Past Masters

You made an addendum to several of the titles in this series by adding the name of the author who is being profiled. In most circumstances, the title should be recorded exactly as it appears in the publication. You can always add further information in the notes of each essay's title record. Also, your submission to update the series did not contain any changes. What were you wanting to change it to? Thanks. Mhhutchins 04:40, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Adding data

Saw your question in the submission. There is no way to add contents independently of a publication. If there are columns missing from the Past Masters series, it is necessary to add the publications they were published in to the database or to add them as contents if those publications already have records but are simply missing those essays. What were the publications that the essays appeared in? The Help section has most of the cases covered, though you might want to start [here]. Questions can be asked in other places as well, [the Community Portal]; and the [Moderator Noticeboard] but the [Help Desk] is usually the best. To respond to this posting, just click on the "Edit" button to the right and type in below my posting, indenting with a colon [this 'steps' the discussion] and the second last 'button' above the editing window [looks like a squiggle] will sign your user name and date the response. --~ Bill, Bluesman 19:42, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

This user hasn't found his talk page yet, and from the posting in the submission, he's not found the Wiki either. He's not provided an email address, or I would have contacted him that way. I left a message in the reject of the submission. Maybe he'll read that. There's got a be a better way to communicate with editors in this position. Why don't we require an email address? Hi. Sorry about my Neanderthalian fumblings, but we old farts are so busy yelling at the kids in our yards and complaining about their music (it's a bunch of noise, y'know) that it's hard to keep up with stuff that really matters. The missing entries in the "Past Masters" series were in the last three issues of HELIX SF; the first ten installments were in HELIX, with the eleventh going to BAEN'S UNIVERSE after HELIX folded, and thence to GRANTVILLE GAZETTE when JBU went under. There are other entries to be made in my overall listing, including a couple more non-fiction books, but what's the hurry? I've added records for the remaining Past Masters columns. This listing became a very good source for the data. It also provided info on your Anthopology 101 series, which I'll be working on when I get the chance. Thanks for the response. We're not going to rush you about adding further entries to the database. Adding contents

Once you're on [this] page, choose "Edit This Pub" from the "Editing Tools" list which will show you [this] page. In the CONTENT section, there's a tab 'Add Title'. Click on that as many times as you need to add each item from the contents. Since the book is NONFICTION, then the Entry Type will be "Essay", available on the drop-down menu. If any of the contents were previously published then the date of the original publication would go in the date field, otherwise enter nothing and the software will automatically date each entry to the date of the record itself. Generic titles [Introduction is a prime example] should have the title of the book added in parentheses: Introduction (Anthropology 101). This disambiguates the particular Introduction from the other 8 million such essays out there. Give it a shot. We'll help out with any particulars that get missed! SFWA Estate Project data

Youse guys:

You may not be aware of it, but I'm heading up the Estate Project for SFWA and have been for not quite five years now. I've compiled a database of 400+ estates of sf/fantasy authors, which is viewable at the SFWA.org website:

In many cases, the estate representative is a family member, and those listings link directly to me so I can forward any queries to the family without revealing their contact information. In most cases, though, the estate is handled by an agent, and that information os available on the Estates page.

Might a link to this page be a reasonable addition to the ISFDB information sections for deceased authors? That way, anyone who is interested in reprinting material can do so quickly and legitimately.

Whaddaya think?

Bud Webster SFWA Estates Liaison

I think this is a good idea, but where to put the link is another matter. We store email addresses on the author, and can cope with more than one, so adding "estates@sfwa.org" to the relevant authors is easy, if time-consuming. Where we only have access to a name, then it could go on the Author wiki-page - there's not really a suitable database field for it. (The only problem then is that you have to be online to use it, you can't get the data out of a downloaded database copy.) BLongley 11:16, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

This is the third time I've tried to reply to this, but it hasn't taken. Maybe I'm not holding my mouth right or something.

Links...There don't actually have to be live links, except for those estates that link to my "estates at sfwa dot org" address. After all, the Estates page doesn't link to the agents/agencies, it just lists them. This might take care of the "online/download" problem, as they'd have to do a search for the agent/agency in any case. Ah, no, I see where I'm wrong. How about a simple text-arrow pointing to the SFWA Estates page, then? That way they can hit the page, do a "ALT-F" search for the name, and go from there? We could certainly add the estate page you link to above as an additional author web page for any relevant authors -- that is no harder than a text note, indeed easier -- the problem is that this would have to be done individually for each author involved. But any editor can do it, doesn't take a mod. Simply visit the author page, click edit author data, and insert the URL in the "Author's web page" slot, or if that slot is not empty, click the button for "add another web page" and then insert, and then Submit Data. -DES ^Talk 22:43, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

SFWA membership

I've never got an answer to this elsewhere, but would you as a known SFWA person support a "Affiliate" or "Institutional" Membership for someone here? I think we sort of qualify as "professional involvement in science fiction or fantasy" or an "Organization with legitimate interest in science fiction and fantasy". The phrase "must be able to provide the names of three Active members as references" might be a barrier to some of us, but I appreciate that one edit here doesn't make you a notable enough person. I have no objection to being a name to drop, Bill, if you think it'll do you any good. Would this be a membership for you specifically, or for ISFDB in general? If the latter, there might be a limit to the number of people who could access the SFWA pages, but I dunno. Who in the board of directors have you talked to about this previously? I would expect it to be limited to a handful of people here, that would use it wisely and not abuse it. Interested Moderators only maybe? (From looking at many past SFWA publications, I appreciate that there is a lot of info not for general distribution.) Maybe just me to start with, if nobody else wants or needs to use it. And if we can use you to pass on messages/questions then maybe we don't need it at all. I can't recall who I've mentioned it to before - i think I've asked generally here if anybody is a member, I may have mentioned it on my "ISFDB" Livejournal, where dozens of "friends" are undoubtedly members, but I don't recall any comments. I'd like to add reviews of the anthologies detailed in, what I assume is your own book, Anthopology 101.
