Der grüne Jademond publication series

Hi, I changed the pub series of Der grüne Jademond from Goldmanns Weltraum Taschenbücher to Goldmann Science Fiction. Goldmanns Weltraum Taschenbücher was only used up to pub. series #163. Jens Hitspacebar 18:20, 5 January 2018 (EST)

At the Earth's Core

I've added a line to the note for this pub regarding the publisher's address and the ad(s) at the end. My copy is for 1120 Avenue of the Americas and has one ERB ad with 18 titles, but rumor has it there's a version for 23 West 47th Street with only 3 ERB titles, plus other ads. Doug H 22:10, 8 January 2018 (EST)

At the Earth's Core (03324)

I've updated this edition of At the Earth's Core to make note of the ad at the end - 15G - which lists ERB books with individual prices, mostly 95c. There is supposed to be an edition with the ad 15J - ERB books but all at $1.50. Doug H 22:38, 8 January 2018 (EST)

My copy gives a list of titles and a price of $1.50 at the top of the ad. So mine is different.Don Erikson 19:02, 16 January 2018 (EST)

Pellucidar

I've added a line to the note for this pub of "Pellucidar" regarding the publisher's address. My copy is for 1120 Avenue of the Americas, but there's supposedly a version for 23 West 47th Street. Doug H 09:51, 9 January 2018 (EST)

Updates to multiple Ace editions of Burroughs

I'm going through my Burroughs collection and some notes from another collector and updating a number of Burroughs books. It seems that there are some ACE editions that have variations that differ in some combination of publisher address and/or advertisements. Where I own one of these variations, I am making a note of it in the publication and telling verifiers. It will take me a while to get through all of these and thought a 'batched' request to check your copies would be more efficient. I will update this entry with variations you have verified and let you know when I'm done. I've copied the three earlier ones into this list. If you've another preference, please let me know. Doug H 11:09, 9 January 2018 (EST)

I've added a line to the note for At the Earth's Core (F-156) regarding the publisher's address and the ad(s) at the end. My copy is for 1120 Avenue of the Americas and has one ERB ad with 18 titles, but rumor has it there's a version for 23 West 47th Street with only 3 ERB titles, plus other ads. Doug H 22:10, 8 January 2018 (EST)

I've added a line to the note for Pellucidar (F-158) regarding the publisher's address. My copy is for 1120 Avenue of the Americas, but there's supposedly a version for 23 West 47th Street. Doug H 09:51, 9 January 2018 (EST)
I've added several lines to the note for Pellucidar (65855) regarding publisher address, ad, UPC, and icon on the cover to differentiate from this other version. The existing note says there is no existing printing or edition, but my copy does state "This Ace Printing: August 1978". Can you check your copy? Thanks. Doug H 11:09, 9 January 2018 (EST)
Actually just a question regarding Back to the Stone Age (04631). The notes say only Frazetta was credited, but my notes say it was dual credited until 04632. I'll check my copy later. Doug H 11:40, 9 January 2018 (EST)
I've added the publisher's address to Back to the Stone Age (04636). The other variation has no publishing history and a different address, so unlikely any confusion. There is another entry for 04363 with a later date (1980) (and no verifiers and a Locus source) which is unlikely to be this other variation - the other address is earlier than our variation (1978). Doug H 11:59, 9 January 2018 (EST)
I've added a line to the note in Land of Terror" (47000) regarding the publisher's address and non-existence of a UPC code. The other variation already existed and the existing note regarding publication date is sufficient to differentiate. Doug H 13:21, 9 January 2018 (EST)
I've added lines to the note in Savage Pellucidar (75134) for the last ad and colour of ERB's name on the cover. These supposedly differ from another variation. Doug H 13:50, 9 January 2018 (EST)
Added ad description to Pirates of Venus (F-179) as the sole differentiator for another version. Doug H 15:59, 9 January 2018 (EST)
Added part of the publisher's address to Carson of Venus (09203) as the sole differentiator for another version Doug H 16:53, 9 January 2018 (EST)
Added the list of ad identifiers to the note in The Land Before Time (47023) as the only way to distinguish from another version. Doug H 21:34, 11 January 2018 (EST)
Added the ads to verified Return of the Mucker and added a new version with a different set of ads. You may need to switch your verification. Doug H 10:57, 15 January 2018 (EST)
Added the ads and address to your verified I Am a Barbarian and added a new version with different values. Doug H 11:19, 15 January 2018 (EST)
Added the ad to your verified version of The Rider to distinguish it from a new version. Doug H 11:59, 15 January 2018 (EST)

Escape on Venus

I replaced the Amazon image with a scan for this publication. Doug H 22:05, 9 January 2018 (EST)

Dolphin Island

The 253569 record for Dolphin Island is a puzzle as you have:

  • Date: date unknown
  • Notes: Stated 4th printing.

I have a copy of a 4th printing that states "4th printing, December, 1971" and so updated the 313400 record which has the 1971-12-00 date.

