

Two WorldCat records that I checked report 978-0-7206-1351-3 as year 2010.

British Library reports 978-0-7206-1391-9 as 2012 paperback ed. (BL 015813519, with price £14.99 lower than you report) and 978-0-7206-1348-3 as 2012 ebook ed. (BL 019029405). So do other library records of the 2012 paperback. See the links in AddPub submission 4257624.

I don't find a British Library record of the 2010 hardcover. Visit its record of the ebook by search for the BL number or ISBN, from the record linked above. --Pwendt|talk 18:23, 22 April 2019 (EDT)

Willem, sorry for the delay. I am cataloguing my entire collection of books and mags, and this copy was piled down. I finally found it. Your paging is correct. Thanks for checking it. Mike 13:34, 20 August 2019 (CST)

The Republic

Hello,

Can you please update the format of your verified? I suspect that it is "tp" but just in case it is not, I am not going to update it. Thanks! Annie 20:42, 23 July 2019 (EDT)

I submitted the change: it was a paperback. Mike 3 August 2019 (CST)

ISBNs

ISBN-13 did not exist until 2006/2007 so there is no way this book carried the ISBN-13 during the first publication even if a current reprint does. So I approved the change but restored the ISBN-10 back. I also restored the price and added the note for the price you found in the notes -- list price now is not the same as list price in 1996. Let me know if you have any questions and feel free to rewrite the note if you prefer different wording. Annie 17:09, 7 August 2019 (EDT)

Thank you for the corrections, & I will not quibble w/ your wording. The book does not have a list price on it (like most academic books), & I have no idea what the current printing is. I got it soon after it was first issued, so it's a first printing. Amazon gave the 13 digit ISBN, but the cover of my book has the 10 digit ISBN. Mike 16:28, 7 August 2019 (CDT)
We go by the book on the ISBNs (as you said it was from 1997, I was pretty sure yours either does not have an ISBN or has the -10. If it is indeed there, update the note so it is clear that the ISBN came from the book and not just from Amazon? As a rule, if it is pre-2006, it should always be ISBN-10 - Amazon will always show both so pick the correct one based on the year of the edition. And I understand about the pricing - that's why I left what we had in place - judging by the ID of the book, this was added at the start of the project, probably from an earlier DB. And the price was probably closer to that than to what it is now. :) Annie 17:44, 7 August 2019 (EDT)
Clarification on ISBN submitted. Many thanks for your help. Mike 16:51, 7 August 2019 (CDT)

A Handful of Darkness - Philip K. Dick

Hi, you are PV4 here. I have added additional details from the copyright page here

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?4364585

Thanks. BanjoKev 16:38, 12 August 2019 (EDT)

I have submitted a correction to the page after pulling my copy. You apparently have a reprint of the 1980 edition that is undated, according to Precious Artifacts: A Philip K. Dick Bibliography, by Henri Wintz and David Hyde (2012, page 110). The prices for the PKD reprint, & for New Zealand & Australia, are higher on your edition. Mine also has a price for Republic of Ireland. I got Wintz's first name wrong (spelled it Henry, but he's French) so if the moderator accepts my submission, I will correct that. I have left your prices up, but I suggest you submit a new page for the undated reprint of the 1980 book that you have & then you or I can adjust the info for the 1980 edition. Let me know any concerns. Thanks! Mike 10:53, 17 August 2019 (CDT)
I've created a new submission for my edition here http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/view_submission.cgi?4368866
Could you please check that my copying of your reference to Wintz and Hyde makes correct sense (I don't have their title). If that's ok then the whole submission is good. Perhaps it's best if you adjust the 1980 edition info as you have the book. Many thanks. BanjoKev 16:33, 18 August 2019 (EDT)
BanjoKev, I have submitted a deletion of info on the reprint edition because of your due diligence in submitting an entry for the undated Granada reprint. You might want to consider getting Wintz and Hyde. It is all in color and has every cover of every English-language edition of PKD's books. Mike 13:39, 20 August 2019 (CST)
Mike, nice to see both printings sorted out. Thanks. Precious Artifacts I & II + Pink Beam on order (I have about 60 PKD editions) so thanks a lot for that tip as well! Kev. BanjoKev 23:20, 22 August 2019 (EDT)

The Magic: (October 1961-October 1967) Ten Tales answer

About your question here - sure, why not :) Annie 20:18, 15 September 2019 (EDT)

Gotcha. Will do. Mike 16 September 2019 (CST)

The Solar System and Back

I added the source of the date to the comment here and adjusted the few dates that are inheriting it. As you are the verifier and you do consider it the date (and I agree with your reasoning), it is just down to documenting. Feel free to rewrite the note I left inside of the comments. :) Annie 15:46, 20 September 2019 (EDT)

Celtic Fairy Tales

Hi, I entered content for the 1892 edition of Celtic Fairy Tales and populated your 1968 Celtic Fairy Tales with it. Feel free to edit.--Dirk P Broer 20:48, 30 September 2019 (EDT)

And I did the same for More Celtic Fairy Tales.--Dirk P Broer 12:17, 1 October 2019 (EDT)
Thanks for notifying me. A friend took my Dover edition, and I replaced it. Another friend took my second copy. No more Dover editions were available on Amazon, so I replaced it with a 2014 hardcover facsimile reprint issued by Skyhorse Publishing, which I have submitted via a cloned record. I will not part with that one. Mike 13:33, 1 October 2019 (CDT)
Famous last words (I once had to replace a book 9 times until I managed to keep a copy at home for more than 10 days... Partially why these days I have a "I never lend these books" shelves and a "ok, you can take it" ones...) Annie 13:37, 1 October 2019 (EDT)

A small tip on editing editor's Talk pages

When adding a new item to someone's talk page, instead of pressing "Edit" at the top of the screen and scrolling to the bottom, use the "+" sign next to the Edit tab at the top of the page :) This way not only you do not need to scroll all the way down and figure out how to add the title and all that but also when the notification shows up in the watch screens, the link leads to the edit itself.

  • See your own history page - click on the -> in front of the last edit and it will drop you directly to my message.
  • Compare to the history page of Hauck - see how your last edit does not create the nice -> in front of it? :) Annie 20:01, 3 October 2019 (EDT)
Boy, you guys have all sorts of tricks on ISFDB! :) Mike 19:04, 3 October 2019 (CST)
PS: You do not need to add the ==:) Just type the title of the post. Annie 20:38, 3 October 2019 (EDT)

(unindent) One more tip - when adding external IDs and so on to verified pubs (as I call them the housekeeping tasks), most editors (a lot of them have these listed on "do not notify for these" lists) are ok with just a note in the moderator's note field telling them you added it. Just add the note in the moderator's note field while submitting ("oclc added" for example) -- when the PV gets their notification in their "My Changed Primary Verifications" and click on it, they can read the moderator note - they do not see what was there before that so if you are fixing a typo, it helps to say what typo exactly you are fixing but that reduces the need for full notifications. Bigger changes (covers, contents and so on) still require the old-style notifications. :) Annie 20:36, 3 October 2019 (EDT)

LCCN numbers

The LCCN number here does not belong to the External ID field. The External IDs are for that specific edition.

The number in that case is for the Garden City, N.Y., Doubleday, 1965. edition - this is why it had been templated and not moved to the external IDs. So I will approve the changes but I will restore the LCCN back to the notes with an explanation on why it is there. That way you will also get the notification I was talking about earlier so you can see how editors see your notes :)Annie 20:51, 3 October 2019 (EDT)

More Celtic Fairy Tales

Hi. Concerning this newly permanent PV of the 1968 Dover ed. P629298, you note (quote):

Cover illustration by Edmund Batten, Jr. appears on page 198.

