Stanley Rinehart, Jr., who co-founded Farrar & Rinehart in 1929, announced late in May 1930 the publication of new novels at $1.00, sometimes called dollar books, dollar fiction, or dollar novels. The experiment was inaugurated 1930-06-06 with Murder in Paris by Alice Campbell (LCCN: 30-15103 and OCLC: 1963635; UK title, Spiderweb). A few other publishers followed, most notably Doubleday, Doran with a list of 20 two weeks later.

Campbell wrote primarily in the crime, mystery, suspense field(s), as did Rinehart's mother Mary Roberts Rinehart.
