Revision as of 21:06, 14 August 2022

Hello, Gabcisoft, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Stonecreek 03:44, 1 May 2021 (EDT)

I approved you submission of Világlélek. Now you need to variant that title to Душа мира, and variant the names of the authors. You should also enter the page numbers for the essays and the novel itself since you have the pub, and identify the translator it is given. Bob 14:57, 8 May 2021 (EDT)

Az orchideák bolygója

I accepted Az orchideák bolygója, but it had a invalid checksum for the ISBN. Please doublecheck against the book. I already updated the record and added a note if that is indeed the version on the book. If it was a typo during entry, please enter the correct one and remove the pub note. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:37, 14 May 2021 (EDT)

The same issue with Az űr legmélyén. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:49, 15 May 2021 (EDT)

I approved your submission for Varázsló-átok, but removed the bad ISBN. When you get a bad checksum, remove the ISBN. I know it's in the pub, but the editor(s) made a mistake; don't support their mistake. Bob 22:30, 17 May 2021 (EDT)

Author pseudonym recording

Hello. Just an FYI - if you record an author and his or her pseudonym/alternate name, then you not only have to variant the titles, but also have to link both names with the 'Make/remove alternate name' menu item on the left that appears when you've selected the alternate-name record. I've done that for you for the Tibor Bihon <-> Robert Knight (Hungary) relationship. Also, the canonical author name is the name with which he or she is most well known. In this case, Tibor Bihon should be recorded as the alternate name of Robert Knight (Hungary) - the opposite of what it is right now. Let me know by replying to this message (the small 'edit' to the right of this message's title) if you need assistance with switching the relationship around. Regards, MagicUnk 11:48, 27 May 2021 (EDT)

Hi ! I think I would be able to switch the relationship, but I'm not sure that it would be the best decision. Bihon Tibor used more pseudonyms in his publications. Robert Knight is only one of them. And besides the pseudonyms he also used his real name in some publications. So it is hard to tell which is the best known name. Gabcisoft 13:40, 28 May 2021 (EDT)

Then it might be best to leave as-is, and record all pseudonyms under Tbor Bihon. Regards, MagicUnk 06:57, 30 May 2021 (EDT)

Zsoldos Péter

Hello! I've approved your submission of A Viking visszatér. But for your information: There was already an author entry for Zsoldos Péter under the name Péter Zsoldos. I renamed Péter Zsoldos and merged your entry with the existing title entry. Regards Rudolf Rudam 12:51, 5 June 2021 (EDT)

Thank You Rudam.
I saw the Péter Zsoldos entry in the database, and I wanted to merge the authors, but I was not sure which name should be the canonical name. In Hungary hi is kmown as Zsoldos Péter, but in the rest of the World probably Péter Zsoldos form is better known.
There is a similliar situation with Fekete Gyula .I also added a book of him to do database while there is an entry for Gyula Fekete Gabcisoft 13:18, 5 June 2021 (EDT)
I've changed Gyula Fekete into Fekete Gyula. You're welcome. Rudolf Rudam 13:56, 5 June 2021 (EDT)
I've also changed Mária Szepes into Szepes Mária Regards Rudolf 13:11, 20 June 2021 (EDT)
May be Zoltán Csernai also should be changed to Csernai Zoltán Gabcisoft 16:48, 21 June 2021 (EDT)
I'll change it. Rudolf Rudam 01:30, 22 June 2021 (EDT)

A tenger tigrisei / Tigers of the Sea

A quick question about this submission. It would make a SHORTFICTION Hungarian title into a variant of an English COLLECTION title. Was that intentional or did you mean to link another pair of titles? Ahasuerus 17:37, 21 July 2021 (EDT)

I intended to link it to Tigers of the Sea SHORTFICTION (Title Record # 63261) Gabcisoft 17:44, 21 July 2021 (EDT)
Thanks for the clarification! I have rejected the original submission and linked the 2012 translation to the 1974 SHORTFICTION record. Do you happen to know if the 1990 Hungarian translation, which is present in another one of your verified publications, was done by a different translator?
Also, after approving this submission, I moved the cover scan URL from the Catalog ID field to the Image URL field. Ahasuerus 18:09, 21 July 2021 (EDT)
The 1990 publication is a translation done by Nemes István, but the translations are not identical. I'm not sure if I should merge them. Gabcisoft 09:20, 24 July 2021 (EDT)

