Linking images to the publication record

Now that you've uploaded the cover image you must update the pub record, by adding the URL of the image in the "Image URL" field. Just copy the URL of the image, go to the pub record, click on "Edit This Pub" under the editing tools, paste the URL in the proper field, and then click "Submit Data". Thanks for contributing. Michael Capobianco

I had to reject your addition of an image link to Michael Capobianco. Unfortunately, we can only use images from sites that have explicitly given us permission to do so (see ISFDB:Image linking permissions). Based on your username, if you own the photo, you can uploaded it to our server (Image:Michael Capobianco.jpg would be an applicable location) & then link the author record to the image on our server. By uploading this image file to the ISFDB server, do you agree to release it to the public domain or wish to retain any copyright of ownership applicable to the image? Hello,

About this update. Are you trying to indicate that this is actually a single piece of text? Looking around, it looks like you are correct however, it will not be a novel but a novella - too short to be a novel. In order to convert this, it is better to be done from the publication page, not the title one. Would you like me to do do it or would you like to try (this explains how to convert a novel, same process need to be followed here). Let me know and thanks for finding this one! Yes, that's what I was trying to indicate. Feeley just indicated on FB that KENTAUROS is a novel, and it's clear that it was mistakenly identified as a collection because of the blurb from the publisher which calls it "part essay, part novella, and part poetry". I will be happy to. If you have contact with him on FB, can you inquire how many words are in the work? From what I can see, it is under 40K (where we start calling it a novel) - but if the author can confirm - it makes it even easier. Annie 17:52, 6 May 2020 (EDT)

It's 33,000 words and he agrees that technically, it is a novella. Thanks for such a quick response!

Nebula Awards Showcase 54

I accepted your addition of Nebula Awards Showcase 54, but had to make some changes:

  • Publisher: Normalized the publisher to "Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America"
  • ASIN: Removed the ASIN as it was for the ebook, but this is the tp edition. I cloned the ebook edition and added it there.
  • Introduction: Changed title to "Introduction (Nebula Awards Showcase 54)" as common titles like Introduction, Foreword, etc. need to be disambiguated with the title of the book.
  • R.R. Virdi: When an author's name has periods, we always place a space after the periods, so "R. R. Virdi".
  • Excerpts: The size provided an excerpt should be the size of the excerpt, not the size of the original work. The date of the excerpt is also the date the excerpt first appeared, not the date of the original work.
  • Nonfiction: The Nonfiction type is for books. Nonfiction within a book is entered as an essay.
  • Cover: We only credit cover artists, not cover designers. As the copyright page (via Amazon Look Inside) show the credits as design by, I have moved them to the publication notes.

Unfortunately, I had to reject this submission. The ISFDB is a publication based database. So instead of creating a variant title and putting the publication information in the title notes, please use the "Add New Anthology" option, enter the publication information, and put the story in the contents section. Once approved, the anthology title record would be varianted to the English anthology title record and the content title records would be varianted to the English content title records. Regarding this submission: Does the publication list the author names in English on the title pages? Or does it use Russian? And are you fixing a data entry typo or trying to get the record to display on the canonical author page? We enter the credits as per the pub (with only minor formatting standardizations) including in the language printed. We then variant to the canonical name. Approved. I updated the dates of the contents to match the publication as we date translations to the date the translation was published. If I misunderstood and they were previously published, I can change it back. Now, the translations have to have the translator added to the translation title record (using the translator template so "{{tr|О. Перфильева}}") and varianted to the original English title records. The "new" author records also need to be made an alternate name for the English names. Let me know if you want to do that or if you want help. Sorry. I'm still a little confused. Could you do one story that I can use an example?
Sure. Let's take the anthology itself. So for this title record:
  • I edited it and added "{{tr|О. Перфильева}}" in the notes field. This results in "Translated by О. Перфильева" being displayed.
  • I then used the "Make This Title a Variant" link on the right and entered 35144 under Option 1. This made the Russian version appear as a translation of the original.
  • I then went to Майк Резник and saw it was not already linked to Mike Resnick so I used the "Make/Remove Alternate Name" option and entered "Mike Resnick" as the "Parent Name". This makes Майк Резник show up as an alternate name for Mike Resnick.
  • I then edited Майк Резник and set the language to English. We use the author's canonical language for their alternate names.
  • I repeated those last two steps to make Мартин Гринберг an alternate name to Martin H. Greenberg
This needs to be repeated (using the correct title record & author names) for all the contents of the anthology to link them to their respective English versions. Hope that explanation makes sense. I know it is a lot. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:46, 1 January 2022 (EST)

And one more note: As usual in Russian books, the name of a translator will be inflected when credited unless it sits on its own somewhere. We need their name in the nominative when recording in English here. In that case it is О. Перфильев (Олег Перфильев) and not О. Перфильева. The same applies for cover artists and internal illustrations artists. I will fix it everywhere. Thanks for adding the book! Annie 16:56, 15 February 2022 (EST)

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Handbook

Michael Capobianco ISNI ID

ISNI is not something that most people recognize and we do not have a good way to record these in the Notes - when you add it there, it looks weird. And people will need to search for them anyway - which is not very user friendly. You can add it as a LINK if you want - i.e. add the result as a link. See how I did it here. Thanks! That seems like a reasonable compromise. I'm not sure how to bring this up to the isfdb as a bigger issue or even if it's appropriate, but I believe that ISNI information (or links) would be a good addition to the isfdb for any authors or artists whose names need to be disambiguated. In fact, that's the whole purpose of ISNI. Going a little farther, I would like ISNI to incorporate information from the isfdb, which is far more comprehensive. But although I've talked with some of the people associated with ISNI and pointed them to the isfdb, I don't think I've gotten through to anyone who could make that change.Michaelc 14:10, 19 February 2022 (EST)
For ISNI links on ISFDB (and any other concerns): Post whatever ideas you have on the Community Portal. If there is support, a work task will be created and it will be added to the backlog. When it will be implemented is a different story but that's how things happen around here. :) We have the concept of templates which can create automatic links in the notes although in this case the Links section is better IMO. We do not have external IDs for authors as we have for publications - maybe that should be the request/proposal - and then we can have a space for these IDs on the authors pages specifically). I'm going to go ahead and approve those edits and move my secondary verifications to the new record. It would have been better to have updated the existing record rather than creating a duplicate and then deleting the original. However, at this point the new record has more date that would have to be moved to the original record.
