Santaroga Barrier

I have your submission for a new record/edition on hold as the ISBN entered refers to the 1971 NEL edition of Whipping Star, also by Herbert. Was the number entered correctly? Thanks for editing! ~Bill, --Bluesman 17:47, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Looks like an Amazon error rather than Nicola's - there wasn't a 1971 NEL edition of Whipping Star. 17:59, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Ah you beat me to it. Sorry I couldn't figure out how to review my entry in case there was a typo but I can confirm the ISBN on both the copyright page and back cover is 450 01856 3 NicolaT 18:10, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
My mistake! Should have checked OCLC in the first place... Approved the submission! ~Bill, --Bluesman 18:15, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Iron Fist

I have your submission on hold. There is already a [record] for this title, just with a different year. Is your book [I assume you have a copy] a later printing? Also the field for Publication Series is meant for the likes of Ace Doubles or Gollancz Masterworks, not for Star Wars. The title record in the link above is already in the X-Wing series, a sub-series of Star Wars. --~ Bill, Bluesman 18:20, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Apologies, for some reason I failed to find the title when I searched for "Iron Fist" (assume user error) and I couldn't see it in the results for "Star Wars". Yes this is a reprint "Bantam edition reprinted 1999". Thank you for the clarification re Publication Series, I mistakenly assumed the Series and Series Number fields in the Star Wars entries was the same thing. How can I fix these mistakes?
I'll accept the submission and fix the data. I'll also fix the image as with the URL as is the whole Amazon image, with arrows and all, would be shown. To get rid of the extraneous parts what has to be done is remove everything in the URL http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517H49370AL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU02_.jpg from the period after the "L" [every Amazon image has the first part of the URL ending with the capital "L"] up to the .jpg so the above link would be reduced to http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517H49370AL.jpg.
There seems to be some inconsistency about how titles like this are entered, eg 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: Obi-Wan's Foe' vs simply "Obi-Wan's Foe'. Which is the preferred style of title entry? NicolaT 18:47, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
There was a change about two years ago with the way titles in series were recorded. To keep from having incredibly long titles the Series parts were dropped, but not every pub record was revisited to make the changes [each separate record would have to be fixed]. Some series are short but something like DragonLance has hundreds of titles. A lot of work! Someday they'll all be done. --~ Bill, Bluesman 19:32, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Cheers and thanks for the info re amazon urls and series titles

Midshipman's Hope

You gave the ISBN-13 in the submission adding this record. In 1997, there was only ISBN-10, so I corrected the record. In the future only record the ISBN that is actually stated in the publication. The system will then assign the other ISBN. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 14:35, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for correcting. I mistakenly used the bar code instead of the ISBN. cheers :)

Sourcing data

You must give the source for the data you're providing in submissions to add or update records. If you are working from the primary source (the book itself), state that in the "Note to Moderator" field. Something as simple as "Book in hand" is sufficient. Also, you can only give one price in the price field. I've removed the pre-decimalization price you added to the two Wyndham books from Penguin and added them to the note field. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 07:28, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

The Well of Lost Plots

I accepted the submission to add this record to the database, but moved the data you gave in the "Note to Moderator" field to the "Note" field. The former field is temporary and should only be used to give information to the moderator about the submission. The latter field is a permanent part of the record and is used to supply additional information about the book. Thanks. 23:07, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for moving the info

The Eyre Affair

I'm assuming your data is for this record is from the actual copy of the book. Can you see if it has the ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 or both? If it has an ISBN-13, that's the one you should enter into the record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:35, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

printing 30 has the ISBN-10 on the copyright page and back cover. printing 45 has the ISBN-13 on the copyright page and back cover —The preceding unsigned comment was added by NicholaT (talkcontribs) .
Thanks for checking. BTW, you should end all postings with four tildes (~~~~) which will automatically sign and date each one. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 00:11, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the reminder. I couldn't remember how to do the signature/timestamp NicolaT 00:49, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Lord Foul's Bane

Can you confirm that the author is credited as "Stephen R. Donaldson" on the title page of this publication? If it matches the cover and credits "Stephen Donaldson" on the title page, the record was entered under the wrong title record. I can fix it if you can check to how the book is credited. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:27, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. The title page credits "Stephen Donaldson". Sorry for entering under the wrong record. Thank you for correcting. NicolaT 20:19, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

