Welcome!

Hello, KeithVlasak, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --MartyD 00:18, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Providing info

Hi, and welcome. Please add/edit as much as you'd like. The detailed note you wrote on your submission is still available here, if you want to copy any of it. If you go to your author page at Keith Vlasak, you can click on the Bio and Author links to create pages for biographical and bibliographical notes. If you need any help, just ask (see above links, too). Reply here by editing this section and indenting your reply with a colon at the beginning of each block of text (one colon per level of indentation). Thanks. --MartyD 00:27, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Have Amber -- Will Travel

Hello KeithVlasak. You did all right concerning the "Source of the data" field, as long as you own a copy of the book (which I suppose you do, since you are its author) and are able to use it to check the info. As many editors work from secondary sources (on line libraries, publisher's site, Amazon data, other SF data bases, etc.), these different cases have (normally) been forseen, and the sources used are (or should be, anyway) given in the notes. Thanks for your edits, Linguist 09:05, 22 August 2016 (UTC).

I have put your next submission on hold, because I am not sure what the situation really is : again, if you own a copy of the book, the record of which you have just just submitted, then you just need to choose the option "I own this publication" (even if the same data can be found on other websites, including the author's).
I have put the rest of the submissions on hold for the same reason, plus one ore two other things : in the ebook record, you didn't put the correct ISBN number in the corresponding field. As for the last one (Visiting), what you should do is : 1) enter each story separately under "Regular Titles"; 2) Once the submission is approved, you can add the synopsis of each story on its title page. In my opinion, the title of the collection could just be Visiting, and the other info on the cover indicated in the notes. Finally, the "Note from the Author" does not belong here, but could be transferred to your personal page, or to the "Biography" or "Bibliographic Comments" of your Author Record. Thanks for responding, I'll keep your submissions on hold until then. Linguist 09:34, 22 August 2016 (UTC).
Hello KeithVlasak. As far as correcting held up submissions is concerned, you can't ! The usual procedure consists in exchanging views or information with the moderator (this is what I meant by "Thanks for responding"), who then unholds (for correction), approves or rejects the submission. This usually avoids retyping / reentering data, as you have done, and saves time. But don't worry, learning the ropes does take a bit of time :o). Linguist 08:54, 24 August 2016 (UTC).
I have somewhat refurbished this pub record : the cover designer is usually indicated in the notes, the artist's field being restricted to the actual "artist". Furthermore, you have to limit the data to the name and exceptionally some disambiguating detail : here, David Roberts (1796-1864), as there is already another (modern) David Roberts in the database. These are things you should always check before entering a name in a field. A new author record is then automatically created, where you can add biographical elements if you are so inclined (I have just done it). Filling up the Cover Art fields also creates a title record, where you can add such notes as you had included earlier in the author's field. I have transferred them there.
I have also slightly edited the synopsis here, as it should limit itself to a factual summary of the story, leaving out any judgement of value, praise or criticism. Linguist 09:13, 24 August 2016 (UTC).

Visiting

I have approved your new submission of Visiting, and cancelled the previous one. See the result here. You can now click on each title and add the corresponding synopsis if you so wish. Linguist 09:36, 24 August 2016 (UTC).

Just one thing : I suppose you also own this copy. Just mark it "Primary" by clicking on "Verify This Pub" on the left margin, and then "Primary". Linguist 12:36, 24 August 2016 (UTC).

Merging / Add Publication

Merging. — Now you have four pubs bearing the same title, and — I suppose — corresponding to the same text. What we want is just one title, corresponding to the four different publications. What you have to do now is to merge the identical titles. Click on "Check for Duplicate Titles", and you will see that there are actually more than that. Indicate by a check (just click in the boxes) what you want to merge. Be careful not to merge different entities (i.e., for instance, NOVEL and COVERART, or COLLECTION and COVER ART). You just want to merge what is identical (NOVEL with NOVEL, SHORTFICTION with SHORTFICTION, COVERART with COVERART, etc.). I'll let you do it that so you can see how it works. Linguist 12:44, 24 August 2016 (UTC).

