William Jesse Corbett was born in Birmingham, England in 1938. He attended Billesley Secondary School, Birmingham from 1942 - 1953. Corbett joined the Merchant Navy as a galley-boy when he was sixteen, worked as a factory hand, furniture remover, building site labourer, and dishwasher. He was also a physical training instructor in the British Army. While learning to type, he wrote his first book, "The Song of Pentecost", which won the Whitbread Award and which Roald Dahl described as an "astonishing achievement".^[1]
