The Dark Verse, Volume 1

Thank you very much for submitting this interesting book. There had to be only one minor change: The title type NONFICTION is only for titles with a publication on their own, so I put the correct ESSAY in. What is the name of the author stated in the book, is it M. Amanuensis Sharkchild or just Sharkchild? Stonecreek 10:32, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Copyrighted images

I had to reject two of your proposed submissions, because they included what appear to be copyright images. Your book cover for The Dark Verse, Volume 2: In the Blood of Death specifically stated, at the bottom, that it was copyrighted. And the author update you submitted for "Sharkchild" included not only his full name, but an image that comes from an online store that copyrights all of its pages, which would include that image. Sorry, but we try to be very careful about not impinging on copyrights. Chavey 02:44, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! I get frustrated myself with the number of author images that seem like I should be able to use them, but can't. And I see all these wonderful book images on auction sites, but I can't copy them and add them to our collection. Chavey 03:42, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

For the same reason, after accepting your submission of The Stuff of Dreams: The Weird Stories of Edward Lucas White, I had to remove the image, because it came from a copyrighted Web page. On the other hand, I could keep your image for The Crawling Chaos And Others, because we have permission to link to Amazon images! There's a neat trick here too. The picture link you submitted, which came right from the Amazon page, was this one, with an image "name" of "51qOPGyTCBL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg". Now watch what happens when you remove all the stuff between the two periods in that name. You get this larger image! (Using "51qOPGyTCBL.jpg".) Now if someone clicks on the picture in the book you added, they get the full view. (Try it!) Chavey 03:57, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

The Stuff of Dreams: The Weird Stories of Edward Lucas White

I've made the following changes in your primary verified record, based on ISFDB standards, which can be found on this help page:

  • The ISBN/Catalog # field should only be used for the ISBN as stated in the book. If there is no stated ISBN, you can use a stated catalog number in the field. Do not use a catalog number from a secondary source. I removed the SKU number from this field as it is appears to be a stock number for the distributor.
  • Generic titles like "Introduction", "Preface", "Afterword", etc. should be disambiguated by adding parenthetically the title of the publication. So I changed the title of the introduction to "Introduction (The Stuff of Dreams: The Weird Stories of Edward Lucas White)". This prevents the accidental merging of common titles by the same author.

A content record was added for the interior art by McVey. I also uploaded and link a cover image taken from the publisher's website. If this differs from your copy, please remove the link. I've also merged the newly-created content titles with those titles which were already in the database. I'm not sure what you mean. If you can point out the link in the record, I can tell you if I did it manually. The only link giving the publisher name "Arcane Wisdom" leads to the ISFDB listing of all publications from that publisher. I understand now. If you look underneath the cover image, you'll see the source of image file. In this case, it's on the ISFDB server. What I did was go to the publisher's website, found a cover image of reasonable quality, not too big or too small, and saved it to my harddrive. Once the file was on my computer, I used the semi-automatic method of uploading the file to the ISFDB server. That starts with the link at the bottom of every publication record titled "Upload Cover Scan" (or it will read "Upload New Cover Scan" if there's a file already linked to the record.) After that it's just a matter of following the prompts. The image can not be more than 600 pixels tall, and the file can not be more than 150 kb in size. After the file is uploaded to the ISFDB server, the editor must manually link it to the publication record, by entering the URL address of the image (provided at the time of the upload) to the "Image URL" field of the publication record. You should not upload a cover image to the ISFDB server until a publication record is in the database. The cover image file can only be linked after the submission to create the publication record has been moderated and accepted into the database. The Crawling Chaos and Others: The Annotated Revisions and Collaborations of H. P. Lovecraft, Volume 1

I have made the following changes to your primary verified record.

  • The title was corrected to use standard capitalization rules found here (under "Case"). So "and" and "of" were uncapitalized.
  • The binding/pub format field was changed from "pb" to "tp" based on current format rules. Amazon gives the height as almost 9 inches which makes it a trade paperback and thus given as "tp" in the ISFDB record.
  • Price was changed from "$14.12" to "$18.95" which is the list price given on both Amazon. The ISFDB record should give the publisher's stated list price, not a discounted or retail price from a dealer. If you've done this on other submissions, please update the records to give the stated list price or the list price from a secondary source which should be noted in the record.
  • As stated in the previous message, generic titles should be disambiguated. So I've done that for "Introduction", "A Note on the Text", "Notes", and "Bibliography". I also changed the date of this content records to match the date of the publication, assuming these pieces are original to this collection.


A question: does the individual story author credits given in the record reflect the credits which are stated on each story's title page? For example, is the story "The Automatic Executioner" credited to "Gustav Adolphe Danziger" on page 352? Thanks for checking. Please respond here by clicking on the "[edit]" link.

Hello Mhhutchins! Thank you so much for the clarification and for editing my errors. On the title page of "The Automatic Executioner" the credited name is "Gustav Adolphe Danziger". Since the guidelines are to go by whatever is printed on the title page of the stories and not the Contents page, I listed the author's names as they appear on the title page of each story. Again, thank you for linking the stories to their respective pages, I didn't realize it until after the fact and was uncertain how to do that. The original listed price of "$14.12" did come from Amazon as the publisher no longer lists the book on their website and there is no price listed anywhere on the book itself. Thanks for responding. You did correctly by entering the author and title credit as given on each selection's title page. Sometimes new editors use the Contents page, and because there is very often discrepancies between the two, we've designated the title page as the source for the credits. As for the pricing, when there is no stated one in the publication itself, you have the option of leaving the field blank, or if you can find a reliable secondary source, you can give that in the price field. You must use the publisher's retail price (that's the one that Amazon strikes out, but it is still visible), and be sure to give the source for the data in the record's Note field.
As a side note, you are doing extremely well for a new editor. Adding and updating publication records in the ISFDB is not a simple process. We don't expect all editors to get it right the first time, and we know it may take some time to learn the ins and outs, and all of the tricks. Please be patient with us as we guide you through this process. We will try our best to also be patient, but being human, it may appear that a moderator can be nitpicking, or even overbearing. Please be assured that it isn't personal, and we're only trying our best to achieve the quality of data that our users have come to expect. Together we can build a better database. Thank you very much for entering this collection. However, I had to change the price you gave to $18.95. We don't report the often reduced price emphasized at amazon, but the list price, which usually can be found somewhere at the right top at the same source. Because these are more complicated than usual (because of the collaborations and the variant titles), it's better that a seasoned editor do it for you. In most cases, you can go to the author's summary page and click on the "Check for Duplicates" link. When the system finds exact matches you can merge them into one record. I'll do these for you. Teatro Grotesco

I had to reject the submission to add content records to this publication record because it would duplicate titles already in the database. In cases like this, it's best to import the contents from another edition to avoid having to merge the new content titles with the old ones. I did this for you, but noticed that you'd added a story titled "In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land". According to a verified record, this is a group title for four individual stories: "His Shadow Shall Rise to a Higher House," "The Bells Will Sound Forever," "A Soft Voice Whispers Nothing," and "When You Hear The Singing, You Will Know It Is Time". Hello. I was wondering whether this verified or yours wasn't the same as this one ? The only major difference seems to be the price : my copy has, successively, the UK, USA and Canadian prices on bc.