Add Publication. — You could not avoid creating different titles, as I hadn't approved them. Once a title exists, in order to add more publications by the same title (and with the same content), just go to the title, and click on "Add Publication to This Title" (left margin). This will create a publication that will automatically merge with the previous one, and be displayed under the same title. Linguist 12:49, 24 August 2016 (UTC).
I have approved your merging of the four Have Amber -- Will Travel titles, but this, for technical reasons, resulted in the maintaining of the shorter synopsis. I have preserved the longer one, and replaced it on title level. I hope this is what you wanted. Linguist 13:57, 24 August 2016 (UTC).
If I understand this ... if I edit this it is the way to reply to you to ask a question or clarify what I understand (but I do not know).
In merging titles. I'm sure I did the novel editions and cover art correctly. What I would not want to merge are the magazine editions of a couple of stories with the collection edition where the same stories appear. The magazine set actually resembles the few that were picked up and listed in Locus at the time and which could have been uploaded here by the editor/publishers who originally printed them. The listing in the collection was just how you told me I could list the stories that were in the collection (and then add descriptions there later). So, I would leave those unmerged or, what I'm asking, I could merge them to the original magazine publications, which are the earlier dates anyways (I mean that that would be quite fine with me and eliminate duplicate listings ... but would that remove them from the collection, Visiting)?
On Amber, I thought I was selecting the shorter synopsis, but only because I forgot that what's there is only for reference and doesn't allow me to select the longer one if I wanted to. I'm sure it doesn't matter.
I'm sure I'll get the hang of all this as I work more within, but in the meantime, I appreciate the patience! KeithVlasak 14:06, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
You did all right so far ! What remains to be merged is here. I didn't do it so you could try your hand at it yourself. Merging titles doesn't remove them from collections, the stories will just appear under the same title in the magazines and the collections. If the magazine editions are really different from the collection ones, then you can create different titles (by inserting something like "second version" after a title), but this is usually not done, unless the rewriting is really complete. What you can do is indicate in the notes of the collection that some short stories have been revised, if this is the case. Linguist 14:32, 24 August 2016 (UTC).

Re Visiting

I noticed that you did not PV (primary verify) this collection. Could you please do so (as users might wonder where the data comes from) ?

You haven't added the synopses you had written earlier to the corresponding stories. You can still do it by clicking on each story title and filling in the synopsis field. I can also do it for you, if you prefer, but I have to know… Thanks for your contributions, anyway. Linguist 08:48, 25 August 2016 (UTC).
I hope that I successfully verified that I do, yes, own a copy (and I am the author). I never saw the "Verify This Pub" on the left (or anywhere) until I clicked on the "here" that you added. Thank you. I will add the individual descriptions, which are already written and just need to be entered. I don't know how to do it yet, but expect I can figure it out when I'm ready to spend the time doing the data entry. I will learn my way around and have more work to post and verify. I really appreciate this section, which I can go to and read over and over again and click on things and see where that takes me. It especially is appreciated for the link to my works which is way faster than going to the Main Page and searching through authors! Thank you for your help and sorry if it takes me a little time to do what I need to. It's pleasing when I do it right and see the results that I have!KeithVlasak 02:13, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
You PVed all right. As far as adding the synopses is concerned, it's very simple : once you are on the Visiting pub page, just click successively on each story title : that leads you to the story title page. You then click on "Edit Title Data" (left margin, under "Editing tools"), and place your text in the corresponding "Synopsis" box. You then submit the edit by clicking on "Submit data" (bottom left).
Two little hints : 1) when you answer in an exchange, don't forget to add another colon at the beginning of the paragraph, so as to create an indentation (it makes the whole thing more readable); 2) in order to go straight to all your titles, just type your author's name into the "Search the database" box and click "Go". Once you are on it, you can add the page address to your favourites on your computer. You can also stick a list of links to the titles you want on your personal User Page, like Visiting, for instance. Linguist 08:47, 28 August 2016 (UTC).