Could you please double check your copy and see if it has "4th printing, December, 1971"? If so, I believe the best fix is to move the notes from 313400 to 253569 both as 253569 is an older record meaning 313400 is redundant and that 253569 has a crisper cover image scan. There's already a discussion under way about how primary verifications can be moved. --Marc Kupper 14:56, 11 January 2018 (EST)

Mine says "BERKLEY MEDALLION EDITION, JANUARY, 1971 (3rd Printing)" and under that it says "FOURTH PRINTING" and no other date.Don Erikson 18:56, 16 January 2018 (EST)

The Outlaw of Torn

I have replaced the Ace library image with a scanned image in this pub. Doug H 23:21, 13 January 2018 (EST)

Bedford-Jones and Robertson's The Temple of the Ten

I'm going to convert our mutually verified publication of The Temple of the Ten from a novel to a novella. I investigated it because FictionMags has the original appearance as a novella and an estimate of the word count comes in at 35,517 words which is well below novel length. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 18:06, 14 January 2018 (EST)

The Chessmen of Mars

In your verified copy here, you have no cover image and say the artist is Bob Abbett. My copy has Gino D'Achille. The artist field was greyed out when I went to put the image link in, so I just left it. Can you check and let me know if you will be changing and how. Thanks. Doug H 12:09, 16 January 2018 (EST)

Seems someone else deleted my image and your artist. I am restoring my scanned image, setting the artist to Gino and adding the publication history to the notes. Doug H 10:07, 12 March 2018 (EDT)

Swords of Mars

Added scanned image, printing history, art credit to this publication. Doug H 16:43, 16 January 2018 (EST)

The Deputy Sheriff of Comanche County

Ace misspelled Comanche on the cover of their books, but correctly on the title page. I have updated this pub and made a note regarding the spelling. Doug H 21:15, 16 January 2018 (EST)

Some cover artists additions ...

... were supplied by a new editor for publications PVed by you. The cover artist in question is David Mann. Christian Stonecreek 00:10, 17 January 2018 (EST)

The War Chief

Added art credit and note for source to this pub. Doug H 12:16, 18 January 2018 (EST)

A Glory of Unicorns

I'm holding your clone of A Glory of Unicorns. The pub note you added is "1st printing as per number line." If that's true, why are you cloning a new record vs. using the existing one for that ISBN? -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:33, 18 January 2018 (EST)

Oops, should be 8th printing. If you let it through I'll fix it.Don Erikson 17:38, 18 January 2018 (EST)

Tarzan of the Apes

Does your copy of this publication have an essay "Tarzan of the Apes, Newest Folk Hero" by Richard J. Hurley on page [1] with the novel on page 7? Doug H 21:29, 19 January 2018 (EST)

Yes it does.Don Erikson 17:08, 20 January 2018 (EST)
Finally dug out the copy and updated the entry. Doug H 12:37, 3 April 2018 (EDT)

There was no image for this publication, but when I tried to load one it said one existed. It seems you loaded but didn't update the publication. I've added the image URL and updated the notes with the printing history, art credit and SBN vs. ISBN locations. Doug H 22:16, 19 January 2018 (EST)

Middle Earth: The World of Tolkien Illustrated

Hello Don, can you have a look at the ISBN of this publication? Thanks. Hauck 05:01, 21 January 2018 (EST)

Fixed my typo.Don Erikson 16:15, 28 January 2018 (EST)

Catalog numbers and ISBNs

Hi Don, Ahasuerus a little while ago split the ISBN/Catalog ID combined field into two separate fields, one just for ISBNs, the other just for Catalog IDs. A couple of your recent submissions had the catalog number in the ISBN field. I've moved them to the Catalog ID field, but since there was more than one I figured I should mention it in case you weren't aware of his change. --MartyD 06:50, 21 January 2018 (EST)

I totally missed the change.Don Erikson 16:16, 28 January 2018 (EST)

Feel the Fever

In your verified publication Feel the Fever the story "Orifice" was recorded as a novelette, which I changed to short story (it's 5,000 words). --Vasha 11:23, 21 January 2018 (EST)

KJ Kabza

Could you look at The Best Horror of the Year: Volume Six and confirm that KJ Kabza's name is in fact printed without periods between the initials there? Thanks, --Vasha 17:32, 22 January 2018 (EST)

I seemed to have misplaced my copy even though I read some of it less than a month ago. I'll keep looking.Don Erikson
Well, both the Amazon preview and the other edition of the book show it without periods, so if you think that is good enough evidence, you needn't bother to check your physical copy. (I am in the process of making two variants of the author's name, "K. J." and "KJ," and want to assign publications to the right one.) --Vasha 16:40, 28 January 2018 (EST)

Tazan the Untamed

Replaced the Amazon image with a scan, added printing history, art credit and SBN/ISBN locations to notes in this pub.--Doug H 11:27, 24 January 2018 (EST)

Banshee

The cover artist for Banshee has been updated from "Lasser" to "Ron Lesser". Since the source wasn't explicitly stately, this seemed likely a typo in the database based on a signature misreading. Please check when you have a chance and if the publication really credited as "Lasser", let me know and I will establish a pseudonym. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:19, 24 January 2018 (EST)

Pinocchio: The Adventures of A Marionette

Hi. You verified the Heritage Press edition and provided its cover image P511623. That publication record now gives author "Carlo Collodi". The cover image shows "C. Collodi". Does the title page name "Carlo"?

It does say C. Collodi.Don Erikson 15:55, 28 January 2018 (EST)

Both of the known earlier editions of this Walter S. Cramp translation T1429449 (1904) do credit "C. Collodi". That is, our 1904 and 1937 publication records as "Carlo" are wrong. Sources:

  • Two different title pages of (Ginn, c1904) eds. viewed online, at HathiTrust and Baldwin Library
  • LC and WorldCat library records for that ed. and (Limited Editions Club, 1937) both report "C. Collodi"

If your title page names "C. Collodi" we can fix all this by revising one 1904 title record.

