I have your submission temporary on hold because I have a few questions.

  • Chapbooks are reserved for publications that contain a single story or poem. This looks like a non-fiction book. Am I correct?
  • You added two separate covers. Can you give me some details about where the second cover is (so I can add them to the notes)?
  • The ISBN you added cannot have been added in 1987 so either you have a later printing with the ISBN13 on it or I will need to swap it with a ISBN10. Which ISBN exactly is printed on the book?

Hi Annie, thanks for the welcome and accepting my submission, and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I only access isfdb occasionally, usually when I'm looking for something, and I haven't been back for a while. Re your queries:

  • I tend to use chapbook for anything short but yes, this is non-fiction, perhaps pamphlet would be more accurate given it's length?
  • No idea about the covers, I'll get back to you on that!
  • it does have a 10 digit ISBN, 0948482044, I must have translated this to the 13-digit one thinking it was more precise

Hi User:Stonecreek I can see what changes have been requested, even though not actually mentioned on this page, but I'm afraid I can't actually see how to make the changes as I'm not au fait with wiki editing

two other quick queries, why is Richard Dehan credited as the author of Lady Clanbevan's Baby & The Great Beast of Kafue when that is the pseudonym of Clotilde Graves, rather than the other way round, and it is Graves who is credited with those stories in this anthology?
what is the expected turnaround time between a submission being critiqued and then put on hold and/or being rejected? There was scarcely 43 hours between Dirk P Broer's comments and your putting my submission on hold, which actually seems to be a rejection Tinman 12:13, 28 November 2018 (EST)
The somewhat seemingly obscure way the titles are displayed is caused by our rule to usually go with the name connected to most of the titles by one author. See also this recent discussion.
The turnaround time depends on several factors: available moderator time and the number of submissions in the pipeline are the main ones. It also does help if there's a communication when there are questions or remarks. In every case, a submission put on hold should not be seen as rejected. sorry to protract this Stonecreek but at 13:34, 26 November 2018 you said my submission was on hold and when I tried to edit it at 16:21 it had been rejected. that does seem a very short period of grace. Is it always that short a period?
I don't normally log into ISFDB very frequently, does this mean I have to check it hourly if I have a submission or edit pending? Sorry about all this but I am very new to this and keen to do the right thing, but the guidance on the wiki is not always the clearest Tinman 14:38, 28 November 2018 (EST)

edits needed to The Yellow Sign submissions

  1. #6 should have the cover artist as D J Tyrer and the internal artist as Steve Lines but I can't see a way to edit a pending submission until it's been moderated?
  2. I have scans of the covers for both but I can't see how to add these at the submission stage though I think I can add those scans once they have been approved by a moderator?

Yes, that's the best way to do it: thus you'll have the necessary template attached to the image file.
If you allow, I'll manage the magazines in the way they're done here at ISFDB. One question remains: there are two cover artists for issue #7, is that correct, or shall it be the same way as for issue #6? Stonecreek 13:13, 5 December 2018 (EST)
  • thanks, I wasn't sure if I was missing a button or link for adding the cover images
  • please feel free to adjust these entries to fit the house style, I wasn't sure if the series should be the same as the magazine title or not. I have another 6 to add to this series but I'll wait until you've made the changes so that those can match the correct format

The Yellow House

I accepted your edition of The Yellow House, but made a couple of changes:

  • We no longer use CreateSpace as a publisher. They don't really fill the traditional publisher role. We either leave the publisher blank if not identified in the pub or, if self-published, we use the author as the publisher.
  • When entering Amazon URLs for image, remove the the underscores and the stuff between them from the URL. So https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/512pCpW2T2L._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg should be https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/512pCpW2T2L.jpg

thanks JLaTondre , I didn't know about the CreateSpace thing but I'll bear that in mind for future as I have a few others from them to submit.
Does that also hold true for books published by lulu.com?
I spotted the warning about the Amazon image after I'd submitted it, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to go back and correct that until after it's been accepted, which is what I'd intended to do, so thanks for fixing that Tinman 09:24, 11 December 2018 (EST)

Query about "The Professor's Experiment"

Hi -- I am looking at your record for A Brilliant Void and have a question about "The Professor's Experiment" by Margaret Wolfe Hungerford (page 105). We already have a record for a novel of that title by Hungerford. There's a note in the novel record that says "The 'experiment,' and the science fiction associated with that, lasts only up to p. 36 (in the original edition), at which point the story becomes a romance for the next 400 pages." So could it be that what's published in A Brilliant Void is just the science fiction part excerpted from the novel? Could you check, and if that's true, please put a note on the short story saying so. Also in that case you should change the title to "The Professor's Experiment (excerpt)" because when an excerpt has the same title as the full work, we add the notation (excerpt) to distinguish them. there is only a brief mention of this being an excerpt, just before the story, "...in the following extract by Margaret Wolfe Hungerford... " and no other detail elsewhere in the book but I have altered the title as you requested Tinman 11:22, 17 December 2018 (EST)

P.S. The author of "The Sorcerer" is in the database as "Charlotte Mcmanus;" should that be "Charlotte McManus"?

And where were "The Sorcerer" and "A Story Without an End" first published?

no idea, as it's not indicated in this anthology. Did you mean WHEN? If so I've corrected the three that were missing publication dates. Very strange as I was sure I had dated all the stories originally!

there is indirect reference made to three titles in Irish an cianadoir [the locker], aisling [dream] and an deorai [the dealer] [translations from google translate] but not how these relate to the English titles. By cross-referencing these with the acknowledgements to the copyright owners I think these are
  • aisling = A Vision
  • an deorai = The Exile
  • an cianadoir = The Chronotron
but that relies on some interpolation on my part. I'll consult with a couple of Irish speaking friends and see what they say Tinman 11:22, 17 December 2018 (EST)
OK, thanks for the very helpful answers. How annoying that the book doesn't give the original publication information for the stories in it. All the more reason we should try to find that out and post it on the web! I did manage to find the original publications for some of the stories by web searching. The only ones I don't know are "A Vision Without an End" and the last three in the book, the ones that are probably the translations.

Notes on dates

  • From Template:TitleFields:Date. "When entering a variant title record, enter the earliest known date when this variant record was published. This includes variant title records created for new titles, new alternate names, new translations and/or significant textual revisions." Some of the stories in A Brilliant Void appear in the anthology under a different name than that with which the first publication was signed. So we should give the content record the earliest date we know of for that name, which in most cases is going to be 2018-11-16. Likewise, the translations should be dated 2018-11-16.
  • There is an exception to the above rule if the canonical title is not the first title published. Since the canonical title has all other titles as variants of it, it becomes a place to summarize information about the work, and is given the date of the first publication.
  • From Help:Use of the SERIAL type#Date Rule. "When cataloging novel length fiction, the date of the original serialization is not used and the date of the first book publication is used instead." Thus, although The Professor's Experiment was serialized in 1895, its date in this database is 1896, when it appeared as a book.
  • Dates of excerpts: I don't know whether an excerpt should be given the date of the work it's taken from or the date it was first published in that short form. I think it should be the latter. I've asked a question about that on the Help Desk; hopefully people who've been editing longer than I have (I've only been here three years) will know the answer.
