Welcome!

Hello, Helixhamin, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 03:50, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Three Non-SF Books?

I've placed your submission of Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's & In Cold Blood as well as Carlton's Three in Paradise on hold. These don't seem to be speculative fiction and so don't meet our inclusion policy. Am I missing something? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 03:50, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

As it's been a couple of days, I've gone ahead and rejected these submissions. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:57, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
JLaTondre, Thanks, actually I must have mistaken a few issues. I have seen many books that would not fit speculative SF, so I assumed that authors that did write some would also have other books not based on pure speculative SF would also benefit by being more complete in their book list. I will take this to mind in the future. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Helixhamin (talkcontribs) .
There are specific rules about inclusion into the database, outlined here. See Rule #5. We add non-genre works by spec-fic writers (Jack Vance's mysteries), and spec-fic works by non-genre writers (Nabokov's Ada), but we don't enter non-genre works by non-genre writers (Nabokov's Lolita). In some cases, it's hard to determine when an author has reached "a certain threshold", but in the case of Truman Capote, he could never be considered a spec-fic writer. Dragon's Tribute

I accepted the addition of Margaret L. Carter's Dragon's Tribute. However, I did make some changes:

  1. The publisher field should be the company's name only - in this case "Ellora’s Cave" and not "An Ellora's Cave publication".
  2. The publication format should be "tp" and not "Trade Paperback" - see the help
  3. I changed the image link to Amazon. We can only link to sites which have explicitly given us permission. - see the help
  4. I moved the link to the publisher's site from the Wikipedia field to the web page field.

The conventions can take a bit to get up to speed with so I recommend you read the links in the welcome message above. However, it was a good first attempt. Please ask if you have questions. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 03:50, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

This record is not a novel titled Dragon's Tribute, but a collection titled Maiden Flights, which includes Dragon's Tribute and a novella "Virgin Blood". I've corrected the record. You should do a primary verification of the record (see the link in the Help section) or give the source for your data in the note field. Mhhutchins 14:20, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Hambly's Dead and Buried

This record was accepted into the database, but several changes had to be made in order for it to comply with ISFDB standards. Those standards are in the help pages which are linked in the Welcome section above.

  1. The publication date was changed to 2010-05-01, based on the Amazon listing.
  2. The publisher's name was changed to "Severn House", the common name used for this publisher on the ISFDB.
  3. The page count was changed to "250" based on the OCLC record.
  4. The ISBN was changed to "978-0-7278-6867-1" based on the Amazon listing (all books starting in 2007 should have an ISBN-13, and the ISFDB record should give the number stated in the book.)
  5. A currency symbol was added to the price field, in this case "$".
  6. The link to a cover image on an unauthorized website was removed from the record. We are required to link only to websites which have given us permission to link to their files. I've replace the image to the file on Amazon's server.
  7. I have removed the title series name and number which you entered into the publication series and number field. You can learn the differences between a title series and a publication series here. I have moved this series data to the title record.
  8. We don't link to commercial sites in the note field of ISFDB records, so the link to the Amazon listing has been removed.

And the most important thing: you did not give the source of your data in the record's Note field. If you are working from a book-in-hand, you should tell us that in the "Note to Moderator" field. Otherwise you need to provide the source for your data in the record's "Note" field. I have added sources to the record. I have also made the synopsis more objective.

Another thing to keep in mind: non-genre books (works that are not speculative fiction) are only allowed into the database under certain circumstances. This title is included based on Hambly's work within the spec-fic field. Before adding any future non-genre books, you should inquire on the Moderator Noticeboard. Thanks for contributing. Please take some time to look over the help pages which are linked in the Welcome section above. Mhhutchins 06:02, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

I've made similar changes in the other two records which you submitted. Please look each of them over to see how any future records should be submitted. I've also removed the price given in the submissions, as they appear to be US dollar conversion of the UK price. If there is no stated price, you have to give a reliable secondary source for the price. Thanks. Mhhutchins 06:12, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
