Contacting Aliens: An Illustrated Guide to David Brin's Uplift Universe

I'm reaching out to the primary verifiers of the title because I believe it should be re-categorized from "Nonfiction" to "Collection" and I need to gain a consensus. You're marked as a verifier of the 2002 trade paperback edition of Contacting Aliens: An Illustrated Guide to David Brin's Uplift Universe. I think that "Collection" is a better descriptor for the work as it is written in the style of an in-universe guidebook and the contents are all short, encyclopedic entries about fictional alien species and cultures. (Side note, I'm not sure if I am setting up a new topic on your page correctly - my apologies if I've done so incorrectly.) Leporidae (talk) 12:11, 13 February 2023 (EST)Leporidae

My verification was a transient verification (meaning I only had the book temporary). I don't recall enough about it to weigh in - I'm fine either way. Nonfiction vs fiction for "in universe" writing is a borderline case where valid arguments can usually be made either way. I don't have a strong opinion on it. Though, if you are going to change it to collection, the individual contents should be entered. And yes, you created a new section correctly. The "Add topic" button at the top of the screen will work on any talk page. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:13, 13 February 2023 (EST)
Thanks for the quick response. I own a copy of the book, so I would be able to tackle adding the individual contents as needed. Leporidae (talk) 10:54, 14 February 2023 (EST)Leporidae

The Epic of Gilgamesh

Hello JLaTondre!

Way back in 2020 you wanted to fix how The Epic of Gilgamesh is presented in the database, and I'd like to return to this discussion, because I think that is extremely wrong to present this work as a "Novel". I have sent to Anniemod how I would like to change it: what do you think? Thanks, ErickSoares3 (talk) 06:11, 4 March 2023 (EST)

I have not read the book so I do not have opinion on that change. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:09, 4 March 2023 (EST)

Dragon's Eye; I was looking for St. Patrick's Day-related stuff and came across Conly's work in this book; I think it should be a poem. Also, most of the stories don't have lengths; Baen's site has first 3 stories readable, 2nd and 3rd stories' text was entered on and both are 9,000+ words, novelettes, but I can't say for sure about the rest. I've made an edit just adding uploaded-in-2021 link and LCCN ID. --Username (talk) 08:47, 17 March 2023 (EDT)

Edit approved. I changed "Saint Patrick's Last Snake" to a poem. Thanks for pointing that out. As for lengths, feel free to update as you see fit. I'm not one for estimating based on counting words on a page. Unless there is an electronic version to run through a word counter, I don't bother with lengths. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:18, 17 March 2023 (EDT)

ISFDB File: space for images

Cover image File:PPPNTHSTHS1970.jpg --Pippi VSB 1970, here-- is on my list to pursue upon return to work here. I see you have cleaned up that page in the meantime by a simple delete of "Licensing" heading and its {Cover image data} template. I believe that I followed Help: instruction that didn't mention "Summary" or "Licensing", nor that the template might be duplicated. Is yours an expected final step, before when the upload has been executed properly? Should the "Licensing" heading sometime be used, with its version of the template alongside (splitting the content data) or instead of the "Summary"? Some pages use the template without any heading.

(This was the first image I have added to ISFDB, and may have been the first File: page that I have edited.) --Pwendt|talk 18:42, 2 April 2023 (EDT)

When using the "Upload new cover scan" from a publication page, the software will automatically add a licensing template with all the fields completed. You only need to manually select a licensing template when you are uploading directly to the wiki (for example, when adding author photographs). If you manually select a license template, it will add the template, but you will need to then edit to fill in the fields. Since you manually selected a licensing template when using the "Upload new cover scan" option, it added the automatic filled in license template and also the incomplete license template (which had to be deleted). So when using "Upload new cover scan", do not select a license template. When not using "Upload new cover scan", select a license template and then added the correct parameters. Hope that was a clear enough explanation. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:29, 5 April 2023 (EDT)

Dracula TP; This should be a HC, I think, based on flaps and other similarly priced Walker books in 2010 on ISFDB being HC. --Username (talk) 17:04, 23 May 2023 (EDT)

