"Assail", by Ian. C. Esslemont

I rejected your submission to add a paperback edition of this title for a couple of reasons. Research shows that the novel is being published as by "Ian C. Esslemont" and not "Ian Cameron Esslemont". Also, your submission shows it as "pb" which mean it is 18 cm or smaller. For larger softcover books, we use "tp".

I created this record for a trade paperback edition, but left the price field blank. Both Amazon.co.uk and W. H. Smith's websites don't show a trade paperback edition as available, only the hardcover edition. If you have a copy, please update the record and add the stated retail price into the appropriate field. Also make any other changes so that the record matches your copy. Het Rijk van de Zeven Steden

Submission adding this record was accepted but a few changes had to be made. Language was changed from Afrikaans to Dutch. And the publisher field was changed to the ISFDB standard name for this publisher. I also had to remove the series from the title, since it's a variant and translation of another work. The series name is given prominently on the cover. But, if you look at the bottom you'll see the volume title. Unfortunately, the image is very small, making the text hard to read. In fact, the image is so small that the software has to blow it up to create a thumbnail! I'm going to try to find a better scan to replace this one. Entering prices

"19,95 euro" should be entered as "€19.95". I'm updating all of the records which you've used the wrong format.

Also you've entered cover artist field as "Didier Graffet/Bragelonne". Is this one person's name? If not, please make the correction to enter only one person's credit per line. If the cover was a collaboration between two artists update the COVERART record by clicking on the "Add Author" field and entering the second artist's name. If "Bragelonne" is either an art agency, it should not be credited. If it is the cover designer, that is credited in the Note field, not the Cover Art field. Thanks. One other thing: if you make a submission to update a record, you must wait until it has been approved before making another submission to further update it. A question? I do not know what to do about the coverart, the book tells and i translate literally front coverillustrator and logo by Didier Graffet. Where does it belong? Answer to the first question: Enter exactly "Didier Graffet" in the Artist1 field. This field is solely for the purpose of crediting the illustrator of the front cover.
Answer to the second question: You should disambiguate INTERIORART content records in English regardless of the language of the publication. So maps are entered as "Title of Work (maps)". Frontispieces are entered as "Title of Work (frontispiece)". Cartoons are entered as "Cartoon: Xxxxx". All other interior art should be titled the work which they illustrate. On rare occasions interior art has an actual title or caption which differs from the work which is illustrated. You have the option to use that title or caption when titling the record. Ah, you created a variant title, but it would have worked better if you had: 1) Started from the publication you created; 2) Went to its title record (instead of creating a new one); 3) Then used the "Make this title a Variant Title" command in the Editing Tools. As it is, you used the "Add a Variant Title to ... this Title", but it didn't put the publication you created with the title you created. I've corrected that error and combined them. As it is submitted there seems to be no indication that this is a different printing than the one we have: all notes seem to be the same. I took a look at the first printing, and as the art seems to be the same, it would be safe to credit the artist based upon this publication. I've done a similar thing just yesterday with this book. We do consider both sources (a credit in a book & one in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction) as safe to base a credit on. Stonecreek 10:44, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Cloning publications

Sorry, but I had to reject your cloning of Max Ehrlich's Het Reuzenoog. Cloning is only meaningful for publications that keep their title type, otherwise we would have different title types under the same title. An OMNIBUS with no previous publication has to be established using the •Add New Omnibus button, then the contents have to be merged with the existing titles (in this case NOVELs). Harrison's Light

Re this record: Please add a note to indicate the stated printing number and/or printing date. Also, the page count field is not in standard ISFDB format. If there are 16 unnumbered pages which contain substantial text, then it should be entered as "320+[16]" (no spaces and with squared brackets). If the pages are numbered but separate from the pagination of the novel, the page count field should be "320+16". Entering suffixes to author names

Price field

Re this record: I changed the price field from "€ 10,49" to "€10.49". There should be no space after the currency symbol and periods should be used to indicate the decimal. A question: why is this priced in Euros? Is it a continental or overseas edition? If so, you should provide a note to indicate this along with a statement of the printing and/or publication date. "De Komst van de Chaos & Invasies uit de Dimensies", by Keith Laumer

Your verified publication was causing complaints from the system because (1) It has a different name than the title it's part of; and (2) It has a different name than another book with the same ISBN, specifically, Invasie uit de Dimensies & De Komst van de Chaos. To correct this, I changed the title of your publication to "Invasie uit de Dimensies & De Komst van de Chaos". Also, your notes for this book included the statement "Tweede druk april 1980". Importing contents

