The Great Fetish

I don't think the artist is correct for [this] publication. The signature is not Savage's. Any artwork he's signed [that we have records for] is always his complete name or just "Savage" and quite clearly signed [there are several Heinleins that come to mind]. The credit that's in the notes is a FLICKR account, not what I would consider conclusive [and I would bet you didn't enter that]. The signature looks like Sttone, with the first 't' longer, below the line of the rest of the signature. The style doesn't seem to be Savage's either, quite different from the Heinleins for sure. A Planet for Texans

Before submitting that Arthur Renshaw is the cover artist for the Texan half of this publication, I'd like a second opinion. In my opinion, this signature on file at ISFDB matches the signature in the bottom left corner of [www.flickr.com/photos/admiralironbombs/6264765076/sizes/o this] scan. Additionally, Renshaw created some hardcovers (which were less colourful, as usual) for Doubleday in the same period (1958-61) that A Planet for Texans (Ace 1958) was painted. And askart.com lists an Art Renshaw as an artist 'known for: western, cowboys, southwest landscape'. Your vote please? Thanks, Horzel 12:26, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I have my doubts about Arthur Renshaw. The signature on "A Planet for Texans" misses the first name (and is different i.m.o.) and the paintings are in a completely different style. The Art Renshaw you found on "AskArt" however looks like a winner to me. The signature here is definitely the same as on "A Planet for Texans". Help with Perry Rhodan Title

I was hoping that you could help me with what I think is a magazine in my collection. Back in 1981 I attended a convention in Rotterdam and one of the items given to us at the convention was a Perry Rhodan story. I've uploaded scans of the cover, title page and the last page here. I don't speak Dutch (the convention was conducted primarily in English), and I was hoping that you could help me determine or verify:

Is this a magazine, or a book? I'm guessing a magazine because of the copyright by "Born Periodieken B.V.". It is bound like a magazine.
This actually appears to be a Dutch translation of Perry Rhodan, #529: Die letzten Tage der Amazonen
If it is a magazine, assume issue 529. I can't find a date anywhere.
Assuming the publisher is Born and is probably the same as this one
There appear to be two prices f2,65 and 44 fr. Are these Netherlands and Belgium respectively?
I can't find any indication of the interior artist.

About the Dutch Perry Rhodan, I will probably start that project in 2014. At the moment only one Dutch translation has been entered, because of the Ted White cover. It might be best to conform with this entry for now. To answer your questions:

The Dutch weekly is / will be entered as a Digest size magazine.
You're right, the numbering of the Dutch editions is the same as the German originals.
There's no exact date stated in any of the Dutch editions. This one was published in week 30, 1981 (see Perrypedia
The publisher is indeed Born (the same)
Prices are Dutch (currency sign is ƒ) and Belgian
Some of the interior art might be signed. I think all interior art in those days was by Johnny Bruck except for the technical drawings. Cover art is also by Johnny Bruck, when the original illustration is used.
No translator was mentioned in the series back then. I do have some documentation somewhere that I will dig out when I start to enter the magazine.

We were indeed at the same convention. I recalled it as Beneluxcon, but it turns out that Beneluxcon 7 is Hilcon 1. I recall Jack Vance. I remember sitting next to him while someone had him sign a Dungeons and Dragons rule book. I was primarily a fan of fantasy in those days and was not familiar with Pohl. However, I do recall that Christopher Priest was also at that convention.

I've added my copy of the magazine. I've created a title series for the magazine. Please feel free to change the name of the series if you can think of a better one. I can add your copy to the series, if you'd like. I'll also add the series to the Magazines page, but again wanted to give you a chance to change the name first. Feel free to change any other details that you think would be helpful, either now or when you begin your project.

ISFDB catalog number entry standard is to have a leading "#". At one point this was required because the software would check for ISBNs and generate an error message for such numbers without the symbol. I don't think that's still true, but old habits die hard. Submission accepted. Willem, when you get a chance look at the page that Marc Kupper and I wrote for gutter codes, which explains how they can be used as a reliable guideline for determining the publication date of a Doubleday-printed book. Adding four-six weeks to the gutter code date has been shown statistically to be an astoundingly accurate way to arrive at the publication date. This is based on my personal research, involving hundreds of Doubleday titles, both their trade printings and their book club printings. Comparing the dates with the Locus listings, review copies, SFBC catalog and announcement flyers, Amazon listings, etc. has shown that six weeks is the typical length of time between the books being printed and their being in the bookstores. A smaller percentage have been published as early as four weeks after printing. As long as the ISFDB editor gives the source for the date, I see no problem with their using the gutter code to determine the publication date. Mhhutchins 17:23, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

