Event Horizon (online)

I'm looking to add all the information for the short lived webzine produced by Ellen Datlow and Rob Killheffer in the late 1990s. I just tried to add Cadigan's novella with the long title beginning "The Final Remake..." and I'm not sure I've got how to connect it to the overall publication series, so I'm going to wait for a moderator to let me know what I've done wrong. -- Gengelcox 21:08, 4 February 2020 (EST)

Hi. I think you're referring to a different submission, but I just handled the one for the September issue and had a minor comment. The submission was fine, but for magazines we use a Title Series, not a Publication Series. So I moved that. Then I saw we already have a couple of other issues and have combined them under a single 1998 title record, so I merged it into that as well. Thanks, Marty -- that's the help I was looking for, as I knew that something wasn't quite right when I was creating the record. So, because this isn't apparent when I edit the record above, when creating a new publication for Event Horizon in 1998, I should put "Event Horizon - 1998" in the Series under Title? --Gengelcox 09:59, 5 February 2020 (EST)

Magazines are a little tricky. We group the issues using a "Title" series. So if you enter a new issue of this webzine, you should put "Event Horizon (online)" in the Title Series slot, not in the Publication Series slot (The gist of the Title Series vs. Publisher Series distinction is that if a different publisher published another similar work, would it still have the series? If so, it's a title series, if not it's a publisher series). Our magazine handling is further complicated by our practice of tending to group issues by year for anything published frequently. We do that by merging the individual Title records into one -- so for magazines, the issue's actual title on the Publication record does NOT match the title on its associated Title record. Here, that Title is "Event Horizon - 1988". You can do this merging only after the original submission has been accepted. To start the grouping for a new year, say 1989, after the first issue for that year has been accepted, you go back and edit the Title record to the year format and change its date to be just the year with 00 for month and day. E.g., you'd enter and submit "Event Horizon, January 15, 1989" with date 1989-01-15 and Title Series of "Event Horizon (online)", then after submission go to the Title record and change it to "Event Horizon - 1989" and date 1989-00-00. You'd leave the publication associated with the title alone (so it would still show "Event Horizon, January 15, 1989" as the title text and 1989-01-15 as the publication date. When you enter the April issue, after submission instead of editing the April title record, you would simply merge it with that "Event Horizon - 1989" record. Then that title will have two publications associated with it -- the January issue and the April issue. You're free to try any of this; it's all moderated and will get reviewed and fixed up if anything goes awry. --MartyD 06:43, 6 February 2020 (EST)

Clarksworld, Issue 174

I approved your submission of Clarksworld. I fixed the scan for you; when Amazon has a scan containing a section like "https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51uI22Tq02L._SY445_.jpg" you need to delete the text between the underlines, for example to "https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51uI22Tq02L.jpg". And you need to correct the title to "Clarksworld, March 2021" and put the issue number in the notes; this is standard practice for magazines in the ISFDB. There are no page numbers for an ebook; the equivalent number of pages can go in the notes as well, as can the number of KB if given. And you should add the ASIN in the space "External IDs" for all ebooks. Bob 20:31, 12 March 2021 (EST)

Comics

Comics and Graphic novels are only eligible if they are from our above threshold authors - think Neil Gaiman :) Frank Miller does not have enough non-graphic titles to get even close to the threshold so this is out. I know we have this one but it is here because it got a Hugo as a non-fiction book (and even that is based on the old-ish rules so it may need removal...). In all cases, it is an exception and does not make the rest of Miller's work eligible.

Let me know if you have any questions/concerns. More on eligibility: excludes comic books explicitly; the ROA explains what is included - point 4 (the threshold) is the only one that overrides the exclusions. Annie 21:56, 21 March 2021 (EDT)

Forever 74

Can you confirm that the title of the story by Michael Bishop in this issue Forever 74 is titled "To the Land of Snow". There are several sources that give it as "To the Land of Light". Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins|talk 22:13, 10 November 2021 (EST)