(Author C. Collodi is new to the database this week, or restored this week, when I entered the 1892 first English-language edition. And the 1925 translation 1st ed. is now in the queue as I depart [1].) --Pwendt|talk 22:31, 25 January 2018 (EST)

I submitted "C. Collodi" and some augmentation of this publication record. I suppose that your book does have the color-illustrated title page that WorldCat reports. [2]
(In progress I note the translation in many Pinocchio publication records, and "Unknown translation" otherwise. Carlo/C. Collodi is by the way.) --Pwendt|talk 19:40, 29 January 2018 (EST)
Looking for the 1937 LEC #88 online I find this book at Amazon
  • Publisher: The Heritage Press; The Limited Editions Club for the George Macy Company, Inc. edition (1937)
  • ASIN: B000JL0DJS
If I understand correctly that is the undated Heritage Press "reprint" (with new page count, not reported at Amazon). In the image you provide, orange is the slipcase. Right? --Pwendt|talk 20:06, 29 January 2018 (EST)

Waldo and Magic, Inc.

Hello Don, I've put your submission on hold. May it be possible that the book you wish to enter is this one? Hauck 04:32, 26 January 2018 (EST)

I missed it so I'll cancel mine.Don Erikson 15:56, 28 January 2018 (EST)

The Adventures of Pinocchio

Hi. You verified a Scholastic edition P510065 and provided our cover image, which shows "by C. Collodi".

Does the title page specify "Carlo Collodi", as our publication record now reports? Is the translation specified? --Pwendt|talk 18:17, 26 January 2018 (EST)

The title page says "by C. Collodi" too.Don Erikson 15:58, 28 January 2018 (EST)

Pinocchio

Hi. You verified a Books, Inc. edition P255441 as "Carlo Collodi", no artist credit.

And with cover image that shows "C. Collodi".

I submitted the insertion "Unknown text (translator, date) as of 2018-01-27".

Approved.
The title page says "by C. Collodi" too.Don Erikson 16:14, 28 January 2018 (EST)

There is one Books, Inc. edition in WorldCat as [1939] (c)1939, "C. Collodi", Louis Beaujon, 252 pages (same page-count you report) [3].

It is "Louise".Don Erikson 16:14, 28 January 2018 (EST)
or Louise Beaujon (neither name is in the database).
Amazon shows "Louise" as 1939 both hc and pbk [4] [5]
eBay shows "Louise" and "Louis" as 1939 both hc and pbk [6] [7] [8]
--including one hc with dustjacket and several images [9]. Does that jacket match your illustrator?
Mine must be a later reprint, it has the same cover but the copyright gives no date, just "Printed in the United Staes of America"Don Erikson 16:14, 28 January 2018 (EST)

--Pwendt|talk 15:38, 27 January 2018 (EST)

Perhaps yours is a later paperback format issue of the 1939 ed., no date except (c)1939.
--Pwendt|talk 14:46, 28 January 2018 (EST)

Ace Edition of The Master Mind of Mars

I'm going to unmerge our mutually verified publication which is currently under the title The Master Mind of Mars. This should actually be under a variant title as "The Mastermind of Mars". Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 10:58, 28 January 2018 (EST)

The Adventures of Pinocchio, A Tale of A Puppet

Hi. You verified the 1972 publication record P254050. If the title is correct in wording and punctuation the indefinite articles "A" should be lowercase "a".

I didn't make that change or any other but did unmerge this work from another, which I have modified. Those are multiple submissions in the queue as I depart.

Concerning this and the two later Pinocchio above (apparently these will be sections 710, 711, 713) I will get back to you with a list of English-language translations that are in the database, whose first lines I know from some view.

Concerning the first Pinocchio above (708), my change of the NOVEL author from "Carlo Collodi" to "C. Collodi" is on hold by User:JLaTondre. So your Heritage Press book is now in the database as the sole publication of a distinct NOVEL variant. --Pwendt|talk 21:32, 29 January 2018 (EST)

Poul Anderson (Box Set)

I'm holding you clone of "Poul Anderson (Box Set)". Please see the "Boxed sets" section of Template:PublicationFields:PubType. Boxed sets should only be included if they contain unique information (their own ISBN, cover art, etc.). Is that the case here? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:11, 1 February 2018 (EST)

This clone has besides different printings and price but the box has a different design. I was going to add the cover art today.Don Erikson 15:28, 3 February 2018 (EST)

Tarzan and the Madman

I've added the LCCN to this pub and to this one. I also noticed that the artist is credited as Richard Powers, when the third printing (same cover) credits Robert Abbett. I'll update this once my edits pass and I figure out how. Doug H 16:58, 3 February 2018 (EST)

Tarzan and the Castaways

I've added the LCCN to this pub. Doug H 17:19, 3 February 2018 (EST)

I'm looking at the cover artist for this title and it seems to have both Abbett and Powers for the same cover as well. Doug H 17:38, 3 February 2018 (EST)
According to Zeuschner and ERB sites, Abbett was the artist. Powers is credited in the book itself, but that just seems wrong - the art style doesn't match. If you've no objection, I'll update the two publications affected- adding a note regarding the statement in the book. Doug H 18:31, 3 February 2018 (EST)
I see now it's not Powers. Go ahead with the change.Don Erikson 20:13, 3 February 2018 (EST)

Frankenstein / The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

A couple of questions on Frankenstein / The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde:

  • Should the first entry by Hal Taylor be interior art vs. fiction?
  • For Frankenstein, does the pub actually use "Shelly" on the title page or is that a database typo? The cover shows it as "Shelley".

