Linking uploaded images to the publication record

Thanks for uploading cover images to the ISFDB wiki. The next step is to link those images to the records of the books for which these are the covers. As the instructions (step 6) explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. You have the option to replace an image file hosted by Amazon. If the image is correct there's no pressing need to change it. Just stay with the ISFDB standards: no files larger than 150 kb, no images larger than 600 pixels. Be sure to update the record giving the URL of uploaded file. Publication series vs. Title series

I accepted the submission updating this record but remove the data you'd placed in the Publication Series field. Honor Harrington is a Title Series, and you can see it has already been added to the title record. Creating a new line in the Note field of a publication record

A simple keyboard "enter" stroke will not be displayed. All of the lines will appear to run on. You must create a hard break by entering <br> when you want to start a new line in the Note field. Victor Appleton submissions

Thanks for adding these items! However, there are some things not clear: with two submissions you tried to modify existing publication records, changing the page count and price. I had the impression that these two were also part of the boxed set you added with the two preceding submissions. Is that right? In every case could you please report what is stated on the copyright pages of the books regarding statements of edition and printing: a different page count and/or price may very well be indication of another (perhaps later) publication. For this reason, I have put this two submissions on hold.

The other submissions had to be modified: please don't add any comments or suffixes to an author's/artist's name. The software automatically puts this on display on the author's summary page, but if there's an addition, a new author is generated: 'Artist (Illustration)', which in addition isn't a meaningful name. Also, we only credit the artist who has created the art, so I dropped the designer for the respective publications and also the suffix ' (Illustration)'. But thank you very much for contributing! The title 'The Alien Probe' IS a part of the boxed set. The set includes the first three (3) titles of the series, 1 - The City In The Stars ISBN 0-671-41115-2, 2 - Terror On The Moons Of Jupiter ISBN 0-671-41183-7, and 3 - The Alien Probe ISBN 0-671-42578-1. All the books I have of the series are Trade Paperbacks, are numbered at the top of the spine and in the upper right corner of the front cover. ISBN is located in the lower left of back cover with a code number/price in the lower right, 061-265-$2.75 for all three books in the boxed set. Copyright is 1981 by Stratemeyer Syndicate on all three. Published by WANDERER BOOKS, A Simon & Schuster Division of Gulf & Western Corporation. Manufactured in The United States of America. Next line is a string of numbers - 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 . Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication Data, Appleton, Victor, pseud., The city in the stars, (Tom Swift: I). SUMMARY: Despite attempts to sabotage his newly invented fusion drive spacecraft, a young scientist investigates the sinister, eminent headof the space colony who is hiding serious flaws in his own new craft. In the light of your additional information it seems reasonable to change the date of the publication of 'The Alien Probe' to 'unknown' as for the other two volumes in the boxed set, doesn't it? I have rejected your submission for a publication change and added instead a new publication based on your information. I also added information to the other volumes of the box. Please take a look if they are correct now (and primary verify 'The Alien Probe' if you like to).
For War in Outer Space there still remains the possibility of a different edition/printing: you mention in the notes 'Price of $2.50 printed in upper left of back cover' which seems a significant difference to the price of $3.80 we have stated at the moment. Are both prices stated, and is there any indication of a different edition/printing? I have your submission still on hold for this reason. No problem on the time. The info above is all that I have on The Alien Probe. All three books in the gift set are identical except title, summary and cataloging info. The 'unknown' date may be the best solution.

