Welcome!

Hello, Wkeil, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 23:54, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Zelazny's The Dream Master

I rejected your submission to add a new publication record for this title because a record for it already exists in the database. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:55, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

I apologize for the Zelazny error. I did not go far enough to the bottom of the Zelazny entry to see it. I'll be more careful in the future. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wkeil (talkcontribs) .
A very common error for first time editors. All publications which are not dated, or for which we don't have a reliable secondary source for their publication date, are displayed at the bottom of the list. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:08, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Ace is just one publisher who used the wrong dates on their reprints. The actual reprint dates are hard to discover. ((User:Wkeil|Wkeil))

Strangely Enough

This record was accepted but the following changes were made, based on the ISFDB entry standards which are explained in field-by-field steps on this help page.

  • Publisher field: This should only include the publisher and no catalog number (that's entered into the ISBN/Catalog # field.)
  • ISBN/Catalog # field: The Library of Congress catalog number was removed since that is neither the publisher's catalog number nor the ISBN (which wasn't used until the late 1960s). I've moved the catalog number from the publisher field into this field, adding the # to indicate that it's a catalog number and not an ISBN. I moved the LC number to the Note field, and linked it to the record on the LC website using the standard format of "LCCN: 123456".
  • Price field: Changed ".50" to "$0.50", the format used to enter a price that is less than a dollar and using the currency symbol of the country of publication.
  • Image URL field: The URL was removed (it was the URL of the ebay webpage.) You should only enter the URL of the image file, not the page on which it appears, and more importantly, it should be hosted by a website which has given us permission to link to it. Those are listed here. You also have the option to scan your copy's cover and then upload the file to our server. (Use the "Upload Cover Scan" link at the bottom of the metadata on the publication record.)

Are you certain this was published in 1959. Unless it specifically gives a publication date, or you have a reliable secondary source, the record should be dated as "0000-00-00" which is displayed as "unknown". The LCCN which you gave states that the book was published in 1959 by Sterling. It's not likely that the paperback came out the same year. Looking at the range of catalog numbers from this publisher dates this printing circa 1962/1963.

Thanks for contributing. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask at the ISFDB:Help desk. Mhhutchins 20:42, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Linking uploaded images to publication records

Thanks for uploading this cover image to the ISFDB wiki. The next step is to link the image to the publication record. As the instructions (step 6) explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing.

BTW, the image you originally uploaded wasn't very good. I was able to find a better one and replaced the original one. If you need help on linking the file to the publication, just ask here. Mhhutchins 21:08, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

I have uploaded the correct sized image to this entry. The copyright page of the book lists 1959 by the author as well as the first publisher Sterling Publishing. The back cover also has images on it. Is it possible to upload that as well? Wkeil 17:39, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Using the proper method to upload cover images to the ISFDB server

This file was uploaded incorrectly. Instead of using the "Upload file" method of the ISFDB Wiki (this section of the ISFDB you're currently reading), you should have used the "Upload cover scan" link on the publication record in the database section of the ISFDB. Compare the file you uploaded with this file which I re-uploaded using the publication record link. You'll see that the "fair usage" license tag isn't present on yours. (This must be done to avoid charges of misusing copyrighted images.) Other missing data are a link to the publication record, and an automatically generated file name which matches the tag of the publication record. If the artist had been known, the file would have a link to the artist's database page, and it would have been placeed into the artist's wiki category gallery.

Using the "Upload cover scan" method does all of this automatically. After uploading the file, the only thing the user has to do is to update the publication record with a link to the cover image file. I've done that for you here. I will keep the original file on the server until you've had a chance to read this. Let me know that you have so that I can delete it. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:25, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I have read the info on uploading images. You can delete my image. Wkeil 20:59, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