I suppose "Batten" is a mistake inspired by the original illustrator name, and that should be quoted, thus:

"Cover illustration by Edmund Gillon, Jr." appears page [?]198.

Is the page number correct? It's in the middle of one story, from the Contents list. --Pwendt|talk 15:27, 5 October 2019 (EDT)

Thank you for your concern about this edition. Yes, the page number is correct. It is a partial page illustration, with text both above and below it. The cover has a caption at the bottom, below the illustration: "Illustrated by John D. Batten." The title page has "Illustrated by JOHN D. BATTEN." The back cover has this statement: "Because of the careful retelling and John D. Batten's wonderful drawings, all the stories come remarkably to life." Edmund Gillon Jr.'s name appears nowhere in this book. Mike 8:19, 7 October 2019 (CST)

The Wicked Day

About the publisher series here: The novel is indeed the 4th into a series that we call "Merlin" here. The pub series field is for something that is a series only for a publisher and generally should not follow title series. So I do not think we should have it as a pub series - maybe add a note in the Merlin series that it has another name under one publisher. What do you think? Annie 22:57, 7 October 2019 (EDT)

I mentioned the cover & title page info "Book Four of The Arthurian Saga." That should be enough. Mike 21:59, 7 October 2019 (CDT)
I know but you also added a publisher series which I want to remove (as it is not really a pub series in the sense we use the term here) (and I want to copy the note to the title series so it is clear that this series has a double name). Annie 23:03, 7 October 2019 (EDT)
Do what you like; fine by me. Let me know if I need to do anything else. Mike 9:27, 8 October 2019 (CDT)
Done. The problem with having those as pub series is that the Publisher page will get filled with what is in fact a title series. If they had combined more than the Merlin series under that banned, it would have been a real pub series but from what I see, it is just a new name for a series we have. Thanks! Annie 18:29, 8 October 2019 (EDT)
PS: I just realized you are typing the dates. You can just use ~~~~ (4 tildes) and it will add the name and the date. Annie 09:46, 9 October 2019 (EDT)
I'm going to try it in this reply. Btw, I am clearing out a lot of books b/c I am moving within a year from a house to an apartment & will not have room for everything I have now. But if I am the only primary verifier of something here, I will hold onto it for the time being. Mike 10:06, 9 October 2019 (EDT)
If you get rid of something, you can change it to Transient (for the ones you do not keep). This way we know someone HAD eyes on it even if he is not available for questions anymore. :) Annie 10:32, 9 October 2019 (EDT)

Best Short Novels: 2004

Your note saying that the OCLC record has a lot more entries here seems weird - the contents we have for this book matches the OCLC list. Are you saying that some of the contents we now list are not in the book actually? Can you clarify the statement?

And one more note, when adding a GR number, we need just the number so from https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10073699-best-short-novels-2004 you get only 10073699. I will approve and fix that when we resolve the confusion over the contents :) Annie 12:50, 9 October 2019 (EDT)

The OCLC record I found earlier listed additional stories, but I'm not locating it now. The one you found is correct. This is the first time I've linked Goodreads on External IDs, so I'm getting up to speed. When nothing else is available, Goodreads seems reasonable. Amazon reader reviews are often more valuable. However, if I'm interested in something, I don't care what reviews say, I get it. Mike 19:23, 9 October 2019 (EDT)
You are doing fine - you are not the first or the last to do that. :) If that was the only change, I would have approved, fixed and then updated you on the why - it was the OCLC note that made me stop and come check first :)
GoodReads is decent and they have stable IDs -- this is why we have it as an external ID :) Anything on that list is considered good (note that ASIN is to be used only for books that have ASIN starting with B, otherwise it is just their ISBN-10 so we leave that to the ISBN link (see below). The OCLC I linked above is the one that is linked to the book already as an External ID (that is why we have the OCLC there - because just searching even by ISBNs turns all kinds of weird stuff). I will reject your update then and just add the GR after that.
If you look on the left menu when you are inside of a publication, there is a "Other sites" menu - just click on the bar and it opens a long list of links (does not work on touch screens...). Links based on the ISBN are hiding there :) So you can get to Amazon and a lot more sites - and as the search by ISBN on Amazon is stable, we do not need to add a special Amazon link in the external IDs. If you want to restrict your own list of those sites, go to My Preferences and click on "My Web Site" :) Annie 20:17, 9 October 2019 (EDT)

Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels

Added one more OCLC ID to this one - see my moderator note here. You can see the same from the "Changed Primary Notifications - click on the submission ID) but in case you had not discovered that yet, decoded to stop by and point you in that way. Annie 21:00, 9 October 2019 (EDT)

I just submitted an OCLC record for the 1986 Carroll & Graf edition, which has a dating error due to an unclear copyright page. Hope I did it right. Mike 03:26, 2 May 2020 (EDT)

Starmont Reader's Guides

I'm trying to find out how the cover illustrations were credited in the early Starmont reader's guides. In most of the guides I own the credit is as 'Stephen E. Fabian, Sr. and Jr.'. You verified Robert Silverberg. Is it really credited to ' Stephen E. Fabian'? Thanks, --Willem 15:30, 11 October 2019 (EDT)

I have the Silverberg in a 2nd edition and http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?724677 Both have the following statement on their copyright pages: "Cover design by Stephen E. Fabian." It is not clear if the attribution covers the artwork, but it appears that it does. The cover art on both books is identical. Mike 22:42, 12 October 2019 (EDT)
On ISFDB every edition of a book should have it's own publication record. In this case you should clone the existing record for your pub. Thanks for checking anyway, this means the 'Sr. and Jr.' credit was dropped by Starmont at some point (somewhere between 12 and 18). I'll ask Horzel to check his copy as well. Thanks! --Willem 14:16, 13 October 2019 (EDT)

Brian W. Aldiss

Hi, why makes your buying your copy of Brian W. Aldiss in February 1995 change the publication month in 1986?--Dirk P Broer 07:16, 13 October 2019 (EDT)

I took the publication month from the copyright page of the book, which reads "First Edition--February 1986." I mention my date of acquisition in moderator's note to confirm my purchase of the book. Mike 15:05, 13 October 2019 (EDT)
You'd better put 'publication month from the copyright page of the book' and 'First Edition--February 1986' into the note field next time.--Dirk P Broer 05:15, 14 October 2019 (EDT)

Entering reviews

Welcome back :) Glad to see you around again. Annie 19:37, 24 April 2020 (EDT)
This was way too much drama, so I've deleted the rest of this exchange. I wanted to tell you why I came back to ISFDB. Besides missing it, I felt I owed it something for teaching me how to profile a book. I use it for publications other than spec fic as well. Mike 13:56, 10 June 2020 (EDT)

Ace Fitzroy editions of Jules Verne

I've updated the Publisher Series The Fitzroy Edition of Jules Verne by amalgamating the information from the wiki page. Because this has been set up as a publisher series, the Ace editions don't quite fit, so I have taken the liberty of modifying these publications to refer to a new series The Fitzroy Edition of Jules Verne (Ace), which I will make a dependant of the original series. ../Doug H 15:37, 18 February 2020 (EST)

Make Room! Make Room!

About the ISBN here. What date is that Kirkus Review from - aka when was it added and last updated? OCLC also give this ISBN for this edition but ISBNs started in 1970 and this is a few years earlier. The later 2008 Orb reprint actually carried this ISBN - thus me asking if it is possible that the data got merged/contaminated? 1966 MAY have SBNs but even they were not that common at this point (they were created in 1966). So... I would not add an ISBN to a 1966 book based solely on secondary sources - it cannot have been printed on it unless the history of ISBN as we know it is actually wrong.

