Welcome!

Hello, DarkMatter42, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --MartyD 23:19, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Computers, Computers, Computers

Hi, and welcome. Thanks for adding the page numbers to Computers, Computers, Computers. Is it safe to assume you have the book? In such cases, if you find an entry that says "Data from Locus" or "Data from Amazon" or data from any other secondary source, you can delete the note or adjust its scope (e.g., suppose the book has no publication date in it, but Locus or Amazon provides one, you might then change the note to "Publication date from Locus"). Please do consider making yourself a Verifier if you do have the book -- just visit the link above and pick "Verify This Pub" from the menu at the left. Thanks, and thanks for contributing. --MartyD 23:24, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Image linking

I had to reject your submission to add a link to the image hosting service Imageshack. Currently that website is not among those that have given us permission to deep-link to their images. Here is a list of those who have. You can always upload the image to our server by clicking the link "Upload cover scan" on the publication record, and then following the directions. After uploading the image you'll have to update the record to link it to the image. (Further instructions are here. Mhhutchins 15:33, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

I accepted the submission to add a link to the record from the image you uploaded to the ISFDB server. Unfortunately you didn't follow the instructions, so there is no license tag to the image, and there is no link from the image to the publication record. The file name also doesn't match the publication's tagged name. All of this would have been done automatically if you'd only used the link "Upload cover scan" on the publication record. I'll do what I can do make corrections in the image file. If you have any questions about our procedures please post a message at the Help Desk. Thanks. Mhhutchins 03:09, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

The Apex Book of World SF

Expanded the notes & added cover scan for The Apex Book of World SF. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:41, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Linking images to publication records

As I explained above, uploading cover images doesn't automatically link the file to the publication. That must be done manually. I have done that for you here. I may have missed some, so please go back to the books and see if the images have been linked to the publication records. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:58, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Computers, Compouters, Computers

Added better cover scan, notes and LCCN/OCLC links to Computers, Compouters, Computers.SFJuggler 04:15, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

More importantly, you changed the title field. Please see the message I left on your page. Mhhutchins 04:28, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

The Mammoth Book of Nebula Awards SF

Thanks for adding the contents for this anthology. There would have been a much better way to add the contents: via importing the data. You may not have been aware (just as I wasn't aware) that there was a previous publication as The Nebula Awards Showcase 2011, from which an import could have been quite easily done. (Meanwhile, I varianted your anthology to this previous anthology title). This is somewhat unfortunate since the new, automatically generated shortfiction titles will now have to be merged with the previous existing ones. Have you tried this before, or do you Need help for this task? Stonecreek 13:29, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the advice. I really don't understand well enough how to properly contribute to the site, so I'm just trying to add stuff when I have the time and hope that if I do errors [and I seem to do them quite frequently] someone who knows how to deal with stuff here will try and fix it with hopefully not too much of a trouble. Emergence

A quick question about your verified Emergence: does it state "July 1985" on the copyright page? And is there a "number line" of any kind or any other indication as to whether this is the second, third, etc printing? TIA! Ahasuerus 04:13, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

Yes, the copyright page says the following: 3 printings through July 1985 and there's a number line allthe way down to 3.

Cheers, Mark. DarkMatter42 , 5 July 2014

The Mammoth Book of Nebula Awards SF (again)

Hi. This is to let you know that I have newly added myself as a verifier to this publication that you also verified, and that I made the following adjustments to the data:

  • Changed the page count field from "394" to "xiv+394". The reason is that the book contains pages numbered with Roman numerals, and it is the ISFDB custom to record this in the page count field. The EditPub help page has the details.
  • Added the artist "joeroberts.co.uk"
  • Added three titles. I let myself guide by the content of The Nebula Awards Showcase 2011. which records the original publication of our book.
    • Introduction
    • Final 2009 Nebula Ballot
    • Other Awards
  • Regularized titles of the two "SFWA Damon Knight Grand Master" titles. The inspiration for this came, again, from the pub record of the original publication.
  • Added extensive pub notes

Feel free to doublecheck whether the changes I mentioned are also in your book. Cheers, Patrick -- Herzbube Talk 21:05, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Publication series Del Ray Book

