===Aggregate Library Catalogs and Search Engines===
 +
* WorldCat is a collection of 200+ million searchable bibliographic records maintained by the OCLC inter-library cooperative.  Covers books, serials, music, films and some other types of holdings. OCLC is in the process of linking individual editions to present a Summary/Detail view of the catalog similar to the ISFDB's Title/Publication view, but it's a work in progress. You can access the data in this catalog in the following ways:
 +
{{Worldcat Access links}}
 +
:See [[Help:Using Worldcat data]] for more details and warnings.
 +
* [http://www.sigla.ru Sigla] Searches 1600 library catalogs, click on the British flag icon for the English language version. Use the <nowiki>{{Sigla}}</nowiki> template when referring to this source within the ISFDB Wiki.
 +
* [http://explore.bl.uk/ British Library Integrated Catalogue] Searches the combined holdings of the British library. A very good source for UK publications, and may be helpful on any publication. The "system number" is a unique identifier for a particular record, similar to the OCLC accession number. May be abbreviated as "BLIC". Often lists cover prices on books that have ISBNs -- rarely if ever on older books.
 +
* [http://copac.ac.uk/ COPAC], combined catalog of numerous UK/Irish libraries.
 +
* [http://openlibrary.org/about Open Library] is an open source project sponsored by the Internet Archive. Their stated goal is to have "One web page for every book ever published." They can be searched by ISBN or by title, author, Publisher and other fields. Once a book is found it can be linked to by ISBN, or by the OL's internal ID. Like the ISFDB, the OL depends on volunteer labor and freely available data.

Revision as of 06:09, 2 January 2023

For an overview of the sources used by the ISFDB in 1994-2004 see Reference:General Overview.

This page lists resources that ISFDB editors can use to verify bibliographic data. Note that this list is not intended to be all-inclusive. If you find yourself regularly using a resource that is not listed here, please feel free to add it to the page.

Web Bibliographies

Aggregate Library Catalogs and Search Engines

  • WorldCat is a collection of 200+ million searchable bibliographic records maintained by the OCLC inter-library cooperative. Covers books, serials, music, films and some other types of holdings. OCLC is in the process of linking individual editions to present a Summary/Detail view of the catalog similar to the ISFDB's Title/Publication view, but it's a work in progress. You can access the data in this catalog in the following ways:
    • Public WorldCat interface is a Web interface available for free since August 2006. Use the {{OCLC}} template when referring to this source in ISFDB note fields and within the ISFDB Wiki.
    • OCLC Fiction Finder provides access to all fiction cataloged by OCLC, including shrunk cover scans when available.
    • WorldCat genres lets users browse WorldCat data by genre, e.g. science fiction or cyberpunk.
    • The xISBN Web service allows developers to submit an ISBN and retrieve a list of related ISBNs along with their basic bibliographic data.
    • OCLC FirstSearch is another Web interface limited to subscribers.
See Help:Using Worldcat data for more details and warnings.
  • Sigla Searches 1600 library catalogs, click on the British flag icon for the English language version. Use the {{Sigla}} template when referring to this source within the ISFDB Wiki.
  • British Library Integrated Catalogue Searches the combined holdings of the British library. A very good source for UK publications, and may be helpful on any publication. The "system number" is a unique identifier for a particular record, similar to the OCLC accession number. May be abbreviated as "BLIC". Often lists cover prices on books that have ISBNs -- rarely if ever on older books.
  • COPAC, combined catalog of numerous UK/Irish libraries.
  • Open Library is an open source project sponsored by the Internet Archive.
  • Search engine for the US Social Security Death Index

Individual Library catalogs

  • Library of Congress Online Catalog. Use the {{LOC}} template when referring to this source within the ISFDB Wiki.
  • UC Library Search is the University of California’s new unified discovery and borrowing system that streamlines your search for UC Library collections, replacing Roger and Melvyl.