What do you think? Annie 14:36, 28 April 2020 (EDT)

I believe you are correct on the ISBN. It was corrupted data. However, Kirkus has been accepted as a source for day of publication on this site previously. Do you think that can go through? Mike 07:26, 29 April 2020 (EDT)
Absolutely -- approved, removed the ISBN and added a note and a link to Kirkus in the URL field (see here). I put it on hold until we can resolve how it gets cleaned up -- otherwise things get dropped and we forget to follow-up. :) Annie 13:42, 30 April 2020 (EDT)

Exiled from Earth

[This OCLC https://www.worldcat.org/title/exiled-from-earth/oclc/1034667095] is a record for an ebook, not for the hardcover (probably a digitization so it still says 1971 as the year but the format is wrong: "Edition/Format: eBook : Document : Fiction : English : [1st ed.]"). I know that it also says printed "Additional Physical Format" below but this is common for digitization records. If you check the link to Open Library, it points back to a different OCLC as well. We can use these OCLC records for older books that cannot have ebooks on this edition really if we do not have a better one and with a note that it is for a digital copy and not the actual book.

A correct/better OCLC seems to be 135552 so I fixed it here. Hope this makes sense and please do not hesitate to disagree or post any questions you may have. Annie 17:59, 1 May 2020 (EDT)

Yes, you interpreted it better than I did. That must be why you're the boss. Thanks for fixing it. Mike 02:58, 2 May 2020 (EDT)

Science Fiction: The Best of the Year, 2007 Edition

Question on the pub note added to Science Fiction: The Best of the Year, 2007 Edition: You list the ISBN13. Is this actually printed on the pub? If so, we would use the ISBN13 in the ISBN field instead of the ISBN10. If not, the ISBN field always shows both forms. It does an auto conversion between the two. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:22, 3 May 2020 (EDT)

Yes, both ISBNs appear on the back cover of the book. ISBN 10 is printed over ISBN 13. ISBN 10 is 0-8439-5904-5. Mike 21:39, 3 May 2020 (EDT)

Amazon and small presses credits

Amazon is notoriously bad with small presses -- it will list CreateSpace or "Independently published" or something similar to a lot of books which have publishers on their title pages. As a rule, unless it is one of the big publishers (and even for them sometimes), Amazon is unreliable for crediting publishers. In the case of this one, if you go to LookInside in Amazon, it opens the correct book and the publisher is there on the copyright page. OCLC also agrees. Hope this makes sense.

PS: For page numbers, we trust OCLC more than we trust Amazon on that -- as long as it is noted in the notes that pages come from OCLC, it is safe to use their count when we do not have the real book to check (they count the same way as we do whereas Amazon has "full number of pages (as submitted by someone)".Annie 15:27, 11 May 2020 (EDT)

Moderator notes

Hello,

The reason it is now mandatory to write a moderator note when there are PVs (besides you) is so that they can see what had been changed. Once the update is approved, the old state is lost. So when they go to their "Changed primary verifications" or to Edit History of a book, they can look at the submission and see what had changed.

While "have this book & have verified it." is a factually correct message and lets you submit the update, it is useless for someone finding the update later :) It is a lot more useful to actually add some notes explaining what had been changed so that the submission link above explains what had been changed. This also allows this kind of updates to be approved even on books with PVs and without cluttering the PVs pages with hundreds of notifications on sometimes trivial changes. It does not replace the manual notifications completely (still required for big changes) but for things like this, that works as well - when people write notes. Hope this makes sense. :) Annie 01:10, 25 May 2020 (EDT)

I usually do review what I'm updating in the record for the moderator, & am not sure why I didn't this time. I won't fail to note all changes in the future. I always notify other PVs of any changes I submit (unless they say they don't want to be notified, or are no longer active), since that is what I was told to do. Thanks for the heads up. Mike 04:36, 25 May 2020 (EDT)
No worries and I saw your note in the next edit (and I had seen some earlier). I had seen a few people submitting with "I have this book" lately so I had been posting and trying to explain what the idea of the note is when I see it these days.
It is not only the PVs anymore - now that we have the "Edit History" on every publication, notes help reconstruct all the changed going forward in case someone approves something that should not have been approved. And people return now and then after being inactive for a long time.
Yes - the old(er) rules were to notify for anything; now you can use the Changed PV list for the clear changes (adding OCLC for example or any house keeping items like typos correction and so on) - that is why we have the special link for it so people can see them. Less work for you that way as well. :) Annie 04:53, 25 May 2020 (EDT)
Okay. I won't notify other PVs unless it is a major change, & I will detail all changes submitted in each moderator note. Thanks. Mike 09:21, 25 May 2020 (EDT)

These ISBNs

The new one here is also incorrect numerically incorrect. Are you sure that the book actually has an isbn printed on it? We may be better off leaving this poor book without an ISBN. As you did the secondary OCLC verification and OCLC differs from us, our note should be explaining the discrepancy in ISBNs. Thanks! Annie 06:54, 28 May 2020 (EDT)

I will try to get hold of a first edition to verify the ISBN (or SBN). Most copies available are book club editions, but we'll see. Mike 13:38, 29 May 2020 (EDT)
Sounds like a plan. Just add a note where the ISBN came from in the meantime and that OCLC has a different one? Annie 13:45, 29 May 2020 (EDT)
I have ordered a book club edition. I hope it is the US edition, & retains the ISBN. I'd prefer to wait to alter the record until the book arrives. Mike 06:14, 31 May 2020 (EDT)
No worries. I would still prefer a note saying where the ISBN is coming from but it can wait. If that plan does not work, when the libraries here reopen fully (one hopes) I will try to get an ILL on this book (OCLC is down (alternating between down and erroring on all searches) at the moment so cannot see if any of the usual libraries have it). Annie 06:20, 31 May 2020 (EDT)
I have updated the entry to reflect the conflict over the ISBN number. I got the book club edition of the book, & it deleted the ISBN number from copyright data. I agree w/ your plan to request the book on ILL when libraries open back up. Thank you for your due diligence on the matter. I'm glad to get the book anyway, as it is interesting. Haining was a great editor. Mike 12:05, 10 June 2020 (EDT)
I got hold of a library copy of the first edition. The SBN on the copyright page is as follows: 8138-1365-0. The system flagged that as numerically incorrect, but that is what is on the book. I will update the page accordingly. Thank you for your help. Doesn't May seem like a lifetime ago? Mike 11:25, 9 November 2020 (EST)
Add a 0 before the SBN when adding it - that is the standard old SBN9 format, converting to ISBN10 is made by adding a 0 in front of the 9-digits SBN. :) And add a note explaining what is printed in the book exactly. Annie 15:36, 9 November 2020 (EST)
Thank you for your suggestion. I cancelled the previous submission & resubmitted it as instructed. Hope this works. Mike 18:23, 9 November 2020 (EST)

Being There

I accepted your edition of Being There, but made a couple of changes:

  • Wikipedia images are not supported. You can either upload your own scan or copy their image and upload here (but be sure to give proper credit for the source).
  • I converted it to a chapbook based on your statement that the text is a novella.

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:29, 26 June 2020 (EDT)

This book was nominated on the final ballot for best novella by the SFWA for Nebula Awards covering 1971. Can this be indicated somewhere in the updated entry on this book? Thanks.

