Welcome!

Hello, Schaller, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

Shadows and Tall Trees

I've accepted the submission adding this issue of the title, but have made a few changes based on ISFDB standards. You'll find a link to the help pages that explain how to enter and update ISFDB records in the Welcome Section above.

  • I removed the number "1923-1164" from the ISBN/Catalog # field, assuming that's the ISSN, which does not go into that field. Although it's not mandatory that you add it to the record, if you want to, it should go into the note field. I've copies it there.
  • For generic content titles you should add the title of the issue in order to disambiguate from similar titles that may be by the same author. So I've changed "Editor's note" to "Editor's Note (Shadows and Tall Trees, Autumn 2011)".

Some questions: Does your copy have a stated price? Does it have a stated date of publication (other than "Autumn 2011")? According to the publisher's website, it's $15.00 so I added that to the record. I've also uploaded a copy of the cover to the ISFDB server and linked it to the record. Thanks for contributing. Webzines

I'm holding your submissions to add publication records for two webzines. It is the current ISFDB policy that, with few exceptions, web-based publications are not eligible for inclusion in the database. The sheer number of online publications and their ephemerality prohibit us from including all such publications. Exceptions can be made if a) the webzine issues are downloadable in any one of various ebook formats (Mobi, ePub, PDF, etc.) and can be accessed by an ebook reader (Kindle, Nook, Ipad, etc.), or b) the webzine is a paying market, has a stable history, the issues are readily accessible and maintained regularly, and sales to it would qualify an author for membership in the SFWA. The Pedestal Magazine would qualify based on its inclusion on the SFWA-qualifying markets. Issues of The Dream People would not qualify under either of these scenarios. If you just want to get your story "The Baby in the Forest" into the ISFDB, I can do that for you without having to create a publication record for The Dream People. How does that sound? Mhhutchins 03:54, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying the webzine rules and uploading the story reference. (Not sure if this is the appropriate way to respond on Talk, so please let me know if some other method is preferred)Schaller 14:30, 13 February 2014 (UTC)Eric
This was the appropriate place to respond. Always respond on the page on which the discussion began. One thing: enter a colon (:) before your response, which will indent and separate it from the previous message. And then add one more colon for each successive response. This makes it easier to read the conversation. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:23, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
I would like to enter some more recent issues for the magazine A cappella Zoo. I see that a 2009 issue was previously entered, but I do not see A cappella Zoo listed on the long list of magazines, nor find it when doing a search on the wiki (it shows up in a search on the main isfdb site). How would I add a new issue? thanksSchaller 00:39, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Go to the front page of the database. Click on "Add New Magazine". Complete all the applicable fields, and submit. The instructions for each field can be found by clicking on the circled ? next to it. If you hover your cursor over it without clicking you get a general overview of the field. If you have any questions, ask at the ISFDB:Help desk. Click on the plus + sign at the top of the page to start a new topic. Mhhutchins 00:49, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

A cappella Zoo

I've accepted the submission adding this publication, but there are a few problems which I'll step you through with links to the entry instructions (all of which appear on this page, the most important page in the help section and should be bookmarked for further reference).

  • Title field: You should give the issue name, number, or date so that the records for different issues are unique. In this case, the title field should be "A cappella Zoo, Spring 2010". (You can remove this from the Note field.)
Thanks, I'll make this change Schaller 05:04, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
  • Publication series: Magazines don't have publication series. Volume and issue numbering should be given in the Note field (unless it's necessary to add it to the Title field if the issue doesn't have a stated date, e.g. "A cappella Zoo, Issue #4").
  • Page count field: did you remember to include the covers in the page count? This rule only applies to magazines. Because 186 isn't divisible by 4, the covers probably weren't part of the pagination.
I included covers (but there were some blank pages at the end that I did not include, as one of the discussion pages seemed to indicate that such pages should not be counted if they did not have useful content) Schaller 05:04, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
That discussion was probably concerning books. Magazines have their own set of standards. All pages should be counted in magazines. Mhhutchins 05:36, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Updated page number Schaller 05:43, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
  • Cover artist field: are both artists credited with creating the art? Or is one of them the designer? If so, only the artist is credited in this field, and the designer can be noted in the Note field.
The second artist did the back cover
You can create a content record for the back cover. Only the front cover artist is credited in the metadata section. Use "bc" as the page number and enter it under the INTERIORART type. The title would be the same as the issue's title field. Mhhutchins 05:36, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Done. Schaller 05:43, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

I see you didn't add the poetry or other non-fiction contents, but that you noted you'll be adding it in a second submission. That's fine.

Yes, a long list of items and I didn't want to delete the entry by accident without saving it along the way. Schaller 05:04, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

A question: looking at the publisher's website for this issue I see that the story on page 95 is in Hebrew. When a publication is entered into the database, it is assumed to be all in the same language. If it isn't, like this one, you have to go back to the record once it's in the database, and correct the language. You'll have to do that with this record. Click on "Edit Title Data" under the Editing Tools menu, and then go to the language field and choose "Hebrew" from the list, and then submit. We'll also have to make it into a variant of the English-language title record. I'll do that for you until you become more familiar with data entry.

I've changed the language to Hebrew for that particular story. Schaller 05:04, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Overall, pretty good for a first attempt. I'll let you make any necessary changes, or I can do it so that you can see the results. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 04:44, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

I added a " - 2010" to the modified title (editor) record. We don't want to use just A cappella Zoo because then in this series listing, there would be a whole bunch of [ED] rows that looked the same. So either we stick with one title record per magazine, using the full name, or we group all of the magazines for a given year under a year-based title. See this somewhat cryptic help page. If there is only an issue or two a year, there is not much de-cluttering benefit to grouping them by year, but such grouping are very common practice. --MartyD 13:15, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Sirēnas dziesma

Hello. One of the stories (Sirēnas dziesma) in your verified publication A cappella Zoo, Spring 2010 is actually in Latvian (confirmed from the site of the issue as well). Can you confirmthat please - and if so, can you change it in the story record or let me know if you are ok for me to do so)? Thanks Anniemod 22:09, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

A cappella zoo, spring 2010

Hi -- I corrected the title of one of the poems in this issue of A cappella zoo, from "the house of sexuality" to "The History of Sexuality". --Vasha 01:50, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