I will have to dig that one out. It may take a couple days. I remember it as a soft cover, but I will double check. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:39, 24 May 2023 (EDT)
It is tp. The flaps are not from a dust jacket. Instead, the publisher extended the paper cover wider than the book and folded it over. I added a pub note explaining this. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:57, 2 June 2023 (EDT)

Fantasy 2002; See this message in case you agree those things need changing/adding because active PV rarely responds. --Username (talk) 09:28, 29 May 2023 (EDT)

The PV has updated the record. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:58, 2 June 2023 (EDT)

VSftAS;; It says Metro Books on copyright page with a $6.98 price in back cover barcode. ISFDB has 5 books by Metro Books and 2 by MetroBooks. --Username (talk) 13:03, 29 May 2023 (EDT)

Cloned a record for the fourth printing, updated the publisher for the first printing, and added notes. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:00, 2 June 2023 (EDT)

Highwaymen; While adding link I also fixed title, it's & Rogues. --Username (talk) 14:19, 4 August 2023 (EDT)

Approved. Thanks for finding. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:13, 5 August 2023 (EDT)

(The) Weight of Light

You're the PV of Weight of Light. The HTML version doesn't have "The" before the rest of the title. However, all the other versions do have "The" at the beginning. Should we create a variant for the webpage (HTML) version, or just add a note indicating that difference? I have the epub, Apple books, PDF, and print versions of this book, and all of those have "The" in the title. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:39, 17 August 2023 (EDT)

I added the "The" as I have the MOBI edition also and then merged the title record with the tp edition. I removed "Interior art credit per HTML version" as looking at the MOBI version, the artists are credited in it also. Regarding note or variant, I could go either way. I guess I would lean toward the note, but not a strong opinion. Do you have a preference. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:18, 18 August 2023 (EDT)
I'd also lean toward the note, since that's the only difference I can see. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 21:41, 21 August 2023 (EDT)
Hi, there's the one essay "Designing in Sunlight" by multiple authors in both of the verified copies, but one lists Joshua Loughman, the other Loshua Loughman (I'd think the first is correct, but please do check it). Christian Stonecreek (talk) 02:16, 23 August 2023 (EDT)
Also, the essay by Samantha Janko is titled differently in the two entries. Christian Stonecreek (talk) 04:34, 23 August 2023 (EDT)
I double checked the ebook and the record matches the publication. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:31, 23 August 2023 (EDT)

Dalby Tiger;; Price really is £9.95. Notes are in your style so if you want to add price and where it came from that's OK because I'm off most editing until October otherwise I'd do it myself. EDIT: I think the last word in note should be edition, not addition. There's also a British book by Tiger Books on ISFDB; related to this Tiger, maybe? --Username (talk) 13:41, 17 September 2023 (EDT)

I added a note about the price, thanks. "Addition" is correct. The sticker is a latter addition to the book; not that the book is a latter edition. I clarified the wording so hopefully that is clearer. It is possible Tiger Books and Tiger Books International are the same. You may want to ask Mavmaramis to double check his book. -- JLaTondre (talk) 14:12, 17 September 2023 (EDT)
OK. What's the rule for adding the price to the record's "price" field outside of just the note? Because it's not there. Should I add it myself? --Username (talk) 17:08, 17 September 2023 (EDT)
Fixed it. I missed it wasn't entered. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:00, 17 September 2023 (EDT)

Held Submission

Hi JLaTondre

You may have missed my response to your question. The same editor has submitted a duplicate prompting a further question. You can go ahead and approve the first submission. I've asked the other editor to reject the second as a duplicate. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 15:53, 20 September 2023 (EDT)

Approved. Thanks for pinging me. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:38, 20 September 2023 (EDT)

Bradbury Chronicles; I noticed your copy was transient so letting you know there's this copy and also a 3rd printing,, which I'm not sure about because PV, who hasn't left a message on their page for 5 years, didn't specify printing. The date can't be correct because it's the same as the first printing but the price does match. Also, the P.S. in the titles should probably be removed because that's an extra section in the later editions, not actually part of the title. --Username (talk) 08:28, 4 October 2023 (EDT)

Edit approved. I will look into the other edition & update that in next couple of days. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:58, 4 October 2023 (EDT)
Harper Perennial edition updated. -- JLaTondre (talk) 09:16, 7 October 2023 (EDT)