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:49, 5 February 2018 (EST)

Blade (Box Set)

Hi Don,

Are you sure that you have the name of the author here spelled correctly? Because this seems like a set of the first 5 books [10]? If the name is indeed spelled this way, that's fine - I will approve and then variant and pseudonym. But if it is a typo, how about cancelling this one, submitting it again (minus content) and then importing the 5 novels (155695, 152032, 152362, 152702, 153099) (so we do not need to have 5 merge operations after that). What do you think? Thanks, Annie 18:11, 8 February 2018 (EST)

Jeffrey, Geoffrey, McCaffrey, it's one of those things I always get wrong. I'll do as you suggest.Don Erikson 18:32, 12 February 2018 (EST)

Ace Editions of At the Earth's Core

I'm going to add dates to three undated printings of Burroughs' At the Earth's Core that you have verified. The dates are from Robert B. Zeuschner's Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Bibliography. For this printing Zeuschner dates it as 10/72, for this printing he dates it as 1972 or 1973 (I'll leave that one as date unknown, but add a note), and for this one, he dates it as 1973. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 10:15, 10 February 2018 (EST)

The Lad and the Lion Cover Artist

Do you happen to know the source for Sanjulian as the cover artist for The Lad and the Lion. The notes specify that the artist isn't credited. I'm asking because Robert B. Zeuschner two Burroughs bibliographies credit the cover to Enric. I'll ask Bill to chime in if he has anything to add. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 12:53, 10 February 2018 (EST)

Don't know the source for Sanjulian, but don't think it's Enric, either. His own [website] has other covers for Tarzan/Burroughs but not this one. Style is more Sanjulian but that's not enough to go on. Enric can be contacted through the site, which is the only way to be sure. --~ Bill, Bluesman 13:39, 10 February 2018 (EST)
It was seven years ago so it was probably already crediting Sanjulian and I trusted it was correct. So I don't know.Don Erikson 18:37, 12 February 2018 (EST)
According to an ERBzine article, this is Sanjulian, but the Sanjulian site they reference doesn't seem to work with Explorer. Doug H 08:56, 13 February 2018 (EST)

In your verified publication Scottish Stories of Fantasy and Horror "Thomas the Rhymer" on p. 19 is listed as a short story. But I suspect it may actually be a poem. Hi Don. I was wondering whether you might check that the two later Scholastic Book editions of The Runaway Robot (1967 and 1968) do not have the nine interior illustrations by Wayne Blickenstaff. If the Allies Had Fallen: Sixty Alternate Scenarios of World War II

Hello Don, I've put your submission on hold. This books seems to me like a colelction of essays of a non-fictive nature. They may be out of the scope of the db as are other counterfactual "history" books. What are your thoughts on the matter? Is this book really "spec-fic" or "about" spec-fic? Hauck 05:20, 25 February 2018 (EST)

Sounds like "alternate history", although I don't think the policy considers the possibility of such works not meant as fiction. --MartyD 08:01, 25 February 2018 (EST)
Well, for me "In this expertly written book, historians suggest what might have been if key events during the war had gone differently, from the Munich Crisis to the dropping of the first atom bomb, including Hitler's declaration of war on the United States after Pearl Harbour and the D-Day landings. The authors, writing as if these and other world-changing events had really happened, project realistic scenarios based on the true capabilities and circumstances of the opposing forces. If The Allies Had Fallen is a spirited and terrifying alternate history, and a telling insight into the dramatic possibilities of World War II." describe more a series of exercises in historical science (or a kind of kriegspiel) than a "spec-fic" work or one about "spec-fic".Hauck 08:43, 25 February 2018 (EST)

Erewhon

I'm looking at your verified copy of Butler's Erewhon. I'm trying to track down the first US printing. Bleiler's Science Fiction: The Early Years gives this as published by Dutton with a date of 1907. I think the date is a typo as I can find no evidence in Worldcat, ABE and other sources for a 1907 Dutton printing. Worldcat does have several undated printings "[1901?]" which I suspect belong to this edition. I also found this scan which gives a Dutton printing history indicating that the first Dutton printing was March of 1917. This made me suspect the date of your copy, but I also found this Worldcat entry with a 1913 date. Does your copy have a 1913 date or did you get that from another source? I also should let you know that the Dutton reprints appear to be of the third edition (1901 Grant Richards). There were two editions in 1872. The second is revised and adds a preface. Please let me know your thoughts on the date of your edition. I would probably assume that the printing history from the later Dutton printing is correct unless there is concrete evidence to the contrary. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 09:44, 15 April 2018 (EDT)

Test of the Twins; A Note states “Copyright page states that the Library of Congress Catalog Card Number is 86-90222. This is the LoC Classification and not the LoC Control Number” I believe that the reference in the copyright page is an LCCN – albeit one which does not exist in the catalog and that the Note should state “Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 86-90222 on copyright page; a record with this reference does not exist”. The LC Classification is actually “CPB Box no. 582 vol. 22” which is a completely different reference. --AndyjMo 08:58, 22 April 2018 (EDT)

Did You Say Chicks?(!)

You verified this copy of the book with the trailing question mark, but not the exclamation mark on my copy of the novel. This seems to be true for the cover and title page and would affect the entries for the cover art, introduction and About the Authors. I noticed that the entry for "Yes, We Did Say Chicks!" is listed that way in the table of contents, but the actual story is titled "Epilogue"/"Yes! We Did Say Chicks!". Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe

Hello, I recently verified the first printing of this pub and this one that you have verified. I found a few differences that I'd like to double-check to see if they are real. (1) The title of the first printing has "The" as the first word of the title. Is this true for the later printings? (2) The first printing has two poems not listed in the records for your later printings of the same catalog number: "Spirits of the Dead" (pg. 347) and "To Science" (pg. 350). Are these indeed absent from the later printings? (3) The story "Dreamland" (pg. 336) is spelled without the hyphen in the first printing; is this true for later printings? (4) And finally, the 16th printing is listed under the canonical title but has a different title on the cover. I wanted to check whether Mystery and Imagination should be a variant title, or if the canonical title is given on the title page. Thanks, Ldb001 10:57, 2 May 2018 (EDT)

