The Witch Queen of Mongo

I approved you changes to The Witch Queen of Mongo, it seems pretty clear that giving the the author's name as "Carston" was an error. However, did it actually appear in that incorrect form on the book's title page? if it did, we want to record that fact.

Secondly, please do not put multiple numbers into the ISBN/Catalog number field. If there is a valid ISBN, please enter that only, and describe any other catalog numbers present (DAW books sometimes have three different ones) in the notes. If there is no ISBN, please place the most important catalog number in this field, with a # in front, to let the software know that it isn't an ISBN. Record any other catalog numbers in the notes, please.

There are several issues or questions with this anthology:

• This anthology includes a story "On the Nature of Time" by Bill Pronzini. However, our existing record for what seems to be the same story credits both Pronzini and Barry N. Malzberg. Is Malzberg credited in the anthology, even on the copyright page? Does the book mention (on the copyright page or anywhere) the previous publication of this story? was it published in Amazing Stories, particularly in the September 1981 issue? -Malzberg is the editor of the anthology, but only Pronzini is credited as author of this story. It is copyright 1981 to Ultimate Publications, Inc. first published in Amazing Stories in September 1981. Gloinson 01:30, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

• This anthology includes a story "Time Trap" by Charles Harness. Are you quite sure that the author was credited that way, and not by his more usual name of Charles L. Harness?

• This anthology includes a story "Timetipping" by Jack M. Dann, which is dated 1948. In 1948 the author would have been only 3 years old, and the story (which i have read) refers to events of the late 1960s. Thus this date must be in error. Does the anthology actually list this incorrect date? If so we will want to note the fact, But i am merging the record for it into the existing record for "Timetipping". Also, please confirm that the author was credited as "Jack M. Dann", rather than his more common name of "Jack Dann". -DES ^Talk 00:03, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Norton's Forerunner: The Second Venture

I've placed on hold your submission for a new pub of this title. It appears to be almost identical to a previously entered record. The only difference I can see is the month of publication. The current record (verified by Ahasuerus) dates it as June 1986. Your submission gives it May 1986. Can you double-check your copy? I've notified the verifier of the current record to check as well. Robots and Empire

You submitted a new pub of Robots and Empire with date 1986-11-00; price $4.50, and note "Stated 1st U.S. printing of Del Rey edition". This looks like a duplicate of this verified pub although your edit includes some data that the existign record ommits. I have the submission on hold for the moment. I would suggest that you add the missing data to the existign record, and drop the verifier a note that you have doen so (I think this verifier is not active at the moment).

Also, if the first printing was in Nov 1986, is this unverified pub which gives a lower price an a july 86 date, an error? The Locus index shows "Robots and Empire (Ballantine Del Rey 0-345-33769-7, Jul ’86, $3.95, 468pp, pb)" so it looks as if a 1986 printing could not be the first Ballantine / Del Rey printing, even if it says that it is. -DES ^Talk 03:21, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Weird Tales, September 1942

Weird Tales, September 1942 approved with a few minor changes:

1. Changed "Never the Twain..." to "Never the Twain . . ." as per Help:Screen:NewNovel:
   • An ellipsis should be entered as the sequence "space", "period", "space", "period", "space", "period". [we are still converting old titles to this format, so this is a common issue]
2. Changed all dates from 1942-00-00 to 1942-09-00.

Also, "Herbert West: Reanimator: III. Six Shots by Moonlight" is a bit irregular. Normally, we would enter it as "Herbert West: Reanimator (Part 1 of 3)" so that it would be automatically linked to the novella version. However, I assume that this is how it appears in the magazine, so I guess we'll just let it be for now. Our Serials implementation is due for a revamp anyway... I Sing the Body Electric!

I have approved the addition of the 4th printing of I Sing the Body Electric!, but keep in mind that it's easier to use Cloning when dealing with Collections. If a pre-existing publication has its contents listed, then, when you Clone it, all of its contents is copied over and you don't have to enter it separately.

Now that we have a "shell" Collection publication, we can use another way to populate it with its Contents data, namely by using the Import option. Go to the 4th printing that you have added, select Import Content in the navbar on the left and enter the ID (either the tag or the number) of another edition which includes contents. In this case, we can use another another Bantam printing for simplicity's sake, e.g. http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?SNGTHBDLCT1976 . Everything to the right of the question mark in the URL is the tag, so simply cut and paste it into the form and hit "Import Content". Reel Stuff

I reviewed the proposed changes to Reel Stuff and implemented them differently. As Help:Screen:EditPub#General_contents points out:

When you are viewing or editing an ISFDB publication record, the data in the upper part of the page is from the publication record and the data in the Contents section is composed from ISFDB title records. ISFDB has one big "gotcha" in that if you make changes to anything in the Contents section -- other than the page numbers -- you will be updating the original title record which can be referenced from multiple publications. Thus, ISFDB editors should keep in mind the following points:

1. The Page field for each title listed belongs with the publication record and can be edited without affecting other publications or author bibliographic displays.
2. The data for the remaining Content fields (Title, Date, Entry Type, Length, and Author) is stored in ISFDB title records. If you make any changes to these fields please be aware that these changes will be affecting all publications that reference these titles and you will also be affecting what’s displayed in the author bibliographic displays.

