You verified The Bane of the Black Sword THBNFTHBLC0000. I have a couple of questions about it.

1. Can you please re-check the ISBN and or cover price? I would have expected 0-87997-316-1 is $1.25 and 0-87997-421-4 is $1.50 but you have 0-87997-316-1 $1.50.
2. Is the DAW No. stated as 254? It's probably in the yellow box in the upper-right corner of the front cover.
3. Also in or near the yellow box does it state UY1316 or UW1421?
4. Is the ISBN a single line on the spine 0-87997-421-4 150?
5. Is the copyright 1977?
6. Exactly how is the first printing and the number line worded? Is it "First Printing, August 1977 / 3 4 5 6 7 8 9"? (I guessed 3rd printing as you did not state which is is).
7. Is it Printed in USA (at the bottom of copyright page)
8. Finally - there is a cover scan of the 1st printing at [1] but I can't quite read what it says under the title in red. It looks like "The 5th ??? in Elric of Melniboné". What's the word after 5th and is the rest accurate?

I read so many American publications that I lose track of what my peeve is about at times! I'm still pretty sure about "Grey/Gray" variants (although I've seen "Gray" on British editions now :-( ) and "Color/Colour" but I am now very confused about "-ize" versus "-ise". It used to be so easy to taunt the Americans with offers of missing "U"s - OK, I can usually still do that - but the Z/S switch might be a sneaky fight-back against the Queen's English... ;-) And I'll always have my favourite peeve over apostrophes, so I can remain a grumpy old man indefinitely. :-) BLongley 17:54, 3 Jul 2007 (CDT)

No - I think I'll let the Firefox spell-checker deal with that for the moment until I come down with a definitive opinion. I've survived my trip to St James's Park (apostrophe and/or second "s" arguable) underground/tube station (terminology arguable), to visit New Scotland Yard ("New" questionable), and am still debating about the "alternative train service" that involved walking for forty-five minutes on my way back home. Still, I survived the ordeal, and may even have appeared on CNN or a few other foreign TV channels as "man walking by looking nervous". Spell of the Witch World

Hi. You verified Spell of the Witch World. I have a copy of the book and it differs in some details from the publication record that you verified. Being a newbie on ISFDB, I am unsure what to do now. Maybe I really have a different publication in front of me, but first I would like to double-check with you before I do anything rash :-) Can you please help me with the following questions?

1. The publication record states (in the Notes field) that it is a third printing. Where does it say so on your copy of the book? I cannot find any hint about the printing anywhere in my book, but maybe I am missing something.
2. The publication record does not have an artist reference. However, on the verso of the title page of my book there is a sentence "Cover and interior art by Jack Gaughan." Do you have that sentence, too?
3. The publication record lists the content in a different order than they appear in my book. I have "Dragon Scale Silver", followed by "Dream Smith" and finally "Amber out of Quayth". Do you have the same order? Or does the ISFDB software simply list publication content in alphabetical order?

Maybe the following helps to determine whether we have the same or different publications:

• Does your copy have this cover illustration?
• Does your copy have an advertisement in between pages 96 and 97? My copy has one, it's about Kent cigarettes.

I can't answer the first two, but as Unapersson seems a bit quiet at the moment, I can help with the third: you have to enter the page numbers to get the entries into the right order, the lack of them in this publication means you can't imply anything about the order in his edition. Oh, interesting! What kind? I've got my manual methods pretty well sorted now, but anything that would, for instance, check all possible Amazon titles on the various sites that already have cover-art or customer images before I go look would help. I'd written some SQL to get a list of publications I'd verified from a local copy of the ISFDB. I was then going to use that info to generate a local page linking to my verified pubs. I got caught up in plan B though. So I've written three bookmarklets that I can use when on an edit screen. It will insert a link to the pub in the image field and open a window with the image at the same time so I can double check it has picked up the correct image. I've got it working on my N800 as well, which means I'll be able to verify at my shelves rather than carrying piles of books up and downstairs as I was doing. I'll just need to carry down smaller piles of books to scan. I'm also running Conduit to sync a local directory with my web server when I save some scanned images. At the moment I'm scanning and saving two copies at different sizes, so I may also do an inotify based program to automatically create the smaller image when the larger one is saved. --Unapersson 07:21, 9 Sep 2007 (CDT)

Looking at my 1992 Grafton paperback edition, I suspect that it should be "A Tale of the Albino Prince in the Years of His Wandering". The bit of research I did (worldcat, fantasticfiction, multiverse.org) seems to point in the same direction: Almost all sources that list the sub-title do so with the word "Prince" in it - the only notable exception is locusmag.com. Authorship of The Shadow Out of Space

You verified the The Survivor and Others so I hope you might have it handy. That collection entry does not show August Derleth as a co-author. When The Shadow Out of Space was republished in the February 1962 issue of Fantastic it was published under both Lovecraft's and Derleth's names and Moskowitz specifically states that Derleth wrote the story from Lovecraft's notes. Is there anything in the collection to indicate that Lovecraft was the only author? The Lovecraft/Derleth authorship issue is a confused mess.--swfritter 11:55, 5 Sep 2007 (CDT)

I was verifying my (van) Lustbaders and noticed that the 1985 printing of his Dai-San has 246 pages according to your verified record. If so, it sounds like the first (1981) printing was oversized, my verified 1983 reprint was regular size, and the 1985 reprint was once again oversized. Dark Terrors 2

I've added (using Amazon's 'Search Inside') to ISFDB Mortality, a collection by Nicholas Royle. It includes story The Comfort of Stranglers; according to both the review in Interzone and the 'Search Inside', this story was first published in Dark Terrors 2 (1996). This title is also confirmed by Ansible Link, which in July 1997 had Nicholas Royle, 'The Comfort of Stranglers', 1996 in Thog's Masterclass.