Mike 17:58, 26 June 2020 (EDT)

It already is: in the novella record. As it is a novella published on its own, now it has two records - the chapbook one (which will not show the awards and series if any) and the novella itself that will. Annie 18:08, 26 June 2020 (EDT)

Universal Horrors: The Studio’s Classic Films, 1931-1946

Thanks for submitting the first edition of Universal Horrors: The Studio’s Classic Films, 1931-1946 and sorry about the delay in processing. I have approved the submission and made the following changes:

  • Removed the trailing period from the title. Periods are commonly added to OCLC records, but the ISFDB doesn't do that.
  • Changed the publisher name from "McFarland" to "McFarland & Company", the name currently used by the ISFDB.
  • Moved the words "Critical discussion of Universal horror/suspense films by year, 1931 to 1946." from the Publication Note field to the Synopsis field of the Title record.
  • Moved the words "Revised in 2017" from the Publication Note field to the Title Note field since they apply to all editions/printings of this book as opposed to the 1990 edition.
  • Clarified that the price is not stated in the publication.
  • Merged the newly created Title record with the Title record associated with the second (2007) edition so that both publication records now appear under the same title record.

Could you please confirm that you meant to type "Revised in 2017" as opposed to "Revised in 2007"? Also, are you familiar with the "Clone" feature (see Help:Screen:ClonePub) of the ISFDB software? It makes it significantly easier to create additional editions of books that are already in the database and eliminates the need to merge duplicate titles after approval. Thanks for editing!

P.S. Also, an FYI in case you are not aware of the policy change made back in May when we clarified the scope of the project as it relates to books about speculative fiction. The Rules of Acquisition which define what is included were narrowed down to "[Included:] Published non-fiction works about speculative fiction which can be plausibly linked to published (as defined above) speculative fiction... Thus a book about "Star Trek physics" can be included (because it applies to all types of media including novels) while a book about Star Trek movie outtakes and bloopers should be excluded." Universal Horrors: The Studio’s Classic Films, 1931-1946 is included because so many of them were based on classic horror novels, but a book about horror films without a connection to written speculative fiction would not be eligible anymore. Just thought I'd mention it in case you were not aware of the policy change. Ahasuerus 20:39, 27 July 2020 (EDT)

Thank you for your careful attention to this submission. To address things you noted, I will add this: Everything I found online referenced the 2017 paperback edition of this book. That is why I used this date. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hifrommike65 (talkcontribs) .
I am looking at Amazon, the Library of Congress and OCLC records and it would appear that the hardcover version of the second edition (ISBN 9780786429745) was released in 2007 -- see this Amazon record and this LCCN record. The LCCN record says:
  • Edition: 2nd ed.
  • Published/Created: Jefferson, N.C. : McFarland & Co., c2007.
  • Notes: Rev. ed. of: Universal horrors / Michael Brunas. c1990.
The paperback version of the second edition (9781476672953), which we currently do not have on file, was apparently released in 2017 -- see this Amazon record. Ahasuerus 08:49, 28 July 2020 (EDT)
I have used the clone feature recently, but didn't think to do it on this title. I have been criticized by moderators for using the clone feature, & told that a different edition constitutes a different book. However, I have gotten conflicting directions from moderators at times. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hifrommike65 (talkcontribs) .
It really depends on the nature of the differences between editions. For example, consider Ahistory: An Unauthorized History of the Doctor Who Universe, which is now in its fourth edition. The first edition contained 336 pages. The second edition contained 400 pages. The third edition contained 784 (!) pages. The fourth edition was published in 3 volumes, which, in toto, contained approximately 1,400 (!) pages.
Clearly the changes from edition to edition were so major that each edition was effectively a different "text" and merited a separate title record. We now have then organized as 6 title records in a title series (as opposed to a "publication series", which a different can of worms.) We also made sure to enter the edition numbers as parts of their respective titles in order to emphasize that each edition contained significantly different material even though their titles looked similar.
In other cases the differences between editions are relatively minor, so they fall under the same title record. In this case the page counts of the 1990 edition and the 2007 edition are very close. Of course, page counts are not necessarily dispositive, but they are often the only indication of the extent of the changes that we have ready access to. Ahasuerus 09:08, 28 July 2020 (EDT)
Did you inform editors of the policy change in May? I didn't hear of it. Thanks for letting me know. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hifrommike65 (talkcontribs) .
Sure thing! Policy and data entry rules changes are formally proposed and discussed on the Rules and standards discussions page. In this case the discussion can be found here. Once a new consensus has been reached, the affected Help and Policy pages are updated. The change is also recorded in the Rules and standards changelog -- see the "2020-05-06" row which says "Inclusion of non-fiction works about speculative fiction" in the second column. Ahasuerus 08:33, 28 July 2020 (EDT)
I believe this book falls under the new policy, as it covers films that are regarded as adaptations of science fiction books, including Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (films profiled: Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, The Ghost of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein), and H. G. Wells's The Invisible Man (films profiled: The Invisible Man, The Invisible Man Returns, The Invisible Woman, Invisible Agent, The Invisible Man's Revenge). As the sequels suggest, Universal Studios did a remarkable job teasing out the implications of the original story. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hifrommike65 (talkcontribs) .
Oh sure. At one point I was a big fan of the classic Universal Studio horror films, so I am intimately familiar with them :-) Ahasuerus 08:33, 28 July 2020 (EDT)

Ghost Story

Looking at the edit history of Ghost Story, this was changed to add "Third printing by number line" several years ago. This was done after you verified it. We now have a new first printing record. Please check which one you have and if you do have the first printing, please unverify the third printing and verify the first printing. Sorry about this. The moderator who approved the change several years ago should have caught it, but didn't. I noticed when handling the recent clean up of the date. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:04, 8 August 2020 (EDT)

A Life in the Day - Frank Robinson

Could you check this book which has totally the wrong cover art credit. It's actually by Paul Lehr. "David Perry is cited by as creating the illustrations but yhere are no illustrations in the book so suspect they were cut." - comment by Joachim Boaz to me via Twitter. --Mavmaramis 10:38, 9 August 2020 (EDT)

What is your verification of Lehr as cover artist? I cannot make a request to change the record without that. Thanks for letting me know. Mike 02:10, 10 August 2020 (EDT)
Thanks for your reply. Joachim Boaz adds "it's an error on the publisher's part. They should not have listed Perry as the illustrator. He, to the best of my knowledge, ONLY created interior art." I've contacted Joachim to determine where the Lehr attribution has been derived from. Sorry I'm only the messanger as some of my contacts on Twitter have become aware I am a contributor to ISFDB. --Mavmaramis 09:02, 11 August 2020 (EDT)

Hello Mike. Wanted to let you know that you entered a URL in the external ID field for the Belgian National Library (KBR), so obviously not intended for Kirkus :). I've moved the URL to the web link multi-field. Regards, MagicUnk 15:30, 21 September 2020 (EDT)

The Left Hand of the Electron

Hi Mike, I've accepted your submission, but made the following changes:

  • ISBN: you entered a 9-digit SBN. To convert that to a 10-digit ISBN, prepend a '0' to the SBN (see here). I've done that for you, and clarified in the notes.
  • The LCCN number is for the 1972 Doubleday first edition, not for the 1975 White Lion edition. I've therefore moved that LCCN to the notes.

The result is here.
Also, do consider uploading a scan of the actual book - chances are it's going to be better quality than the amazon one, no? ;). Thanks, MagicUnk 14:58, 21 October 2020 (EDT)

Philip José Farmer: Good-Natured Ground Breaker

I'm holding this submission. Your pub notes state "This is the second edition (stated on cover: 2nd Revised Edition)". That would seem to be the same this record already in the database. Am I missing something? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:38, 31 October 2020 (EDT)

Not sure how I missed this. I have cancelled my submission. Thanks for your help. Mike 11:22, 9 November 2020 (EST)

A Few Last Words

Regarding this edit: When basing data on a secondary source, the source should be listed in the pub notes, not the moderator notes. I accepted the edit and added the source to the pub notes. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:18, 31 October 2020 (EDT)

In His Own Image

When making a significant change to a primary verified publication (especially when you don't have the book), you need to check with the primary verifier. While the ISFDB has its fair share of errors, it also happens that secondary sources have errors as well. For this submission, I have notified Mavmaramis and will process it once he responds. The Lurking Fear and Other Stories

To solve the wrong title used in this collection, I imported the correct title and removed the wrong title.

