Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.
Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.
I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 15:43, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Linking cover images
The only images we can link to ISFDB records are those that are on websites that have given us explicit permission to "deep-link" to their files. You'll find a list of websites here. If you have a copy of the file on your hard drive (downloaded there from any website), you can upload it directly to the ISFDB's server and then link it to the pub record. Click on the link "Upload cover scan" under the header data of the publication record and follow the directions. I'm going to reject the submission that links the image from a non-approving server to this record. I will download the cover image of Long Night of Waiting from the link to the site you provided, upload it to the ISFDB server, and then update the publication record with the ISFDB URL. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:54, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- I just noticed that you did upload a file (four times) to the ISFDB server for this book cover. That's the first step in adding images to database records. The next step is to link them to the record. Here's further instructions:
- As the instructions (step 6) explain:
- Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.
- So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record.
- Something else to keep in mind: it's better not to use the "Upload file" link on the Wiki side of the ISFDB, unless you are familiar with adding the required Fair Use license tags to the image files. Otherwise you should start from the database side of the ISFDB and use the "Upload cover scan" link on the publication's record page. This latter method saves you several steps by automatically adding a license and provides you with an image file name that matches the randomly generated tag of the record for which you're uploading the image. If you have any questions, just ask here or on the Help Desk page. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 16:16, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
100 Hilarious Little Howlers
I rejected the submission to update this record for a couple of reasons. The image that you linked to the record is on a website that has not authorized us to "deep-link" to their server. Please read this page concerning image linking permissions. Also you copy/pasted the contents list from the Locus website into the Note to Moderator field. This field is not a permanent part of the record and is visible only the moderator at the time of the submission, disappearing once the submission has been accepted (or rejected). The purpose of this field is to give additional information to the moderator concerning the submission, not the publication, which will help him determine whether the submission should be accepted. Contents should be added to a publication record by using the "Edit This Pub" function, and then clicking the "Add Title" button under the Contents section of the update page for each story, essay, etc contained in the publication. We understand that adding 100 content records is going to be pretty tough, but don't feel pressure to add them all at once, or even at all if you're not comfortable with the process. Another point to keep in mind: Locus lists this as an "associational" item, which means it may contain stories that are not spec-fic related. If this is true, you should not enter non-spec-fic titles, and then note that the contents are incomplete. Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:16, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Extro Science Fiction
Thanks for your edit! I had one little change to submit: we do enter the price as decimals (if possible), just to allow in the future some statistics on, for example, price development. I didn't know of this magazine: were there any more issues published? Stonecreek 19:28, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- A few more things: the date of the issue should be given in the title field, i.e. "Extro Science Fiction, April-May 1982". Also the date field should be 1982-04-00, and the dates of the contents should be the same. And last, the cover image is linked to a website for which we don't have linking permission. It should be removed from the record. We have permission to link to this image on Galactic Central's website.
- This was the second of three issues of this title. If you have the others please create records for them. If not, I can add the data from Miller & Contento's SF, Fantasy & Weird Fiction Magazine Index. Mhhutchins 19:37, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- According to Miller/Contento, this issue had 48 pages. We include covers when counting pages in magazines. If we've not heard anything from you in the next day or so, I'll update the record based on the Miller/Contento index, including the cover artist and pagination. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:40, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- And if you're puzzled how to react: on every ISFDB wiki page (on this too) you have the opportunity to log in at the top right corner. Stonecreek 20:36, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- I've sent him an email so hopefully he'll respond soon. One of these days we're going to have to figure out how to get new editors to become more familiar with their talk page...and sooner. Mhhutchins 22:21, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the email and as result I've finally got onto the talk edit for your Wiki. Sorry it has taken so long to respond but I am _very_ new to the site; hopefully I soon get my head round the correct method of submitting bibliographical details and responding to feedback.
- . I'm afraid I have no further details of this publication. I don't own this magazine, my sources for this submission was Miller/Contento and www.philsp.com
- . Thank you for pointing out the errors in my submission
- . Would you mind amending my entry as indicated, and add the other two issues from Miller/Contento?

