Welcome!

Hello, IanPercival, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Annie 17:09, 15 January 2021 (EST)

Welcome to the fun!

Just saying welcome again :) Have fun with the DB. Annie 17:10, 15 January 2021 (EST)

Deathworld

Hi Ian,

Can you confirm that the title is "Deathworld 1" on the TITLE page (not the copyright page and not the cover). Thanks! Annie 17:15, 16 January 2021 (EST)

Hi Annie
Yes the Cover has Deathworld 1
The Spine AND the Title page - there are 3 books in the series Deathwork 1, 2, 3 - the other 2 are correctly entered - just this one is not —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IanPercival (talkcontribs) .

So... as it turned out we already have quite a few of those named properly: now here which had been just... left inside of the big title. Now I split them out and varianted as per the rules and I will work with the other owners of Sphere books to see if any of the others need also moving. Thanks for identifying this mess.
For the future - if there is a difference between cover, spine, copyright page and title page, we use the title page and we note the difference on the other 3 in the notes. In this case they were obviously the same so no notes to be added. As for why the others were correctly published - timing - by the second volume, everyone knows there is a second one. When the first one was published, it was not the case -- except for reprints which can decide between adding or not 1. Annie 20:04, 16 January 2021 (EST)

White Gold Wielder

About this book - are you sure it is different from this one? Annie 17:19, 16 January 2021 (EST)

Hi Annie oops My apologies - sorry somehow missed that one! Please cancel the updates! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IanPercival (talkcontribs) .
Will do. Happens. :) Annie 17:36, 16 January 2021 (EST)
Same question about this submission and this book? Annie 17:22, 16 January 2021 (EST)
This one they are not the same - my one has a price of 2.95 for example and is a later reprint? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IanPercival (talkcontribs) .
A later reprint won't carry the same date though. What is the date in your book? As this one is not verified, it is possible that we just have a wrong price in the DB... Annie 17:36, 16 January 2021 (EST)
Hi Annie - So my Blue Adept has price 2.95
vreprinted 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 so maybe is the one you showed except yours has incorrect price and does not have good publish notes... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IanPercival (talkcontribs) .
Price probably came from Locus1 and it is possible that there was/is a typo. Book in hand beats everything and this one is not verified so cancel the clone and edit the book we have. If this is the correct reprint, just fix it :) Annie 17:44, 16 January 2021 (EST)
OK - so I'll just update what you have there then!IanPercival 17:58, 16 January 2021 (EST)
Hi Annie - so I submitted changes for the original page. No Idea where they got the Feb Publish month from so I just left that as is...IanPercival 18:05, 16 January 2021 (EST)
Locus1 - it has the months :) Approved the edit and added a line on Locus1 and the month. You can verify now. :) Annie 19:39, 16 January 2021 (EST)
About this one - the 1977 in the notes here sounds like a typo - the date is the correct 1976. Let me check with the PVs. Annie 17:25, 16 January 2021 (EST)
Yes I only added the new one as the dates were different - if just a typo on the original then fair enough.... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IanPercival (talkcontribs) .
Let me check with one of the PVs who seems to be around - if there is a difference in the pages, we need to note that :) On a separate note - please check the very first message on this page and see how to sign your messages (makes it easier to follow things. Annie 17:38, 16 January 2021 (EST)
oh sorry missed that - testing signing IanPercival 17:44, 16 January 2021 (EST)
No worries :) That's better. See how I am adding colons to make the conversation flow? That's a manual thing - so let's try that next time as well - one additional colon for an answer to a previous comment (compared to what you are answering to). :) Annie 17:46, 16 January 2021 (EST)
Confirmed typo on "Halcyon Drift" - see here. So let's cancel the clone, I had fixed the typo. Thanks for identifying it! Let me know if you want to cancel your old edit on your own or if you want me to (you can do it from Your Pending page. Annie 19:39, 16 January 2021 (EST)

Dune

This seems to be the same as existing Dune? Or am I missing a difference? If it is the same - edit the existing :) Annie 18:21, 17 January 2021 (EST)

I'm unsure if the same - My Publish history is lifted from the Copyright page and is slightly different - though looks like the original you are showing is incomplete anyway as no price shown. Up to you - if you want me to just update that original I'm fine with that! IanPercival 06:53, 18 January 2021 (EST)
Unless there were two printings in that month (which neither of the histories point to), I’d say it is the same one. Keep in mind that if a book is not PVed, the notes are usually based on notes in other editions - so they can be a bit imprecise. We try to always add the sources but especially with old records, it is not always clear. :) Annie 07:34, 18 January 2021 (EST)

Brontomek!

