Welcome!

Hello, JohnHoward, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:54, 16 March 2023 (EDT)

Fearful Banner/Fearful Barrier

Hi JohnHoward -

I'm holding your submission to change the title of Fearful Banner to "Fearful Barrier". Could you provide us with your source for making this change? I do see that the linked Worldcat record as the title as "Fearful Barrier". However, both Tuck and Miller/Contento have it as "Fearful Banner". I also see various websites referring to either title. Do you perhaps have a copy of Worlds at War? Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 09:50, 17 April 2023 (EDT)

Hi Ron, Yes, I have a copy of the book. I could take some photos of the relevant pages if that would be useful. All best, John JohnHoward (talk) 10:21, 17 April 2023 (EDT)

Hi John - Thanks for the quick response. No need to provide photos. If you're working from a copy of the book, that's enough. I've approved your edit. Thanks again. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 10:30, 17 April 2023 (EDT)
Uploaded cover was too small so I uploaded a new one from some weird site called Look and Learn, afterwards noticing they slapped a big watermark across it, so replaced that with the cover on SFE. Also, https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/g-rayer-worlds-war-british-mens-1865949604; I have 2 suggestions, adding Company to the publisher and noting price is on the spine. --Username (talk) 11:40, 17 April 2023 (EDT)
Thanks, Ron. And yes, adopting the two latest suggestions would be good. All best, John JohnHoward (talk) 12:18, 17 April 2023 (EDT)
https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/se.cgi?arg=john+howard&type=Name; Which one, if any, are you? --Username (talk) 12:27, 17 April 2023 (EDT)
The 'London, England, UK' one. JohnHoward (talk) 12:49, 17 April 2023 (EDT)
Thanks; you may want to add a photo or anything else you see fit. Archive.org recently uploaded ex-library copies from Dublin, Ireland of the 2014 Swan River Press edition of The Silver Voices and the 2013 Swan River Press edition of Written by Daylight; I've added links in edits here to both and they should be approved sometime soon. --Username (talk) 10:23, 18 April 2023 (EDT)

Thank you - I must take some time to look at my page! JohnHoward (talk) 17:42, 18 April 2023 (EDT)

Challenge of the Stars

I'm holding this submission. I don't doubt the correctness of the change. Changes to primary verified publications must be discussed. Post on the affected PV's talk pages at Mavmaramis and Pete Young. Thanks, John Scifibones 14:52, 8 March 2024 (EST)

Thank you, I've done that. JohnHoward (talk) 13:28, 11 March 2024 (EDT)
Thanks, I've seen the message and approve. PeteYoung (talk) 13:29, 22 March 2024 (EDT)
Approved, John Scifibones 15:14, 22 March 2024 (EDT)
Thank you both. JohnHoward (talk) 04:40, 25 March 2024 (EDT)

Alan Hunter

Regarding this submission, this submission, and this submission: Thank you for finding this issue. However, as Hunter is the credit used in the magazine, we leave the entries in the magazine as Hunter, but change the parent record from Mel Hunter to Alan Hunter. As can be seen at Hunter, it is marked as being used by both Alan Hunter and Mel Hunter. These records were varianted to the wrong one. I have made the appropriate changes. Please let me know if the explanation was not clear. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:20, 9 March 2024 (EST)

Thank you for letting me know. That's fine. JohnHoward (talk) 13:15, 11 March 2024 (EDT)

The Dream Archipelago

Regarding this submission: This seems a duplicate entry for this pub. Is there something different with your version that you did not indicate in the submission? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:57, 10 March 2024 (EDT)

Thank you for your comment. Yes, as I mentioned in my submission the edition I wish to add has more stories and is described "Revised and extended edition" on the cover. So it is not a duplicate edition. I can take a photo of the cover and ToC if that would be helpful. JohnHoward (talk) 13:15, 11 March 2024 (EDT)
The publication date in your submission is the same date as the existing record. It is unlikely that they used the same ISBN to issue two editions in the same year. So most likely either 1) the current ISFDB record is wrong; or 2) you have a later edition. Does your publication's copyright page state a 2009 printing or does it indicate a later printing? If it only mentions 2009, then the ISFDB record would be incorrect and you have the same publication. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:07, 13 March 2024 (EDT)

Thank you for this The copyright page states 'This edition first published 2009' but indicates a second printing. The ISBN is the same as that on the edition already of ISFDB, so perhaps it was reused for the expanded edition? JohnHoward (talk) 13:04, 14 March 2024 (EDT)

Yes, that is possible. We do create separate records for different printings. However, if the later printing does not specify a date, we leave it undated. We also record the printing number in the pub botes. I have accepted the submission, but updated the date and pub notes as per above. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:25, 15 March 2024 (EDT)