CoFL; We crossed edits. I corrected title (in 3 places), added OCLC, and cleaned up a couple of words in one line of the notes. --Username (talk) 19:56, 4 October 2023 (EDT)

Please do not immediately edit works that have just been submitted. Editors may still be working on them. I rejected the your submission as it would have changed back items that had already been corrected. I then fixed the title and typo. Thanks for finding those. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:04, 4 October 2023 (EDT)
OK. You seem to be done so I added OCLC in a new edit and fixed a typo in your Gutenberg edition's note. --Username (talk) 20:22, 4 October 2023 (EDT)

Gothic Tales; This is actually 3rd printing of 2009 ed. as defined by 3 at bottom of copyright page. --Username (talk) 19:45, 6 October 2023 (EDT)

Correct. That is what the quoted printing history states. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:27, 7 October 2023 (EDT)

Vampire Stories; There's also a Clydesdale edition,, if you're interested. --Username (talk) 17:50, 15 October 2023 (EDT)

I added the Clydesdale edition. That is an odd one. It has the Skyhorse copyright page including the ISBN of the Skyhorse edition. From what I could find, Clydesdale is a promotional imprint of Skyhorse. Maybe some type of remaindered edition? -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:09, 16 October 2023 (EDT)

Sword History; You entered Outlander because of its award but there was an earlier book with a slightly different spelling of the publisher so the 2 books should probably be combined under one publisher. --Username (talk) 11:56, 17 November 2023 (EST)

Combined under "&" version. The earlier book also used "&" per the Amazon Look Inside on the e-book version. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:40, 17 November 2023 (EST)

Firebirds Rising; I added link in a PENDING edit and I think page count should just be 530 with brackets removed from contents at the end because the numbers are clearly visible at the tops of the pages. --Username (talk) 17:34, 21 November 2023 (EST)

Accepted edit. I no longer have the pub so let's see what Ofearna responds with. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:14, 21 November 2023 (EST)

The Year's Best Science Fiction: Volume 2 hiya mate this is me first time hassling sanybody so sorry if i've bolloxed it again. you did the contents for this and it think it needs a few tweakettes looking at my copy. Airbody should be page 419. The greenblatt story is p 253 and i think the Esais story should be varianted as its all uppercase "GO. NOW. FIX." I wasnt sure if i should have done it meself and submitted it but as your a mod i thought id better give you the heads up —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Faustus (talkcontribs) .

From the history, it looks like I added the contents based on Amazon. Hifrommike65 verified the pub after that. Since it is verified by an active verifier, you should post a note on User talk:Hifrommike65 and ask him to check the page numbers in his copy. When pubs are verified, it is ISFDB policy to check with the verifier. The vast majority of time it turns out to be a database typo. However, once in awhile, it turns out there are different editions for which we need to create a new pub record. As for "Go. Now. Fix.", the ISFDB normalizes title case (see "Case" in this page) so we would not generally create a separate record based on all caps. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:49, 26 November 2023 (EST)
cheers mate got that

L. Dagstine Photo; Amazon "S" images are not supported according to the yellow warning on his submission page. Was there ever a discussion here about why that is and how to possibly fix it so they're supported? --Username (talk) 09:49, 17 December 2023 (EST)

That warning is a false positive. It is stating that there are unsupported formatting codes (see the 4th bullet under Amazon at ISFDB:Image linking permissions#List of sites granting permission), but there are no formatting codes in that image link. You are welcome to ask Ahasuerus about the warning and if there is anything that can be fixed. It has not been a big enough issue for me to bother doing so. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:37, 17 December 2023 (EST)
Oh, that's good to know because there's been many Amazon photos which I never used because the only one available was an "S" image; it would still be good to fix it because there probably have been other editors who saw the big yellow warning and cancelled their edits but I'm sure Ahasuerus already knows about it (I may even have mentioned it somewhere on the message boards long ago) and if he felt it was important he would have fixed it by now. It would be great except all Amazon sites seem to have gotten rid of their full slideshow of photos for those authors who provided several and all now default to a page with a single tiny photo on top which, if there's an author bio, enlarges next to it. Some of them, including, started doing that a while ago so I was going to foreign pages, usually Amazon Japan, where all photos were still available. Now none of them work as far as I can see. Amazon is terrible and getting worse but I think most people knew that already; the problem is they're the only game in town and this site needs them. Also, I stumbled across a TRIPOD site still currently online where this Dagstine guy offered a lot of his works; I added a link to it and links to a couple of stories which are on ISFDB. --Username (talk) 11:58, 17 December 2023 (EST)