Hello! I have put your submission for adding a printing of Clarke's Expedition to Earth on hold. It looks good but for the mentioned publication series. I'd think that we wouldn't enter that, based on the fact that none of the other printings (in fact no other publication) has it. Would it be okay to drop it, or do you think it stands out for this printing? Apart from that: maybe there's also a typo involved, maybe you meant Del Rey Book? (But we don't have that either). Thanks for contributing! Christian Stonecreek 13:31, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Del Rey is an imprint, so it's entered into the publication field as "Del Rey / Ballantine". Thanks. Mhhutchins 14:47, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Okay, approved and changed as suggested. Thanks, Michael! Stonecreek 19:12, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Cloning instead of adding

Re this record: if you'd used the clone function from the record of another Del Rey printing of this title, you'd saved having to import the contents, and doing it all in one submission. Consider this the next time when adding a record for a COLLECTION, ANTHOLOGY, or OMNIBUS which has similar contents to another edition already in the database. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:16, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Adjusting a note field

Re this publication: When you're doing a primary verification of the data of a publication record, it is sometimes necessary to adjust the Note field concerning the source of the data. If the month of publication is stated in the book, then the source for the month should be removed from the Note field. Mhhutchins 20:20, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Niven's All the Myriad Ways

Please confirm the publication date given in this publication. Del Rey usually gives the month of publication. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 17:36, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently

I'm holding your submission to add a record for the Pan 1988 printing of this title. There is already a record for this printing already in the database, with the only difference being the price. In cases like this, it is best to contact the primary verifier of that record to confirm the price before creating a possibly duplicate record. I'll do it for you this time, but keep this in mind if you find any slight differences between your copy and another verified record. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 18:31, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

The verifier of the other record says their copy is a fourth printing. So I accepted your submission to make this record the first printing of the Pan edition, and gave the publication date from Amazon.uk and Locus1. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 16:34, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Permutation City

I replaced the Amazon image for this pub that you verified with an ISFDB cover scan. You might also wish to check

  • The page count: Your pub record has 376, but the last numbered page is 377 in my copy of the book (an 8th printing of your edition).
  • The cover artist credit: You didn't record a cover artist, but the credit to "Will Crocker" appears on the back cover of my book.

Machine of Death

Hi, I added some contents to the anthology, corrected the date and removed a now meaningless note about the source (because you are now the source of data): if you find time please do a review and add the correct beginning pages. Thanks, Stonecreek 02:31, 20 May 2020 (EDT)

The Mammoth Book of Best New Science Fiction 17

Hi, you have the tp of this verified. Can you confirm the title given on the title page is indeed what is in the title record? I recently picked up the ebook version, and the title page has "The Mammoth Book of Best New Science Fiction 17th Annual Collection". This matches the title format for the immediately prior and following volumes in that series.

I know that the cover and the listings on Amazon etc use the title as currently recorded, but - as the mods have reminded me on a number of occasions ;-) - what's on the title page wins out.

I can update/(re)variant just the ebook title, but if the tp is the same, then it obv. makes sense to update both of them. Cheers ErsatzCulture 07:03, 26 July 2022 (EDT)

I can confirm that the title on the title page is as you mention "THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF BEST NEW SCIENCE FICTION 17th Annual Collection". It seems like the 2 variants of the book that are shown on isfdb (here and here) should actually be unified to one item with 2 different publications (from 2004 and 2011)? Please feel free to edit the entries as you see fit. DarkMatter42 08:27, 11 August 2022 (EDT)
Thanks for response - I'll merge them shortly.

Changing contents of collection, "The Eye of the Lens"

Changing contents of collection, "The Eye of the Lens" [1]; disambiguating short story "The Eye of the Lens" from novelette "The Eye of the Lens" which is a concatenation of the three short stories, "The Hall of Machines", "The Coming of the Sun", and "The Eye of the Lens"; if that's OK. gzuckier (talk) 01:14, 27 November 2022 (EST)

I do not recall verifying any related pubs, what does this change have to do with me? DarkMatter42 (talk) 15:59, 27 November 2022 (EST)
You're listed as verifier of one pub of the collection of the same name containing the 3 separate stories. https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?267130 gzuckier (talk)
Is it wrong that the content has the 3 stories separate? I'm not sure I understand what needs to be changed. DarkMatter42 (talk) 03:02, 30 November 2022 (EST)
The problem is that the 3rd story "The Eye of the Lens" is listed in the contents as a novelette, but actually it's a short story of the same name, which we don't have as a title so I'll add it. The novelette named "The Eye of the Lens" is made up of the three stories concatenated together. gzuckier (talk) 00:17, 1 December 2022 (EST)
