Welcome!
Hello, MSCollins, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- Help pages
- Field-by-field guide to entering new publications into the database
- Help:Getting Started
- What the ISFDB Wiki is for
- FAQ
- Wiki editing help - Tips on how to use the wiki-specific features when editing wiki pages.
- Wiki Conventions - How things are usually done on this wiki.
- Help:How to upload images to the ISFDB wiki
Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.
Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.
I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:19, 1 July 2021 (EDT)
A couple tips based on your submissions
Thanks for joining us here on ISFDB. Here are a couple tips based on your submissions:
- When entering Amazon.com URLs for cover images, remove all the formatting content from the final file name. For example, enter
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51pqro1lZYL.jpginstead ofhttps://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51pqro1lZYL._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg(remove the._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_part of the URL). - There is no need to include the URL to the Amazon.com entry in the Web page field as the ISFDB software will create a link automatically based on the ISBN or ASIN entered for the publication.
- The publication notes field is for notes about the publication itself. If you are one of the contributors, there is no need to indicate that in the publication note (though we do appreciate you joining us and adding the publication to the database).
- If you have a copy (which you probably do, as a contributor), you can add yourself as a primary verifier of the publication. When viewing the publication page (not the title page), click on the "Verify This Pub" link in the Editing Tools section of the left menu bar, then follow the directions on that page.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 12:32, 1 July 2021 (EDT)
Thank you, I have aimed to try and take this on board. Have a nice day! - Michael MSCollins 05:45, 11 October 2021 (EDT)
By the Dying Tree
I fixed a few things (missing currency symbol, fixed link for the cover, format, goodreads link, capitalization) here but you had set separate dates for most of the stories. When this is done, one of the following things need to happen:
- A note needs to be added into the title record to explain where this date is coming from (first publication notes basically)
or
- Add the book/magazine containing the story.
If no answer is provided in a few days and these are not updated, the stories dates will be changed to the date of the collection and then can be updated and fixed once one of the above two actions are taken for each. Thanks! Annie 14:50, 8 October 2021 (EDT)
- Hello! - I have added one "note", for The Underground, hopefully in the correct place, as a sort of test. Is this what you mean? Most of the stories in By The Dying Tree were re-published from earlier sources going back to my uni days. Many of those original sources long wiped out by the internet now, but in adding to any of the records, I tried to be as accurate as possible. Best wishes! - Michael MSCollins 05:45, 11 October 2021 (EDT)
- Yep, that is one way to solve it - add notes. The better way is to add the missing publications but that works as well.
- However - let's look at this one. The statement says "First published by Static Movement magazine in 2010" but the date is 2009-00-00. One of those dates is wrong :) So is is 2009 or 2010? Thanks! We date based on publication, not based on when it was written or copyrighted. Annie 18:42, 12 October 2021 (EDT)
2010 is the correct date. 2009 was a research error I tried to fix when the more accurate date came up. Thanks. Many of the earlier publications are "lost in the mists of time" by now. I have only added the dates to the collection to be accurate that they were reprints. MSCollins 07:06, 25 October 2021 (EDT)

If you discover any information that you do not know how/where to add to the DB, the best way is to post in Community Portal. Someone will handle from there - either ask more questions or add more info or work on the question.
In this case - they are already connected (see how it says "Used As Alternate Name By: Jo Thomas" at the top) - someone just had not finished updating the titles that went under the alternate name. I'd finished these edits now. You can do that as well in the future when you find one of these - they needed MakeVariant (to bring them to the canonical name page). Annie 11:49, 8 March 2022 (EST)