However, both in Locus index and your verified publication the title is The Comfort of Strangers without 'l'. Is it a typo in the book or typo in ISFDB or is it a different story? (Amazon reveals quotes on search for 'stranglers': near the beginning Contracts or something. Release forms. Legal nonsense of some kind. and a page or two before the end: Ropes hanging from every landing balustrade, dangling a noose in each darkened hallway. The comfort of stranglers. I have a NEL edition this. [3] . You verified a Mar 78 version. This. [4] . My ISBN is 0-450-03247-5 which gives a bad checksum. The ISBN you used is 0-450-03427-5 and is good. Does your copy possibly reference my copy. I suspect they transposed the 24 in mine and the ISBN should be the same. My possible error is in two places on my copy. The Dunwich Horror and Others

I made a few changes to this pub which you had verified. Both the Josi reference that I cited in the notes and Arkham House Books: A Collector's Guide, by Leon Nielsen list the publication date of the 9th printing as 1992. They also both give the copy count as 4,973. If there is a colophon indicating a print run of 2,500, let me know and I'll put that back in with a note to that effect. My copy of this book 6th printing (1984) and AH wasn't doing colophons at that point. Lastly, I added an cover scan based on the fact that you listed Bayless as the cover artist. I know the cover art changes at some point for the AH lovecrafts, but none of my references specify when that happened. Several of your verified pubs list Robert E. Howard's poem "Fragment", however I believe that most of them should actually be a short story with the same title. The story in Bran Mak Morn (which I've been adding begins "A gray sky arched over the dreary waste" whereas the poem titled "Fragment" begins "And so his boyhood wandered into youth" (from Always Comes Evening). The executive summary of the discussion is that a moderator who hasn't been active for a over a year will have a hard time keeping up with all the policy and software changes that we have been going through. ISFDB:Policy has been updated accordingly and, since you haven't been active since 2008-04-09, I have turned your "moderator" flag off, so when you come back, you won't be able to approve submissions. No need to panic, though :) as we have a list of Moderator Qualifications and you can reclaim the ability to approve submissions once you go through the process. Yes, we restarted development a few months ago and quite a few things have changed, e.g. you can now delete Pseudonyms and empty Series, Serials are linked to Novels as variant Titles rather than via lexical match, etc. There is a list of implemented changes over on Development/Recent Patches with links to Bug Reports and Feature Requests on Sourceforge. You may want to review it when you have some free time -- it should make catching up easier. There have been some changes to Rules and Standards as well, but I don't think we have a list. I see Mike rejected this before I could: he's right, we do insist on different printings having separate publications now. I can't recall whether we enforced that as strongly in the past. But even though we now we have multiple Primary Verifications enabled, it would be better for you to clone and verify the first printing that I suspect you have, and I'll stick with my second which I suspect you haven't. I know, your way does save space but I can't answer questions about the first printing, and unless you have both you can't answer questions about the second printing. I think we've settled on this principle, although it still bemuses magazine editors that are used to having one magazine = one printing. (Point them at "Destinies" and they begin to see the point, but it's not an obvious idea by any means, and when some titles get reprinted two or three times per month space-saving looks wise - but I think we'll address that with software improvements to hide the lowest level of detail, when unwanted.) Dorothy K. Haynes' "Thou Shalt Not Suffer a Witch" collection

Hi, I believe the publication dates for the all stories in this collection should be changed to 1949. The June 1951 F&SF lists "A Story at Bedtime" as copyright 1949 and notes that it is from the collection "Thou Shalt Not Suffer a Witch" which they state was published by Methuen in 1949. The 1996 publication you entered is obviously a much later printing, and the 1960s and 70s publication dates given for a few other stories are actually the publication dates for later collections those stories were reprinted in. That would be good for those stories we know were in the 1949 publication of Thou Shalt Not Suffer a Witch but I wouldn't apply it wholesale as there's no guarantee that the contents of that one match the 1996 edition. We need to make sure that the dates against the stories are that of the earliest known publication. My first copy of Shadow of the Torturer had slightly dodgy artwork, but once I saw these other volumes I made sure I replaced it. The US versions could definitely have done with better art. No that's fine, but the other NEL copies may need to be checked as they probably have the same variant. Red World of Polaris, by Clark Ashton Smith

I've added a cover image, from Amazon, to your verified copy of this book. Also, the posting says that this book was published "2004-00-00"; but Amazon claims it was published July, 2005. Do you know what the source of your date was? I know the copyright on the book is 2004, but if that's the only source of that date it's probably more likely that the Amazon date is correct and they just took a while to get it published. But if you had some other source for the date (an actual "published" date in the book, or a Locus listing), then it could be that Amazon is wrong. Chavey 11:11, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

There's an online Borders newletter from July 2004 that mentions the limited editions being almost sold out, the copyright page mentions "This edition copyright 2004". So I'd stick with the 2004 date unless there's something more concrete. I want to add the new Penguin Classics edition which has as an Appendix the original introduction by Peter Ackroyd written for the series. It is copyrighted for 1985, but am not sure when it was first published. Does your edition contain such an introduction and, if so, do you know when it first appeared together with the novel in the Penguin Classics series?

Hello! I'd think I own the same edition as you of this book, but mine has a cover price of 85p (stated on the back cover). At least the copyright page says at the top: 'Published by Granada Publishing Limited in Panther Books 1968 (over) Reprinted 1969, 1972, 1978', which points in favour of a publication in 1978. In addition it has 'Panther Granada' on the spine and 'Panther Granada Publishing' on the title page. If you have the time, could you take a look if your copy has the same data?