Both the 2nd and 16th printing are the same as the 1st in contents and with "The" on the title page. All the differences are mistakes.Don Erikson 14:49, 8 May 2018 (EDT)

Selections from Science Fiction Thinking Machines

Would you please double check the title of Selections from Science Fiction Thinking Machines? I'm holding an edit that would update the parent title record as the editor believes all editions should have a hyphen. I note the cover does show the hyphen and there is no note regarding the title page being different then the cover. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:08, 3 May 2018 (EDT)

The uncredited art on the first PB here is almost certainly Arthur Sussman, as the initials look exactly the same as the initials on Leinster's "Planet Explorer" visible at this link. But I'm new here and wasn't sure whether that was enough evidence to make the attribution. I have copies of both books and can verify that they're the same initials. Questions about cover for Ship of Destiny

Hi, there seems to be some sort of mix-up, because the ISFDB currently has two different verified versions of the mass-market paperback 9th printing of Ship of Destiny, both verified by you. This version has a cover image (of the older Stephen Youll cover), but incorrectly gives the cover artist as Didier Graffet. This version has no cover image, and gives the cover artist as Stephen Youll. Which is correct? Seems like one of them needs to be deleted or merged, maybe.
If you want to see the old Stephen Youll and new Didier Graffet covers, there are images on the fan site ThePlenty.net: https://www.theplenty.net/wiki/index.php/Ship_of_Destiny
Thanks for checking! BungalowBarbara 19:43, 23 May 2018 (EDT)

Gerald Kersh

You may know Harlan Ellison has a site dedicated to Gerald Kersh, and it has a wealth of bibliographic detail (eg. here and here) which I would like to use to enhance our records. This would probably alter some of the detail in publications you have verified (eg. Men Without Bones). Also, given the great amount of genre short fiction we have for him, would you consider Kersh to be 'above the threshold' as I do? I would like to add the non-genre short stories that are included in his many collections, but I want to get other verifiers opinions first. Given his standing as a highly respected genre author I think our biblio page for him is lacking and ought to more resemble that of Kurt Vonnegut, who also has a large number of non-genre short stories listed. What do you think? PeteYoung 13:14, 3 June 2018 (EDT)

The Man Who Was Poe

Hi. You verified a copy of Avon Flare ed., 1st printing 1991-08 P179441.

  1. Perhaps Canada price C$8.99 is a misreading of $3.99. My apparent 10th printing, no date, shows "US $3.99 [horizontal line] CAN $4.99" in vertical orientation on the spine and "(CAN $4.99) U.S. $3.99" on the front cover.
  2. Our current cover image shows an Avon Camelot ed. rather than Avon Flare, without any detail text. My apparent 10th states Avon Flare at both top of spine and bottom of title page, only. (We link Amazon image of the same Avon Camelot cover for a 2008 Paw Prints ed.).
  3. Apparent 10th printing, I say. The copyright page concludes with two lines "Printed in Canada // UNV 10". Does yours show the same except continue 10 9 ... 1?

Gerald Kersh's Men Without Bones collections

Hi Don, your verified 1962 Kersh collection Men Without Bones has considerably different contents from the first edition published just seven years earlier in 1955. I wouldn't even call it the same collection with a limited selection of the original stories: of the 13 stories in your collection only 3 appeared in the 1955 edition ('Men Without Bones', 'The Madwoman' and 'The Hack'), the other ten are 'new'. Would you consider it a separate collection that ought to have its own title record? (This is pretty common with some writers, e.g. look at the number of separate Kafka collections with titles like 'The Metamorphosis and Other Stories', etc.) Also, does the subtitle "and Other Haunting Inhabitants of the Wide, Weird World" appear on the title page?

I'd also appreciate some feedback to my original questions about Kersh on 3 June. Thanks. PeteYoung 09:25, 4 July 2018 (EDT)

Shield

Greetings, Don! I attempted to slightly change the record for [this] publication by changing the quoted last-page printing date from 74-09 to 9-74 and noted [only in the 'note-to-moderator' space] that the spine number actually doesn't have a checksum. Instead of checking with you or accepting the edit [I do own the book] the moderator rejected it and noted I should clone it instead. Berkley never used codes like 74-09 so I know the original note was just a 'typo' but I guess the moderator was too busy to check with you. The other verifier is long gone. So, can you confirm that your copy has the 9-74 date and that the spine # does not have the checksum? Much thanks. --Artisan 00:08, 17 December 2018 (EST)

The spine doesn't have a check sum. I notice some contributors here have added check sums to a SBN turning it into a ISBN (possably thinking they were fixing a typo). And it says 9-74 on the last page.Don Erikson 15:19, 6 January 2019 (EST)
Thanks very much, I appreciate the response [knew cloning it was just plain wrong]. While I would have no problem adding a leading '0' or some other number for foreign editions, manufacturing a checksum just seems like 'faking' data that just isn't there. I'll make the minor correction to the notes. Thanks again. --Artisan 21:04, 6 January 2019 (EST)

The 5th Fontana Book of Great Horror Stories

For The 5th Fontana Book of Great Horror Stories, I've compared it against the Internet Archive scan and see the following deltas:

  • Title page has "Fifth" vs "5th" in title
I've changed to "Fifth" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
  • Publisher is "Beagle Books" vs "Beagle Boxer"
"Beagle Books" appears on title page and copyright page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
It is "Beagle Books" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
  • Page 76 has the title as "The Sea Raiders" vs "The Sea-Raiders"
It appears that way on the contents and story page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
For some reason the first 10 pages of "The Sea Raiders" have been ripped out of my copy but the title at the top of the remaining pages is without a hyphen like the contents page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
  • Page 151 has the title as "Mrs Amworth" vs "Mrs. Amworth"
Fixed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
  • Page 168 has the author as "A. M. Burrage" vs "Ex-Private X"
It appears that way on the contents and story page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
Just "A. M. Burrage". BTW I changed page number to 166 also. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .

Would you please double check your edition before I make updates. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:12, 6 January 2019 (EST)

The pub has not changed & you have no pending edits so looks like something went amiss. As your responses say your copy matches the Internet Archive version, I have made the following changes:
  • Changed the title from "5th" to "Fifth"
  • Changed the publisher from "Beagle Boxer" to "Beagle Books"
  • Removed "The Sea-Raiders" and imported its "The Sea Raiders" variant
  • Removed "Mrs. Amworth" and imported "Mrs Amworth" variant
  • Removed the "The Waxwork" as by Ex-Private X and imported its parent as by A. M. Burrage
  • Expanded the notes
The record should now match the publication. Thank you for checking. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:10, 7 January 2019 (EST)

Technology

I have a question about your verified publication Technology -- I hope you have the book available. I am puzzled by the statement that pages 51-54 (approximately) are "Night - short fiction by Sarah Teasdale." Firstly, the author's name is Sara Teasdale; secondly, as far as I know she only wrote poems; thirdly, most of her poems are short and the one titled "Night" is only four lines. I can't help noticing that Ray Bradbury's story "There Will Come Soft Rains" follows a contribution by the poet who wrote the poem "There Will Come Soft Rains" -- is that poem in there somewhere?

Similar questions about "Fear - short fiction by Nikki Giovanni," Giovanni being also a poet. --Vasha (cazadora de tildes) 03:14, 8 January 2019 (EST)

I fixed the two items to poems. As to the pages, there is a blank page them a page with graphic of a giant ampersand then a page that says "There Will Come Soft Rains" then another blank page then a page with story' title and Bradbury's name. It looks like they were trying to pad the number of pages maybe for printing reasons. You don't want too many blank pages at the end, it looks like you don't know what your doing. I nearly lost a job because my boss once told me we were using 8 page signatures and not 16.Don Erikson 20:10, 8 January 2019 (EST)
OK, thanks, that makes sense now (well, sense within the bounds of some questionable publishing decisions). I made "Sarah Teasdale" an alternate name for Sara Teasdale too. --Vasha (cazadora de tildes) 21:27, 9 January 2019 (EST)

Creeps by Night; The Red Brain

Hi. You verified our 1st ed. publication records P352219 and P315959 for these two 1961 anthologies, which contain 10 stories each from the 21-story 1931 anthology introduced by Dashiell Hammett.

Previously we have 1931 publication dates for the ESSAY introductions, revised to 1961 only now as I make them variant Titles of the 1931 ESSAY "Introduction (Creeps by Night: Chills and Thrills)" T1068456.

  1. Do the 1931 dates mean that the original introduction is reprinted entirely in both of the subcollections? If it's my decision, I won't undo the variant Title relation, only note the fact in the parent ESSAY Note.
The introduction are the same in both books with a 1931 copyright indicated for both. There is no mention that the intros were revised for the 1961 editions.Don Erikson 19:47, 5 May 2019 (EDT)

The Jewel of Seven Stars

Don, You are one verifier of the 1972 Scholastic abridged edition in its 1st printing P360620. SFE3 lists that abridgment of the 1903 novel ("cut of the above") and no other. It is not represented by a distinct NOVEL Title record here.
And you are our only verifier of the 1968 Tower Books Dracula's Curse and the Jewel of Seven Stars P291425, which reports 218 pages; and page numbers 5, 21 for the two works (evidently almost 200 pages for The Jewel). There The Jewel is an abridged novella[*], for which this is our earliest reported publication.

Do you intend that the 1968 book does not contain the 1903 novel?

It is the full novel. I don't know which ending it has but the last paragraphs are pretty grim. I think almost everyone but the narrator dies.Don Erikson 15:15, 9 July 2019 (EDT)

[*]T944701 represents the abridgment formerly known as a 1902[sic] novella, formerly with a one-line Note. By the time you read this, the record may be revised again pending input from others who have entered it as publication contents.

Concerning the 1912 modified ending (up beat, by replacement of a few down beat pages): if you are interested, then see page x of the 2004 Davies introduction view as "Look inside". Ideally we should identify later publications as containing the 1903 or 1912 or both. --Pwendt|talk 18:00, 30 May 2019 (EDT)

  • 40 chapters (28)
  • I. "When Adam Salton arrived at the Great Eastern Hotel he found waiting ..."

You are also our source for the 1979 Zebra Books P77665 as 192 pp (last page unnumbered?). For that book, OCLC:9995398 (not the WorldCat record we link, which is not found today") states:

Notes: Originally published by Rider & Co., 1911.
Description: 191, [2] pages ; 18 cm
The novel ends on page 191 but an afterword also starts on the page, written by the editor Kieth Deutsch dated 1975.

Does it indeed contain the original novel? Or the often mis-reported abridgment (Foulsham, 1925)?