The war in outer space info is the same except that the line of numbers includes a 1 - 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 . Apparently this could be an earlier printing, hence the lower price. I have rechecked several times and the only date stated in any of the 5 books I have is a copyright date of 1981. I would love to have more info, but I can't give what I do not have. Sorry. SFBC ed. of The Foundation Trilogy

I accepted the submission updating this record and added the note concerning the ID number on the back flap of the dustjacket. Any information entered into the "Note to Moderator" field disappears upon acceptance. So enter data about the publication in the "Note" field. Enter data about the submission in the "Note to Moderator" field. A question: you say the gutter code was on page 22 so I assumed it was a mistake and removed it from the record. Please check again and update the record. Because each of the novels are separately paginated, you should specify the novel (probably the last) and the page number on which the gutter code appears. Foundation and Earth

I'm somewhat puzzled. In the "Note to Moderator" of the submission to update this record, you say that the cover is not the same, even though before the submission there was no cover image linked to the record. Is the image you linked to the record the same as your copy of the book? (The image you uploaded is extremely small. Is it from your own scan or was the file taken from another website?) Thanks. Also, you updated the same record twice, before the first submission was accepted. If I accept the second submission, it will remove all of the data you added in the Note field of the first submission. I'll have to reject the second submission, and then I'll go back and add the new note to the record. Remember to wait between submissions to update the same record. The first one must be accepted before making any further submissions.

BTW, refrain from using words like "I" and "my" in a record's note field, and make it as objective as possible. I will reword the note "Everything I can find indicates it is actually 5th in the series." The reason for this is because users of the database have no idea who you (or me) are, or even care. Thanks. Way too big!

I misunderstood that you knew the size limitations when I commented about the smallness of this image. I didn't intend for you to upload such a large file that greatly exceeds the ISFDB standards. Sorry.

Images of the full dustjacket

It's not a good idea to post the entire dust jacket unless it entirely consists of wraparound art (an example). Our claim of "fair use" to posting such images of cover art wouldn't protect us in the case of images that contain possibly copyrighted text. And besides, the effort really doesn't add much value to the record. (Don't bother to change this current upload but consider it for future ones.) Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:55, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Page count

If you're doing a primary verification of a non-verified record, please feel free to correct the page count field if it doesn't match your copy of the book. Most of the SFBC data comes from secondary sources which usually counts the total number of pages in the book (including all pages before page 1), using a different method than the one we use. That is totally wild! I searched by ISBN, title AND author and all that turned up were 2 TP editions. Either me or this computer is screwy... Sorry to waste your time again. 98Nascar 21:34, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
Not at all. Since the SFBC edition retains the ISBN of the retail edition, that would not have come up on a search. But a search for "demolished man" under "Fiction Titles" would have brought up only one NOVEL record here. Looking down the list of publications, you would have to be looking for "SFBC" and there have been five SFBC editions. (That's very unusual for a title, but this is a classic!) And you would have found that the last one reprinted the 1996 Vintage edition. Your submission gave the retail edition's ISBN in the ISBN field, and we don't do that for SFBC editions. If the SFBC edition has an SFBC-assigned ISBN, that is, it's an original publication of the SFBC, then we would put their ISBN in the ISBN field. Otherwise we use the SFBC ID number in the ISBN field for reprints of other publisher's editions. It can be rather complicated for a new editor, but you're catching on a lot faster than the average new editor, since you're updating a lot of SFBC editions. (Some people frown on SFBC editions, but personally I think they do a good job, and I've been a member on-and-off for almost 40 years!) Wonderful. Then you may be the one who'll be able to fill in the gaps of the missing gutter codes. If you look at lists of the club selections from 1959 through 1987, you'll see there's a column for gutter codes. Even though we've done a good job, there are still a few which are missing. Re this record: When data is entered into an ISFDB record's field which is not stated in the actual publication, you must give the source for that data in the "Note" field, not the "Note to Moderator" field (that disappears the second the submission is accepted). So just note something like: "Price from the primary verifier's personal records." Yes, they appear to be the same as best I can tell. The only discrepancy I see is that this book says 'Illustration by Stephen Hickman' on the cover flap, but 'Cover art by Gary Ruddell' on the copyright page. Any thoughts?98Nascar 22:46, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Changing verified publication records

Hi. If you want to make changes to publication records listing one or more primary verifiers, ISFDB practice/etiquette is to notify at least the Primary Verifier on the verifier's talk page (or following any special instructions you find there). If you are adding something, it's usually ok to submit the addition and notify at the same time. If you are altering something, you should ask the verifier before making the submission, as sometimes differences can be due to different printings.

