Welcome!

Hello, Daffodil11, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:42, 7 November 2017 (EST)

Galaxy's Edge - 2021

You still need to add the series here :) I did it on this one but the series is how we connect the different issues of the magazines basically :) Annie 16:07, 26 January 2022 (EST)

Now I am confused. I thought I did what instructed. I edited the Editor record that you linked (but first I looked around to see how I would get to that screen in the future), then changed the title to "Galaxy's Edge - 2021" and changed the date to "2021-00-00", added a mod note and submitted it. Then I noticed your message here. Did I do this correctly but you were faster at it? Or did I do it wrong? If the former, please be aware that I am still new to this and am cautious about hitting the submit button. I tend to think things out so that I understand the process for future edits. I still have several things to do regarding this magazine issue (Galaxy's Edge, January 2021); including doing a title variant for the serial, importing several stories and an essay that are reprints, connecting one essay to a series, connecting reviews that had minor differences in title, and of course dealing with the "A Scientist's Notebook" notes. But I am still very slow at it due to not wanting to do it wrong. If you would like to see a magazine entry that I think I completed correctly (though it already had an entry without content, so this example does not include my creating the whole entry from scratch), please look at the November 2020 issue. If I am doing anything wrong or incomplete, I would certainly like to know. The farther I get into this, the more past errors I will have to go back and clean up if I am doing it wrong. Thanks! You did 2 of the three needed steps :)
  • Rename (you did that)
  • Fix date (ditto)
  • Add Series name in the Series field - that was missing :)
Yes, I know you are new and you jumped into one of our most complicated processes. Which is why instead of just fixing behind your back on approval (which I do for older editors), I came in and let you know that you missed a little tiny bit of a step in the process. I also merged it with the preexisting EDITOR with the same title as we already have some 2021 issues. Hope this makes sense. As the 2021 series entry already existed, you could have merged with no renaming - but going with rename/redate/series name never harms (and if it can be merged later, still works).
You are doing fine. No rush and I am not going to fix things unless you ask - and don't hesitate to ask for an advice or outright help if you get lost in something. Annie 16:41, 26 January 2022 (EST)
Ah, I see. I failed to notice the third step over on your Help Desk response, and the link you gave above leads to an error page so I did not understand. I do now (hopefully). Now back to more steps in the process. Thanks again! Daffodil11 16:50, 26 January 2022 (EST)
It is an error page because after the merge, this title ID does not exist anymore. I saw the merge a bit too late - and forgot to come edit. Have fun! :) Annie 16:54, 26 January 2022 (EST)

Verifications

Once you verify a publication, we can see that during moderation - so no need to add a note to that effect in the moderator's notes as well :) Just FYI. It does not break anything but in case you want to spare the few seconds typing/copying that part of it, you can :) Annie 17:47, 26 January 2022 (EST)

Galaxy's Edge, July 2021 issue - Cynthia Yau Is Exquisite

I have your submission on hold. As you are changing a PV'd publication, and in light of recent discussion on when to not-standardize initials (when it's not an initial, but a full proper name, when the author insists,...) - which I of course cannot find at the moment, best to reach out to the primary verifier (PeteYoung) first to seek confirmation that your update is OK. MagicUnk 12:16, 2 February 2022 (EST)

I am still somewhat new at this and am not aware of said "recent discussion." I was following as instructed in the Help section regarding this topic. It states, "Initials should normally be entered followed by a period and a space as "Gordon R. Dickson" or "K. D. Wentworth", even if the period or space is omitted in the publication. However, when it is clearly the author's choice to omit the period..."
If this is still the case, then I would say that the author's website would suggest that he has not shown a clear choice to omit the periods. Note that the book covers shown on the author's publication page include publications under the names Zig Zag Claybourne or Z.Z. Claybourne, but none show ZZ Claybourne. Perhaps the discussion that you mention negates all this. Regarding contacting PeteYoung, I have already done so and he has instructed me to proceed with the changes.
Considering that we already have the other name in all other titles, I'd advised to just submit the change. While we do indeed honor the author's wishes, we do not do on a title per title basis - so in this case, unless the plan is to change this one instead, the edit should go through IMO. If we want to do more research, we can always do that and edit the combined entry but this change is really just housekeeping that was missed when the magazine was added.