I had to reject your submission to add the contents to this title record. Not only did it costs you time and effort to enter the new contents, you would then have to merge each of these new content records with the ones already existing in the database. (The system doesn't do that automatically.) It's best to first search for another publication (like this one) which has the same contents and then use the "Import" function. (You are allowed to correct the page numbers if they don't match the book you're importing into.) Ask if you need help on how to import contents from another record. You shouldn't delete it because it appears in another record. But you can remove it from a publication. Go to the publication record and click on the "Remove Titles from This Pub" function under the Editing Tools menu. Note also that systematic attribution of the maps to the author is perhaps debatable (when not signed or specifically credited, we tend to use "uncredited"). Hauck 18:29, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

About the last one: most ebook formats don't have "pages" so we leave the page count field blank. Can you confirm that your edition does have pages? (Amazon gives the print length as 373 pages.) Going back to Ragged Claws: the listing on Smashwords (a distributor and printer, not a publisher) has a sample which shows the author as the publisher. And it also provides a publication date which I'll add to the record. But again, page counts only apply to PDF ebooks and not ePub or Mobi formatted ones. It also gives the price in US dollars. (Perhaps it knows the country from which the person is viewing the listing.) Mhhutchins 15:02, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Interesting. The cover art of your verified publication is shown in Steven Caldwell - The Fantastic Planet on page 32-33. In this book it is credited to Dave Pether. Jim Burn

There are only 2 books credited to Burn. I assume the third is Het Middenrijk? You entered that as Burns. Should that also be Burn? For the two Burn records, I did find very similar (but not exact) artwork under Burns (for the corresponding English covers). I think we can safely assume it is a miss-credit and variant them to Burns. The artwork is slightly different so would not variant to the English versions. I'll add notes.

Varianting translated titles

It's important to create variants to the original titles as soon as possible after a work has been accepted into the database. I realize that waiting for moderation is a factor, but if you could keep track of new titles you've created and then make the variants once they've been moderated it would really help. For example, this record and its contents have been sitting in the database unvarianted for more than a day. I just happened to stumble upon it (because the author was entered as "J.R.R." instead of "J. R. R." and it came up on a clean-up report.) Otherwise it could be sitting there for a much longer time. There's a link on the front page for "My Recent Edits" which lets you know when a submission has been accepted. Perhaps it can be used to determine if a newly-created title needs to be varianted. Sorry that I'm being such a stickler about these things. We all learned by having our things like this brought to our attention. At least, that's how I learned. Thanks. Hi William. I copied your question here to keep this in one place. To answer your question, "Malacandra: Ver van de Zwijgende Planeet" should be entered as a new publication for two reasons. The title is different, and the translator is different. The new title record should then be varianted to Out of the Silent Planet. See The Day of the Triffids, which was originally translated as De Triffids Komen and later as De Dag van de Triffids
Another thing, you should not ask questions on my "Adding notes/images to Verified Pubs" page, that is only for adding notes an images to my verified pubs. All other communication should be on my talk page. Also, if I am not a primary verifier of a publication, but only did a OCLC/Worldcat or other verification, there's no need to inform me of any changes.

Regardless of how someone may have interpreted the standards, if there is no primary evidence (an actual stated publication date), you must provide a reliable secondary source for the date. A dated sales receipt is good enough. "Probably" isn't good enough. I've known many publications that had second printings more than six months after the first. Thanks. You could always leave a message on the talk page of the verifying editor, who is an active moderator. As a corollary to what I said about noting non-stated sources, any data taken directly from the book itself (the primary source) doesn't need a note indicating its source. Combined words in publication notes

