The Space Swimmers

A number of the Fabian illustrations in The Space Swimmers by Gordon R. Dickson (which you have verified) appear in the contents of Fabian artbooks I'm entering in the database. Since there are so many illustrations in the pub, I propose to add those illustrations I would like to variant to the art books to the contents of The Space Swimmers, and list the page numbers of the rest of the illustrations in the notes for that pub. Anita Illustrations

There are illustrations in Ladies & Legends from Anita that are not titled like those in the pub. (1)Captioned "He scooped the mermaid up before she even had time to bite", shows a mermaid in the foreground, a boat in the background, several sea monsters. (2)Captioned "She did not stop for any last thoughts but walked steadily into the water . . ." and shows a woman wading into a pond, moon and trees in the background. (3) No caption, shows a woman with a cat in the foreground, a witch on a broom in front of a full moon behind her. (4)Captioned "Sir John put his arm around her. "Look, look at the stars." showing a dinosaur above, a man and woman below in some sort of bubble, fauna at the bottom. Can you identify these for me? Bob 18:51, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

The Halfling and other stories

Likewise. Thole was a magnificent artist. There was only one copy on Ebay, sold last year. You can always try to get a copy of Manuale dell'ignoto, or the German translation. Paul Jacobs (Belgium)

In your verified De Dageraad des Duivels, I updated the author of the story on page 21 to Paul Jacobs (Belgium). This was done to separate him from the Paul Jacobs who wrote a story in English much earlier (23 years before the other Jacobs was born). I chose to differentiate 'your' Jacobs since his nationality was known. If you prefer using something different than country or swapping who is 'primary', please update as you see fit. Fantasy Art Masters

The title record for your verified More Fantasy Art Masters is varianted to Fantasy Art Masters. However, there is another Fantasy Art Masters. Is your publication a reprint or a 'sequel'? From the title, it seems like a separate book. If so, I would think the two Fantasy Art Masters titles should be merged (the 2003 Locus award would go with the 2002 publication) and the More Fantasy Art Masters title record should be de-varianted. So someone entered the Collins edition and forgot to merge the titles. Fixed now. The confusion about the titles is probably because Dick Jude's first art book Fantasy Art of the New Millennium was reprinted in the USA as 'Fantasy Art Masters' (I have a copy of both editions, so this is verified). His second book, published in the UK as 'Fantasy Art Masters' was therefore reprinted in the USA as 'More Fantasy Art Masters'. Hope that explains things. The Art of Jeffrey Jones

I'm entering the artworks in the "Limited Edition" of The Art of Jeffrey Jones. If you have no objection, I'll import that artwork into the trade edition. I've encountered one problem: there is supposedly an extra portfolio that is part of the Limited Edition, but the number of pages is the same in the two editions. My copy has "Limited Edition Portfolio" printed on pages 160-161, and the artwork from there (a two-page spread) through page 175 are untitled (no captions), then page 176 has an illustration titled "previously unpublished" and an ad at the bottom for other Jones art books. The ad was only for the collectors edition. Nothing else was mentioned. The paperback edition is in the column 'Science Fiction Books for Oct. 1977' from Locus #206 (november 1977), which states 'The book is also available with a library binding ($12.95)'. Default display of non-English translations

When you get a chance, could you please review this discussion? The proposal basically boils down to changing the behavior of the Summary Bibliography when the viewing user is not logged in. Currently only English translations are displayed for unauthenticated users. The proposal would change it to displaying all translations. The downside is that the Summary page could get longer and harder to navigate.

Trillion Year Spree - photographs?

I've checked my copy of Trillion Year Spree against this pub record before doing an additional verification/edit, but I'm not sure about the way the photographs are shown, so am consulting other PVs for opinion in the absence of PV1 BLongley.

As you can see, the 16 pages of photos are included in the metadata 'Pages' count as '688+[16]', which to me means 16 unnumbered pages containing some Content, at the end of the numbered pages, not 16 pages of photos stuck in the middle of the book.

