::Thanks for the help. The OCLC record for this ISBN will be changed in the near future as it is incorrect, the title should read ''The Land of Miu''. The two books, ''Cat's Eyes'' and ''The Land of Miu'' show on the author's page, see [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?120745 this profile], but ''The Land of Miu'' is not showing as a book in the series. It is book 1 2nd edition, what should I do to fix this please? [[User:Isis|Isis]] 02:26, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Welcome!

Hello, Isis, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --MartyD 12:48, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Cat's Eyes

Hi, and welcome. Thank you for the Cat's Eyes submission. I accepted it, and a made a few small changes to it to have it conform with our policies and standards (and to fix up a gotcha that catches just about every new contributor):

  • I removed "(Land of Miu, #1)" from the title. Unless the series name is integral to the title, we do not include it in the title, but rather a different way. See the next item.
  • I changed "Land of Miu" from a publisher series (used for a group of publications having unrelated contents, where another publisher would not necessarily use the same grouping -- e.g., "Reprinted Classics" or "Fantasy Library") to a title series. This bites nearly everyone. A title series is for a group of related contents (e.g., the Harry Potter series), as you have here. But providing the title series is done on the title, and when you add a New Publication, the title does not exist until after the publication submission is accepted. So adding the series information is a second step. Unfortunately, because the new publication screen has only one "series" slot, it's natural to try to put the title series information there.

I also made one organizational change. "CHAPTERBOOK" (chapbook) is treated by our system as a sort of mini collection (in this case, of one work). Even though its title is usually the same as the contained work, we add that contained work of short fiction to its contents. I did that. If you look at Karen Lee Field's bibliography, you'll see both the Chapterbook and the Short Fiction (as well as the Land of Miu title series).

Sorry, it's not as complicated as it sounds, and please don't be daunted by these details. Getting the information into the database is the important thing, and moderators are here and happy to help with massaging it into the form the ISFDB wants. Thank you for contributing. --MartyD 12:39, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

100 Stories for Queensland

I hate to ask, after all the effort put into creating this submission, but... are all of these stories speculative fiction? If some of them are, you should only add them to the record with a note about the incompleteness of the record's contents. I've placed it on hold and will wait for your response. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 16:29, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Reply
I haven't read the entire book to be able to say exactly how many are speculative fiction, however, I know not all of them are. I should have asked about this first, I wanted to, but didn't know how to go about doing so. It took me ages to work out how to leave this reply.
I plan to read the book soon, so when I know which stories are speculative fiction how do I enter them onto the database? Do I go through the same process but only add the spec fic stories? And how do I leave the note about incompleteness? And, for future reference, how would I ask a question BEFORE submitting to the database?
Thanks for your time and patience. Isis 23:35, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Sorry about the difficulty in navigating here. It's not very intuitive and, like you, most of us tend to stumble upon the Wiki, but wind up using it for 99% of our communication. You'll find a list of links in the Welcome section above that should be helpful. To ask questions directly to any of the moderators you can post a message on the Help Desk.
I'm going to accept the submission, and ask you, when you get the chance, to remove any stories that you believe have no speculative fiction content (i.e. science fiction, fantasy, horror, slipstream, magic realism, etc.). I'll walk you through that process whenever you do. You can leave a message on my talk page, or the Help desk link I've given above. Thanks for contributing and welcome to the ISFDB. The submission was accepted and here is the publication record. A couple of questions and remarks: Is the price in Australian dollars? If so, it should be entered as "A$19.99". Is the book trade sized (more than 7 inches or 18 cm tall)? If so, the binding field should read as "tp". If not, it should be entered as "pb". A few other things will also need to be changed. You notice a white frame around the Amazon cover image. That can be removed by taking out all characters between the last two periods of the URL: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61-wjo7NHgL._SL500_AA300_.jpg should be entered as http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61-wjo7NHgL.jpg. Also generic titles such as "Introduction" should be disambiguated by adding the title of the book to the title of the essay: "Introduction (100 Stories for Queensland)". Do you want to attempt these changes or should I? Just click on the "Edit This Pub" link and change any applicable fields. Thanks. Mhhutchins 03:33, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for accepting the submission. I will removing the non-speculative fiction stories as soon as I can...and will no doubt need help at that stage so thank you for offering. I will attempt to make the changes you've mentioned as I enjoy fixing things up as much as creating them, besides it's good to learn new things. I will contact you if I run into any problems. Thanks again. Isis 09:43, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Well, that was easy! Just so you know, the price is US dollars, I didn't overlook it. Thanks for your help. Isis 09:50, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
I accepted that submission --those changes you made look good. Thanks for contributing. --MartyD 10:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
This is a response to the most recent inquiry that you left on my page. If you can list below the page numbers of the stories which are NOT spec-fic, I can remove them from the record. Also, each of these records will have be individually deleted from the database. Or if you feel up to the task, I can follow you through the steps to clean up the record. The Land of Miu

I tried to follow the settings for "Cat's Eyes" but feel I haven't done a complete job, and I'm unsure how to fix it. "The Land of Miu" is the second edition of the first book in the Land of Miu series (published in November 2011) originally published as "Cat's Eyes", published in December 2010. Sorry, I neglected to remove the white section of the image too. I would appreciate some help please. Isis 01:22, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Most of it looks good. Here is the record as accepted. You'll need to change a couple of things:
  • The URL of the link to the cover image will have to be corrected to remove the white frame: start at the end period before the file extension and remove every character (going backward) until you reach the next period. So http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61jRg-6uQ1L._SL500_AA300_.jpg would become http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61jRg-6uQ1L.jpg
  • All pubs entered as a CHAPTERBOOK type, must also include a content record. I'm assuming that this work is less than novel length (~40,000 words). So in a record update, go to the Contents section and click on "Add Title". In this case, the short fiction record will have the same title as the pub, and then add the Author1 credit (same as the pub's author credit). Leave the date field blank.
A question: I saw it was published in Australia, but the record's price is given in US dollars. (Or should it be A$9.99?) Is there a printed price on the book? If not, be sure to note that in the Note Field. You'll also need to indicate in the Note Field that this is the second printing. Also, according to the OCLC record, the story was first published in 2010. So we'll need to update the dates of the title records (not the date of the pub record, which will remain 2011-11-25). We can add the first edition by cloning this second printing. Mhhutchins 01:36, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
Strange. It appears that this has the same ISBN as the OCLC record for Cat's Eyes. Look at this record. Does OCLC have the wrong title? Mhhutchins 01:39, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. The OCLC record for this ISBN will be changed in the near future as it is incorrect, the title should read The Land of Miu. The two books, Cat's Eyes and The Land of Miu show on the author's page, see this profile, but The Land of Miu is not showing as a book in the series.
