Welcome!

Hello, Dfrank, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Stonecreek 19:56, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

My mistake!

Hello, Dfrank! I accidentally approved your submission: accidentally because you changed a note in a three times (primary) verified publication. It is ISFDB etiquette to inform primary verifiers on such changes before submitting (don't fret, you couldn't know this) - or if you have also verified the publication to inform them immediately after the change if you only have changed or added notes, added a cover artist or a cover image.

I will inform the verifiers now, not realizing immediately that you changed something (only afterwards). But hey, welcome to ISFDB and do some additions in the future! Stonecreek 20:03, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

After this response I reversed the change. Well, if you'd take a second look, maybe you have a different printing! Stonecreek 09:48, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Linking uploaded images to the database record

Thanks for uploading cover images to the ISFDB wiki. The next step is to link those images to the records of the books for which these are the covers. As the instructions explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the description line in the Fair Use statement on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 21:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Cloning a record of a different work

You should not clone a record unless the title and the author field are exactly identical. I will accept the submission to create a record for the 1968 Magnum edition of Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but will have to unmerge it from the title record for Michael Strogoff, and then merge it with the title record for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In cased like this, use the "Add Publication to This Title" function instead of "Clone This Publication" function. Again, the latter function should only be used if the titles are identical. If you have to change one character in either the author or title field, you've chosen the wrong function. Please refer to this guide to determine which function to use to create publication records. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 22:44, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Sourcing records

All submissions to create or update publication records must be sourced. You should provide us with the source for the data you're adding or correcting. If you are working from a copy of the book, you should notify us of that fact in the "Note to Moderator" field of the submission. If you are not working from a book-in-hand, you should give the secondary source for your data in the "Note" field of the submission. Your contributions to the database are appreciated, but in order to maintain the integrity of the database, it is important that users believe that every effort has been made to ensure the data is as accurate as it can possibly be. Your cooperation in this matter are very much appreciated. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 22:47, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

The Many Colored Land & The Golden Torc

I rejected the submission to update this record, because it made no changes. I added the information you provided in the "Note to Moderator" field to the "Note" field. Anything you enter into the "Note to Moderator" field disappears upon submission. It should not be used to provide information about the publication. As labeled, it should be used to send a note to the moderator about the submission, not about the publication. Please do a Primary Verification of the record when you can. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:39, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Uploaded cover image files exceeding the limits

Please do not upload cover image files to the ISFDB server which exceed the limits. You should have received a warning telling you that this file is not within the standards. A file can be no larger than 150 kb (this one was 461 kb), and the image can not be taller than 600 pixels (this one was 1015!) I have copied it, resized it, and re-uploaded it. I've also linked it to the publication record, which is not done automatically, and explained to you in detail in a previous message. Thanks for contributing (but please follow the standards.) Mhhutchins 21:10, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

The Worm Ouroboros

You should have used the empty Primary 1 slot to do a primary verification of this record. Also, if the price is printed on the book itself (which I can see from the cover image you uploaded), you can remove the note about the source of the price. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:14, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

I've also linked the image to the publication record. This is not done automatically. It must be done in an edit of the publication record. This was explained in an earlier message. Mhhutchins 21:14, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Portals of Tomorrow cover art

I accepted your edit to add "Fiorello & Marmaras" as the stated cover artists for Portals of Tomorrow, however the entry field only requires the artist's names without the surplus information on where the cover credit is found on the book: I've added that information you have provided to the note. Also, are the artists/designers credited with any first names? If so, they can be input as separate entries. Thanks. PeteYoung 15:04, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

OK I understand. No first names were included.Dfrank 15:29, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Change of gutter code for SFBC ed. of Enchanted Pilgrimage

I'm holding your submission to change the Note field statement of this record concerning the first printing gutter code from "25R" to "23R". There are two active editors (Bluesman and Biomassbob) who should be notified of the change. Either of them may have a copy that matches (or not) the changes you want to make to the record. It is important to follow the ISFDB standards concerning primary verified records which you will find here. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:01, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

My copy definitely has 25R. If yours has 23R then the notes need more work as now 25R would be noted as a known reprint. --~ Bill, Bluesman 01:19, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm rejecting the submission. If your copy definitely has gutter code "23R", please rewrite the notes to add it. Thanks. Mhhutchins 03:58, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Cover art credit for non-genre periodicals

We don't credit the cover art of non-genre (not sf) magazines unless it illustrates a story which has been indexed in the contents of the record. (Entry standards for non-genre magazines are here.) I will move the credits to the Note field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:29, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Happy Birthday Wanda June

I'm holding you submission to add a price to this record. What is your source for the price of $1.95? That is very cheap for a 1992 trade paperback. Much cheaper than the 1985 printing. Mhhutchins 20:33, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

My copy shows 440-03422-195 so I mistakenly thought it was this record because of the 440. It is certainly $1.95 cover price, but there is no publication date. Dfrank 12:49, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
It's probably from the early 70s. Without a source for the date, it should be blanked. I have cloned the current record based on the data you've provided. Please do a primary verification of the record after looking it over and making any necessary changes to match your copy. Thanks for responding. Mhhutchins 18:21, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

The Casebook of Solar Pons

I have put your submission on hold for the unclear meaning of the pub. series Solar Pons. As we have a title series of that name it seems possible that you meant that instead.

