Welcome!

Hello, Jessnevins, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

Sourcing data from other records

When sourcing data from other records, it is preferred that you use the format "Source: 12345", and linking it if it's an online record. For example, enter a record from WorldCat/OCLC as "OCLC: 12345", Library of Congress record as "LCCN: 12345", etc. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 01:18, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Dumb Foxglove, and Other Stories

Hello, I've put your submission for this collection on hold. Can you be more precise about its spec-fic content. Neither book nor author appears (for example) in Bleiler or Bailey. Thanks. Hauck 17:06, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Approved, non spec-fic texts removed. Hauck 13:25, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Title standards

I accepted the submission adding this record but changed the title from Brothers of Peril a story of old Newfoundland to Brothers of Peril: A Story of Old Newfoundland, based on ISFDB titling standards. Subtitles are separated from the main title with a colon and space, and standard capitalization rules apply (see "Case" subsection of this help page. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:13, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

A World Without a Child

Submission adding this record was accepted but several changes had to be made for it to conform to ISFDB standards. (Those standards are given in the help pages which are linked in the Welcome section above, the most important of which is a field-by-field guide for creating publication records on the ISFDB.)

  • Title was changed from "A world without a child : a story for women and for men" to "A World Without a Child: A Story for Women and for Men" using the same standards as explained in an earlier post.
  • The publication type was changed from NOVEL to CHAPBOOK, since at 91 pages this is not novel length (more than 40,000 words).

Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 17:29, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Artist credit

I've had to make corrections in the "Artist" field credits of this record and this one. For ISFDB purposes, that field should be used only for the cover artist. (Also, co-artists should be credited separately and not as one.) I've added content records typed as INTERIORART for the frontispieces by the Kinneys. BTW, OCLC rarely gives cover art credit. Any mention of illustrator or artist is invariably for interior work, not cover work.

Please look over the publication records which you have submitted and for which I have made changes to make them conform to ISFDB standards, and use them as a guide for future submissions. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 21:08, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Author credits and CHAPBOOKs

It is ISFDB policy to record the author of a publication as it is credited on the work's title page. If you use a secondary source for your data, you must be sure that the source gives the correct title page credit. For example, if you use OCLC for your data, you should go to the field labeled "Responsibility" where the stated author is credited. Do not use the "Author" field of an OCLC record to give the credit to an ISFDB record's "Author" field.

In the case of When Theodore Is King, the publication record should be credited to "Viter Strikeshouler" as indicated in the "Responsibility" field of this OCLC record.

One more thing, for ISFDB purposes, the CHAPBOOK type is used for publications which contain a single work of fiction less than 40K words or a single poem. This means that a content record typed as SHORTFICTION or POEM must be added to each CHAPBOOK record.

Would you like to make the corrections in this record or would you prefer that I do it? (A response is necessary, please.) Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 18:20, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

It also appears that the title is misspelled ("vrom" for "from"). Mhhutchins|talk 18:26, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
You can do it--I'm not sure I'd get it right. Thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jessnevins (talkcontribs) .
I'll do it then. Please look over the record and use it as a guide for future records for CHAPBOOK-typed publications. Mhhutchins|talk 20:35, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
Don't forget to end all posts on wiki pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your name and the date. Mhhutchins|talk 21:02, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Author credit format

This publication's author was entered as "Everett, Francis". The author's name should be in the same order as the book as credited. I've corrected it to "Francis Everett". Mhhutchins|talk 20:33, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Restless Spirits

I have made the following changes to this record based on ISFDB standards:

  • Publication Date field was changed to add the date of publication based on the Amazon listing.
  • Page Count field was changed from "328" to "x+316" based on the OCLC record.
  • Pub Format/Binding field was changed from "pb" to "tp" based on the OCLC listing which gives the height as 23 cm.
  • ISBN field was changed from "978-1-55849-056-7" to "1-55849-056-6" based on the OCLC listing. A book published in 1996 would only have an ISBN-10.
  • Price field was cleared and the current price on Amazon was moved to the Note field. It's not likely that a book in print for almost 20 years has the original publication price. (Also, don't forget to add the currency when entering the Price field.)

I also added a link to the cover image on Amazon and the cover art credit based on the back cover image.

As a rule, it is better not to use Amazon as a data source for books more than ten years old. You should also not use book dealer listings unless they are your only source. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins|talk 22:22, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

The Shell of Sense : Collected Ghost Stories of Olivia Howard Dunbar

Hello, I've approved your submission but made some changes to conform to our standards:

  • regularized title (dropped space before :).
  • changed NONFICTION records to ESSAY (NONFICTION is for booklength works only).
  • merged your entered works with those already preent in the db (two of them).

The result is here. Hauck 15:14, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Your bibliography

I fixed two titles in your own bibliography

capital ... "The" League ... within nonfiction title, as that refers to series title The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen listed immediately above it
capital ... "Is" No Trick ... within essay title, as that short word is a verb

I suggest but don't change two more

capital ... "To" Pass ... within shortfiction title, as that short word is not a preposition here
capital ... "The" Encyclopedia ... within shortfiction title, as that probably refers to book title The Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana listed under the Nonfiction heading

Homefront Horrors

Second new section presuming that you are ISFDB Author Jess Nevins, as I overlooked to say above. Of course you may be happy to work on this anyway. --Pwendt

Hi. You verified the print edition of your 2016 ANTHOLOGY T2053974. I guess that you created the records for both eds., but that doesn't matter here. Today I added a Title Note and submitted improvement of our record of the ebook format. In particular, I submit your introduction as new ESSAY content "Introduction: Neglected Masters (Homefront Horrors)".

The latter remains in the queue. Perhaps that will be rejected, in favor of naming the ESSAY by our standard:

Introduction (Homefront Horrors: Frights Away from the Front Lines, 1914-1918)

Anyway you should add it to the print ed. at page vii. --Pwendt|talk 19:58, 22 February 2018 (EST)