They are also described in a pub note, but are not listed in Content.

Would it not be more in keeping with Content rules to:

Return the 'Pages' count to '688' only.

Leave the pub note describing the photos.

Consider a disambiguated Content entry; "Photographs (Trillion Year Spree)", entry type: INTERIORART, uncredited, and not requiring any page number?

This would be less confusing, if nothing else.

Transluminal: The Art of Jim Burns - Content page numbers

Hi, while checking my copy of the book against your PV1'd Transluminal, I noticed a couple of slips in the page numbers in the Content section, as follows.

First, the 'essay' entry "Peter F. Hamilton (Transluminal)" is listed as being on page 83, but in the book it starts on page 84.

Second, the 'interior artwork' entry "The Neutronium Alchemist" is listed as being on page 87, but the artwork actually starts on page 86.

If it was you and not one of the other PVs who entered the Content detail, and if you're in agreement, I'd be happy to amend both entries unless you'd prefer to.

I own two Ilex publications, both have 'Ilex' as the stated publisher on titlepage and copyright page. Only Sci-Fi Art: A Pocket History mentions Ilex Press (copyright by The Ilex Press Limited). Waterhouse credit in Fantasy of the 20th Century

The credit for the cover of Dunsany's Time and the Gods on page 25 of Broecker's Fantasy of the 20th Century on page 25 currently lists the artist's name as "John Williams Waterhouse". I've checked the paperback reprint as well as the omnibus containing this book and they both have the credit as "John William Waterhouse". I assume that your copy is identical and would like to just correct the title record. Let me know if you're OK with that and I'll proceed with the edit. Yes, the Canadian price is printed, and yes, it's $3.25. I added a note about the publication date, and don't really understand the note "Except for the different price [90p/95p] there is no difference from the first printing". Aside from the illustration, the cover is totally different, with the Futura logo added and a new layout. The only difference inside the pub is the statement "reprinted 1976" on the copyright page. Pohl's Star Science Fiction

I'm going to expand the notes to several volumes of Pohl's Star Science Fiction series, by adding the catalog numbers for Reginald and Bleiler's Guide to Supernatural Fiction. I intend to update 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. There is also a note on the first volume stating that Worldcat does not have a record for the paperback printing. This may have been true when the note was added. However, this record now exists. That record gives a size of 18cm. While Worldcat seldom specifies binding, they do for the hardcover edition which lists a size of 19cm. Presumably the records for the smaller books are for the paperback. • Add the subtitle to the title field per Template:PublicationFields:Title.
• Add note about 'Assumed first printing that states "First Vintage Books edition, June 1975". There is no number line.'
• Add a note about the Catalog # and that the ISBN is on the copyright page.
• Add a note about 'The "About the Author" statement on page [259] has "4-75" in the lower-right corner.'
• The existing notes included "Available as UK import at £1.00." I added to that "(2016-01-11 the source for this statement is unknown. It's not stated in the publication.)" It seems like an odd note as it's not clear from it if this was an official thing from the publisher.

I have two submissions on hold that would add cover art credits. One affects your verified Strange Things Close Up, and is based on Salwowski's website. Are you ok with that one? I'll add the credit to the notes upon acceptance.

I might have done that without asking first, but the other submission wants to add a credit for Darrell K. Sweet to Red Planet and is based on a tumblr post. I did find a secondary corroboration on eBay, but I'd like something more authoritative. I noticed you have a primary-verified Beyond Fantasy: The Art of Darrell K. Sweet. I'm wondering if this might be in there (perhaps on p. 117 -- the number at the bottom of that picture on eBay). Would you mind checking to see?