  • The import was done by using the "Import Content" option on the left menu of the pub record. Then using Option 2 and entering the URL of the correct title record.
  • The remove was done by using the "Remove Titles From This Pub" option on the left menu of the pub record. Then selecting the record to remove.

Hope that helps if you run across this case again. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:03, 11 January 2021 (EST)

The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre

Regarding this submission: What data is coming from Locus? For a verified pub, if a secondary source is used, the note should spell out the specific data. Let me know and I will approve & update the record. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:06, 11 January 2021 (EST)

The statement about Locus was there before I submitted an update to this record. I believe it referred to the date. Everything after that statement I have added in this update. Mike 18:28, 11 January 2021 (EST)
I accepted the submission and edited the second source statement. All pubs entered from secondary sources should have a statement like that (older ones will not, but we're trying to get better). When you verify a pub containing such a statement, please remove the statement if all the data is available from the pub or edit it to state what data that is not from the pub is from the secondary source. The goal is to show what data came from the pub and what data came from a secondary source. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:33, 12 January 2021 (EST)
My recollection is that the date went to the day of release. That wasn't available in the book, which just gave the year & month. Locus will list day of release when nothing else does. Next time I will remove the secondary source statements in pub notes, as per your request. Mike 20:34, 12 January 2021 (EST)

The Complete Orsinia: Malafrena / Stories and Songs

In The Complete Orsinia: Malafrena / Stories and Songs, the poems "Folk Song from the Montayna Province" (page 351) and "Red Berries (Montayna Province)" (page 352) are both listed twice. Is this intended (there are two versions of each) or a database error? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:25, 15 February 2021 (EST)

The poems are listed twice, & one listing should be deleted for each of them. I'm not sure how this happened, but it was in error. Thanks for catching it. Mike 13:58, 15 February 2021 (EST)
The extras have been removed. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:07, 15 February 2021 (EST)

Down Here in the Dream Quarter

Hello,

Adding external IDs does not require to notify the verifiers (the notes are enough - as these are secondary sources always, they can never be in the book (except in some special cases - LCCN for example)) but adding a publication series based on secondary sources does :) So can you consult with the active PV (Markwood) here and then as the info comes from OCLC, unless he confirms it is inside of the book as well, we need a note also to be added crediting the Pub series to OCLC. If there were no active PVs, I would have approved, added the note with the credit to OCLC then stopped by to remind you to add notes in such cases. :) Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Annie 23:29, 11 March 2021 (EST)

The book in question has a cover scan here that shows "Doubleday Science Fiction" on the front dust cover, and on the dust cover spine. The other place the designation was placed is the hardcover spine. The designation does not appear on any page of the book. However, library catalogs picked up the series designation, and I recall seeing it noted in Book Review Digest and other bibliographies. Doubleday had several specialized series, such as Crime Club, Doubleday Books for Young Readers, a western series (Double D Westerns), and even a romance series for awhile. The company also had book clubs targeting these readerships, and sold the series books to libraries on a subscription basis. I have checked the books we pick up as "Doubleday Science Fiction" as a publication series, and my sense is that our listing is not complete. I will check with Mark Wood, but this is kind of a hornet's nest. Mike 06:33, 12 March 2021 (EST)
I don’t disagree. :) But our etiquette is to respect the PVs and check with them when we change major parts of the records they had checked against a real book. I am almost sure that he will be fine with it but almost sure is not the same as sure. :) Annie 08:16, 12 March 2021 (EST)
I have run it past him, and referenced this exchange. If nothing else, I got all my Doubleday Science Fiction books out & looked them over again. I had a friend (no longer with us) who did royalties for Doubleday for over 20 years, and he gave me some insight into how the inner workings of that publisher operated. I am not sure "publication series" quite does justice to the line of books issued as "Doubleday Science Fiction," but it may be the closest we can get on this website's framework. It was a brilliant marketing strategy that also worked against writers at times. Zelazny found some of his books were pulped before publication since they sold as many to libraries as they could, and if they couldn't turn them into book club editions, they didn't need them anymore. He reportedly got a call from his editor telling him if he wanted personal copies he had to buy them immediately, as they would not exist for long right at the point of publication. Mike 09:01, 12 March 2021 (EST)
And approved! :) Have fun with these - if you need any assistance, let me know :) Annie 11:51, 12 March 2021 (EST)

Not So Good a Gay Man

Hi, about Not So Good a Gay Man You state 'I did not list Komorski for cover art since it was a period photo that a cover designer (unnamed) used.' But we do not credit cover designers, we credit artists. If a cover designer uses an old painting by e.g. Rembrandt, we credit Rembrandt, not the cover designer. You can name a cover designer in the notes, if a name for the cover designer is given at all.--Dirk P Broer 19:36, 14 March 2021 (EDT)

Based on this response, I have submitted the photographer as cover artist. Thanks for your help. Mike 00:50, 15 March 2021 (EDT)

Elric at the End of Time

Hello Mike,

Can you check again that Clute/Nicholls's record is indeed for the SECOND impression and not the first for this one (so this book)? If not, you will need to move your secondary verification over to the first:) Also - I rejected a couple of OCLCs (including here) - unless the OCLC specifically specifies that they are for a later printing or has an year that identifies that, we do not add them to the second/third and so on printings with the same ISBNs. You can add them on the first printings instead. If you want to add them to these, you can add them in the notes with the OCLC template and a note that this appears to be for the first printing. And yes -- OCLC does have records for later printings often :)

If you have any questions, please let me know. Annie 13:38, 15 March 2021 (EDT)

This is the record for the Elric book on the Science Fiction Encyclopedia 3 site:

Elric at the End of Time (London: New English Library, 1984) [coll of linked stories: from various magazines: Elric of Melniboné: illus/hb/Rodney Matthews]

We do not show any edition with Rodney Matthews as cover illustrator. Unless there is an error on SFE3 (which has happened), I would say it is not possible to identify either edition without the actual book available, so I suggest dropping the OCLC designation for the time being. Thanks for your sharp eye. Mike 14:46, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
If OCLC number matches the description, dates and so on of the first, we add to the first as a basic rule - OCLC tends to write it when they have a later one. We can add "OCLC does not specify printing/edition" to make sure we document - but that's about it. If we are missing an edition, feel free to add it (even if it is a stub with illustrator only although a publisher will ne nice). :)
The SFE3 sounds like the first as well - no designation, no data discrepancy so assumed first (with a note on the assumption)? Annie 14:54, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
You rejected my edit of Five Victorian Ghost Novels. The 1971 edition we list has information in the record about the 2012 reprint, which is confusing. Amazon picks up that edition with scans inside it in its "look inside" feature. I have the 2nd printing ($.4.95). It is undated, but the LCCN indicates later 70s. I bought it at a bookstore that kept all its older Dover editions in 1983. Given the conflicts in the OCLC record, I suggest leaving the records as they are unless you agree that the 1971 edition should not list info about the 2012 edition. Mike 15:02, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
Sorry, nothing personal - just the wrong edition :) Then we need to fix our 1971 edition if they got mixed up. Up for it? A 1971 book should not have any 2012 info - it may use it to "assume something" and as a source but it should be the 1971 data (we can mention that we use a newer printing and what we are getting from it if we do not have the first handy -- but it should be clear what comes from where)... so if you are sure, feel free to move it/create new editions to park it and so on... :) Annie 15:10, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
Thank you, will do. Mike 15:14, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
Anytime. And I meant "newer printing" above of course - now fixed (as in - use the 2012 data to populate 1971 book). As long as we document sources, we are golden. But if we have a 1971 book with data that cannot be from 1971 without making it clear why we use it for this book, we have a problem. :) Annie 15:20, 15 March 2021 (EDT)