- No need to apologize. You've found the talk page much earlier than the average new editor. And we don't expect perfection from the start. There's a lot to learn and we can step you through the more difficult areas. You'll find some very helpful links in the Welcome section above. In the meantime, I'll make the corrections and add the two other issues. Thanks for contributing and welcome to the ISFDB. Mhhutchins 16:43, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
- The entire run of the magazine has been entered here. Mhhutchins 17:23, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Men, April 1962
Your submission to add this issue was accepted, but the following changes were made per ISFDB standards:
- The title field was changed from "Men - The Adventure and Entertainment Magazine Voll 11 No 4, April 1962" to "Men: The Adventure and Entertainment Magazine, April 1962". I moved the volume numbering to the note field. We only include volume numbering in the title field if a periodical is not month or season dated. And we use a colon to separate a main title from a subtitle.
- The editor's name was changed from "Bruce J Friedman" to "Bruce J. Friedman", adding a period after the middle initial.
- The publisher was changed from "Zenith Publishing Corp" to "Zenith Publishing Corp.", adding a period after the abbreviated last word.
- The price was changed from "0.35c" to "$0.35".
- The story "Whiskey, Women and Walloping" was deleted from the record. We only include spec-fic stories in non-genre magazines. (BTW, multiple authors are entered with their own field. Click the "Add Author" button below the "Author1" field to open a new field for any additional author credit. Entering both authors in one field creates a single author credit, i.e. "Mickey Walker & Joe Walker", when there should have been two credits.)
I have also made the Sturgeon story into a variant of the original title, so that this publication will appear under the story's title record. You'll become more familiar with this function as you continue to contribute. When you get a chance, please do a primary verification of the record if you have a copy of the issue. If not, update the record to indicate the source of your data in the note field. Thanks for your contribution. Mhhutchins 21:24, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Linking Images
[You asked this under the previous topic. I've moved it to this new section. In the future it's better to ask such questions on the Help Desk page, as they're easily overlooked if you only post to your own talk page.]
I've tried to Upload an image for http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?225829 from my hard drive earlier. Has it been rejected, or is there just a delay in the page being updated? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by WmFS1 (talk • contribs) .
- Uploading images to the Wiki is only the first step in adding a cover image to an ISFDB record. The next step is to link the image to the record itself. Also, uploading images (and every other Wiki action) is not moderated. It's immediately accepted.
Here is the image that you uploaded this morning. Just click the link and copy the file's URL. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:36, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, I just noticed that I'd already explained how to link images in the message that I left here back on January 10. Mhhutchins 21:39, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Cover images for non-genre magazines
Current policy is not to link cover images for non-genre magazines unless the cover illustrates the spec-fic content. I will be deleting the cover image that you uploaded for this magazine and removing the link from the pub record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:31, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
When to upload cover images
I'm going to repeat what I said above:
Something else to keep in mind: it's better not to use the "Upload file" link on the Wiki side of the ISFDB, unless you are familiar with adding the required Fair Use license tags to the image files. Otherwise you should start from the database side of the ISFDB and use the "Upload cover scan" link on the publication's record page. This latter method saves you several steps by automatically adding a license and provides you with an image file name that matches the randomly generated tag of the record for which you're uploading the image.
In other words, create the pub record first then use the "Upload cover scan" link to upload the image files. Also, as I stated in the message just prior to this one, we do not add cover images to non-genre publications, so I've started to delete the ones you added to the wiki today: Men, Sports Illustrated, Calling All Boys. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:44, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Another problem with image uploads
Looking at the wiki page for the image you uploaded for SF Digest, I have no idea why it's linked to Visions of Tomorrow #2, unless you went to a random record and used the "Upload cover scan" link. This file will have to be deleted and you'll have to upload it using the link from the pub record for which it is the cover. I won't delete it until you've had a chance to look at it and see the problem. Mhhutchins 20:50, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- And you've done it more than once. The images for Heavy Metal, National Lampoon (both of which I will eventually delete because they are non-genre magazines), and The Third Alternative are all linked to the Hypatia Press edition of Pruzy's Pot. ??? Mhhutchins 20:53, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Multiple attempts at uploading the image to one magazine
I'm going to delete the several, at least 5 or 6, attempts at uploading the image file of the cover for this record. If this were not a non-genre magazine, all you would have to do is click on the "Upload cover scan" link and follow the directions. (Don't do it now, because, as I stated above, we don't link images for non-genre magazines.) If the image doesn't appear on the wiki page, (you get an error message) it's because the file is larger than the requested size: no more than 150K and no taller than 600px. We only make exceptions for images of wraparound cover art. Regardless of whether it's viewable, the image is on the server. You should change your preferences if you want to view larger images. Go to the "My Preferences" link (or just "Preferences" on some skins) and then click on "Files" and select the largest limits (10000 x 100000 px and thumbnail 300 px). If you have any questions, or if the image doesn't appear, don't make another attempt at uploading the same image. Just ask a question at the Help Desk. Thanks. Recent set of submissions for magazines
I'm holding submissions adding records for five non-genre magazines and one sf magazine:
- Calling All Boys #7 and #9: Neither "Clockwise" nor "Smoke" are speculative fiction. They're only in the database because they were published in one of Sturgeon's collections. We don't create records for non-genre magazines unless they have spec-fic content.