Regarding your note here: In such cases, you can go to an active PV Talk page and leave them a message to clarify. In this case, Dirk is around so I left a message here. Next time feel free to do the same on your own. If none of the PVs seems active, you can post in instead to see if someone else may have the book or can get access to it. Annie 18:27, 17 January 2021 (EST)

It was indeed a typo - now fixed. Annie 16:49, 18 January 2021 (EST)

Nightfall Two

This looks like this one? If so, just add the price and image and more notes if needed. If not, can you point me to the difference? :) Annie 18:31, 17 January 2021 (EST)

OK - wasnt sure how solid the original was - I'll just update the one you are showing then IanPercival 06:55, 18 January 2021 (EST)
Solid as in? I do not seen anything in your record that contradicts the one we have (besides the lack of price and cover which is just missing and not a contradiction). It is the duck principle - quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it most likely is a duck (same date and Isbn - very little chance it is not the same except for the rare cases of two printings in a month and then the copyright page somewhere should be saying so). Annie 07:39, 18 January 2021 (EST)

2001: A Space Odyssey

When you see "Title date after publication date" like here, that means that there is a title whose date needs adjusting. You can leave that to someone else of course but once your book is approved, someone WILL need to fix it so if you feel like doing it, you can submit the date change yourself when you do the clones. I had done that now here (we had the 10th impression as the first one we had in the DB with this cover, you added the 8th -- so the date goes earlier). Annie

Case and the Dreamer

Hi, Simona D'Achille has checked the archives and confirmed by email that her father Gino D'Achille painted the cover art of this. Horzel 15:55, 26 January 2021 (EST)

Hi - I just examined the book and can confirm the artist is not mentioned on the book itself. Looks like the same sort of art though so I'm fine with it! I'm relatively new to this - do you wantto make the updates or do you ned anything else from me?IanPercival 07:09, 27 January 2021 (EST)

Earthblood

I've uploaded a full wraparound cover for this. I'm going to add some notes viz "Price zone seems to have been overprinted in black (& white lettering)" and there appears to be text on the "wall" of the arena - EXTR[ ] AG [ ] Z ? O - what significance this lettering has I have no idea the [ ] indicates letters blocked by the two poles on back cover. Artist is likely to be the same one who did the cover art for this Laumer book but I wouldn't like to speculate except to say that it is almost certainly not Patrick Woodroffe. --Mavmaramis 14:32, 5 July 2021 (EDT)

Ocean on Top

Note for this states "no visible signature on the artwork" - in fact there is one (Bergen) left hand side under submarine above sphere logo. --Mavmaramis 13:20, 7 October 2021 (EDT)

Foundation and Empire / Second Foundation

You have PVd the Panther second 1973 printings of Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation. I will shortly be submitting new pub records for the Panther first 1973 printings. To distinguish them, I propose to update the publication month of your records to December and add a note: "The publication month of December is arbitrary so that this pub record is ordered correctly after the first 1973 printing" Are you OK with this?Teallach 18:04, 4 January 2022 (EST)

Just chiming in: We don't do arbitrary months - if we set a month in a record, it is because we KNOW this is the month. So if you try to do that, it will be rejected. The notes will differentiate the two publications. Just add a note that this is the first 1973 printing in yours - the list of printings already explains that the ones we have are the second 1973 printings. I know that it is annoying when looking at the list but we have a similar problem with non-dated reprints - we had been discussing making the printing a separate field so it can be used for the sorting - but it gets tricky so it did not go anywhere last time. Annie 18:12, 4 January 2022 (EST)
Annie - thanks for your quick reply and for pointing this out to me. I am a new editor but have used the ISFDb in read only mode for some time. I have come across several cases of arbitrary months used to sort printings so assumed this practice had been established by precedent. This is an example: Penguin Science Fiction. However, from your reply, I guess that it used to be permitted but, later, a decision was made to discontinue this usage. Is there an archived discussion post on the topic? If so, please point me to it; I would be interested to read it. Is it worth adding a note to an appropriate Help page? It might stop people like me trying to do it! Sorry if all this sounds like a gripe. It's not meant as such. I appreciate the need to conform to ISFDb policies and standards and I am trying to do so but it's hard. I've spent a LOT of time reading through help pages but they are labyrinthine. I presume things get easier after a bit of trial, error and experience.Teallach 10:45, 5 January 2022 (EST)

Bill, the Galactic Hero

The other price for this is for New Zealand not Austraila. --Mavmaramis (talk) 05:49, 15 October 2022 (EDT)

Asimov - Foundation's Edge

I'm retitling the Afterword here. The current title is the only outlier to all the others listed here. Kev. --BanjoKev (talk) 15:48, 6 January 2023 (EST)

Asimov - Foundation and Empire

To this 1973 printing, I'm adding to and reformatting the notes, all previous data preserved. Replacing current image with the correct one. Kev. --BanjoKev (talk) 02:25, 12 February 2023 (EST)

Captive Universe

this edition is identical to this edition. I'm going to submit a deletion request and move my verification to the later. --Mavmaramis (talk) 11:07, 29 May 2023 (EDT)
