Macmillan was founded in 1843 by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Scottish Isle of Arran. In its early days it published such authors as Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry James, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling and H. G. Wells.
An ambitious expansion programme was initiated in the late 1960s when Harold Macmillan retired from politics after his term as prime minister and became chairman of the company. The group now covers over 70 countries with imprints such as Pan Macmillan, Pan, Picador, Boxtree, Sidgwick & Jackson, Tor, Macmillan Children's Books, Young Picador.
