Born Robert H. Rohrer Jr. in Savannah, Ga., on January 31, 1946. Graduated from Druid Hills High School in DeKalb County, Ga., in 1964. Graduated with a B.A. in English from Emory University in 1967. Graduate assistant in English at the State University of New York at Buffalo for two semesters, 1967-68. Intern at The Atlanta Constitution, June-September 1968.