I've noticed that your publication notes often combine what would be two English words into a single one, e.g. "Coverdesign" instead of "Cover design", and similarly with "Coverphotographs" and "Coverillustration", both of which should be two words. ("numberline" should, grammatically, be two words, but lots of editors write it as one.) My guess is that this means you're a native German speaker :-) (Or some other language that enjoys a similar word construction). I uploaded an image of Ricardo Pinto , I got it from Wikipedia then downloaded the image in my computer and then went to special upload and copied the picture and addded to the author record. Did I do that wright?
All images uploaded to the ISFDB server must have a license, i.e. we must tell the world how we have the right to host an image which is not our property. Images for book covers come under "fair use". Look at the license attached to the latest cover image file uploaded to the ISFDB server and check out the fair use license.
Photographs of authors is another matter. They are usually copyrighted by the photographer, thus their property and shouldn't be uploaded to the ISFDB server without their permission. Some photographs are in the public domain because of their age. See the license attached to this photograph for an example of a photograph in the public domain. Some photographers have given limited use of their photographs without getting specific permission, usually with a Creative Commons license. See this photograph uploaded using the Creative Commons license. If you click on a photograph on Wikipedia, you will see that it (like every image on Wikipedia) has an attached license.
To upload a non-cover image file to the ISFDB server click on the "Upload File" link on any wiki page (like the one on this page.) DON"T use this link to upload a book cover. You might want to familiarize yourself with the procedure given in these instructions. You will use the Direct Upload Procedure to upload photographs. Here is a list of templates for various licenses, one of which should always be attached to every image file you upload to the ISfDB server. I believe Wikipedia has the same policy as we do about uploading images, and requiring permission and a license attached to each file. They're even more strict if I recall correctly. I have no idea what The Image Wizard is, so I'll have to pass on that. Uploading files onto the ISFDB server is much easier, just a few clicks and it's there. Also, you're correct. If you're uncertain whether the photograph is copyrighted (let's so anything in the past 90 years), then it's best to leave it alone. Re this title: When you create a variant based on a change in author credit, regardless of whether there is a change in the title of the work, you should simultaneously create a pseudonym. On the title page it is "Harper Voyager" , but on the copyright page theÿ mentioned "Harper Collins Publishers Australia so I will leave it as it is now you changed it.

Adding a link to the OCLC record in the ISFDB record's Note field

In most cases, this isn't necessary. For example, you added an OCLC link to this record, but if you click on the "WorldCat" link under the Other Sites menu on the left side of the screen, you're taken automatically to that OCLC record. The only reason to give an OCLC citation in an ISFDB record is if it is the source for the data. That's why adding an OCLC citation and a link to the OCLC record in a Primary Verified ISFDB record which has a stated ISBN is a waste of time. Other editors or moderators might tell you otherwise, but they can offer no legitimate reason for doing it. Contents on unnumbered pages

Re this publication: If the unnumbered pages are within a range of numbered pages, you should interpolate the number of the page. In this book do the maps appear before what could be determined is page 1 using the above standard? Mhhutchins 22:20, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

This is very strange because unnumbered page 4 is the copyright page so the maps come straight away after. The title page is 3, then a page where all the books are printed that the author has written on page 2 and then a blank page and the the cover.. Since these maps appear on unnumbered pages within a range of numbered pages, only the number should appear, not the brackets. The brackets imply that they appear on pages before page 1. No. Page 1 is the page which a) has the number "1" printed on it, or b) the unnumbered page which is determined to be the first page by counting back from the first numbered page. If the first numbered page is "7", then page 1 is the page which is six pages back, even if there is no number printed on it. The start of the story is not a factor in determining the page number. I think you are correct, I forgot to change the print date because there was none in the book only the first print date, so it is probably a second print according to the verified third print but it is not mentioned in the book. This pub has two different ISBN's on the copyright page and the backcover. If you look at the publication series, the one on the backcover looks more likely to be the right one. When giving the record number of OCLC, the standard entry format is to leave a space after the colon. BTW, adding an OCLC record number to a primary verified record is unnecessary. That is usually provided when the data comes from OCLC as a secondary source. I have this date MCMLXXX on the title page and on the copyright page © MCMLXXII voor de nederlandse taal: Elsevier nederland b.v., Amsterdam/Brussel and then D/MCMLXXX/0199/175. Maybe you have a different print, or my date is a misprint. I looked on the Royal Library catalog and there was only yours from 1977 there was even a price with the ISBN nr. but could not find 1980 print, it does not have to mean anything, or they forgot to place the roman cypher 5 after the x's. Default display of non-English translations

When you get a chance, could you please review this discussion? The proposal basically boils down to changing the behavior of the Summary Bibliography when the viewing user is not logged in. Currently only English translations are displayed for unauthenticated users. The proposal would change it to displaying all translations. The downside is that the Summary page could get longer and harder to navigate.

I know that this 'artist' seems (or is) sometimes to be credited as responsible for art, but these all should be mistaken. He had a agency for both authors and artists but never did any professional art (maybe he did some fannish art): here is an example of a german publication. Amazon usually doesn't link to the actual cover image of a given printing, they put in any one that's roughly fitting the published title. The cover design for Heyne at the end of the Nineties wouldn't fit with the one they displayed. In my opinion, it's better to display none at all than one that we aren't sure about. Cities in Flight

I tried to do an 'Add Publication' for my copy of Cities in Flight, which differed from your copy only in the price; £2.95 as opposed to yours at £2.75. My submission was blocked by the moderator, who said they were more than likely the same book, and asked me to check with you as PV1.