A hint: it would have been better to use the 'Clone This Pub.' in this case. That would have copied also all of the contents, which have to be imported now afterwards (it is especially helpful for new publications of books that have many contents such as collections or anthologies. Christian Stonecreek 15:07, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Yes, title series not pub series. Will use Clone This Pub next time....sorry. Dfrank 12:55, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Ok, will approve and delete the series from the pub. series field. It just takes some time to become adjusted to the intricacies, I know it. Thanks, Christian Stonecreek 15:02, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Zagat's Seven Out of Time

I've expanded the notes and added items for the individual illustrations for Arthur Leo Zagat's Seven Out of Time. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 01:39, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Strange Bedfellows

I've added myself as 3rd verifier of http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?33477, and will up-load an image of my copy. My jacket has a little soiling, so feel free to replace with an image of your copy if it's cleaner. Question: in addition to "First Edition" on copyright page, does your copy also have a printing number line "9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2" (i.e., ending in "2")? That's what I've got in my book, and in all Random House first editions of that era. (They'd remove the "First Edition" in the 2nd printing.) Assuming your copy is same, one of us should add a note to the listing. Markwood 19:09, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Yes, my copy has the same number line ending in "2"

Golden Blood

Bob has asked me to add individual titles for the Fabian artwork in our mutually verified publication, Williamson's Golden Blood. Do you have any objections if I do so? Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 01:28, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Sounds OK, thanks

A Specter is Haunting Texas

I've expanded the notes for Leiber's A Specter is Haunting Texas adding the Reginald number. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 12:36, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Big Book of Science Fiction

Hello, I've approved your submission for this publication. If the price os from your copy, please delete the comment about Tuuck. Note also that it's better to take the PV1 spot first and not the PV2 spot as you did (it may confuse some new contributors). Thanks. Hauck 17:05, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

Fixed comment, and yes of course, should have been PV1, I missed that.

Tales of Secret Egypt

Hi. I was checking pubs by publisher A. L. Burt Company and noticed they are all listed as "A. L. Burt Company" (with space between A. and L." except for the one you entered in your verified Tales of Secret Egypt. For the sake of continuity of publisher names, do you want to change that in your pub? Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 22:42, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

This has been fixed, glad you pointed it out.

Matheson's Shock Collections

I've expanded the notes for Richard Matheson's Shock!, Shock II and Shock III, adding the Reginald, Bleiler and Worldcat numbers. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 15:55, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

Moskowitz's Horrors Unknown

I'm adding the Reginald and Bleiler numbers to Sam Moskowitz's Horrors Unknown I'll also link the existing Worldcat number that is already there. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 02:45, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Padgett's A Gnome There Was

I've added Reginald, Bleiler and LOC catalog numbers to Lewis Padgett's A Gnome There Was. I also noticed two things that I'll leave to you and the other active verifier to discuss. I'm leaving an identical note on their page. First the parent title lists only Kuttner as the author for the collection. Padgett is usually a pseudonym for Kuttner and Moore who are certainly credited with the stories collected in the collection. I also noticed that the secondary sources have the extended title of "A Gnome There Was and Other Tales of Science Fiction and Fantasy". If the title appears that way on the title page, you may want to consider extending it. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 03:34, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

The Playboy Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy

I've expanded the notes to The Playboy Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy adding Reginald and Bleiler numbers. I also linked the LOC number. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 21:59, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Hadon of Ancient Opar

I added "Chronology of Khokarsa" (page 203) to our verified pub. Also added a note explaining the authorship and merged the already existing versions of this essay. Hope you can agree. --Willem 20:25, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

The Making of Space: 1999

Beyond the End of Time

Hi. Re: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?4365, I added publication month (January) & pub note citing http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?251120. Markwood 02:19, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

You're All Alone

Best SF: 1968

added a pub note to your PV'd http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?244209 Markwood 21:41, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

You're All Alone

There seem to be two slightly different editions of You're All Alone. One with ad 33 on page 192, and a misspelling of the novel's title on the contents page ("Your're All Alone" v.s. "You're All Alone"). Mine is the later printing, so I cloned the original here. You might want to check your copy. Thanks, --Willem 19:37, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Second Galaxy Reader of Science Fiction

re: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?29427, I PV'd & added 3 stories that were missing from the ISFDB record: Sturgeon's 'Saucer of Loneliness', Clifton's 'Star Bright' and MacDonald's 'Game for Blondes'. Markwood 01:00, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Melmoth the Wanderer

Hello, I've put your submission on hold on two grounds:

  • As you take the PV1 spot, you can probably delete the "Price from Tuck" part.
  • We do not credit cover designers so if David Soshensky is not the artist (note that he's presently not in the db), he shouldn't be credited.

What do you think? Hauck 16:06, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Warm Worlds and Otherwise - a question

Hi.

I am researching which version of "The Last Flight of Dr. Ain" is in a number of publications, as there is both the original (1969 Galaxy) version and the "heavily revised" version first found in the 1974 "SF: Authors' Choice 4". I plan on updating the records once I am clear which is which.

After original 1969 Galaxy publication, the next appearance is in the 1974 version of "Warm Worlds and Otherwise". You are a primary verifier for the first edition of that. (http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?332234)

I suspect this edition features the 1974 "heavily revised" version, but I would like to confirm that. The 1974 text starts, "Dr. Ain was recognized on the Omaha-Chicago flight. A biologist colleague from Pasadena came out of the toilet and saw Ain in the aisle seat."

The original version starts, "Dr. Ain was recognized on the Omaha-Chicago flight. A biologist colleague saw him in an aisle seat while coming back from the toilet".

Thanks for your help.Dave888 10:54, 23 February 2022 (EST)

Credits for “Beyond Doubt” in Beyond the End of Time

Hi, DFrank.

I wonder whether you could check the credits for “Beyond Doubt” in the anthology Beyond the End of Time. My copy (copyright, 1952, Doubleday & Company, Inc) and the copy at the Internet archive both credit the story to Robert A. Heinlein and Elma Wentz (rather than Lyle Monroe and Elma Wentz) on the table of contents, the title page, and the running head.

I can submit a correction if you’d like me to.

All good things,
