Galactic Journey

I holding your addition of Galactic Journey as a fanzine. Looking at the supplied link, this looks like a website blog. While ISFDB does catalog webzines, we don't catalog websites in of themselves. We limit our inclusion to online periodicals with distinct issues (see our policy for more details). Abyss & Apex or Beneath Ceaseless Skies would be examples of webzines. Ah, you are correct. It is web only. Is there any way to accommodate web-only entities? Given that they are now eligible for awards (and the Journey has won the Serling and was a Hugo finalist), it seems there should be some way to give them credit in the isfdb. There are, after all, nearly a thousand articles now on the Journey, far more than was published in most fanzines. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Galacticjourney (talk • contribs) .
The issue is not that it is web (we're fine with that). The issue is whether it is an online periodical or simply a blog. We do give extra weight for awards so I will post this at ISFDB:Community Portal. Please feel free to comment there. Also, it's best to sign your posts as it makes following conversations easier. You can use the little signature looking button above the edit window which will insert --~~~~. On the ISFDB database pages, you should see a "My Changed Primary Verifications" link on the left menu. It actually should be highlighted if you haven't clicked on it yet (the highlighting is to let you know there are new changes). If you click it, it will show edits to your verified pubs. You can click on the listed edit and see the changed fields. Unfortunately, our history function is incomplete (there are plans to expand it). It will only show the current data, but it will at least tell you what Dirk edit and what he changed it to. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:27, 31 December 2018 (EST)

Editing a magazine/webzine

Hi, I rejected all your submissions, sorry. Please read our wiki before you make more submissions. Also, look -open them in 'edit mode'- at how other fanzines/magazines/webzines are entered, and try to emulate that. I know it is not as easy as it looks at first glance, but everybody is allowed to make mistakes in the beginning.--Dirk P Broer 18:54, 9 January 2019 (EST)

I've tried 2017 again, this time putting the authors at the top rather than by individual article (there are more than a hundred articles under the single 2017 entry -- it would be prohibitively difficult to include them all. That's why we opted for the annual omnibus approach when listing in the ISFDB). Please let me know if this works for you so I can then enter the other years. Rediscovery: Science Fiction by Women (1958-1963)

Hello,

I approved the addition but need to make a few changes:

  • We normalize names so authors with two initials always have space between the initials: so A. J. Howells for example
  • The review sections is for revies contained INTO the book not reviews of the book. So I removed that
  • Generic titles (such as Foreword and so on) need to be disambiguated with the title of the book - or you end up with a page of essays called "Introduction" on the more prolific introduction writers :). I fixed the two in this book.
  • Is "1958 Hugo Awards Ballot" really a picture? And is it credited to "Worldcon Committee"?

I also merged all the stories that we already had in the DB with their proper entries. For the ones that did not get merged, can you verify the spelling of the titles and the author names so we can try to figure out where they are (I suspect that "Of All Possible Worlds" is by someome else - the author you have there is born in 1973 :) The result is here. The Ballot really is a picture.. of the ballot. I can't think of who else to credit it to (though I got it from Fanac).

The merge is always a second step. So after it is approved and if a moderator does not do the merges, go back to the publication. In this case, this one. Look on the left. There is a link called "Check for Duplicate Titles" under Editing Tools. It will open this page. It should be self-explanatory from there. :) I will leave this one for you to finish so you can get some practice.
Can you also verify this one. Is that how the name is spelled? If so, you need to do two things:
  • variant the story to its original here
  • make the new name of the author a pseudonym of the canonical name.

If you ever need help or have questions, you can always post on the Community portal. Or on my page if you do not mind waiting for me (in case I am not around). The DB can be a bit... interesting sometimes and the learning curve can be severe.

Recording interior artwork

Hi. In answer to your question about recording the interior artwork credit for your newly-submitted Kitra, the way we do that is with additional content titles of type INTERIORART (the cover art is handled using the same underlying mechanism, but it's given special handling for data entry and display). You could have done it at creation time, but you can also do it now:

  1. Visit that record and Edit it.
  2. In the editing screen, you'll see a Content section. It's not intuitive, but in the Regular Titles subsection, click Add Title.
  3. Give a title (see below), choose INTERIORART from the menu on that line, and add the artist's name as credited in the pub. You can leave the date blank if you want it to get the same date as the pub's. Length does not apply. See below for page number considerations.
  4. If you are adding multiple distinct credits, repeat 2-3.
  5. Submit. This is moderated, just like any other change.

Most of the time we make a single INTERIORART record to cover the general "Illustrations by..." sort of credit, and we use the same title as used for the publication. So here, you might create just one title and use "Kitra", and we give no page number. If the individual illustrations are joint works, we credit each artist as an "author" on that one title. If multiple artists did different illustrations throughout the publication, we make one such title per artist. If there is only one piece of interior artwork, we give a page number, and there are some special page designations (see "Page" in Help:Screen:EditPub#Regular_Titles). If we want to credit individual illustrations for some reason, then if the illustrations have titles, we use those, or captions (putting the text in quotes). If they have neither, we use the publication's title with some sort of parenthetical disambiguator -- e.g., "(Map)" -- or a simple bracketed counter "[1]", "[2]", and so on, and give page numbers.

If you go to the Advanced Search for Titles screen and make the criteria be TITLE TYPE + IS EXACTLY + INTERIORART, you can find all kinds of examples. Unfortunately, quoted things and Cyrillic sort first. You can see if this will work for you -- I tried to constrain it to get better examples.