On the copyright page of my book, it gives individual 'first published', 'first published in Arrow' and © dates for the four stories and the Afterword. Then it gives the following for the book itself; 

                   Cities in Flight
                  Arrow edition 1981
                    Reprinted 1985

There's no number line on the page. Prices on rear cover; UK £2.95 and Australia $7.95. The copyright page is page 4 of 8 unnumbered pages, and on page 8 of these pages is a Dylan Thomas quote, and a fictional quote from an 'Acreff-Monales' character. The Afterword on pages 597-605 discusses a fictional future history, followed by a time chart on the last two pages.

A 2005 publication wouldn't have an ISBN-13. If you check the OCLC record, you'll see the first ISBN given is the one stated in the publication. You'll also find the full publisher's name and the actual page count. OCLC should be your first source for creating a publication record based on secondary data. Thanks. Sorry, for the confusion, but I didn't ask you to change them. Once we'd determined that they had to be changed I would have done it myself or instructed you in how to convert them. When converting NOVEL-typed records to CHAPBOOKs, you must start with a publication record edit, 1) change the type to CHAPBOOK, 2) change the content (title reference record) to SHORTFICTION, and 3) add a new content record for the CHAPBOOK. If you edit the title record first, from NOVEL to CHAPBOOK, you will lose the series and synopsis data, and any reviews will be linked to the CHAPBOOK instead of the SHORTFICTION (as it should be for CHAPBOOK publications.) The order of the submissions which you used reverts the title reference back to NOVEL so you lose the title reference link to the publication record. I'll fix the publication which I accepted and reject the other submissions. The one I accepted is in pretty bad shape and it would be hard to explain how to fix it. It's probably better to treat these as imprints ('Kok / Voorhoeve' 'Kok / Educatief' and 'Kok / Agora'), I'll change the one we already have. There are a few other (minor) issues with this submission. The title should i.m.h.o. be 'Monster' (Thriller is only the genre) and the publisher should be 'Uitgeverij Kok' (or the two existing entries for this publisher should be reverted to 'Kok'), don't always thrust everything on 'de Boekenplank'. --Willem 15:10, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Working with Amazon images

Hi. When you link to an image on Amazon, you should trim the file name. They embed dimensions/sizing info and sometimes even overlays. For example, in the image you provided:

you should omit everything between the periods in the file name (as well as one of the periods) to get:

For this one, it does not make much difference. Sometimes, though, you'll get a white square as background or an undesirable adornment. See Help:Screen:EditPub#Image_URL for more a longer explanation and more examples. I did fix the above; it's just something to keep in mind for the future. I have a copy of the mass-market paperback version of The Engineer Reconditioned and noticed a minor mistake. The story "Proctors" begins on p. 184, not 182 as currently stated in notes & contents. Is this true of your copy as well?

I would also like to change the notes to add some information, so that they would end up like this:

  • Printing date from Locus1
  • The copyright page has no printing information nor is it contained anywhere else in the book.
  • The title page says “Cosmos Books” for the publisher.
  • Copyright page says “Published by Dorchester Publishing Co., Inc. . . . in collaboration with Wildside Press LLC.” Also “Copyright © 2006 by Neal Asher.” Copyright page and UPC label on back of book give both ISBN-13 and ISBN-10.
  • Each story begins with a brief (1-page or less) introduction by the author, with the exception of “Snairls.”
  • The contents page of this edition does not include "Proctors" page 184 and "The Gurnard" page 292.
  • The short story "Snairls" begins on page 114 with the sentence “The other passengers went to their cabins. . .” It is untitled and not included in the contents page.

More on the contents of The Engineer Reconditioned

I just obtained (from my local library) a copy of the earlier trade-paperback version of The Engineer Reconditioned and have been able to compare it to the mass-market paperback version verified by yourself, Kraang, and myself. This has revealed that the mass-market edition does include the stories of "Jable Sharks" and "The Thrake". Like the story "Snairls", in the mass-market version, they do not have any preceding introduction or even a story title. One story ends and the other one begins after a short gap on the page. They are not listed in the Table of Contents. (Plainly this version was not proof-read properly!!)