The only difference I can see is the first (unverified) one has a Mar 2011 date and a cover image, while the second (your verification) is dated 2011 and has more information in the contents. Do you think these are the same and should be merged? Also, this is the same work but is signed & numbered with a different cover. Shouldn't it be under the same Title Reference. Also, should there be a note in one of the cover titles so they stop showing up as duplicates on Jeff Jones page? I'll advise the other verifier of this note. Your first link went to the COVERART title. Since all editions have different coverart, I unmerged the titles and placed a warning not to merge them (again). Jeff Jones page now has three identical titles for three different covers. Also, as explained in the notes, my edition is a second printing and thus a separate record.

Your second link went to the publication record of the signed edition. If you click on the Title Reference link, you'll see that the NONFICTION title record shows all three publications.

Sorry to resurrect this topic, but could you please double check the introduction and the "Commentars" essay in this pub? Are their authors' names given in Cyrillic? Is the text in English? Is the title of the last essay really "Commentars"? TIA! Ahasuerus 04:11, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

I've had this book on my desk for some time now, wondering what to do. Both "introduction" and "commentars" are in Cyrillic, and, since my knowledge of Russian is non-existant, gibberish for me. I uploaded scans of the copyright page and the title page of the introduction. The title of "commentars" is exactly as the second line on the copyright page. Myths for the Modern Age: Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton Universe

Hi Willem. I'm entering a fanzine which apparently has a reprint of a biographical sketch about Philip José Farmer in your verified above book but doesn't have the same title. I'm wondering if it's the p.391 essay by Michael Croteau. It's quite short and starts "In hindsight, it is possible to look at Philip José Farmer's life and say that it was almost inevitable that..." and ends with "The chances of that are about the same as a radioactive meteorite flying over a horse-drawn carriage and causing mutations in its passsengers that would, a few generations later, produce some of the most extraordinary people who ever 'lived'." Hi Willem, the cover artist of this must be Alan Magee, there's a signature A.M on the back cover that looks very much like the signature (on the green shirt) on The Secret Life of Algernon Pendleton. Definitely not J. K. Potter. Totally different style and signature. I explored Keith Parkinson, but no luck. Several sources point to a collaboration by Kevin Eugene Johnson and Victoria Poyser (could explain the initials). We have this pub that mentions Phil Stephensen-Payne's 'Piers Anthony: Biblio of an Ogre' as source. De Reis naar de Maan (in 28 Dagen en 12 Uren)

Hi, according to Dutch wikipedia and the Dutch Jules Verne Society at least two of the three titles under 'De Reis naar de Maan' are in fact (abridged, afaik) versions of both De la Terre à la Lune and Autour de la Lune (They seem unaware of the Nijco edition you have). I have the two Loeb editions of De la Terre à la Lune (Van de aarde naar de maan) and Autour de la Lune (De reis om de maan), in which is stated that it is the first full edition of the French original.--Dirk P Broer 22:48, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

As Loeb says it "Zelfs de bij Elsevier in de blauwe reeks verschenen, zogenaamde 'onverkorte' uitgave De reis naar de maan bevat nog niet de helft van de oorspronkelijke tekst van de beide Vernes: Van de aarde naar de maan en De reis om de maan."

FYI: 'Van de aarde naar de maan' stops after the cannon has been fired (p.209). Page 210 has a piece of interior art by Adolphe-François Pannemaker, which is the same as the cover of the 1964 Elsevier pocket 31, Le train de projectiles pour la Lune. In fact 43 of the 47 pieces interior art of De la Terre à la Lune (Van de aarde naar de maan) are by Henri de Montaut (the others by Adolphe-François Pannemaker and A. Doms), while the interior art of Autour de la Lune (De reis om de maan) -which starts after the canon has been fired- is done by Émile-Antoine Bayard and Alphonse de Neuville.--Dirk P Broer 11:21, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

I've added Reginald, Worlcat and LCCN numbers to Robert Weinberg's A Biographical Dictionary of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists. I would have left this on your notices page, but I also have a question. The cover scan we have appears to be green. My copy is bound in blue cloth and does not have a dust jacket. I'm speculating that the book was issued without a jacket and that the scan is just not reflecting the color correctly. I'll leave a note on the other active verifier's talk pages.
