The retail/trade and book club editions are very similar but are also different than what Contento documented for From the Ocean, from the Stars. As a result, here is a detailed description to help spot if there is a another edition that matches what Contento described.

Page: (page numbers in [brackets] do not state the page number. The numbering shown here was derived by counting backwards or forwards from numbered pages)

  • [i] - Half title page that states "* From the Ocean, From the Stars".
  • [ii] - blank.
  • [iii] - Title page for From the Ocean, From the Stars. See below for a detailed description.
  • [iv] - Copyright page.
    • The retail/trade copyright page has xxx (detail unknown) but is known to state "LCCN# 62-8058" and "First Edition".
    • The Book Club Edition copyright page has a ten-line block of story copyrights, a three line paragraph with the "All rights reserved" notice, and finally one line with "Printed in the Unites States of America". There is no LCCN nor "First Edition" statement.
  • [v] - Dedication that states "To Frances and Denver".
  • [vi] - blank.
  • [vii] - Table of contents from introduction ix to The Star 276.
  • viii - Table of contents from Out of the Sun 282 to III The City and the Stars 321.
  • [ix] - Introduction which is continued on the next page.
  • x - Continuation of the Introduction which also continues on to the following page.
  • xi - Last page of the Introduction and is signed "Colombo 1961" on the left side of the page (split over two lines) and "Arthur C. Clarke" on the right side of the page.
  • [xiii] - blank.
  • [1] - Title page that states "* The Deep Range".
  • [2] - blank.
  • [3] - Start of "Part 1 • The Apprentice * Chapter One" followed by text.
  • 4 - Continuation of The Deep Range text.
  • 5 to 165 - text. The page banner on the left (even) pages are From the Ocean, From the Stars and the banners for the right (odd) pages are The Deep Range.
  • [166] blank.
  • [167] Title page for The Other Side of the Sky.
  • [168] blank.
  • [169] to 175 Text of The Nine Billion Names of God.
  • <snip>
  • 515 Last page of text of The City and the Stars. There is a "C48" gutter code in the lower-left corner.
  • [516] blank.

The differences between the verified publications and what Contento recorded are:

  • Contento dates this 1961. The source for this is unknown but may be the date on the introduction. The sources for a 1962 publication date are
  • Contento reports that there is "Bibliographical Note · in" between The Other Side of the Sky and The Nine Billion Names of God. See above where the The Other Side of the Sky title page is on page 167 and there is no introduction before The Nine Billion Names of God. It's likely that Contento saw the statement on the title page "An omnibus containing the complete novels The Deep Range and The City and the Stars and twenty-four short stories by Arthur C. Clarke" and based on that used his entire database record for The Other Side of the Sky and did not notice that the introduction had been included in this omnibus.