If a moderator sees a submission involving a record with a Primary Verifier and does not see a notification or discussion (which you can mention in the notes to the moderator, to save the moderators time), you will get questioned or warned.

Just something to keep in mind for future submissions. I was Primary Verifier on one, and I will drop a note to the Primary Verifier on the other. Thanks. --MartyD 21:40, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Alien Landscapes

Concerning your submission to update this record: it would be a good idea to discuss this with the other primary verifier. It's possible that their copy also has the same situation concerning the ISBN, thus not anomalous. I have accepted the submission, but will adjust the note. I'll also fix the HTML. BTW, if you're certain that your copy was purchased from the SFBC, perhaps you should check it against this record for the SFBC edition. Mhhutchins 17:57, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Using HTML in the Note field

If you'll look at this record, you'll notice that the second line of the Note field has a bullet which lines up with the other data fields. This is caused by improperly formatted HTML to create a new line. (Do an edit update of the record to see the raw data.) If you're unfamiliar with using HTML, here's a tutorial. If that seems too complicated, and it can be when you use the LI function to display bulleted notes, it's better to just use the HTML line break (<BR>) to start a new line in the Note field. Thanks. Gutter codes

When adding gutter codes to SFBC (or Doubleday and its various clubs) printings, it's a good idea to enter them on the same line (if there is one) giving the other codes, or create a new one immediately after it. Either way, so that they're close together. It's not a standard or stated policy, but it's just easier for the user. I've moved the one you added to this record. Thanks. SFBC ed. of Best from F&SF 16th

Re this publication: If your copy has the "Book Club Edition" statement and no price on the front flap of the dustjacket, the ID number on the back flap, and no edition statement on the title page, remove the note about it possibly being the trade edition. Debt of Bones

Can you confirm that there is a printed price in US dollars on your copy of this title? We have a record for the UK publication with the same ISBN, but this edition was imported to the US by Sterling (according to OCLC), and they may have put a stickered US price over the UK price. Price stated is printed at top of the front flap - US$17.95 under that CAN$27.95. There is also a line on the copyright page that says 'Manufactured in the United States of America'. ISBN 0 575 072563 on copyright page and 0-575-07256-3 on back of dust jacket.98Nascar 23:44, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

The date was loaded into my database when I synced with the Clz (Collectorz) database. Source to there is unknown. Date given from that source is 2001-12-00. May well be best to zero it out, as I not sure where they get their info.98Nascar 00:17, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Are you certain this was a selection of the SFBC? It's not listed among the monthly selections for 1973 or 1974. Perhaps you kept the book club announcement flyer offering this title as a selection? If it can't be determined, the publisher should be changed to "Delacorte Press / BCE".

Also, we can estimate publication date of Doubleday printed books by adding six weeks to the gutter code. So you can give the date as 1974-08-00, and give the gutter code as the source for the estimated publication date in the Note field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:41, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Can you confirm the ID#? That number falls in the summer of 1973, and the retail edition wasn't published until October 1973. Thanks for checking.
Your copy may not be from the first book club printing. Back then, the BCE would normally appear about 6 months after the retail edition. And I found an Abebooks.com dealer whose copy has a gutter code of "23Q" (June 1974), but even that may not be the first printing. Mhhutchins 17:53, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
I didn't know that I said that it was a selection. It IS from a club though. No, I don't have the announcement flyer. There is a slim possibility that it came from the Book of the Month club. My wife belonged to it for a short period, but I don't remember (nor does she) ordering very many books from them nor which ones (Most of her books are the 'romance' type). By entering "SFBC" in the publisher field, you are indicating that it was a selection of Doubleday's SFBC. (It doesn't have to be one of the Main Selections to be a selection, because they occasionally offered alternate selections, which didn't come to you automatically.) Only SFBC selections should be given this designation. If you're not certain, then use "BCE". It is not likely to have been a selection of the BOMC, because back then a title was exclusive to either Doubleday or BOMC, and never both (at the same time). Doubleday could offer a title as a selection to several of its clubs simultaneously: Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club, Crime Club, Fireside Theater Club, etc. That ID number is troublesome, but its possible that they could have misprinted it. Between 1968 and 1974, the ID numbers were reliably chronological. But in 1975, they started all over again, and it was in order for awhile before it went crazy. It wasn't until Bertelsmann bought them in 1986 did a new ID system go into effect which was more consistent. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:29, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

