Song of Eidolons

Accepted the new submission and added in some data from Amazon's "Look-Inside" feature: cover artist, page count, binding, price. Since the book is less than a year old I am hoping the price is correct. Also added the image. I have held the other submission updating the author's biography as the image raises a copyright issue for this website. We have explicit permission to link to various sites for cover images, but an author photo is usually copyrighted by the photographer/publisher/or the author. We can't display that image without permission, or unless it has been declared "in the public domain", as some author's websites do. You wouldn't happen to know if that is the case here? Jessica Bonito / Jessica McHugh

Hi. I accidentally accepted (meant to Hold it) then undid your proposed change of the authorship of Song of Eidolons from Jessica Bonito to Jessica McHugh. Here's a quick explanation of the somewhat confusing relationships you will run into in the ISFDB.

There are Titles, which represent works, and there are Publications, which represent printings of Titles. Publications contain Titles (the "content"). Sometimes the same work ends up identified differently when published -- either using a different title or using different author name(s). We handle this case by making "variant" Titles (which you'll sometimes see referred to as "VTs"), to relate the otherwise different Titles. That is what is going on with Song of Eidolons, which has Jessica Bonito recorded as the author. She published under the name Jessica McHugh (you can see in Song of Eidolons that McHugh is used but the copyright is held by Bonito). So we have a Title with the McHugh authorship, and it is a variant of the title by Bonito. If you go to Jessica Bonito, you'll see how this displays.

In the case of differing author names, we use a Pseudonym relationship. We pick a main name (called the "canonical name") for the author -- usually the actual name or the name most often used -- and then we make other names be pseudonyms of that name. In this case, Jessica McHugh has been set up as a pseudonym of Jessica Bonito. When a pseudonym relationship exists, it dictates that variant Titles be put in place. Any title recorded under a pseudonym's authorship (in this case, McHugh) is -- manually -- made a variant of a Title under the canonical name's authorship, even though the work may never have been published using that name. So because McHugh is a pseudonym for Bonito, we have a variant of Song of Eidolons that's by Bonito. And because the canonical name is Bonito, we make the Title using that authorship the "parent" in the variant relationship.