  • 28 chapters

Hi Don,

Do you mind updating the format of this record or add a note on why it is not possible (multiple formats or rebound edition and so on). Thanks! Annie 20:41, 23 July 2019 (EDT)

Re: your PV'd http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?146501, my copy has slightly different jacket front than image shown. Mine includes "2006" and "Free CD Inside!" on jacket front, and has "First printing, July 2007" on its copyright page. If yours is as shown, and also has "First printing" on copyright page, then I'll enter mine as a variant. Thanks for checking. Markwood 12:45, 14 August 2019 (EDT)

My copy is an ex-library copy and has a large sticker over over the "Free CD Inside!" So I didn't notice it. I also didn't notice the "2006", but that's all on me. Your copy is the correct one.Don Erikson 18:01, 25 August 2019 (EDT)

Witches! Witches! Witches!

A quick question about your verified Witches! Witches! Witches!. It currently lists the author of the story "The Horned Woman" as Augusta Baker. It turns out that this story is an Irish folk tale first published by Lady Wilde in 1887. Augusta Baker was the editor of the 1955 anthology The Talking Tree: Fairy Tales from 15 Lands, where this story was reprinted, and not its author.

Could you please double check how the author of the story is credited on the title page of your verified copy? TIA! Ahasuerus 19:17, 20 August 2019 (EDT)

Augusta Baker is credited on boh the table of contents and the story page. But the acknowledgment page says "The Horned Woman" from The Talking Tree selected by Augusta Baker. Don Erikson 18:12, 25 August 2019 (EDT)
Thanks for checking! I have updated the publication record with your explanation. Ahasuerus 14:11, 27 August 2019 (EDT)
Your verified copy of Witches! Witches! Witches! has as publication date 1958, but also has ISBN 0-531-01823-7 and price $3.95, which suggests a much later date of publication (1977, accoding to WorldCat record 773284577). W.R. Lohse is given at WorldCat to have illustrated the 1958 Mulberry Books edition. Can you correct this?--Dirk P Broer 05:05, 29 August 2019 (EDT)

Black Oxen

Hi. You PVerified Permanent our record of the 1923 novel Black Oxen T20379 in Boni & Liveright 11th printing as published 1923-07-00. Probably you created our records of the 2nd to 10th printings, as published March to July --unverified records which Note that their publication dates are listed in the 11th.

HathiTrust holdings include apparent 4th and 6th printings whose copyright pages (Fourth, Sixth) list 1st to 6th Printing dates that are consistent with each other, but inconsistent with our March to July schedule. I don't plan to revise any of the publication records, only add a NOVEL title Note --and to report here if I find anything pertinent in contemporary newspapers. --Pwendt|talk 13:38, 5 September 2019 (EDT)

Among January notices of "Spring" books, I find one note in "Books and Authors", NY Times 1923-01-14 pBR21, that Black Oxen will appear on the 25th. It's subject of the lead and longest review in multipage unsigned column "Latest Works of Fiction", NYT -01-21 pBR14. In the same Sunday book review section next week pBR21, it's featured in a snazzy panel "Announcing the Publication Tomorrow, of ...".
Listed at $2.00 it's among several "Recent Fiction" in a full-page panel advertisement by Wanamaker's department store, Phi. Inquirer -01-29 p9. And it's one of 6 new books used in promotion of Womrath's Library ("... Join Now!"), NYT -01-30 p6.
That's all for now. When you get a chance, please describe whether the 11th printing displays a list of publication dates in format as linked above. --Pwendt|talk 16:02, 5 September 2019 (EDT)
The dates are indicated the same.Don Erikson 16:26, 5 September 2019 (EDT)

Night of the Saucers

I just bought a copy of this and I noticed that the Notes say that it was copyrighted in MMLXXII (2072). I'm sure that's wrong, since that's a date in the future, and my copy has it as MCMLXXI (1971). So I'm assuming the missing "C" in "MCM" is probably a typo, and I'm guessing that the "LXXII" is also a typo, or else I have a different book, which I think is highly unlikely. Bluesman verified it also, but perhaps he missed the date in the Notes. Thanks, Jack Sjmathis 16:39, 1 November 2019 (EDT)

You have verified several Bantam publications, the 7th, 8th, 15th and 17th printings. I will be using my 16th printing to fill in the intermediate printings. But I had a question for you - mine and the first printing have a Ray Bradbury essay at the beginning, which I will be including. Do your copies have it as well?

Also, given the reference to the 15th printing as a source, I assume you provided the 5th printing notes as well. The date (1964-09-00) and 1st Pathfinder publication match it up as the 4th printing in the notes in my 16th printing. I will be updating the notes to point out the conflict and be adding another 5th printing for July 1965. ../Doug H 16:27, 11 November 2019 (EST)

100 Ghastly Little Ghost Stories

A couple of questions on your verified 100 Ghastly Little Ghost Stories based on comparison to an Internet Archive scan of the seventh printing:

  • Does the title page have middle initials for Dziemianowicz & Weinberg? While the cover does not, the seventh printing has the initials.
  • page 147, is the author credit "Kirk W. Mashburn, Jr." or "W. K. Mashburn, Jr."?
  • page 153, is the author credit "Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu" or "J. Sheridan Le Fanu"?
  • page 354, is the author credit "E. Nesbit" or "Edith Nesbit"?

It is always possible it changed between seventh and ninth printings, but B&N usually doesn't update these. Also, your verification is using an Amazon cover image. Is that still the correct image? It matches the Sterling Publishing edition cover. Amazon images have a tendency to change so was wondering if that might have happened after your verification. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:34, 27 November 2019 (EST)

Cover attribution on Simak's City

Not sure who to address this to, but someone says the cover of City is by Don Punchatz, "according to Don Punchatz: A Retrospective." That seems hard to reconcile with the presence of Davis Meltzer's signature on the inside of the lower jaw (you can sort of see it in the ISFDB photo, but it's perfectly clear on a physical copy). I haven't seen this Punchatz book, and I don't know who made the edit, so I'm wondering if it actually credits Punchatz, and if so, what do we do when a secondary source is clearly wrong? // Mphillips 22:15, 27 November 2019 (EST)

  • Chapter I: "There was once, it may be now many hundred years ago, a good old fisherman, who was sitting one fine evening before his door, mending his nets. ..."