You can update the publication record's title field to match the title given on the book's title page. Do not change the title field of the title record. The title of a work doesn't necessarily have to match the title of the publication. We usually don't give series data in the title of the work (the title record) because there's a separate field for that. Mhhutchins 22:40, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Sun-Cross

How is the publisher credited on the title page of this publication? Locus1 can not be used to determine the publisher credit because they give all SFBC editions as just "SFBC" without stating how the publisher is credited in the book. So when an editor is doing a Locus1 verification for a SFBC edition, he can't know how the book is actually credited. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:35, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Credited as Published by arrangement with 'Del Rey / Balantine Books' on the copyright page. Confusion may have arisen from that and the fact that at the bottom of the title page (Page before the copyright page.) it say 'Guild America Books'. Could go either way I guess, any thoughts? Title page credit trumps copyright page. (You'll note I asked how the publisher is credited on the title page.) This is especially the case when there's a "by arrangement" statement which means it was NOT actually published by the original publisher. Is GuildAmerica credited on the spine as well? GuildAmerica Books (the first is a hump-back word) was created by Bertelsmann in 1987 when they purchased Doubleday. It replaced the Nelson Doubleday imprint which Doubleday used for publications which are only available to their club subscribers. Science Fiction Book Club became a separate imprint for SFBC original books when Bertelsmann merged its book clubs with the Book-of-the-Month Club to create Bookspan, now the only major US non-retail distributor of mail-order books using the "club" paradigm. Replacing a cover image linked to a publication record

Re this record: If you use the link ("Upload new cover scan") that's part of the publication record, the file is automatically replaced without having to manipulate the file name or change the URL to the new file. You'll get a warning that a file with the same name already exists on the server. Just click on the button that says "Save File" and "Ignore warning and save file anyway." That way the file is replaced with the new image and you don't have to do a follow-up submission to change the link to the address of the new file. Thanks. Mhhutchins

Nope. Image file uploads are not moderated. If you use the link from the pub as I suggest and choose to replace it, the file is changed and the new image is visible on the publication record, without a moderator intervening. Well, SHAW! I must be doing something wrong then. I sent up a new image for 'The Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted', when I clicked on the link, it opened another tab in my browser. Did the upload and everything looked good, saved the file ect. Went back to check another record, then called the Rat back up, but it still had the original image. BTW, if you were replacing an existing file, I'd tell you to clean your cache. If the file is already stored in your browser it would not replace it with a new one with the same URL (the ISFDB server isn't "self-restoring", you have to manually clean you browser's cache by hitting "F5", or in some browsers hitting the reload button.) Titles are to be listed as given on the title page; not the table of contents. If a title page contains a subtitle, then it is entered separated by a colon from the main title. I have changed the publication to show the titles per their respective title pages based on your answer. Please double check them to make sure I interpreted you correctly.

I have accepted your change to The Elric Saga, Part II. With respect to your statement in the notes to moderator field where you said:

"Title changed to reflect title page of book which shows 'THE ELRIC SAGA' over 'Part Two'. shown as Part II on jacket and spine of book. Change title to suit, could go either way."

No, it cannot go either way. We use the credit per the title page. How the title page lists it is how it should be entered in the database. If there is a difference between the title page and cover, then it's appropriate to add a publication note. I have added such a note based on the above quote.

In addition, if a publication is based on a secondary source and you update it based on the actual book, you should remove the statement regarding the secondary source (unless the secondary source is for information that is not present on the actual publication). As such, I removed the "Info from Locus1." note. If any info (such as price) isn't on the publication, then please add back but specifically state which information is from Locus.