Terminal Atrocity Zone: Ballard

You knew someone is coming for this one :)

What is printed on the title page exactly and how many of the essays are not by him/how much of the book is not his? Annie 16:02, 15 March 2021 (EDT)

It might be easier if I do a listing of contents for the item on ISFDB. Will submit it. Mike 17:35, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
That would be lovely :) Plus we can use them anyway so... Thanks, Mike! :) Annie 17:38, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
Submitted. Mike 18:19, 15 March 2021 (EDT)
Appoved with one change (when something is not credited we use uncredited and not "no Author". For anything that was dated differently from the book, we need a note in the title record where the date is coming from. Also - please note that a copyright date is irrelevant if something was not printed :) Also "Foreword to "The Atrocity Exhibition"" for example will be dated with the date of THIS book even if it was printed earlier unless it was printed with the exact same title "Foreword to "The Atrocity Exhibition"" so we can merge it there - variants are dated based on their first appearance as such as not to their parents. And Coitus 80 may have been copyrighted in 1969 but was not published until Jan 1970 so it gets that date. :)
Let me know if you have any questions. :) Annie 18:30, 15 March 2021 (EDT)

The Mammoth Book of Steampunk

The source for the artist credit goes in the regular notes :) I added it here. Also: as it is based on secondary sources, using the Canonical name of the author as you did was indeed the correct thing to do. :) Annie 12:16, 17 March 2021 (EDT)

Neighboring Lives

Amazon dates for books from before the beginning of the century can be very unreliable - some were added from vendors, some are just invented. So for anything pre-2000, I would not use Amazon on its own to date (they don't even have the correct year quite often). We also support 16 different Amazons, each having its own data. So when you mean the US site, use Amazon.com and not just Amazon :) I pulled the date from here and added a note. Let me now if you have any questions/concerns. Annie 12:22, 17 March 2021 (EDT)

The Final War

Hi Mike,

Well, the "Cloning this edition from three sources: OCLC, Library of Congress, and Amazon.com.uk. There are minor discrepancies among all three sources, so I have gone with what two of the sources agree on." is all great but then you did not list a single source in the actual notes here. Especially when there are discrepancy, listing what you used is useful (I assume the two external IDs show that but as more IDs can be added, down the road, it won't be clear where the original data came from... :) So do you want to list the two you used in the notes?- unless you are PVing, "Data from XXX" should always be in the notes. Thanks for adding it! Annie 01:19, 18 March 2021 (EDT)

I have submitted another edit for this page, including all data and sources in the pub note & note to moderator. I also caught a couple more things. Hope this works. Thanks for your help. Mike 01:54, 18 March 2021 (EDT)

The Uncommercial Traveller

The erroneous ISBN was my error. Thanks for catching it. Mike 00:05, 22 March 2021 (EDT)

Ace Double D-249

Hi, I noticed that the title on the spine of Sargasso of Space/The Cosmic Puppets says "Sagasso" instead of "Sargasso", so I stuck it into the notes. I assume your copy is the same, and I thought you might be interested. Jack Sjmathis 17:46, 24 March 2021 (EDT)

Yes, the error was mentioned by James A. Corrick in his invaluable book about the Ace Doubles publication series, "Double Your Pleasure" http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?829944 on page 24 of the March 1989 edition. The word is not misspelled anywhere else it appears in the book. I have collected the 1950s Ace books by Philip K. Dick, not to read but to have. (Reading them would cause the books to disintegrate. I have a 2003 Vintage edition of The Cosmic Puppets, but do not have another edition of Sargasso of Space. Due to your heads up, I will look for one.) Cheers. Mike 17:56, 24 March 2021 (EDT)

The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, July/August 2020

I approved your addition (see here), but made some changes to match ISFDB standards:

  • Title: I changed the title from "The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (July/August 2020)" to "The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, July/August 2020". We use "&" as that is what the magazine uses (at least it did in the past and the cover still does; if the masthead changed, please let me know). For the date, we separate it with a comma and not parenthesis.
  • Reviews: Reviews are entered as just the name of the book (so "Network Effect" and not "Network Effect (2020)"). When the titles entered match an existing record in the database, the software will automatically link them. I have updated the titles and will manually link them. A couple of comments on specific ones:
    • Providence: You gave the author as "Max Berry", but it is actually "Max Barry". If this was a database typo, it's been corrected. If it's a typo in the pub, we use the correct author name and then add a pub note explaining the pub had a typo.
    • The Oracle Code: As this is a graphic novel and by an author below the threshold, we enter it as an essay and not a review. Reviews are only used for books that would be eligible for the database.

All in all, you did a good job entering this. Magazines are one of the harder items. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:53, 24 March 2021 (EDT)

Thank you for your help. I'm glad I didn't completely blow it. "Max Barry" was my bad. I tried to double check everything, but I missed that. Charles de Lint listed The Oracle Code as "tpb" (trade paperback). This info will help me index other magazines not yet covered. Mike 19:57, 24 March 2021 (EDT)

Oracle of the Thousand Hands

For Oracle of the Thousand Hands, since you changed the credit to Barry N. Malzberg, is the current cover correct? It does not have the initial and I see it was previously uploaded by a different user. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:16, 28 March 2021 (EDT)

I cannot tell you, because the library copy I had did not have a cover. But the spine of the book, the title page, and the copyright page all had the middle initial. Mike 09:03, 28 March 2021 (EDT)
I added a pub note to address the discrepancy. Don't want someone to try changing it latter based on the cover. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:08, 28 March 2021 (EDT)

Regarding this submission: The entered at is 1995-11-19, but the source link has 1995-11-27. Was this a typo in the submission or is something else going on? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:55, 10 April 2021 (EDT)

I double checked. The date of publication is November 27, 1995. The other date came up in a subject line search, but it might have been when the story was uploaded to the magazine's website. Do you want to handle it, or should I resubmit? Thanks for your help. Mike 13:52, 10 April 2021 (EDT)
I approved it and fixed the date. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:09, 10 April 2021 (EDT)

Octavia E. Butler: Kindred, Fledgling, Collected Stories

I had to reject this submission as there were two issues:

  • Reviews belong in the publication where the review was printed, not in the work reviewed. When editing a publication, only content in that publication should be listed.
  • When entering a review in the appropriate publication, only enter it in the review section.