Verification request: author David Dean in Supernatural Sleuths: 14 Mysterious Stories of Uncanny Crime

Hi,

You have this pub permanently PVed http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?281015 , so I'm wondering if you're possibly able to help me with a question?

I've been adding the nominees for the Kitschies award, and one of the 2018 art nominees was a "David Dean". It looks like we currently have 2 different people of this name under the same author record http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?120561

I'm sure these are 2 different people - an artist who graduated university in 1999 seems unlikely to have been writing short stories in 1992 - but as a relative newbie to ISFDB, I'm - perhaps naively - assuming that part of the point of PVing pubs is to be able to chase up things like this? Any chance you can check that pub to see if it has any biographical notes for "David Dean" that might confirm these are indeed two different people?

Another of this author's stories is PVed by MLB here http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?429231 , so I'll pose a similar question to him.

Thanks! ErsatzCulture 10:00, 31 March 2020 (EDT)

Jules Verne translations

I have been documenting the various translations of Jules Verne's works and trying to identify a piece of text from each translation so editors can position their publications under the correct title record. You are on record as a primary verifier for one or more publications for which I am looking for text or which are placed under a generic translation title. I would be grateful if you could assist in this by checking your copies, as listed below, and providing the initial text for missing translations or an indication of the translation for those unspecified. These are listed on the Jules Verne Translations wiki. Thank you. ../Doug H 15:24, 14 May 2020 (EDT)

P.S. You've a hell of a lot of his books and I'm reluctant to impose, but. For what it's worth, this is a tail-end clean-up of a 2 year project, so no rush or worries if they don't get done. If I only got one from the list, it would be the last entry, where I believe the translation to be a completely new one.

20 Million Miles to Earth

As the lone verifier of this publication, I have a couple of questions you may be able to address.

(1) the cover art is attributed to Garonzi, I'm guessing because he is identified as the artist for Urania #164, but I notice that isn't the same artwork, it's a re-drawing intended to copy the Amazing novel art. Do we know that Garonzi did the art for the Amazing Novel? I can't find an attribution in the publication itself.

(2) the page count appears to be 130, although the novel itself ends on 120. Should the page count be changed? All the best, Ldb001 21:31, 30 May 2020 (EDT)

Regarding this publication. A review on thr US Amazon site here states: cover illustration by Ron Walotsky. I can find nothing to substantiate such a claim. How to merge duplicate, but PV'd publications

I believe that [15] and [16] are the same publication, but both are PVed. Any way to merge them together while retaining the verifications? --GlennMcG 18:11, 4 September 2020 (EDT)

We cannot merge publications, only titles. In this case, one of these will need to be deleted... Which means that one of the editors will need to move their PV. As Bill is not around but Don is occasionally, I would leave a note on Don's page about it with the link to the other one (so he can verify again) and request the deletion of the second one (which was added earlier but has less details...) Tales from Not Long for This World

I'm going to make some changes to our mutually verified copy of Tales from Not Long for This World. The title of the publication is currently listed as "Not Long for This World (abridged)" and there is a note stating "The title on the cover is preceded by 'Tales from' but not on the title page." This statement is not correct. The title page does have the words "Tales from" appearing in a smaller font above the rest of the title. I suspect that with the title depicted in negative space and the size of the font that whoever added that comment must have missed it. In any case, I'm going to alter the title and the note. "Martyr Without Canon" title type + original publishing info change

Hi. This affects your (and Michael Hutchins') verified The Year's Best Horror Stories: XVI. I left this this same note for Michael.

I accepted a submission changing Martyr Without Canon from short story to poem and removing the note about original publication in The Horror Show, Winter 1987. The editor's submission stated the note was in error and that the original publication was in Grue #4 (still 1987).

I did a little research and could not find anything definitive, but Homeville/Locus do list it as a poem in that anthology and cite Grue #4 as the original publication, and I found some secondary review references also describing it as a poem. So I decided to go ahead and accept the change. I also replaced the note about the original publication source in the title record.

If you see this, please check if that's correct (and I apologize if it's not) -- we don't have an active primary verifier. Thanks. --MartyD 12:46, 1 January 2021 (EST)

Don - I'm going to convert the two novels contained in Macleod's The Dominion of Dreams / Under the Dark Star. Damon Knight’s First Contact

Hi Don, I’ve found an unusual pseudonymous credit for Robert A. Heinlein in Damon Knight’s anthology First Contact (for his story ‘Goldfish Bowl’), currently verified by you as the only editor still around these parts. It’s currently credited to RAH as by “Anson MacDonald”, however my copy of this anthology has the author as “Richard A. Heinlein” on both the story’s title page and in the Contents. The Bradbury Epilogue to this has nothing to with The Illustrated Man, it is a rant on the ending of the movie 'Rosemary's Baby'. As such, it should be labelled an essay. Horzel 19:20, 15 March 2021 (EDT)

Don is no longer active here. The reason this has "(The Illustrated Man)" is that it originally appeared in the The Illustrated Man as can be see at the title record. If listed as a short fiction piece, then it should not have the "(The Illustrated Man)" added. If listed as an essay, then we would add the "(The Illustrated Man)" per our standards for disambiguating common essay titles (like we do with "Introduction"). This title appears in many verified pubs so the best thing would be to open a ISFDB:Community Portal discussion regarding it. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:56, 18 March 2021 (EDT)