The Jesus Factor

I've accepted the submission adding this record to the database. The price field was corrected from "40p" to "£0.40" which is the ISFDB standard for entry of post-decimalization British currency. A question: the OCLC record gives the page count as 287. Do the two last pages contain something other than the text of the novel? Also, it's better to use the "Add Publication to This Title" function rather than the "Clone This Pub" function. The first function links from the title record, and avoids the problems caused by having to make corrections in the existing fields since cloning a publication record prefills the metadata of the pub. For new editors, I suggest that the "Clone This Pub" function only be used to create records for later printings of the same edition, or for adding later editions of collections and anthologies to avoid having to manually enter the content records. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:22, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Page 285 is the last printed page number and the last page of the novel. Page 287 is an afterword by the author. NicolaT 12:42, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

"Deepsix", by Jack McDevitt

I accepted your addition of this book, but I changed the publisher from "Voyager / HarperCollinsPublishers" to "Voyager / HarperCollins". For conciseness, we don't normally use the word "Publisher" as part of the name of a publisher, and hence we have more than 500 books under this shorter name, and none other the longer. You can sometimes see what the "standard" is for a publisher by looking at the other publications in a title, e.g. the first printing of this book was listed as by "Voyager / HarperCollins". When in doubt, I often find myself entering a short part of the publisher's name into the search box, selecting "Publisher" to search for, and finding out what other people have used. Chavey 22:56, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for correcting. I chose the full name thinking it more accurate as it that is how they named themselves without any spaces. I will follow the isfdb convention in future NicolaT 17:23, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Canadian printing of Omnivore

If this was printed in Canada, the price should be entered as "C$2.95" which indicates Canadian dollars. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:52, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Same situation with Orn. Mhhutchins 17:53, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

I assumed this was an American edition simply printed in Canada. I included the line as this entry did so. This printing seems to be a later printing of this first printing and an earlier printing of this entry
Actually this leads me to a question: the first printing has isbn-10 0-380-40527-X. I've just noticed that my copy has 0-380-00262-0 on the spine and back cover and is the one I used (as do the entries for 4th and 10th printing). but on the copyright page has 0-380-40527-X. My guess would be that has been left there from the first printing but it is just a guess. which isbn-10 should I have entered?
thank you NicolaT 20:12, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
A book printed in Canada is considered a Canadian publication and should be priced in Canadian dollars. Even some books which have covers printed in the USA and have the "Printed in Canada" statement on their copyright pages should be considered Canadian publications. Copies of these printings may have found their way into American book stores, but that doesn't make them American editions. UK and Canadian printings often showed up in book stores in my American city.
About the ISBNs, you should put the interior ISBN in the "ISBN/Catalog #" field, and record any contradicting cover/spine ISBNs in the record's "Note" field. Avon was notorious for having two different ISBNs on their books. I believe the spine ISBNs were derived from the catalog numbers of earlier printings. Mhhutchins 01:18, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanations. I have adjusted the entries accordingly NicolaT 22:03, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Lovecraft Omnibus

I'm holding your submission to add an earlier edition to this title record. According to the current records, this title was first published in 1985 by Granada (301 pages containing two novels) and then expanded in 1987 adding five stories in 552 pages under the Granada imprint. Your submission seems to be a mix of the two. Are you certain it was published in 1985 without any indication of a later printing? Is the publisher on the title page given as Panther? Does it contain the two novels and five short stories? I'll hold the submission until I hear back from you. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 19:37, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello, It is a little confusing. (Sorry for the long reply - I wanted to provide complete information)
It is the expanded omnibus with 552 pages, there is no publication date later than 1985 given. The copyright page and title page both say Panther/Granada, although the spine says Grafton and the back cover says "ALSO IN PAPERBACK FROM GRAFTON BOOKS".
Whereas the 1985 edition of Omnibus 2, also Panther, also £2.95, has Granada on the spine and on the back "ALSO IN PANTHER HORROR".
The 1986 reprint of Omnibus 3, still £2.95, is published by Grafton Books, and has Grafton on the spine and on the back "ALSO IN PAPERBACK FROM GRAFTON BOOKS".
I think that the price of £2.95 vs £3.50 adds support to this being an earlier edition

Your data casts doubt on the record we have now for the 1987 printing. I'm going to accept your submission and will probably wound up deleting the 1987 record, as it seems to be identical except for the date, the only thing that can't be verified. Thanks for taking the time to provide this additional data. Mhhutchins 22:05, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
I've decided to keep the 1987 record because I see it is a higher price which follows that of the record you added. I also changed the publisher to "Panther / Granada" which is the way we enter an imprint and publisher based on the title page information you provided. Thanks again. The Rest of the Robots

Hello. I have replaced the cover scan (correct dimensions and year) and made the printing history more precise (6th printing) in the notes to your verified. Thanks. Linguist 09:35, 17 May 2014 (UTC).