- National Lampoon, June 1972. Are all of the stories that you've given in this record spec-fic? If so, I'll accept the submission. You'll need to make some changes in the title field: "National Lampoon [v1 #27, June 1972]" will have to be changed to "National Lampoon, June 1972" (I'd earlier told you the standards we use in titling magazine issues.) You'll also have to upload the cover image again, using the method I'd previously pointed out. Your earlier attempt was linked to the wrong record (as I mentioned above).
- Sports Illustrated. I'm going to accept the submission, assuming that "How to Forget Baseball" is speculative fiction, but you'll need to make some changes in the record. The title should be "Sports Illustrated, December 21, 1964", the editor should be "Editors of Sports Illustrated" (according to current standards for entering non-genre magazines). You will also have to merge the story's title record with the one currently in the database. (This applies any time you create a new record for a title that's already in the database.)
- Heavy Metal. Same as above, I'm going to accept the submission, but remove the cover image link, and ask that you update it to correct the title field to "Heavy Metal, October 1977" and the editor field to "Editors of Heavy Metal". (I could make these changes myself, but think it would help you in learning the ISFDB standards.) Also, about the page count of "98", which is an uneven number. (Most saddle-stapled magazines have page counts in multiples of 4.) We include covers when giving the page count for magazines, so please recheck that number.
- Science Fiction Digest. According to Miller/Contento, this is titled "S. F. Digest" which the cover you uploaded seems to corroborate. Also, you entered two contents as NONFICTION type. This type is reserved for book-length work. For shorter nonfiction works contained within a periodical or book, we use the ESSAY type. One of them appears to be an interview, so it should be entered at the lower section of the entry form under INTERVIEWS, giving the title, interviewee, and interviewer. I'll accept the submission, but remove the cover image (which will have to be uploaded because your previous attempt is linked to the wrong record.) I'll ask you to update the title and content entries, and then merge any records that are already in the database.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask here. Mhhutchins 21:39, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- It's been a few days, so I've gone ahead and accepted the remaining submissions. The following changes were made:
- National Lampoon, June 1972: date in the title field was changed; the image linked was deleted, a new image (without the stickered UK price) was uploaded and linked to the record; cover artist credit was added; editor was changed to conform to standards for non-genre magazines. After acceptance, I merged the Sturgeon story with the current record, and made a variant of the Conway story to his canonical name.
- Heavy Metal, October 1977: date in the title field was changed; the image linked was deleted, a new image was uploaded and linked to the record; cover artist credit was added; editor was changed to conform to standards for non-genre magazines; changed the title of Sturgeon's story in this issue to "The Singsong of Cecily Snow" (not "How to Forget Baseball"). After submission, I merged the Sturgeon story with the current record.
- S.F. Digest #1: changed the name to conform to Miller/Contento's; changed the editor from "Julie Davies" to "Julie Davis"; changed the date to 1976-06-00, based on a secondary source (noted); added missing data based on Miller/Contento; deleted the cover image and linked to the one on Galactic Central; changed two of the NONFICTION pieces to ESSAY, and the third to INTERVIEW. After acceptance, I merged the new stories with the existing records (all but Coney's story was already in the database).
- This may seem to be a lot of corrections, but don't let it discourage you. Most editors usually start out with entering books, which are ten times more simpler than magazines, and those non-genre magazines have additional rules to follow. Take a look at the records when you get a chance to get an idea of how they were entered. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 21:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
