Welcome!

Hello, Mythago, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! MHHutchins 16:30, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

URLs for images uploaded to the ISFDB wiki

The URL that you gave in adding an image to I Will Fear No Evil was the address of the wiki page that gives the licensing information for the image. This is the first page that pops up after an image is loaded. The URL of the image is obtained by clicking on the image and its URL will be in your browser's window. (Or you can right-click to "Copy Image Location" and then paste it into the URL field of the pub record that applies.) In this case it should be http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/a/a6/BKTG05875.jpg instead of http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Image:BKTG05875.jpg. I have corrected it for this record. Thanks and welcome to the ISFDB. I hope you continue updating the database. MHHutchins 16:13, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Martian Time-Slip

I added publisher series data to your verified pub. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 15:05, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

The Gods of Mars: incorrect price?

The copy of Edgar Rice Burrough's The Gods of Mars (20th printing) that I have shows a price of $2.25. Your verified The Gods of Mars (20th printing) shows a price of $1.99. Would you please check your copy of the book and verify the price? Thanks :) AndonSage 03:40, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

It appears that this user never found his Wiki talk page, and has since disappeared. The price of this record is undoubtedly wrong. (Ballantine never priced any of their paperbacks at $1.99.) Please proceed to correct the record, then remove Mythago's primary verification, and add your own verification. Thanks. Mhhutchins 06:39, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I've edited the record and it's waiting for approval. How do I remove someone else's primary verification? AndonSage 19:26, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Approved. Removing a verification is easy. Go to the "Verify This Pub" screen, change the primary from Verified to Not verified, submit and then add your own verification. --Willem H. 21:39, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Done, thanks :) AndonSage 22:23, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Foundation & Foundation and Empire 1994 HarperCollins (UK)

Added new cover to this. This cover is from this edition: http://www.harpercollins.co.uk/Titles/3034/foundation-isaac-asimov-9780586010808# ISBN:978-0-586-01080-8 Size:111x178mm Format:Paperback Imprint:Collins Division:HarperFiction Edition Type:Reissue. Publication Date UK:28 March 1994. Could you check your book, may be you add wrong cover? BarDenis 20:05, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

I think there is wrong cover too. I have checked it in official page. This page also have full book's data with another cover BarDenis 20:38, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

About the first cover, I think you're wrong. There's a "browse inside this book" option (center column, top) where you can see the copyright page. This states "This paperback edition 1995" over "26", meaning it's the 26th printing of this edition. The 1st printing probably had the Tim White cover Mythago uploaded. --Willem H. 20:51, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
And the second is a 19th printing. --Willem H. 20:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I now this all. But in the Locus Index to Science Fiction: 1984-1998 we have this: "Foundation (HarperCollins UK 0-586-01080-7, May ’94 [Jun ’94], £4.99, 234pp, pb) [Foundation] Reprint (Gnome 1951) sf novel. First Volume in the “Foundation” saga. The three covers of this edition form a single cityscape." Single cityscape - covers from Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation. Collage of all three covers.
That changes things, I hadn't checked Locus. You could be right, maybe Mythago will respond. --Willem H. 20:08, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I see now what has happened. BarDennis, you replaced the original ISFDB image file associated with this pub record with this new one. (The history of the image remains on the Wiki page for it.) We ordinarily would not have done it this way. You should have uploaded your image, giving it a new file name, and then updated the pub record to link to the new image. Of course, all of this should have been done after consulting with the primary verifier. I'm not disputing the validity of the image, just the procedure to change it. Replacing images on the Wiki is not a moderated process so no one was able to inform you of the correct procedure to take in this case. In the future if you believe that an image linked to a pub record is in error, please notify the primary verifier, or if there isn't one, ask a moderator for help at the help desk page. Thanks.
Now back to the issue at hand. I believe that Mythago probably verified the wrong record. He may have looked for the same ISBN. Unfortunately, Panther/Grafton/HarperCollins is very stingy about buying new ISBNs and continued to use the same one for decades, regardless of the imprint used. I'm going to accept the submission to remove Tim White's credit (he painted the 1983 Panther edition). Mhhutchins 21:21, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
It's possibly a little unfair to accuse HarperCollins of being stingy about not buying new ISBNs for something they're going to issue with the same text in the same language in the same format with even the same pagination! I think keeping the same ISBN does help prevent people buying the same book several times over. Having said that, from OUR point of view it can be a pain when we want to record every printing. "Printing number support" has been on the wishlist here for years, but 1080 to 10807 to 0-586-01080-7 shows the problem - it predates ISBN, and even predates SBN - when it was invented, a lot of British publishers simply put their catalogue numbers into the SBN, which carried forward to ISBN. And Michael hasn't mentioned Granada or Triad editions! :-/ BLongley 04:58, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
You're correct, Bill. I admit, I was too harsh on HarperCollins, because they (and any other publisher) are not required to assign a new ISBN when reprinting the same title, even though some do (but that's quickly disappearing as well.) My complaint is with any publisher that reprints a book under a new imprint, yet retains the same ISBN. Otherwise, I have no problem with them saving the money. Still, as you point out, it's a pain for bibliographers. Mhhutchins 02:58, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Neuromancer 1986 Grafton

You sure that there is corect cover? This is first Grafton/Panther edition. Second edition from 1987 was with cover by Tim White. You can check it there. Locus wrote that edition from 1989 have cover by Steve Crisp. BarDenis 20:37, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Mythago seems to have disappeared. So I believe again he may have verified the wrong record because of the ISBN. I'm going to accept the submission to change the artist credit and cover image. Mhhutchins 18:30, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Count Zero - pub notes

I've added pub notes on cover art credit and additional pricing to your PV2'd Count Zero, in absence of PV1 BLongley. Astrodan 21:01, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Asimov's Foundation

I've cloned from your verified Voyager edition of Foundation and created the record for the second printing. I've also imported the records for the contents (novelettes and short stories), which you can add to your edition with the page numbers by using the 'Import Content' tool. Thanks.