Cover art for 'Atlantisz fantasztikus magazin, June 1990'

Hi, I have just seen your entry and the cover art is definitely not by Alan Craddock. Les Edwards did that picture and it is available here. Does the magazine actually credit Craddock? If so, then please also make a corresponding remark in the notes. Thanks. And I have also varianted the cover for the May edition to it's first publication. Best, John. --JLochhas 16:32, 24 July 2021 (EDT)

I checked it again. The magazin credits the artwork to Craddock . Should I change the artist name and put a note that in the magazin it is credited to Craddock , or leave the artist name as it is in the magazin and make a note with the correct artist name ?Gabcisoft 18:53, 24 July 2021 (EDT)
A similar case is handled here: Make the artist 'Alan Craddock (in error)' and then make him a Les Edwards pseudonym and variant the cover to Les' original. Thanks. JLochhas 04:00, 25 July 2021 (EDT)

A note on price format

Hello. Just an FYI - prices are with space after Ft and with , as thousandth separator, and . as decimal separator per the rules. See here. The relevant text is

Period (".") should be used as the decimal separator and comma (",") as the thousands separator, regardless of currency or native number format. E.g., €7.80 or Lit 1,000. Do not enter a space when the currency is represented by a symbol (e.g. $, £, €, ¥, ℳ). When using an alphabetical (non-symbolic) form or abbreviation of the currency (e.g. DM, Lit, Ft), a space should be added between it and the numeric amount.

I went in and updated a bunch. Regards, MagicUnk 11:35, 14 September 2021 (EDT)

A visszatérő disznó

I hit approve on this submission too fast. It varianted a story by K. J. Parker to a story by Tom Holt. Is that what you intended? -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:41, 25 September 2021 (EDT)

As far as I know this stry was writen by Tom Holt under the pseudonym K. J. Parker —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gabcisoft (talkcontribs) .
D'oh! (in my best Homer Simpson voice). Sorry, I knew that pseudonym, not sure what I was thinking yesterday. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:06, 26 September 2021 (EDT)

And on this one, should the author of Közszolgálat be the same as the story title? Or is that a typo? -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:42, 25 September 2021 (EDT)

Közszolgálat as author was a typo. This story was writen by Megan Lindholm ( a pseudonym of Robin Hobb ) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gabcisoft (talkcontribs) .
I approved the variant and then changed the author of the translation to Megan Lindholm. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:06, 26 September 2021 (EDT)

A birodalom felemelkedése

You had a bit of a copy/paste incident here and the ISBN of Pratchett's Erik ended up as a title (the original submission). I fixed it and added the translator - you can save yourself a step later if you add that in that initial submission (in the "Title Note" at the upper part of the page). Annie 17:32, 28 September 2021 (EDT)

We are recording translators on the title level using a template. You can see how I did it here. It will be very useful if you can add these to the books you are adding. Thanks! Annie 18:29, 29 September 2021 (EDT)

Great job adding the template here However, we need it in the TITLE note - it is ok if you want to add it to the publication one, but we really need it on the title one as well. When you are adding a new book, there are two parts of the screen - the title one at the top and the publication one under it. We need the translator in the title note (the one higher on the screen). I copied it up for this book :) Annie 16:09, 7 October 2021 (EDT)

Sötét örökség

(splitting this out because it is a separate topic...) I added the translator Boza Gergely to your pv pub Sötét örökség as I found it in OCLC entry. --Zapp 16:19, 30 September 2021 (EDT)

And as we add the lengths of shortfiction pieces (short story, etc.), I did so for this collection. Stonecreek 03:36, 1 October 2021 (EDT)

Book size

Are you sure that all of these books are "pb"? "pb" is used for American style mass market paperbacks. Anything bigger is "tp" in the DB. The way to figure out what to use is to look at dimensions - if the book is 19 cm x 11.5 cm (or bigger on one of the sides), it is "tp". Thanks! Annie 18:33, 29 September 2021 (EDT)

Túl a kék eseményhorizonton

I had to remove the image from here as we have no permission to link to moly.hu You can either find the image elsewhere or you can upload it to our DB. Thanks! Annie 16:00, 5 October 2021 (EDT)

Júdás elszabadul 1 Re price error

Hi! Can you check the price on this book[1] I think you added an extra digit. Thanks.Kraang 12:53, 9 October 2021 (EDT) It was a typo . The price is Ft 3,990. I will correct it.