We typically do not create newspaper publications for reviews alone, but it is not unknown. Hope this makes sense. Let me know if any questions. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:24, 11 April 2021 (EDT)

I'm not sure what your reference to newspaper publications refers to. The New Yorker is a magazine. Mike 12:28, 11 April 2021 (EDT)

Clute/Nicholls Verification for SFE3

You appear to have marked several publications with the Clute/Nicholls verification where it appears that they do not appear in the paper editions of that book, but instead are listed in SFE3 ([1],[2],[3],[4], and [5]). I raised the question back in 2013 of whether we should use the Clute/Nicholls verification publication mentioned only in SFE3. The consensus then was that we should not. When I happened on some of your verifications this January, I again raised the question, but received no responses. I should have left a note on your talk page then, but I confess that I looked at the date the verification was made and mistook it for the last active date. I encountered another publication record today in the same situation (last one in the above list), which is why I'm looking at this again. In any case, if you're comfortable with the 2013 consensus, then you should probably remove those verifications. If you'd like to argue that a Clute/Nicholls verification should include SFE3, then you could respond to the January post and we can see if we can a discussion going. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 10:55, 18 April 2021 (EDT)

I won't submit any more edits. That should end the matter. Mike 15:03, 18 April 2021 (EDT)
I'm not certain I made myself clear. My understanding is that a Clute/Nicholls verification indicates that the publication is mentioned in one of the editions of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. That reference does refer to title and year and can refer to country when there is a separate publication. After SFE3 launched, I asked the question in the Rules and Standards forum as to whether a publication noted in SFE3 should be marked with a Clute/Nicholls verification. The consensus then was that it should not. When I discovered records that were marked with Clute/Nicholls but did not appear in the 2nd or earlier editions, but do appear in SFE3, I started a new discussion to see if we were still abiding by the 2013 consensus. Unfortunately, nobody had commented on that discussion. Myself, I'm ambivalent on whether we include SFE3 as Clute/Nicholls or not. However, whatever the community decides, we should all abide by it. Because you verified publications that appear only in SFE3, those verification should either be removed (if we still follow the 2013 consensus), or, we should try to find a new consensus that includes SFE3 under Clute/Nicholls. I certainly don't want you to stop submitting edits. It's purely a matter of whether the Clute/Nicholls verification should be marked. So, if you feel that a Clute/Nicholls should not include SFE3, we need you to remove the Clute/Nicholls verifications on the publications linked above. Alternatively, if you feel that verification should be marked for pubs in SFE3, then we need you to chime in here and hopefully we can get enough folks to participate in the discussion to decide one way or the other. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 15:39, 18 April 2021 (EDT)
Done. The items are removed. And you made yourself very clear. A small cadre of insiders decide how things will be here, and those who submit edits have no status or value. This is my last log in. Mike 08:29, 28 May 2021 (EDT)
I'm really sorry you feel that way. I can assure you that your contributions have value and are appreciated. I did invite you to join in the discussion of this issue. We operate by consensus and everyone's opinion is listened to. Anyway, I hope you reconsider and return to the project. However, as you have stated your intention not to return, I am going to fix any other records with a Clute/Nicholls verification which is only in SFE3. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 18:19, 9 June 2021 (EDT)
I'm over it. Sorry to cause you distress. I still don't understand the decision not to use SFE3, as it is a much better database than either print versions of SFE, but I will follow the will of ISFDB. Mike 06:39, 6 July 2021 (EDT)

Octavia Butler's Dawn

Hi, I'm trying to verify my 12th edition of Dawn - yours here 577862 is listed as a trade paperback and $19.99, whereas this one 9241 is listed as pb (mass market?) and $5.99. Wondering if you happen to have how tall yours is and where you got the price from? Mine doesn't have a price on back or front cover, only has a back page indicating Butler's other titles can be bought from Warner Books for $5.50USD/$6.99 CAN. Mine is 8" tall, kind of halfway between mass market and trade, unfortunately making it a bit harder to easily categorize. Thank you! Kapotun 14:35, 13 June 2021 (EDT)Kapotun

See http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?9241 for the actual 12th printing. There were complicating factors in the edition I listed (which I do not have anymore, so I've removed my verification). My copy was a print-on-demand version of the 12th edition, and in trade paper size, although the listing on Amazon said mass-market size: https://www.amazon.com/Dawn-Xenogenesis-Bk-Octavia-Butler/dp/0446603775. I hope this helps. Mike 06:25, 6 July 2021 (EDT)
The price is sometimes on the spine, at the top or the bottom, too. It will often be mashed together with the ISBN, and may not have a $ or other currency marker. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:53, 7 July 2021 (EDT)

Splitting some Burroughs publications you have verified

Some existing Burroughs publications you have PV'd have two variants that need to be split. You have verified Tarzan and the Lost Empire

Please check this poll to help determine which variant is the existing entry, and which is created. Your participation is appreciated. ../Doug H 23:35, 26 August 2021 (EDT)

Done. BTW, I am the only verifier of the 1986 Twayne study of Burroughs. See http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1004245 Mike 00:23, 27 August 2021 (EDT)
A few years ago, I'd decided to collect Burroughs paperbacks because in my youth I'd ended up with a mixture of the white and black covered Tarzan books and I wanted a consistent set. That morphed into collecting all paperback printings once I realized ISFDB cared. I ran across someone who had 'succeeded' for Ace / Ballantine and who was publishing a book, but was having trouble organizing his material. He sent several drafts and I sent revisions and suggestions (and a few missing editions). Anyway, he published and sent me a signed copy (I doubt I'd have bought one) and he's moved on to another h/c publisher. I'm getting ready to cull my collection to one of each cover rather than each printing. ../Doug H 10:12, 27 August 2021 (EDT)

I fixed title for your PV of E.F. Benson's 1986 collection The Tale of an Empty House; you wrote it as THE Empty House, which I assume was just an error, since the correctly titled short story is in the contents. --Username 14:54, 13 September 2021 (EDT)

Bradbury's Zen & the Art of Writing

Hi Mike - I've added the hardcover edition of Bradbury's Zen and the Art of Writing and The Joy of Writing: Two Essays. I noticed that you've verified a sightly different record titled Zen & the Art of Writing. The longer title matches Worldcat, Reginald3 and SFE3 (the last without the subtitle). Clute/Nicholls has a shorter title as just Zen and the Art of Writing. None of the secondary sources have the ampersand, though I do see that is how it is listed on the cover. I also noticed that your verified copy mentions that it is the second printing. Could you double check the title page of your copy and see if the title is correct with the ampersand? If it does have the ampersand, we should probably variant it to that of the first printing. If not the title should probably be changed. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 14:49, 3 October 2021 (EDT)

Editing other users' home pages

Please do not edit other people's user pages. Sometimes typos may be done on purpose (for example so a search can easily find the page) - if it bothers you, tell them about it and they may decide to fix it but do not fix it for them. Feel free to edit any typos in the DB notes but other people's user pages AND other people's Talk messages should be left alone. The rule in the wiki part of the site is that you are welcome to fix the formatting if someone mixes up the number of : they use or use (unindent) on someone else's message or split a discussion in a separate thread (or move a thread if it is in the wrong place as I did with your two) but other from that if you did not post it, you do not edit it - these are personal messages and the user page is the editor's personal page. :) Thanks for the understanding.

I undid the update you did on Marc Kupper's user page. I also moved your notifications from his user page to his Talk page where they belong. I think you just followed the link from a PVed book - which opens to the User page indeed. I had raised the question to have that changed but in the meantime - make sure you are on a Talk/discussion page when leaving a note for another editor. As usual - do not hesitate to voice any concerns and/or questions. :) Annie 03:07, 20 October 2021 (EDT)

Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders

Hello,

About the edit you submitted for this one here. Your edits would have replaced the POD entry with the non-POD one. Which will mean that we lose one record AND the verification of the first PV goes on the wrong book. Both should not be happening - we want both records if both versions exist and the PVd books should be about the versions the PV actually had. So:

  • Clone for your copy of the book
  • Move your verification to the new book.

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions. Annie 13:11, 28 January 2022 (EST)

The Rediscovery of Man: The Complete Short Science Fiction of Cordwainer Smith

When you submitted the clone, you forgot to update the changed values :) We have two options about this one:

  • You cancel your clone and make a new one where the printing and price updates are actually in the price and notes fields respectively.
  • You post here what the new price is and I approve this one and update it with the price and the printing information.