First I changed the title to "Letter: Robert E. Howard to Wilfred B. Talman, circa September 1931", as it appears on the titlepage. The letter starts with "Dear Mr. Talman: Thank you very much for the letter you wrote to Street & Smith. I know" etc. I'm pretty convinced it's the same as this letter. I have what appears to be the same edition as [this]. Cover is the same [front] but there's no "Third Printing" statement on the copyright page. Back cover is 'split the same way the front is with the title/author in the blue upper portion and two blurbs in the lower white portion [Washington Post/New York Herald Tribune]. After the last page of the story is "Ace Books presents A Checklist" followed by nine pages of titles. Verification question

This C.J. Cherryh book [2] you and four others verified as being the 1st printing as per number line with "Printed in Canada". My 1st says printed in the US. Now there is no entry for a US printing. So is the there a Canadian printing with with a number line starting with a "1"? Is it a contributor's typo? Could five verifiers made the same mistake? Seems unlikely. Think the artist credit for [this] record is incorrect. The 'signature' on the cover is that of Clyde Caldwell. Fabian's signature is pretty much always a simple 'SF', which is present on all the interior art pieces. [This] publication, which we both have, has the same 'glyph' and is credited to Caldwell. Also, I think the credit for the interior art could be changed as on the title page the credit is to "Steve Fabian". I know we generally don't use the author credit as on the copyright page, but I can't recall any standard for artists if printed credits conflict. In this case it's a variant, whichever is used. Looks like Ace made another botched attempt at numbering their printings. I just entered this record which gives the first four printings, so I assumed it was the fourth. Because of the difference in price, I'm tempted to make my record into an undated printing which mistakenly carries the copyright page of the previous printing. What do you think? The credit for the notes comes from the line "All notes in italic are by Philip K. Dick". I.m.h.o. this means all notes not in italic are by someone else, who is not credited in my copy of the book. We had a discussion about the notes in the first volume here and here, resulting in the current credit, but no agreement. I'm slightly in favor of removing "uncredited" as author and adding notes, but have no strong feelings either way. --Willem H. 08:00, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

All good, except that all notes are italicized. Other than a chronological listing of the story titles giving the delivery date and original publication of the works, what part of the notes were written by an "uncredited" person? If we are to give the editors credit for creating the list, then every table of contents in every book in the database would have a separate content entry credited to the editor(s). In the past I deferred to those who did primary verifications of the record. But seeing them myself, I can see no logical reason to credit an "uncredited" author. Underscores/dashes in Poe titles

I'm entering contents of another Poe collection, and as I'm doing so I'm coming across more definitive evidence that dashes were used (either consistently or at least more widely) than underscores in the titles with parts omitted. I think I am largely responsible for the original underscore representation. Now I am inclined to change them. You have verified The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe, which has instances of many of these titles. First of all, I must apologize because I changed a couple that appear in this without asking, before I realized they were in this verified publication. Second, would you look at it and let me know what you think about using dashes instead of underscores? If you need more details, let me know. Another verified collection with a lot of the titles in it, Edgar Allan Poe: Complete Tales & Poems, has an Amazon Look Inside that shows use of dashes there, so I'm hopeful. If you agree with the change, too, I will post a general notice on the Community Portal and set about changing them all and adjusting any notes where necessary. If you don't agree with the change, I'll go the variant route (and will restore the few I already changed -- apologies again for doing that). Either's fine with me and about the same amount of work. Was kind of expecting that. Bloody Ace!! I always wondered how/why there was such a gap between the first Ace printings of the 11 Heinleins and the seconds ['70/'71 to '75/'76]. My copy, which has the original #73330 and 95¢ has ads 15A, 17B, 12-72-8C, 11-72-14C and 7. The last is a leftover, the others putting my copy in late '72 or early '73. Bet this isn't the only one they did this with. I'm not going to do anything with this just yet. Am just up to the 'Ls' in a current go-through geared to identifying ads/dates. Does your copy of [this] have any ads in the back? Mine has 11-72-14C and 15A. Stuart Wells has 03/1971 for this catalog# which I think is reasonable for the linked record, but there's no way it would have a 1972 ad. I think Ace may have printed this twice without changing anything except the ads, pattern that is showing up a few times as I go through. Most interesting. The numbered ads didn't appear until November '70. 14 was in use until May '71, so at the very least the existing record could be updated.