A csendes bolygó

I added a cover image to Your pv pub. --Zapp 13:45, 15 October 2021 (EDT)

Price format

You will see a lot of your books changed in the next few days - we are cleaning up the price field to be per the ISFDB policy - which is to follow the same format regardless of which currency is used or what the local convention is. In the case of the Hungarian books, that means "Ft Y,YYY.ZZ" format (Currency first, then space, dot used as a decimal separator and comma used for the thousands separator. Examples: Ft 1,200 ; Ft 7.50 ; Ft 345 ; Ft 1,200.50 and so on. Please let me know if you have any questions and apologies for us missing that for so long while you were adding books. And thanks for working on the Hungarian books! :) Annie 00:03, 4 November 2021 (EDT)

Chaining the Lady

Cover art for this confirmed as by Fred Gambino to me via Twitter. --Mavmaramis 12:06, 10 December 2021 (EST)

Hi. I accepted your Kristályszilánk submission, but the ISBN was not valid (I know it is the ISBN listed on the site). I could not figure out the correct ISBN, so I moved it to the notes. I also downloaded the cover image and added it. --MartyD 09:40, 20 December 2021 (EST)

This did end up having the group problem I first discovered in the comment below. I have updated the ISBN to be 963-7041-79-6 and adjusted the notes. --MartyD 10:15, 20 December 2021 (EST)

Ezüst erek

Your submission for Ezüst erek had the same invalid ISBN problem, but I found a couple of Hungarian sites that listed it with a different ISBN (using 7041 instead of 9474). So I put the original ISBN in the notes and used the valid one from the other sources. (Now I will go back and see if the publisher group could be the problem on Kristályszilánk. --MartyD 10:08, 20 December 2021 (EST)

I added cover art credit to 2010 thanks Susan O'Fearna 01:31, 3 March 2022 (EST)

Down to a Sunless Sea

For Down to a Sunless Sea, would you mind if I add the title "Author's Note (Down to a Sunless Sea)" on page 173? Thanks! Phil 07:50, 13 March 2022 (EDT)

Cover Image Uploading

Cover images should be uploaded using the "Upload new cover scan" option on the publication. If you are adding a new publication, you should wait for the publication to be added and then upload it using the link. The link will properly name the image as well as apply the correct templates. I downloaded the image you uploaded to Image:Covers_442036.jpg, re-uploaded it correctly, and then deleted the original. In the future, please use the upload link. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:57, 3 April 2022 (EDT)

Galaktika 13: Tudományos-fantasztikus antológia

Hi Can you check essays[2] on pages 121 & 122 they appear the same & the story on page 124 has the story as the author. Thanks.Kraang 23:17, 1 May 2022 (EDT)

A birodalmi flotta

Hi, this cover is by Chris Moore, not Jim Burns, see Time and Again. Horzel 15:13, 5 May 2022 (EDT)

Cover artist for Atlantisz fantasztikus magazin, April 1990

Hi, I've just come across this pub and the cover art is definitely by Les Edwards and not by Rowena Morrill, please check here for reference. What does it say inside the magazine? Thanks, John. JLochhas 13:46, 8 June 2022 (EDT)

I doublechecked the magazin. It credits the cover to Rowena. --Gabcisoft 17:43, 14 June 2022 (EDT)
I added a publication note, changed the credit to add " (in error)", and varianted to the original. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:34, 7 August 2022 (EDT)

Do you know the month of publication for your verified publication, Legendák? I'm holding the variant submissions from this title. I would like to add the month before I approve the variants. Thanks John Scifibones 19:59, 2 July 2022 (EDT)

Unfortunately I can't tell the month of publication. Gabcisoft 12:43, 3 July 2022 (EDT)
No problem, variantrs approved John Scifibones 14:33, 3 July 2022 (EDT)

A quick question about your verified Kozmikomédia. Could you please check if this is a translation of this collection? TIA. Ahasuerus 20:39, 26 July 2022 (EDT)

A Vándorok cover

Can you double check the cover artist credit for A Vándorok? It is entered as Todd Lockwood. However, the original English edition credits Tyler Jacobson. I have confirmed that is correct per Amazon Look Inside. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:01, 6 August 2022 (EDT)

As there has not been a response, I have updated it to Todd Lockwood (in error)] and varianted to the original cover. Please check the credit when you can. -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:06, 14 August 2022 (EDT)