Details:

In the trade version, "Spatterjay" ends with the sentence "Her own blueness was hidden by the natural colour of her skin, though Ambel had told her she had a pretty blue-white circle in the middle of her back." "Jable Sharks" starts with the sentence "The ship: three masts stitched across the horizon, black against the lemon sky." See page 151 of the mass-market paperback, where one story ends and the other begins with no title or introduction, just a gap.
In the trade version, "Jable Sharks" ends with the sentence "He wonders what the Captain read that frightened him so badly, and if he ever read any more." "The Thrake" starts with the sentence "To Mark, the runcible was the altar to some cybernetic god of technology, and he felt like an acolyte come before it for the first time." In the mass-market version, "Jable Sharks" ends at the bottom of page 164, with a gap with three asterisks in it. "The Thrake" starts at the top of page 165 with no title or introduction.

As has been brought to your attention before, a book published in 2004 wouldn't have an ISBN-13. I changed the ISBN you gave to this publication to the ISBN-10. Please keep this in mind when using secondary sources. (Also, be suspicious of Amazon dates of January 1. That's their default date when the year is known but the actual date of publication isn't.) French capitalization

Hello, when you're entering french titles, please use the french capitalization rules (in a nutshell, capitals on the first word and then only on the proper nouns so Les Brumes d'Acheron should be Les brumes d'Acheron if Acheron is indeed a place), it's quite a bit jarring for a french reader to see a title like Le Dernier Gardien des rêves which has a certain "wrongness" to it, it's a bit like an anglophone seeing The book of feasts & seasons. Note that accent are not rendered in capitals so Acheron is in fact spelled Achéron. Also you need to be particularly cautious when entering prices for french titles, it's usually quite uncommon. French publishers use a "category" system which assign a varying (rising with time) price depending on a scale. Thanks. Hauck 06:32, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

I don't know how you did it, but you managed to change the title of the Dutch translation of Vance's "The Dirdir" to "Tschai: De Waanzinnige Planeet" and want to variant this to "The Dirdir". I'll clean this up, but please don't mess up any more of my verified pubs. Also remember that Warner Flamen is a pseudonym of Marc Carpentier Alting, so the translations are the same. You can edit the too-big image (on Windows, you can use Paint) and resize, then save the resized file and upload that. When I do something like that, I include as part of the "source" note the location of the original and that I resized it. --MartyD 23:18, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

I have a question about this pub. In the notes you state Illustrations in book by Malcolm Dean, but I can't find any credit to Dean in my copy of the book. Some of the illustrations are signed as "Mal Dean", and they are the same as in a number of the English editions (see here. If the artist is not credited, and credit comes from a secondary source, there should be and INTERIORART record credited to "Mal Dean", the canonical name of the artist. Any thoughts? Enlarging an image

Re this file: The original image was only 300 pixels, which is OK, but enlarging it to the 600 pixel limit, adds nothing to the value of the database. "New" Foreigner Sequence

I've held both submissions. As far as I can tell through both the DAW/Penguin and CJ Cherryh websites, there shouldn't even be a fifth 'sequence' never mind a sixth. DAW just views it as one series and numbers the books accordingly [with Peacekeeper being #15]. The last and next one are simply of the Foreigner Universe and have no numbers or 'sequence'. Assigning a "language" to art

I may have mentioned this in the past (or possibly to another editor), but assigning a language to a title typed as INTERIORART or COVERART may not be worth the effort you're going through. There were discussions about removing this field from these type records because it creates problems with their display on the artist's summary pages ("translated as"?). Also, because art isn't text, it doesn't have a "language". The record represents the art itself and not the language of the publication which contains it. Unlike text-based records, we only variant when the title or artist credit changes, not because the "language" changes. I don't know how far down in priority this change to the software may be, but I personally wouldn't make any effort to edit these records. Mhhutchins|talk 00:48, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

The Three-Body Problem

Some notes regarding this pub that you verified:

  • I replaced the Amazon image with an ISFDB cover scan.
  • I also added a note explaining why we know that the publication year must be 2016. This note seems trivial today, but will become more meaningful in later years.
  • Furthermore I changed the pub note "First published in the UK by Head of Zeus Ltd." to match the text as it appears on the copyright page: "First published in the UK in 2015 by Head of Zeus Ltd." Please let me know if your copy of the book has a different text.
  • Last but not least, I would like to change the cover artist credit. Currently the cover artist is recorded as "Stephan Martiniere", but in my copy of the book the credit is for "Stephen Martiniere". Would that change be OK for you?
