Revision as of 22:24, 24 December 2007

The "B" is for "Bill".

I have another account here "BillLongley" that I used during some strange blocking events. Those were mostly during my early days here, and no doubt anything done by "BillLongley" could be improved, so feel free to point out my newbie mistakes. (You'll find some under THIS name too, and don't be afraid to question those either.) At some point I'll probably review all the "BillLongley" verifications and switch them to this ID - probably to get to the 2,000 Verifications point. (Yes, I know many other editors have far vaster collections, but until they start verifying them all this is one of the few targets I can aim for!)

I consider myself fairly expert on Terry Pratchett, Spider Robinson, James Blish and (reluctantly, after I heard of "fix-up" novels) A. E. van Vogt: currently I'm learning Ron Goulart (from the Josh Kirby associations), Jack Williamson and Brian Stableford: and Buffy/X-Files/Star Trek/Doctor Who series as they're just so cheaply available at car-boot sales and suchlike. (This is why I verify so many copies of the same book at times - 10p or 20p to upgrade a book from a reading copy to a good one to a pristine one is irresistible!)

I like to question a lot of ISFDB standards, and get a bit disappointed when such discussions peter out with no resolution. I upload a lot of cover images to Amazon, but wish they were here instead, for instance.

I occasionally stumble over a British SF Magazine and venture into those Dark Areas, but you'd be better off talking to other Mods about magazines. Mostly. Unless it's the British edition. Then it's only "Probably". I've done one entire series single-handed and I'll probably do "[SF] Impulse" at some point too.

And I now have a large collection of "Stuff" that is either interesting, daunting, or a fire-risk: see below.

Corgi

Prefix 0552 from 1968-2005. Although we also have a couple of 'Black Swan' pubs with "055299" prefixes, this is a pretty reliable check (over 200 good pubs verified).

Fontana Books

000613	1975-1979 (I have none of this range)
000614	1977-1980
000615	1979-1980
000616	1980-1991 (I have none of this range)
000617	1986-1993

Coronet

Mostly covered by these prefixes, although these may also be credited to Hodder & Stoughton:

03400	1972-1981
03401	1972-1982
03402	1976-1982
03403	1984

Arrow / Legend

Arrow is usually 0099 prefix, but this also covers the Legend imprint. It also covers Mysterious Press which is/was an imprint of Arrow Books, and Red Fox and Vintage: but these are unlikely to be SF.

Sidgwick & Jackson

0283 prefix: although this may be also used for paperback publications in association with the New English library.

Star

03523 1975-1989 May be credited as "W. H. Allen-Star".

Magnum

04170 Prefix, 1977-1981

Unwin / Unicorn

Not many SF authors, Tolkien being the most notable, but has handled Tanith Lee, Robert Holdstock, M. John Harrison and Guy Gavriel Kay. Prefixes 004440 and 004823. More likely to publish SF under the "Unicorn" imprint.

NEL (New English Library)

Also covers Souvenir Press and Four Square imprints, but these are likely to be pre-ISBN.

02839	1976-1982
03406	1994-1999
03407	1999-2004
03408	2004
04500	1969-1997
04503	1986-1993
04504	1987-1990
04505	1989-1994
04506	1994-1995

0340 overlaps with Hodder: 02839 with Sidgwick & Jackson: 0450 is pretty clear though.

Penguin, Puffin, Peacock, Roc

Gets complicated with Roc imprint:

04514	Penguin/Roc	1990-2007

Pan

0330 Prefix 1967-2006. Now includes 03304 Picador, and Pan Macmillan begins to really mess things up.

Piccolo

Children's book imprint of Pan.

03302 1973-1985

Methuen

04131	1987-1988
04133	1975-1976

Faber and Faber

0571 prefix.

Gollancz / VGSF / Orion / Millennium

This prefix may also be credited to Granada from 1978-1984, or Grafton from 1985-1988.

Mandarin

An imprint of Octopus UK, whoever they are.

074930	1989-1993
074931	1992-1995

Colin Smythe

Only two books here so far: original publisher of Terry Pratchett. Prefix 086140

Titan

Reprinted a lot of Star Trek Pocket books.

185286	1987-1993

Panther Books

ISBN Ranges from all verified books:

058601	1970-1983

058604	1974-1985
058605	1980-1985
058606	1984-1986

Note: These prefixes were also used by Granada 1973-1986. The 0586 prefix was also used by Grafton, HarperCollins, HarperCollins Voyager, Paladin and Triad, who also used the 058607-058600 ranges Panther and Granada didn't.

Granada also used prefixes:

Recent Acquisitions

The Brian Stableford collection is going to take some time to go through. If you see anything especially of interest here, let me know. I'm just going to record what there is for now, and what my future intentions for it are. BLongley 14:06, 14 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Just to make it clear: Knud Lam has expressed an interest in preserving the ENTIRE physical collection, I think: I have no Danish language skills and it seems my English isn't that clear to Danes either, as I have had to apologize several times over about my perceived intentions. I'm currently keeping these items and the other boxes/bags stored, and many items are of ISFDB interest. If anyone is interested in entering the ISFDB-relevant data, then I'm happy to let you borrow the items, on the understanding that Knud wants the physical copies eventually. Knud seems happy to allow researchers access to the physical editions, but he has a ten-year backlog of work already and I don't want to put the burden of data-entry on him alone!