I also suggest not mixing lists and line breaks. Only one format should be used else it looks pretty bad. I switched it all to a list. You may wish to review Help:Using HTML in Note Fields.

No problem. I uploaded the first ones like you said and did NOT update the url via the 'edit pub' page. Turned out that it didn't replace some of the Amazon images, and I couldn't figure out how to get the location back without uploading them again. Apparently the system will replace only some of the Amazon images without having to edit the pub to update the url.98Nascar 21:20, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
The system doesn't replace the links to Amazon images at all. That is done manually by an editor. If you upload a cover image file to the ISFDB server, you have to update the publication record to replace the Amazon link with the URL of the file you just uploaded. SFBC ed. of Way Station

Re this record: the five-digit ID number indicates it was printed after July 1985, so the "Qnn" gutter code range has to be the one in 1985 and not 1975. This edition was a selection of the SFBC in October 1985. The gutter code in your copy indicates that it was printed in October 1986. So your copy must be a reprint. Yup, I been a member since early 1970. I don't get the paper catalog anymore. Went to the e-mail thing for the featured selections. Kinda regret it at times, and there is not a GOOD way to 'browse' books online since they went to the 'upgraded' site. Have complained about the site, but it didn't do any good. They did reply and offered to get me back on the list to get a paper catalog, though I haven't replied yet. Maybe I should get back on the mailing list and see what happens.
I don't buy too many books from them anymore though. For many years they did a great job, but between the price increases on the books and the shipping charges, I can usually get a trade copy at B&N. Got a local used book store where I get many books for CHEAP. If I'm not in a big rush to read it, I'll add it to my list and get it there for $3-7 each. Most of the books I get there are in all but new condition, a few of the really old ones in fair to good condition.98Nascar 17:43, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
After being a member off and on since 1975, I rejoined again about five years ago just to get the catalog so that I can maintain the SFBC listings here on the ISFDB. Now I can't even do that. I only buy their original publications, because as you said, the retail editions are just as cheap from online dealers. Even though I get (or got) the mail catalog, I would respond to the "Featured Selections" on their website, but haven't had to do that since December because there haven't been any. (Have you had to respond to featured selections lately?) I was looking at the SFBC Facebook page, and in between all of the authors trying to promote their books, there are tons of complaints from members, or wannabe members, about ordering through the website. They "upgraded" it about the same time I started having problems with their mailings. And things have gone downhill from there. I suspect this may be the end of the SFBC. Strange, I get the emails quite regularly. I don't keep them after responding, so I can't give dates, I I've gotten one within the last 1-2 weeks for 'Please Reply To Your Featured Selections'. I've also found the 'Winter Featured Selections' on he site the last time I wet to respond to the regular selections. I never got any notice about that one at all. Seems strange to think of them possibly going under after them being a part of my life for so long. I have also noticed another thing that isn't helping, and that is the ebooks. I had to get a Nook to read one book in a series (Sword of Truth but Terry Goodkind) as he self published it in the format ONLY. Bad part is, is that I really like reading on the Nook. I can read in the dark and not bother anyone (Read wife) with a light on. The good books are not that much cheaper in the ebook format than the regular books, so I can't see it replacing books altogether for quite some time down the road. There are MANY free ones available though, some great reads, but could use a bit of spell checking a grammer correction, but good stories none the less. A War of Gifts

I added a note about the formatting of the ISBN to your verified A War of Gifts. The main issue is that ISFDB formats Tor ISBNs as 0-765-31282-4 as that's how Tor formatted it from 1981 to 2007. I expanded the notes for Prelude to Mars. There's an item may be able to shed light on should you return to ISFDB and still have the publication. There was a note "Gutter code '24S' on page 497 indicates a June 1976 printing date." If you have the '24S' publication then please double-check the back flap and back cover for an SFBC number. If there's no number then we should update the notes. The lack of a number on a 1976 publication seems strange.
