Welcome!

Hello, Kletnik, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! BLongley 15:16, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Linking permission

Are you in a position to grant us permission to link to the images that you've added to the book published by Ridan Publishing? Otherwise we will have to remove the links. You have the option of uploading the images to our server if you can't grant us permission to deep-link to Ridan's website. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:11, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

All links to the Ridan server have been deleted, and replaced by links to images on Amazon. Mhhutchins 16:54, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Publication series vs. title series

I have updated the records that you submitted earlier giving the series "Soldier of the Legion" and "Griffin's Daughter" in the publication record. These are not publication series, but title series. To understand the difference read this help page. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:13, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

First name last name

All name credits should be entered as "FIRST NAME LAST NAME", so books by David Dalglish should be entered as by "David Dalglish". Not sure how you got the impression that it was the other way around. I'll accept your submissions, but change all of them to the standard form. Mhhutchins 01:47, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Price

Use the standard format for American currency. $9.99 instead of $9,99. I'll correct the errors. Mhhutchins 01:49, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Sourcing Data

You should note the source of your data when creating a new record for a pub. If you have a copy of the book, you can note in the "Note to Moderator" field that you're working from a copy in hand, and will be doing a primary verification of the record once it's accepted. If you don't have a copy, state the source of your data in the record's "Note" field. Mhhutchins 01:51, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

ISBN

Be sure to use the ISBN as stated on the book itself. In a couple of cases you entered the ISBN-10, which I changed to the ISBN-13. If these books actually had only the ISBN-10 (unusual for 2011), you can update the records. Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:57, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Image Uploads

When uploading cover images to the ISFDB server, it is best to wait until a record for the book has been created. Then you can use the semi-automated function that is linked to each publication record to upload that book's cover image (click on the "Upload Cover Scan" link and follow the directions.) By uploading images to the ISFDB wiki pages, as you did the nine images recently uploaded, you'll have to add an image license tag to each image file, something that would have been done for you if you'd used the "Upload Cover Scan" function. This license does two things: it will link the wiki image file back to the database record and it protects us by asserting our rights to maintain the image on our servers based on fair-use laws. Without the fair-use license tage, we would be open to any litigious copyright holder (as we rightfully should be.) I'll add the tag to the images that you uploaded and ask that you use the "Upload Cover Scan" function in the future. Of course, you can always use the "Upload file" function on the wiki side, but you must follow up by adding the license tags. Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:17, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Weight of Blood or The Weight of Blood

According to the cover image, the title of this book is The Weight of Blood. Which one is correct? Mhhutchins 02:20, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I've changed the record's title to The Weight of Blood based on the Amazon "Look-Inside" feature. Mhhutchins 17:06, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Small uploaded images vs. Amazon's larger images

I've noticed that after the first image, the later files are rather small images of the book covers. For example, your version is quite small when compared to Amazon's image. We have permission to link to Amazon's images, so it would be better to link their larger image to the record than the one you uploaded. Would you object to my doing that and deleting yours before I go to the trouble of adding license tags to each of your images? (I've already added a tag to the first file you uploaded.) Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:29, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I have deleted the smaller images that you uploaded to the ISFDB server and placed a link on each record to the larger images on the Amazon server. Mhhutchins 17:04, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Dates with only some pieces

Hi. A date (birth date, death date, publication date) must always be entered as eight digits with two dashes: YYYY-MM-DD. When you are entering a date for which you don't know some of the pieces, use zeroes for anything you don't know. A completely unknown date is "0000-00-00". For the case of Elspeth Cooper, where you know she was born in 1968 but neither the month nor the day, you would use 1968-00-00. The software is not very smart about omitted pieces, so if you enter just 1968 or 1968-01, you will get no error, but the date will not be stored and will be lost. I fixed Cooper's birthdate to have the -00-00 -- this is just for future reference. Thanks, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 11:29, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

The Time Cavern tweaks

Hi. I made a couple of small changes to The Time Cavern. I changed "Tod" A. Fonesca to "Todd" A. Fonesca, and "10.95$" to "$10.95". While researching the spelling of Fonesca's first name, I found a Look Inside entry on Amazon and used it to fill in the cover artist and also the publication month (I recorded the source of all of this in the Notes), and I made a link to the cover image. --MartyD 12:02, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Kate Elliott

I put your update on hold. You submitted another birth place for this author. Do you have any other source than wikipedia for this change? (As I read the wikipedia page there is no mention of the actual birthplace of Kate Elliott, it is only said that she is a native of Junction City, which means IMHO only that she grew up there). If you have another source, let us know it, otherwise I am inclined to reject it. Stonecreek 15:16, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

The submission also removed all of the webpage links...inadvertently, I hope. Mhhutchins 16:50, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
This bio gives the birthplace as Iowa, and may be the source for our data. Looking at the messages above, it seems that Kletnik has not found his user talk page. Mhhutchins 16:57, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll reject the submission. Stonecreek 17:55, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Good call. The rejection may lead him to the ISFDB wiki and his user talk page. Mhhutchins 18:35, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
