Notes to Self
- This first note is for you. :-) If you have any Locus issues from 1969 to 1976 then I'd love to hear from you as we are missing a lot of data from this time period. At this point I'm mainly looking for the Issue # and date pairs plus the Vol. # and "No." # if they are visible. Thank you. ~Marc
- Something to look into is to use the issue # in the publication key. The standard magazine key is CODEmmmYYYY where CODE is a prefix assigned to the magazine, mmm is the month, and YYYY (sometimes it's just YY) is the year. This works fine for Locus except from 1968 to 1976 when the magazine was published irregularly leading to a CODEmmmdddyyyy format to add the day of the month which looks a little messy.
- I'm not happy with the columns not lining up as I was trying out columns based on the "No." number as in Vol 10., No 3. An experiment is to use a two or three line cell format that would have the issue # and/or the "No." # in each cell. The goal is to show that Locus sometimes skipped a month but that the sequence numbering remained continuous or in 1979 where July's issue must have been very late (probably because of Westercon) and it's called "Jul./Aug." but they then came out with "Aug" after that. Maybe I should not worry about this as the publication record will show the Issue/Vol/No numbering and someone curious about a gap/skip in the table can just look at the publications surrounding a skip to see that the numbering was continuous.
- The contents for issues from January-1984 to December 1998 to present are available on LocusMag.com
- Follow up with Ted Serrill listings - Amazon and AbeBooks.
- Follow-up on "art issue" from 1970 that's listed on Abebooks.

1989 to 2007
Locus magazine was published bi-weekly from 1968 through 1976 and monthly starting in 1977. In 1989 Locus switched their numbering from one volume of 12 issues per year to two volumes of six issues per year and continues to use this numbering system.
The tables below are color coded with the following
White - No publication data entered into ISFDB Yellow - Marc Kupper is missing this issue (I have issue #191 to present and am missing the indicated issues) Light pink - Stub publication record with few or no contents entries Aqua - Publication data entered into ISFDB Lime - Publication has been verified
1977 to 1988
From 1977 to 1988 Locus was published monthly with one volume of 10 to 12 issues per year. Note that the issues within a volume are numbered from 1 to 10, 11, or 12 depending on the year. For readability, the table below is organized so that the months line up in columns to better show where there were gaps. This means that in years with less than 12 issues the numbering within a volume will not match the column header in the table.
1968 to 1976
From 1968 through 1976 Locus was usually published bi-weekly though sometimes there were 1 to 4 weeks between issues. Please note that at present the table below is messy as there's not a lot of data available on the issues. The table only lists those issues where the issue # and date are known plus those issue #s that can be determined from the gaps between known issues.
Note that at the end of 1970 there were two issues, one numbered #70 and the other #70* (with the asterisk).
- Issue #70 is dated December 29, 1970 with 800 copies.
- Issue #70* is also dated December 29, 1970 with 80 copies, is titled "Locus 1970 Art Issue", and contains drawings by Alicia Austin, George Barr, Jack Gaughan, Tim Kirk and others. It also contains a listing/index of all the issues for 1970.
The table shows volume numbers for each year. This is for organizational purposes as Locus did not always use volume numbers.
- AbeBooks seller listing for Issue #1, Vol. 1, No. 1.
- Seller with cover image for issue #65 (October 20, 1970) where no Vol/No is visible. This should be Vol. 3.
- Seller confirms that issue #144 (Jun. 22, 1973) does not have a volume #. This should be Vol. 6.
- Seller confirms that issue #156 (Mar. 15, 1974) does not have a volume #. This should be Vol. 7.

Acknowledgments
Many people have helped in putting together this index.
- Gail Futoran for providing copies of nearly all issues from late 1976 through 2006.
- Ted Serrill, an individual supplementing his retirement by selling off his old specfict collection, who has answered many questions about the Locus issues he has. See his listings at Amazon and AbeBooks.
- Erik Arthur of Fantasy Centre in the UK for his help with the Locus 1970 Art issue (issue #70*). This looks like a "must see" book store for those in the London area. They also sell books via AbeBooks but it's cheaper to get them direct.