Half a Life; I added link to Collier edition, it has the same subtitle as HC, I added "and Other Stories" to intro, art variant you made isn't needed anymore, I'll tell PV of Collier to add subtitle. --Username (talk) 10:35, 20 December 2023 (EST)

Pub edits approved. Title records merged. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:13, 20 December 2023 (EST)

Dodd, Mead Gallery of Horror; Your TP edit should be for the HC, copy on is HC, TP has different info on back cover, --Username (talk) 09:17, 22 December 2023 (EST)

Interesting. The Internet Archive's scan cover doesn't look like a hc. Though that is always hard to tell in scans. I found a copy via my library's intra-library exchange and I requested it. In the meantime, I moved the IA scan over to the hardcover and updated the sourcing on the tp. Once the intra-library exchange comes in, I will make any additional required changes. -- JLaTondre (talk) 07:20, 23 December 2023 (EST)
Received the hc edition from the library. The Internet Archive scan is not of the hardcover. The hardcover is plain blue (with reddish spine) hardcover with a dust jacket. The page layout is also different. In the hc, the first page (9) is on the right side and the last page (365) is on the left side. In the Internet Archive scan, the layout is the opposite. The Internet Archive scan is likely a library binding of the tp edition. I have made updates to both records. -- JLaTondre (talk) 15:54, 30 December 2023 (EST)

Hello, thank you for approving me edits.

For these two,

What does 'Forced' mean as the reason why they were rejected? (Although it looks like they were merged.) Should I do it differently next time?

Thanks again, Gareth --Interzone (talk) 15:56, 23 December 2023 (EST)

Oh, it looks like you did merges for those two, submissions, 5836405 and 5836406, a few hours after I submitted the merge? Should I have just left it and not merged them? --Interzone (talk) 16:01, 23 December 2023 (EST)
Forced occurs when the software can no longer process the submission. This usually happens when one of the records impacted by the submission no longer exists. A duplicate merge submission is one case that causes that. If you see something that needs merging, please continue to submit the merge. Editors will occasionally notice the same issues & we end up with duplicate submissions (especially when the queue is as long as it has been), but that is not guaranteed. -- JLaTondre (talk) 07:37, 24 December 2023 (EST)

Case History of Comrade V.; Should the note about price say Time, not New York Times? --Username (talk) 09:27, 26 December 2023 (EST)

Yes, thank you. Thanks for adding the IA link also. I should have included that. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:07, 26 December 2023 (EST)

The Big Book of Cyberpunk

Thank you for the welcome. I plan to gradually update the Table of Contents for the anthology, instead of submitting the full contents as one submission. There are a lot of stories (over 100) and, as it is my first submission, I hope to gradually 'get the ropes' as I add the entries and encounter cases like adding translators notes or adding new short story entries for stories not already in the ISFDB.

I hope this is okay.

SohKamYung (talk) 06:03, 31 December 2023 (EST)

Yes, that is fine. A few suggestions:
  • In your submissions, please add a comment in the moderator notes stating you are partially adding contents and plan to continue. That will reduce any confusion / questions.
  • Once you are done adding them, please remove the incomplete template from the pub notes.
  • Since you are adding stories already in the database, please consider using the Import Content option. You would use Option 2 on the import screen and use links to the existing ISFDB story records. When you edit a pub to add contents, it creates new title records that have to be merged with the existing ones. I have merged the current ones.
We appreciate your submissions & hope you will continue to contribute. ISFDB has some conventions that need learning so please check out the help links in the welcome message above. And let us know if you have any questions (either myself, another moderator, or the ISFDB:Help desk). -- JLaTondre (talk) 07:55, 31 December 2023 (EST)
