Welcome!

Hello, Lotsawatts, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --~ Bill, Bluesman 22:33, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

JHB

Greetings, Jay! Wondered when you would finally visit and fill in some Norton blanks. I'd really like to know where you got the name for the JHB initials! That one has bugged me for quite a while, but just couldn't find a name. --~ Bill, Bluesman 22:52, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Omnibus vs Anthology

Both publications that you want to change to Anthologies are properly classified as Omnibus. All the contents are novels, not short stories. This help page has the definitions/parameters that we use. It's a good page to start with as all the fields are covered. Welcome, again, and thanks for editing. --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:04, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Lamps on the Brow

The "Herne's Lady" title has been corrected. As for quality of construction statement, that does not seem applicable for a bibliographic site. While I can sympathize with the issue, we're not really about critiquing publication quality. If you want, however, you are welcome to start a discussion at the ISFDB:Community Portal‎ to see if there is interest in allowing such statement. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:48, 10 July 2020 (EDT)

Chole und Nackie

Thank you for finding this. I have added a note to the German title and deleted the English title (since it never appeared in English under that title). -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:02, 12 July 2020 (EDT)

Image Uploading

Cover image uploading is a two step process. Once you have uploaded a cover to the wiki, you need to click on the image (so you get just the image), copy that URL, and then edit the publication to add the URL to the publication. So for Image:THBKFNDRND1987.jpg, you need to enter http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/3/32/THBKFNDRND1987.jpg, in The Book of Andre Norton.

If you have a better quality image (keeping in mind to limit the size to 600px on largest side), go to the image page (ex Image:THBKFNDRND1987.jpg) and use the "Upload a new version of this file" at the bottom of the page. It will warn you that are overwriting an existing image, but just go ahead. If someone else uploaded the prior image, edit the image page after uploading and change the name in the source field to your user name. You will not need to re-edit the publication entry as it will already be linked. However, due to a bug with out wiki software, your browser may not show the new image unless you force a cache refresh (typically a shift F5).

Regarding "I have images of titles that have no upload button": I'm not sure what you mean. Can you provide an example?

Also, instead of submitting blank edits with a question, try posting your question at ISFDB:Help desk. If you have follow-on questions to the above, you can just reply here. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:53, 12 July 2020 (EDT)

I think this is where I respond -- "Regarding "I have images of titles that have no upload button": I'm not sure what you mean. Can you provide an example?" It left my brain - so I'm going to have to find it again. I will back to as soon as I find it.

OK - seems I am mistaken for it's the title pages that have no upload button. Lotsawatts 19:06, 14 July 2020 (EDT)

Storms of Victory

Regarding your proposed edits to Storms of Victory:

  • We credit per the title page. Does the story title page specify that "The Chronicler" is by Andre Norton or is that from knowledge outside the book? If the second, we would leave it as uncredited and variant to Andre Norton. When it's a single author book, it is assumed all work is by the author unless otherwise stated. However, this is a dual author book so it is ambiguous (within the book) unless explicitly credited.
  • We title per the title page. We will add disambiguations when there is a common title used in multiple publications (typically Introduction, Foreword, Preface, etc. but we will sometimes do the same for other titles that repeat). When we add a disambiguation, we use the title of the book; not a description. So this should stay "The Chronicler (Storms of Victory)".
  • Are the various "The Chronicler" entries different works or the same content in each of the pubs? If it is actually the same, then there is no need for disambiguation and they should all be merged tohether.
  • We typically don't list fictionally forewords & afterwords that are part of the story. Is there something unique in these cases to list them?

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:53, 14 July 2020 (EDT)

The above also applies to other edits I am holding. Based on the answers here, we can address those as well. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:57, 14 July 2020 (EDT)