Thanks! Annie 13:14, 28 January 2022 (EST)

Ignore this one. I cannot read - I need coffee. Approved. Sorry for bugging you :) Annie 13:34, 28 January 2022 (EST)

Queen Victoria's Book of Spells

A few small changes here:

  • Dating the date statement is a good idea. A 2013 date in Amazon.com in 2022 may be suspect but the date being checked and entered in 2013 makes it contemporary so we keep the note of when we saw the date first. You can add a note that the date is the same as of 2022-01-28 if you want to but having the 2013 date in the notes will stop someone from deciding to clear the date in the date field in a few years because "old books dates in Amazon can be incorrect" or something along these lines.
  • When Locus had been the source or we later see the book listed there, the note about the book being listed is often added. I restored it here. I am not sure we will ever do something about these but losing information is never a good idea so... I tend to just transform the way I did here.

Let me know if something does not make sense and thanks for updating and verifying this one! Annie 13:41, 28 January 2022 (EST)

Opening Minds

I have your submission on hold, as your copy is actually not the 2nd printing, but a POD version of the 2nd printing (exact copy if you will), which requires its own, separate, publication record. This is becoming more frequent these days - some publishers even have PoD and non-PoD versions at the same time. See eg this example [6] vs this one [7]. You'll need to clone the 2nd printing and create a new pub record for the PoD edition. Also, both the real 2nd printing, and the POD version require additional notes to disambiguate and clarify why there are two records. I tend to clearly indicate in the notes when a pub record is for a PoD edition - something along the lines of " Note that 1st PV's copy is PoD, evidenced by barcode with code 18850548R00092, and Printed in Poland by Amazon fulfillment on last page, which is in contradiction with statement "Printed in the USA" on back cover. This means that the same master seems to be used for print on demand outside the USA, and that Printed in the USA is not necessarily correct for all copies. Since this is PoD, date and price are for when this publication first appeared. ", (needs to be tweaked to your actual book of course). Include PoD info in the notes, typically printed on last page - see here for an example. hope this is clear. Once you have submitted a clone for your PoD with the necessary info in the notes, let me know. Then you can move your PV, and I'll reject your submission to retain the original 2nd printing record. Supernatural Tales

Hi Mike -

As promised, I've approved your edits to add the two issues of Supernatural Tales. I did make a few edits after. You are correct in that we should not list page numbers for eBooks (except PDFs), but we can add the page numbers with a pipe (|) in front of them. This will prevent them from displaying, but will also sort the entries. I've done this for both issues. I also corrected the title of the magazine to conform to standards i.e. "Supernatural Tales, Winter 2020/2021" The magazine title should be followed by a comma and then the date. If we don't have a date, an issue number can be used instead. We should never have both issue number and date. I know there are lots of examples of incorrect titling of magazines and try to fix them when I see them, as I did with the earlier issues of this one. I used "2020/20201" as that is how the date is reflected in the look inside. You also could have added the title series (Supernatural Tales) with your edit. However, we group EDITOR records by year and when I merged your new title with the existing one for 2020, it picked up the series name (which is what puts it in the issue grid). Lastly, there was no need to add an Anthology title, for magazines and fanzines the title record is of type EDITOR. We do enter facsimile reprints of magazines as anthologies (e.g. here), but that isn't really what's happening with Supernatural Tales which is more of a different format. In those cases the publication type is also ANTHOLOGY. I think that's everything. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 18:27, 18 May 2022 (EDT)

R. A. Lafferty's From the Thunder Colt's Mouth

Hi, I've added a note to this title - which appears in an anthology you PVed - based on a FB discussion that says it later appeared (in modified form) as part of the novel Argo. The latter doesn't have any PVs, so it seems unlikely that we can verify that claim, although 2 different people in that FB discussion corroborated the info, so it seems likely to be the case. Let me know if you have any objections to my edit. Thanks ErsatzCulture 12:35, 9 June 2022 (EDT)

Hi, if you are around, please take a look at the above-mentioned publication: according to OCLC (and to the original texts) there also should be Wilhelm Grimm stated as author. There's also the ominous note 'Introduction to Padraic Colum' (which likely should read 'Introduction by Padraic Colum', but even better it should be part of the contents listing; the publication also does lack any other content listings. Coauthors

When adding a coauthor, each author goes on their own line - the "and" you see on publications is generated by the system. Fixed it here. I also moved the pub under the correct title variant :) Annie (talk) 12:16, 26 September 2022 (EDT)

Dick ~ Brackett / Solar Lottery ~ The Big Jump

Posted on the talk pages of active PVs: Chavey, Rtrace, Hifrommike65
I am editing and PVing Solar Lottery ~ The Big Jump and propose to change the date from 1955-00-00 to 1955-05-00 and add a pub note stating the source: Galactic Central Bibliography. I will also add the month to the associated records (title and coverart). I will be adding the month to several other PKD books in the near future. Teallach (talk) 18:39, 26 October 2022 (EDT)

Thank you for your interest in the date. May is the correct month of issue, as confirmed by James A. Corrick, Double Your Pleasure: The Ace SF Double (Gryphon, 1989). Also from this source: D-150 is March 1956, D-193 is December 1956, D-249 is October 1957, D-421 is February 1960, D-457 is September 1960, G-602 is November 1966, 15697 is September 1972. Mike (talk) 21:57, 26 October 2022 (EDT)
Thanks for the info about those months for 7 other PKD books from Corrick. I have checked these against the Galactic Central Bibliography and they all agree. Actually, the GCB lists Corrick among it sources so that's probably where it got the months from. If so, it's not surprising that they agree. I will update the ISFDb records with those months in due course. Teallach (talk) 16:11, 27 October 2022 (EDT)

Hogfoot...

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?17158; I replaced Amazon cover with SFE. It's better-framed and brighter. --Username (talk) 17:20, 27 October 2022 (EDT)

F&SF 24

https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?35717; I added Archive.org link, title has & not and, comma should be a colon, and it's "The" 24th Series, so if your copy agrees those will need to be fixed in the book and cover art titles; the HC also had the wrong title entered here which I've fixed, and there's no "The", just 24th Series, so after these edits are all done your title will need to be made a variant. --Username (talk) 11:04, 22 November 2022 (EST)

I have submitted an edit as you suggested, and added a couple of other things to the pub note for this edition. Mike (talk) 20:25, 24 November 2022 (EST)

The Ghouls

Would you mind double checking The Ghouls? I was going to add a link to the Internet Archive scan, but there are a couple of differences:

  • p154, Is this "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Edward Connell as listed in database or "Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell?
  • p213, Is the credit William F. Harvey as listed in database or W. F. Harvey?

Please let me know and I will make the appropriate updates or clone a new edition. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:27, 23 November 2022 (EST)

I have checked my book club copy. Page 154 reads "Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. Page 213 reads W. F. Harvey. The gutter code in my copy reads 22 M, not 12 M, so perhaps it's a reprint. Thanks for double-checking on this book. Annie and I worked at length to get the data on this edition correct. Mike (talk) 20:36, 24 November 2022 (EST)
I updated the pub to correct those two titles. I also added the Internet Archive scan link and updated the notes to reflect the two gutter codes. Thanks for checking. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:43, 24 November 2022 (EST)

The Year's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror: 2013

I'm holding a submission that would add "Edition" to the title of your verified The Year's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror: 2013. Based on the Internet Archive scan, Edition does appear on the title page. Would you please check yours to confirm? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:28, 26 November 2022 (EST)

I have checked my print edition. The title page reads: The Year's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror: 2013 Edition. "Edition" does not appear on the cover or on the copyright page noting title. The artist credit should also be altered to read "Edition." Thank you for catching this. Mike (talk) 22:13, 26 November 2022 (EST)

Changing contents of collection, "The Eye of the Lens"

Changing contents of collection, "The Eye of the Lens" [8]; disambiguating short story "The Eye of the Lens" from novelette "The Eye of the Lens" which is a concatenation of the three short stories, "The Hall of Machines", "The Coming of the Sun", and "The Eye of the Lens".
