Author order

You updated Fallen Angels to try to update the author order.

Unfortunately, ISFDB has never given us much control over the order of the credits and will shuffle them into a counter intuitive, and different, order if you try to fix the credits. One trick that seems to work most of the time for correcting the order is to enter the authors in reverse order or backwards. --Marc Kupper|talk 19:04, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

The Fuzzy Papers

I'm holding your submission to make changes to this record. You may not have noticed that the record has been primary verified (under the main section look at "Verification Status"), meaning that another editor has verified that the data as given in the record is correct. According to ISFDB rules (given here and linked in the Welcome section above), you should discuss any inconsistencies with the primary verifier before making changes that affect the record's data. Special entry standards for SFBC

Please read these intstructions about creating records for SFBC printings, the entry of which can be particularly challenging to new editors. In the 1990s the SFBC started to assign ISBNs to most of their original publications, and occasionally to their hardcover reprints of the original publisher's paperback editions. When the ISBN is SFBC-assigned and not the original publisher's ISBN, we give that number in the ISBN/Catalog # field. The SFBC identification number (found on the back of the dustjacket) is then recorded in the note field. In the case of Guards! Guards!, the SFBC edition was the first American hardcover edition and stated the SFBC-assigned ISBN (1-56865-193-7) on the copyright page. So I will reject the submission to move the ISBN to the note field and the ID number to the ISBN/Catalog # field. I will update the record to change the cover artist to "Doug Andersen" based on your submission. Is this exactly how the artist is credited in the publication? One more question: Is there any indication of the Roc imprint, either on the book's spine or dustjacket? If only Gollancz is given as the publisher on the title page, ISFDB standards require it to be given in the publisher field of the record. In this case we add the SFBC extension to indicate that it was published for the SFBC: "Gollancz / SFBC". Thanks for looking. Mhhutchins 20:12, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Reaper Man

In light of what I told you above, the question would be "Why didn't the SFBC assign their own ISBN to this printing?" That's a question only they can answer, so we revert back to the standard entry method (as described in the instructions I linked to in the above message): the SFBC ID number is entered into the ISBN/Catalog # field and the ISBN of the trade publisher's ISBN (Gollancz in this case) is entered into the note field. So you did it correctly. A question though similar to the one I asked above: Is either the Roc or NAL imprint printed anywhere in the book? If so, you can record that in the record's note field. If only Gollancz is credited on the title page, the record's publisher should be changed to "Gollancz / SFBC". Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:19, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

In the response you posted on my talk page (now you know why it makes it harder to respond on a different page!) you say "As for Reaper Man, the spine of the jacket and book have the NAL logo and the title page has the Roc logo." But in the submission updating it you say that Gollancz is credited on the title page without any mention of the Roc logo. Are both credited on the title page? Sorry, I think I must have accidentally left that as is. Title page has the Roc logo, the only mention of Gollancz is on the copyright page as the first UK publisher.--MannGil 23:19, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

I've moved your response back to this page because as I mentioned in the message you left on my talk page, you should response to questions on the page on which they are asked.
Now, this question didn't concern the cover artist, but the cover designer, two entirely different roles, the first of which we credit in the "Artist" field, the second of which we credit in the "Note" field. Is there a statement on the copyright page that gives the cover design credit to Michael Sabanosh? If so, you should keep that in the note field. Mhhutchins 22:48, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
The copyright page doesn't mention a designer either, just the author and publisher. I wouldn't be surprised if Sabanosh did design the cover, he did for several other Discworld novels, but he isn't credited anywhere in this book.--MannGil 23:06, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Sourcing and verifying data

Now that you've had a chance to make a few submissions, it's the appropriate time to inform you of the ISFDB standards of sourcing and verifying data.

  1. If you are working from the publication itself, leave a message in the "Note to Moderator" field informing us of that, even something as simple as "I have the book" or "Book at hand". After the submission is accepted, you should then do a primary verification of the record (instructions are linked in the Welcome section above).
  2. If you are not working from the publication, but from a secondary source, you must record the source for your information in the record's "Note" field. This is required whether you are adding a new publication or updating a current record.

Creating a new line in a record's note field (line breaks)

Take a look at how the second sentence in the note field of this record is one long line, even though when you added two new notes they looked like they were on separate lines in the submission. The software doesn't recognize a simple keyboard entry for the next line in the note field. You have to use HTML to create a new line. So enter <br> at the end of the sentence when you want to start a new line. (When you update the above record, look at how the first two lines are separated.) Thanks. Dating SFBC editions

I accepted the submission adding a note to this record, but reverted the date back to July 1991, giving the source of the date in the note field. Here's a link to a page which can help you source dates for SFBC printings. And here is the first page of the ISFDB wiki for SFBC selections from 1953 to today. Always be sure to note the source for any data that's not present in the actual book. SFBC printings are particularly hard to source data for so they have their own entry standards. Thanks.