A general rule of thumb is that if you need to make a change to a title or author name, no matter how minor, then you should use the [Add Title] button and set up the new title record which matches what's in your publication. You can then remove the old/incorrect title record using the “Remove Titles From This Pub” option which is available from the publication display screen.

If you need to change an attribute which is about the title, such as the Date, Entry Type, and/or Length fields then you normally make the changes without going through the add-title/remove-title route. However, please be aware that your changes will be visible in all publications and author bibliographies which reference the title.

We also have a separate page at Help:How to change a story in a collection which describes the same concepts in greater detail and gives step by step instructions on how to make Contents changes. If you have any questions, please post them either here or on the Help Desk and we can discuss them further. Lou, you verified The Doom That Came to Sarnath and Other Stories and have the story Imprisoned with the Pharaohs written by H. P. Lovecraft and Harry Houdini.

Could you please take a look at how this is credited in the publication? The story was ghost written by H. P. Lovecraft for Harry Houdini and first published under Houdini's byline. Find The Changeling

Have a question for you about your verified pub FNDTHCHNGL1980. I have what appears to be an identical copy, stated first printing - November 1980, but the cover price is $2.75. (The pub record has $2.50). Dell was very good for stating printings, so I'm left with a couple of options/explanations: the price in the pub record is wrong (can you please check that) or this is a printed in the US edition but printed for the Canadian market (in which case I will enter it as a separate pub). Conan The Guardian--Differences?

Also the Tor catalog/price/ logo chain on the right under the far edge of last n in Conan. Problem though is my copy has Roland Green with no middle initial anywhere. The cover is your option, but the name should have the J. deleted from the verification. They stress the name 'as used' in the book. Tarzan and the Madman cover artist credit?

Hi. As part of consolidating some Richard Powers and Dick Powers cover credits (see [9] and [10]), we discovered the use of "Dick Powers" was with one exception limited exclusively to various Ballantine Tarzan reprints. There are a couple of Tarzan titles crediting "Richard Powers" instead, including your verified Tarzan and the Madman from 1975. I've concurrently pestered Dcarson about the 1974 printing of that title and another one.... 1975's later than the mid-60s editions crediting "Dick Powers", but would you mind humoring my curiosity and checking the artist credit on that if you have it handy? Robert E. Howard's "Fragment"

Your verified pub Worms of the Earth lists Robert E. Howard's poem "Fragment", however I believe that it should actually be a short story with the same title. The story in Bran Mak Morn (which I've been adding begins "A gray sky arched over the dreary waste" whereas the poem titled "Fragment" begins "And so his boyhood wandered into youth" (from Always Comes Evening). I merged "On the Nature of Time" in your verified The Best Time Travel Stories of All Time with the title credited to both Pronzini and Malzberg, based on the credit in the Locus listing. --MartyD 10:34, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

I made some further changes as well, based on the Locus info:

• Changed the pub date to 2004-03-00 from 2003-12-00, from Locus entry. As corroboration, Amazon lists 2004-02-24, which is likely an announced date.
• Added an Introduction by Malzberg on vii, from that introduction in the 2003-02-00 tp edition
• Changed "3 Rms Good Vue" to "3 Rms, Good View", based on the Locus contents for the 2003-02-00 tp edition and a couple of other appearances of the latter title vs. none for the former

I added notes about all of the above to the pub record. I also added a note that this edition drops the 16-page graphical adaptation of "A Sound of Thunder" present in the 2003-02-00 tp edition (from Locus' notes; also looks like this is confirmed by the change in the cover, which on the tp edition touted that and on this one makes no mention of it).

I'd also like to change the type of "Ex Oblivione". It is currently listed as a short story. However, the note in the front of the section in The Doom That Came To Sarnath that contains "Ex Oblivione" describes it as a "prose poem". It is also contained in Magazine of Horror, November 1968 in a section titled "Four Prose-Poems" (see this discussion of another Lovecraft prose poem). I am proposing that we change "Ex Oblivione" from a short story to a poem. Other examples of prose poetry that I am aware of are entered this way. The Tomb and Other Tales

I'm swapping out three stories in your verified pub The Tomb and Other Tales replacing them with the variant of the title as it appears in other Ballantine or Del Rey printings of the collection (I've got the 3rd and the 19th printings). "Imprisoned with the Pharaohs" should be credited to Lovecraft and Houdini. "In the Walls of Eryx" and "Poetry and the Gods" should be credited to Lovecraft alone.
