Robert Rohrer was born Robert H. Rohrer Jr. in Savannah, Georgia (USA) on January 31, 1946. He graduated from Druid Hills High School in DeKalb County, Georgia in 1964. He graduated from Emory University with a B.A. in English in 1967. He worked as a graduate assistant in English at the State University of New York at Buffalo for two semesters during 1967-68.

Rohrer worked as an intern at The Atlanta Constitution during 1968. He continued to work at The Constitution (later The Atlanta Journal-Constitution) as General assignment reporter (1968-72), Assistant City Editor (1972-1988), news summary editor (1988-2007), and worked on the AJC's calendar desk during 2007.

Rohrer retired from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution August 2007
