A product of an ethnically diverse family with Latino roots, David Bowles has lived most of his life in the Río Grande Valley of south Texas, where he teaches at the University of Texas. Recipient of awards from the Texas Institute of Letters and Texas Associated Press, he has written several books, among them ''Flower, Song, Dance: Aztec and Mayan Poetry'', ''The Smoking Mirror'' and ''Border Lore''.
